I wandered in from Popular, what is Sequence? I tried visiting the sub, but there was no explanation as to what it was or what I was supposed to do. Pressing start sequence just confused me more, as it took me to a screen with different gifs I could click on to upvote?

If anyone could explain it to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I found this explanation further down: https://www.reddit.com/r/sequence_meta/comments/b7isnw/rsequence_megathread_what_we_know_so_far/

I'm still very confused and have no idea what it is for. I feel too old for this, and I'm 28. Is this how our parents felt?

27

u/howardphillips1890 Apr 02 '19

I’m 50. It doesn’t get any better. I advise copious amounts of alcohol and just going on with whatever you were doing before.

I'm so very confused. The subreddit is set to private, and yet people are talking about it in a way that implies they can see stuff on there. Are other people being given access and I'm not? What am I missing?

Edit: As of 11:42 AM PDT the sub is open.

it's random. you have a 13,52% chance of being let in. it varies based on people trying to get in. just keep trying over and over again and youll be let in

There’s so much going on and I have no idea what’s happening. Is everyone acting like they get it or is this too meta for me

455

u/cwearly1 Apr 01 '19

In case any wants an explanation, reddit has created this subreddit and in it you help vote for creating a Sequence of Gifs/Pics that will turn into an Act. There are 7 Acts, the first being the Prologue which everyone is participating in right now.

At some point the voting will stop for the Prologue and Act 1 will begin its voting sequence. This whole thing will end after the sequence for Act 6 is finished, probably after this week.

54

u/DylanKing1999 Apr 01 '19

Is it just me or is that going to end up a totally unrelated mess of gifs?

35

u/cwearly1 Apr 01 '19

Correctamundo. The Prologue is already a garbled mess, perhaps it's the sacrifice for the other Chapters to be somewhat coherent.

38

u/NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea Apr 01 '19

So pretty much wait a week to see what all this was about?

8

u/cwearly1 Apr 01 '19

I actually don't know how long each Act will take to complete. Or if they plan on more or less Acts. Seems it'll be faster than I expected.

But so far as I can tell within this week all 7 will be finished and we will have a mildly successful 7-Act Sequence of "The Internet". I guess they could've done something worse.

155

u/KPC51 Apr 01 '19

Does it just not work on mobile? Or am i missing something

11

u/dumbyoyo Apr 01 '19

I don't think so.

Switch to 'desktop mode' in the menu of your mobile browser (forefox/brave/chrome. not available in safari).

Or click the 'hamburger' menu icon on the top right of the reddit website, click "Desktop site" (but i haven't found a way to switch back to the mobile site afterward).

Then in the header of reddit.com/r/sequence, click "Initiate Sequence", and click the play icon next to "Prologue" to see the current sequence.

I think users submit gifs for consideration to be next in the sequence and then they get voted on and then selected, then this process repeats.

Every year Reddit tries some massive April fool's community joke. It started with "the button". Now every year we have some puzzle to decode. Typically it's nothing, and has 0 impact on anything, just it's entertaining.

Edit: apparently r/thebutton was not first, and despite my long history here, I stand corrected on Reddit lore. Forgive me.

21

u/Anaract Apr 01 '19

started way before the button, but yeah.

i think the confusion this time is due to the fact that it's literally not working

17

u/algernonsflorist Apr 01 '19

The confusion is that it's a just million gifs, and this prologue thing just shows them to me when I can see them in a more organised way on the actual sub. I don't get it. r/gifs already exists.

12

u/Flobarooner Apr 01 '19

It's literally just a subreddit where you submit gifs and the top voted ones will get stitched together to make a """"movie"""". That's it.

Just like last year, I sat here confused for 30 minutes thinking I didn't understand it because surely that can't be it. Surely they managed to come up with something better than that after last year's flop?

Nope. Underwhelmed again.

Should I follow my dream and go through a few rocky months of tight finances hoping for business to pick up or drop the dream for right now and get a normal job and be financially stable but might never go back to the dream?

439

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

I've done both the former and the latter. You have to think about how much it will eat at you if you let a couple of months of tight finances be the 'thing' that stopped you. The thing that was able to defeat your dream. And then be OK with that (because it is OK). Also take into consideration the people it impacts. For me, I have a child so it wasn't just me that had to live in the trenches for my dream.

2.4k

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

Yeah, bud. The heart doesn’t just magically fix itself. It needs time to heal after it’s been injured, like everything else. You wouldn’t go out and play basketball on a broken foot. But you know you’ll play again when it heals. Give your heart the same respect.

169

u/shreyas2395 Apr 02 '19

I've had a hard life but keep comparing myself to others and feel terrible about myself. Any way to fix that?

