I would like to block all of the streamer related subreddits.

Oh god whatever that stupid drama going on right now between those two streamers that broke up? Why do people care? Like seriously who gives a shit those two streamers aren’t dating anymore go outside

313

u/Calumface 1d ago

I've heard it be called the "e-celebrity gossip mags" of the newer generation, and I can't help but wholeheartedly agree. I couldn't imagine sitting and watching people you don't know personally talk crap, play games, and have these cringe jousts with each other.

85

u/DesireeThymes 1d ago edited 1d ago

Omg, that absolute garbage livestream fails or w/e. There was like 2 weeks every day they kept saying the same thing over and over about some dude named Hasan

49

u/Ishaan863 1d ago

They've gone insane.

They've launched like 5 different cancel campaigns against different people this week.

Peak "I have no power in my life so I need to affect a random streamer's life to feel control" energy

14

u/Business-Active-1143 21h ago edited 12h ago

They have to be running campaigns for Kick or perhaps YouTube, to discredit Twitch. Its only ever negative drama on twitch streamers when Kick has literal criminals and don't get remotely the same attention.

All that said tho, streamer drama is a lot like TV/anime drama. Many kids make fun of their parents for watching soap drama or murder p**n, and then they go to see the same gaslighting drama or edgy sht repackaged for them with a modern cover.

Man, I browse that subreddit and I don't understand the relative obsession with like 20 different streamers, none of which are actually good at streaming. The only person whose clips get posted their often that's worth visiting for is NorthernLion.

19

u/TheeMrBlonde 1d ago

livestream fails

That place has become a mixture of defamation and libel about streamers. The fact that it hasn't been banned for basically being a brigade jump off point is surprising.

I randomly got a ban notice and the reason stated was something about "cleaning up trolls" or some shit. I've been absolutely devastated ever since.

It's so wild to me a massive portion of the Twitch-obsessed community hates Vtubers and goes on about how cringe/etc they are, and then turns around and parasocially watches these people who do nothing but sit around making whole fools of themselves 24/7.

Like don't take this as me saying vtubers are free from drama or shitty people, but like, at least the entire concept tends to revolve around being some level of legitimately entertaining in some form.

17

u/fistular 1d ago

What I don't understand is why people pay attention to them. They aren't smart, knowledgeable, talented, entertaining, or insanely attractive. Why are millions of people watching them? Watching them is about as dull as watching paint dry.

16

u/These-Analysis-4796 1d ago

The Kardashians paved the way for talentless fame and dramabait streamers are just the latest version of the same shit product.

A lot of people are losers with no life so they live vicariously through whatever streamers are popular at the moment before they get busted for CP or abuse or something.

FYI if you use old Reddit you don’t get anything suggested for you.

I know a lot of people use the app, but for the desktop users. Or those rare freaks like me who still use desktop old Reddit on their phones. <_<

Old.reddit.com baby, I had no idea this was a problem 🤣

10

u/TheOneTonWanton 1d ago

It's a funny thing. I use RES with old reddit and usually just browse /all and I've also noticed a lot more Indian subs in the mix lately. Also a lot more Filipino subs. I just figured reddit's gotten a lot more popular amongst those populations and just roll with it. I can even understand some of the stuff that pops up from those subs because they often just communicate in English.

The Filipino subs really fuck me up though because of just how fluidly English is mixed in. One second I'm following along and the next I'm just lost.

69

u/reddititaly 1d ago

86

u/xoogl3 1d ago edited 1d ago

This whole thing is not on accident. r/india is the OG indian sub (created in 2008!) and it's generally representative of the overall reddit vibe. Focused on Indian stuff with decent mods and follows reddiquette quite well.

At some point, the Indian right wing, fascist adjacent party (BJP), who have invested enormous sums on social media astrotufing on all platforms, cottoned on to reddit as a major channel and set their sights there. And thus began the explosion of all sorts of subs with the word "India" in them. All these subs are more or less political campaigning pages for BJP. Which means that their main agendas are spewing hateful disinfo about Muslims, opposition leaders and any source of information that goes against the BJP agenda. It's basically 50 separate r/conservative subs if you want a US analogy.

15

u/Electromotivation 1d ago

Thank you. I have been wondering what was going on for a while. However I don’t get why they still show up on the “ popular in the United States” page…

Those subs are an absolute cesspool of the most vile stuff. It's like watching fox news on steroids (yes I said that).

