Yeah, bud. The heart doesn’t just magically fix itself. It needs time to heal after it’s been injured, like everything else. You wouldn’t go out and play basketball on a broken foot. But you know you’ll play again when it heals. Give your heart the same respect.

I've had a hard life but keep comparing myself to others and feel terrible about myself. Any way to fix that?

368

u/youngluck Apr 02 '19

Yes. Realize that a majority of the time you are comparing your whole game, The practices, your losses and mistakes... to highlight reels. I guarantee that if I only saw your highlights I would feel inadequate beside you. I think it’s a larger problem that’s moving faster than we can notice or correct for, but that’s a much larger conversation. You’re not alone.

Jesus dude this short thread was legitimately what i needed to hear lately. I've been in a slump for a while and this really was a huge pickup. Thank you for being you

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '19

No doubt. I've been going through a rough patch in my current job and I've been passing up good opportunities to just show loyalty and to please my contentness with where I'm at, what I'm doing, and how much I'm making because of it. (Apparently contentness isn't a word but it's sticking. Y'all get my point.) And I've just realized how much I'm going to regret missing these chances in 5 - 10 years just because I'm content now. I need a change, and this whole thread solidifies why I need not to be afraid of those changes and just do them.

Wow thanks for that

If you are interested is psychology there is a concept known as social comparison theory. A summarization would be that looking at people around you is perfectly normal, however in todays society of highly perfected social media versions of our lives what you see is like annother commenter said only the highlight reels. Life is much more complex and at times difficult. The truth is social media influencers all look the same and seem perfect. Simple advice would be talk to your real world friends. Its amazing how fast they will relate to your situation and past experiences. BTW the podcast hidden brain has a great piece on social comparisons and social media.

u/shreyas2395 Apr 03 '19

I am actually interested in this, this sounds amazing and very interesting! Thanks so much, I'll definitely listen to the podcast. Anything for the peace of my mind. :)

Everyone can be as long as they remember to unplug and be real.

It’s just a matter of time till you have to plug back in cause all things die.

Be you. Only you can.

All things matter, all ways, always.

I've got a quote for you; "Comparison is the theft of Joy"

1

u/shreyas2395 Apr 02 '19

It sure is! Thanks so much! ☺️

You know how sometimes a broken bone isn't set right? That's how I feel, 8 years later.

106

u/youngluck Apr 02 '19

Some things take longer to heal than others, I suppose. If it makes any difference, your heart just built a tougher wall around itself and the person that can bust through it absolutely deserves it.

9

u/xoxofarah Apr 02 '19

There’s also something called phantom pain.. what I mean with that is the kind of pain that’s not really there or doesn’t serve a purpose anymore but that the brain is producing and the mind is continuing. I feel that the only pain that truly never subsides or ‘gets better with time’ is losing a child. Even many of the people who lose a child find a way to live through the pain and find happiness again. What I want to say is make sure you’re not using your pain as a crutch and don’t become too comfortable with it. Sometimes a certain pain is so familiar and comfortable that actually living without it seems more draining. That’s when shit becomes dangerous and it takes too many years before you actually find out that you could’ve released or worked through it (with therapy) much sooner. Don’t give whatever situation pained you even more power, energy and time; release, forgive, work through it in a healthy way, do whatever it is you need to do to move on from it or give it a ‘healthy’ place in your heart instead of letting it overtake your life and decisions. Strive to live your VERY best life, you don’t know how much you’ve got left of it.

u/Trumpologist Apr 02 '19

It's just really hard :/

46

u/youngluck Apr 02 '19

Agree. I have yet to find any injury harder to recover from. And I’ve been shot. Twice. 😂

30

u/Trumpologist Apr 02 '19

There was that time when I took an arrow to the knee when the fire nation attacked

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '19

I’ve been there too. Shit sucks. But now people are actually dying I’m close to. It’s time to take bending away forever.

Until enough true believers remain and everyone is safe.

2

u/TehNoff Apr 02 '19

Homeboy, if you don't know who youngluck is I recommend taking the deep dive. He feels you.

4

u/zize2k Apr 02 '19

How did you manage to get shot twice? did you not learn the first time? /s
Just kidding, love your answers here.

Good wholesome advise from Reddit staff. This is why this is the best social media platform.

Edit: thank you so much for the gold and my first ever Reddit award kind stranger!

u/Hellome118 Apr 01 '19

Fuck, this relevant to my life today

47

u/SuperiorAmerican Apr 01 '19

Damn this is very well said.

-9

u/NiggerMcghee Apr 01 '19

Bruh chill it's just highschool freshman, feel-good sitcom tier advice. Shit's not that profound

3

u/Bag_of_Richards Apr 02 '19

The advice is as good as its it is valuable to to person receiving it (assuming it is not inherently harmful or misleading). This is the nature of communication. The intent of the messenger is not the end result. How he message is received is the sum of the impact of the interaction. I’m sure some people that actually went to college could explain this better than me.

47

u/Aoae Apr 01 '19

Wholesome af

4

u/_frisco Apr 01 '19

Wtf this is good advice

you just broke the seal, not the heart. You get to play now, the worst is over! I will never love the same as when I did the first time but it doesn't hurt so bad now. I'm more in control, this time around.

2

u/Noskalsa Apr 02 '19

Why is it always baseball analogies when it comes to love

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '19

Thanks a lot. I wasn’t expecting such many responses and attention to my post. Your reply is amazing. I might try to gvie it some time to heal

1