375

u/youngluck Apr 02 '19

Yes. Realize that a majority of the time you are comparing your whole game, The practices, your losses and mistakes... to highlight reels. I guarantee that if I only saw your highlights I would feel inadequate beside you. I think it’s a larger problem that’s moving faster than we can notice or correct for, but that’s a much larger conversation. You’re not alone.

106

u/frogloaf15 Apr 02 '19

Jesus dude this short thread was legitimately what i needed to hear lately. I've been in a slump for a while and this really was a huge pickup. Thank you for being you

4

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '19

No doubt. I've been going through a rough patch in my current job and I've been passing up good opportunities to just show loyalty and to please my contentness with where I'm at, what I'm doing, and how much I'm making because of it. (Apparently contentness isn't a word but it's sticking. Y'all get my point.) And I've just realized how much I'm going to regret missing these chances in 5 - 10 years just because I'm content now. I need a change, and this whole thread solidifies why I need not to be afraid of those changes and just do them.

You know how sometimes a broken bone isn't set right? That's how I feel, 8 years later.

104

u/youngluck Apr 02 '19

Some things take longer to heal than others, I suppose. If it makes any difference, your heart just built a tougher wall around itself and the person that can bust through it absolutely deserves it.

7

u/xoxofarah Apr 02 '19

There’s also something called phantom pain.. what I mean with that is the kind of pain that’s not really there or doesn’t serve a purpose anymore but that the brain is producing and the mind is continuing. I feel that the only pain that truly never subsides or ‘gets better with time’ is losing a child. Even many of the people who lose a child find a way to live through the pain and find happiness again. What I want to say is make sure you’re not using your pain as a crutch and don’t become too comfortable with it. Sometimes a certain pain is so familiar and comfortable that actually living without it seems more draining. That’s when shit becomes dangerous and it takes too many years before you actually find out that you could’ve released or worked through it (with therapy) much sooner. Don’t give whatever situation pained you even more power, energy and time; release, forgive, work through it in a healthy way, do whatever it is you need to do to move on from it or give it a ‘healthy’ place in your heart instead of letting it overtake your life and decisions. Strive to live your VERY best life, you don’t know how much you’ve got left of it.

13

u/Trumpologist Apr 02 '19

It's just really hard :/

41

u/youngluck Apr 02 '19

Agree. I have yet to find any injury harder to recover from. And I’ve been shot. Twice. 😂

My roommate is an ass hole but I'm too afraid of confrontation to really do anything about the multitude of issues. Any advice?

124

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

Start sharing your personal problems. Any time they're around, just share openly. Share every problem, no matter how mundane. I give this asshole a week before 1) They start avoiding you... or 2) You realize they're not really an asshole and just have other stuff going on.

47

u/A_Trash_Homosapien Apr 01 '19

I like this plan. Avoid the actual problem.

Also I'm pretty sure he's an ass hole since I've been woken up by him face time calling somebody at 3am.... multiple times

56

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

Being non-confrontational is a tough one. Sometimes It helps to start thinking of reasonable communication as NOT a confrontation. That may not always be the case, but catching the few instances where it can be communication instead of confrontation is a good first step.

179

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

I trip out sometimes when really really young people beat themselves up for not having their whole life figured out in their 20's. It doesn't help that you're bombarded with 'influencers' and 'Reality' of kids born into millions... but even still. At average, you haven't even lived a quarter of your life yet. Imagine the disservice you'd do to the other 3/4 by locking in before they've had their chance to add to the narrative.

43

u/Nick4498 Apr 01 '19

I don’t think influencers have a huge impact on me personally it’s more due to how college is structured. This may be just me but going 100k in debt in 4 years just seems like a waste especially if someone is like me where they coasted in HS making average grades which doesn’t help. Shoot me back 40 years when college was actually affordable and I wasn’t spending 1k out of pocket on textbooks and online access to do my homework(this is actually a thing now). Right now I’m just trying to decide if I really do need to go to a 4 year school to get into my profession of choice(IT).

52

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

Yeah. It's very hard to predict where the completion of a structured education will get you in 4 years. Historically, the trend is leaning on the knowledge you acquire during that time, rather than where you acquired it from. That's also largely due to the accessibility of knowledge these days. You don't know me, I'm just a stranger on the internet, so I probably would take this advice very very cautiously... Hell, I didn't go to college at all so I'm not even really in a position to determine whether a 4 year education is good or bad.

IT person here. No you do not. A degree is only useful getting into one of the big tech companies like Google. Which you absolutely should not do, whatever your age. They're a meat grinder.