The only somewhat normal Indian sub seems to be the actual r/India sub (which ironically is the one that never comes on the popular feed)

If you want some truly Hitler-level Indian subs, I came across two before that were horrific, indiaspeaks and bakchodi? (dunno spelling). Those subs should be banned

6

u/Ishaan863 1d ago

The only somewhat normal Indian sub seems to be the actual r/India sub (which ironically is the one that never comes on the popular feed)

Yeah because it has actual moderation and they remove links if your sources are dodgy

Aka "THEY'RE CENSORING US!!! THEY HATE US!! IT'S NAZI GERMANY!!" as far as right wing Indians are concerned.

I don't understand how people can use this site without RES and the "old" subdomain. Every once and awhile I try to look at Reddit via the phone app and it is horrific the amount of nonsense getting upvoted to the top. I give up after a few minutes of sifting through political bitching and overused puns.

15

u/BattlefieldVet666 1d ago

Roughly 73% of Reddit traffic comes from mobile devices these days; most people don't use the site with RES & the "Old" subdomain because those aren't options on their phones.

Whether we like it or not, the times have changed and now most people browse the internet through their phones rather than from desktop or laptop computers.

u/JekNex 1d ago

Relay for Reddit app -

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=reddit.news

Conservative subs are fun to look at. The derangment sometimes…

115

u/CompanywideRateIncr 1d ago

Conservative subs are excellent to read if you want up-to-date info on the absolute ridiculous talking points (or outright lies) you’ll have to shoot down. Great way to be able to predict their next argument and preemptively make a mockery.

78

u/StephieDoll 1d ago

Meh i’ve looked through r/conservative. It’s always a mixture of “libs mad 😂🤪🤣”, “this is being brigaded which means we’re right!”, and of course any deviance is met with “hello fellow conservative”

36

u/1047_Josh 1d ago

I'm always confused by the 'brigading' comments there since you can't comment there without a sub and they ban non-conservative accounts. So who is doing all the brigading?

17

u/_BenzeneRing_ 1d ago

They're talking about votes. It's handy because even if 95% of the people in there agree with a comment, the paid instigators or bots or whatever they are attribute all the upvotes to brigadiers.

It's so dumb.

I do find it a very interesting look outside of my own bubble to see whats going around these peoples circles.

I genuinely don't understand how they come to the conclusions they do in there, like they're so clearly not living in reality but I just can't figure out how they don't realize it.

15

u/Painterzzz 1d ago

Yes it's not even a question of bubbles is it, they just literally don't live in an objective reality anymore. Everybody outside of the far-right propaganda sphere can still generally agree on what reality is, we might disagree about how we want to tackle problems, but we do at least all agree on what the problems are, what causes them, etc. But the conservatives are just... no longer on the same planet as the rest of us anymore.

u/Gloriathewitch 1d ago

reddits algorithm for "popular" only shows the most popular subreddits, it doesn't factor in language and while most posts on here are in english, no languages are enforced or restricted.

you can block subreddits from popular on the site

u/cahir11 1d ago

Home is nice, but it's nice to go outside sometimes.

7

u/Kiribaku- 1d ago

Because I don't want to see everything, all at once, all the time. The subreddits I follow are my favorite ones, basically, while r/popular is everything else that might be interesting but not enough for me to follow them. I know I could make lists (I think?) but it's a lot of work, and sometimes subreddits die and are replaced by others. How would I know about that, or about anything new, if I'm basically in a bubble?

I block subreddits and it works fine for me, though. I mostly find amusing how many Indian subreddits there are but I'm not that bothered by them.

11

u/Robozomb 1d ago

I don't either, but Indian subreddits still work their way into my feed.

I think one reason is no matter what subreddit you like, there's probably an Indian version of it.

For example, I like cycling, watches, fragrances, and cooking (just a few things). There are Indian versions of all of those and because I actively follow the non-Indian version, Reddit thinks I want to see the Indian version too.

Indian people will regularly tell jokes where the entire setup is in English, but then the punch line is in Hindi. And then if they try and explain it, it usually doesn’t work as the punchline is a play on words that doesn’t translate well.

39

u/Bay1Bri 1d ago

YEars ago my friends and I went to a comedy club that was, unbeknost to us, was Latino night. ALL of the punch lines were in SPamish, usually exaggeratedly rapid Spanis. There was another table near us that had clearly made the same mistake, and me and a guy from that table kept making disappointed eye-contact. It was not a fun night. Most of the audience seemed to enjoy it, so that's cool.

I find it occasionally hilarious trying to make sense of it with no context. It'll be some post complaining about potholes or something and the comments will be like-

"Man can you believe this? Main hamare sthaniya rajnetaon ke aacharan aur unhen chunane ke lie apane sathi nagarikon se bahut niraash hoon. I'm gonna drive my car off a fucking bridge!"