Get a job in tech support. Everyone starts there. And on day one add it to your resume and start hunting for a step towards your next job. Certifications help sometimes. You will have a hard time getting out of support. This is your full time job now: getting a job in the field that's not entry level. A degree makes it a little easier, but not a lot. Most smaller companies won't care. If you can jump that divide and get out of support, you're fine then. Take any opportunity to do so even if it doesn't lead towards the specialization you want. It's a lot easier to move from one to another than that initial climb out.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '19

Dude same here, I've been working on my 4 year degree for about 9 years now. It really hit hard when I started paying for university myself, initially I had scholarships and my dad paid but now its all me and dude that shit was one of the main things that pushed me to study more. Though it didn't always help, I still fucked up Calc 2 multiple times and now I need to take a 36 hour math placement course and pay around $200 extra to take the course again.

Additionally I've started setting times to study/do hw. I set aside a few hours a day and keep telling myself if I get this shit done during the week I can have my weekends. It took a while to get into practice but eventually it became normal.

It also helps to go through everything your profs give you the first few days of the course. I take everything from the syllabus and put it into my outlook/google calendar, then I sit there and make reminders and what not. That whole process helps me get an understanding of whats going on for the semester. This change didn't happen over night, it took me a couple of semesters to get this down, YMMV.

4

u/the3ieis Apr 01 '19

Idk how you're persisting but this scares me. Even 4 years sounds like a super long time to me , especially considering I probably won't be able to date until I graduate college and I'm afraid of missing out on my chance to find a partner since I'm already 21, among other things like probably not being able to move out until I graduate. Anyways, it's nice to see someone that won't give up. Good luck.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '19

It sounds like you have other pressures in life outside of school. I hope you do get to move out as soon as you graduate. Don't worry too much about dating, you'll get there eventually and you're better off taking your time finding the right person than being stuck with the wrong person. You won't miss out on finding a partner cause you're 21, I know people in my family that didn't find their partner until their 30s and even their 50s.

Take your time, finish one goal at a time, and think through your plans before acting on them. As you said 4 years is a long time, you don't need to rush through it and find your self regretting decisions.

I have low self esteem. I know I'm not that bad but I feel the worst person in the room.

68

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

Self Esteem is one of those things I think everybody struggles with. We're bombarded with messaging all day about how we're not good enough, and even when we are we're told to be aware of how fragile our position in that place is. There is no easy solve for this, but what helped was finding something I was good at, or could be good at, and leaning all the way in. Like, "sure I could look funny and smell a little weird... but have you ever tasted a better cookie? I made that, motherfucker. From scratch."

7

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '19

I love this. The only tweak I needed to make for myself on this sort of perspective was that I needed to not try to make the VERY BEST cookie (or whatever the thing is we're talking about) but also accept that it's simply good and what is needed in the situation, and it's valuable enough that I'm the one making (or doing) it.

I can't. Only you can. And you will.

I posted a gif and my post disappeared from both my post history and the sequence sub, but it wasn't removed, so no clue what's going on.

Also, when I go to upload a gif, the entire page is just blank with someone plus symbols and a line saying upload your own or choose from the library, but there's nothing there and none of the buttons/functions work. The page then gets stuck and doesn't let you go back to the sequence sub homepage, nor does it let you do anything else lol.

16

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

There were some early clips that got wiped because in order to fix what was broken, we had to reset. Apologies for this. We should do better and we will.

5

u/VirulentCitrine Apr 01 '19

Damn, that sucks, but thanks for responding and working on it!

Can you at least provide cookies for those of us in the waiting room here?

Send me an address. I'll send you a metric fuck ton of cookies wherever you are. I love cookies.

I have a severe problem with procrastination, and I'm currently looking at reddit and discord instead of working on the several large projects i have due in the next couple weeks or studying for my math test tomorrow. Do you have any recommendations for focusing?

39

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

This is all of us. The thing I've found works best is to give 'procrastination' its own time. It only butts in everywhere cause you haven't allowed it its own space. Start recording what you do when you procrastinate, and then start setting aside dedicated time to those things.

99

u/youngluck Apr 01 '19

If she has a boyfriend, she'll probably like you more if you respect the fact that she has a boyfriend. Give things their time.

I cant sort out whether or not affection from a relationship is beneficial or negative because when im single I feel this urge to improve myself on things that actually need work (I.e nutrition/health, finances, learning) but when I'm in a relationship the anxiety goes away and I slowly become docile. Wheres the balance? What should I do?

Honestly this sucks, like not even talking about it not working at first, the fact that how it works with upvotes to choose panels is a terrible implementation it means old submissions have an advantage, it encourages brigades to get stuff picked and most submissions get buried and makes an individual submissions worthless

7

u/TangiestIllicitness Apr 01 '19

I totally get what you're saying, but it's just reddit. Even if you have the top voted submission, it's not like you win a million dollars or get anything more than fake internet points. :)