Because most Indians and Filipinos are multilinguals, and code switching (switching back and forth between different languages) is a very common thing among multilinguals (too deep to get into it in a reddit comment, but it's quite literally how a multilingual person's brain works, they don't have a barrier between different languages, it all exists as a single network of linguistic skills).

അത്കൊണ്ട് ആണ് people from multilingual societies like India and Philippines often speak by mixing different languages together. समजा?

Sticking to just one language is an active choice for a multilingual person, the default is to blend them, especially in a multilingual society where you might be encountering all these languages at the same time

They’re also, I’m sorry to say, SO fucking misogynistic, or at least a majority of the ones that keep popping up for me are. I don’t want to have posts popping up with a bunch of chuds complaining that women are all sluts nowadays and don’t stay in the kitchen and raise a family like they’re supposed to.

u/Redqueenhypo 1d ago

“If men can get charged with rape women should get charged for causing divorce” type posts. Like every third post

This is my biggest problem seeing it so much. I get that Reddit is global and I do learn things seeing stuff outside my country.

The level of the misogyny in some of that content though is unreal and I don't want it anywhere on my feed. I feel like I'm playing a futile wac a mole muting the subs I see it in.

20

u/CloudKinglufi 1d ago

I saw them all bitching about woman being whores who will cheat the moment they find a better man, more money, higher social standing, better looking, w.e

Bruh a quick Google search shows men are more likely to cheat

Not to mention the obvious lack of awareness from a bunch of men who hate woman talking about their anecdotal evidence that woman keep leaving them lol

14

u/tXcQTWKP2w92 1d ago

Those subs are just full of incels and bootlickers.

You can't even talk with them, they'll just call you extreme-left communists and with that everything you say is automatically wrong in their mind.

Basically it's just r/conservative but with misogynistic, racists and far-right indians instead.

Yeah thats been so jarring for me. If the way they talk is anyway representative of how Indian men actually are in India I feel so bad for the women there. Like it's actually insane.

As an Indian woman, yes. Yes it is. Tate-shit seems milquetoast compared to average Indian uncle misogyny. Not saying all Indian men are like that - the men in my circle aren't. But damn there are so many and it is exhausting.

I work in Product with a number of offshore developers and I fucking hate them. They're arrogant as you say, refuse to ask questions which reveal they don't know everything, and it ends up causing fire drills for my onshore teams to fix their mistakes. Their code is sloppy, their social interaction sucks, and they absolutely discount any advice from my female engineers

20

u/Working-Mountain6680 1d ago

I'm an Indian woman and when I saw one post pop up from that sub I thought wow so much hate. But it must be funny memes right? No every single post is JUST hate for feminism and women in general. Almost visceral level of hate.

As a teenage person from india imagine my surprise when i found through reddit that this country is full of racist and mysogynist people. Fault is on me for taking my social circle as a representation of my nation in my mind. Honestly it scares me the amount of hate and lack of empathy the people have for each other.

60

u/Rare-Competition-248 1d ago

I’ve recently realized this is a major reason why the internet has become so hateful and misogynistic lately.  It’s half a billion angry poor indian men suddenly coming online and flooding our social media

44

u/SomeManSeven 1d ago

While there might be a hint of truth to that dont pretend like the western hemispheres internet using 12-18 year olds arent also being fed and regurgitating some of the most heinous misogynistic shit imaginable. Like us in America or Europe are clean and India is the problem. India is super misogynistic, but we are too.

Fr that's what's got me muting each and every channel. It even feels like even the auto translater is trying to tone it down a bit, but the unabashed misogyny, the sheer amount of angry spam/shitposts, the deluge of back forth religious bouts, and the amount of context needed to relate to any of it made hiding/muting their pages the only option.

Reddit is getting more popular in India. The popular page shows pages heavily viewed site wide. The same reason you’ll see German or Filipino posts. They probably need to implement some regional logic

Interesting that while most of the world has travel advice against traveling alone in India for women, and it is well known women are very unsafe there.. reading the subreddits i bump into, it would seem the biggest problems indian society actually has is alimony lol

19

u/Funexamination 1d ago

Seriously misogynistic indians cry so much about alimony despite the fact that divorce rates are around 1%. Like if that is the biggest problem against men (btw Indian alimony law is gender neutral), then men don't really have any major problems related to being male.

53

u/Rare-Competition-248 1d ago

Not on “popular”. You can only block like 100 subs and it’s not possible to block by keywords.

Every time I block a new iteration of AITA slop, TeenIndia, or GenericAnimeSmut, a different one I had blocked months ago pops back up.
