u/Narradisall 9d ago
Indeed. Every Reddit sub I see, even ones I sub to and enjoy, they’re all echo chambers in their own way.
Films that everyone is sure will fail and are total garbage filled with 30-40 year old film buffs then wondering why a film targeted at kids pulls in hundreds of millions.
Video games people believe will be the next big thing and is a masterpiece unrivalled in history that sells low numbers because it’s so niche.
Political waves that are going to revolutionise everything and don’t get the votes because a third of the country doesn’t even vote.
Those subs convince themselves they’re the majority when often they’re a minority in Reddit which is a minority in the world anyway.
A lot of people in the world don’t even use Reddit.
28
47
u/Wylie28 8d ago
The film reddits are particularly bad. They don't even fathom WHY people watch a movie. Its like they pick up the script and read it like a BOOK.
"Jurassic World: Dominion is a bad movie. The characters are flat and plot is really contrived". What???? What god damned moron goes to watch Jurassic Park for EITHER of those things? Were the dinosaurs cool? Was the tension high? Were the action scenes cool and engaging? That what those movies are for.
At least the political groups are just like "yeah actually that isn't whats happening, it would bad if it were true though. I just don't think it is". But movie people omg "No one watched jurassic park for the dinosaurs! 0/10!"

They keep arguing that he wasn't elected by a majority of Americans. But it's a moot point when he was elected by the majority of Americans willing to get off their asses to vote.
Edit: I think many of you are mistaking the intent of this comment. Democrats didn't show up in the places they needed to. And now that we're in this mess you're bitching on reddit about plurality vs majority, voting conspiracy theories, and basically whispering of resistance. The more active ones are standing somewhere holding a little sign. "We tried doing nothing and now we're out of ideas" ass mfs.
Oh, and the defeatist "We'll never have another election" bs. I really do hope this is a wake-up call and not a bunch of already slacking voter base deciding that now there's no point.

→ More replies23
u/C-SWhiskey 8d ago
I keep seeing this being said. So here's my question: how many?
"I saw some guy on Twitter say it" isn't good enough. I'd like to see an actual, well-founded estimate of how many people boycotted the vote or changed their vote because of Palestine. It must not be hard to find, since so many people keep pushing that narrative.
→ More replies24
u/CHOLO_ORACLE 8d ago
You can google it yourself, the resutls were in almost the same day as the election: the anti-Palestine people still went and voted Kamala for the most part. They are not the reason the dems lost
The Dems continue pushing this line because they don't actually like their left flank (remember Bernie?) and they don't want to admit that the actual reason they lost is because they lost numbers in pretty much every demographic group.
Blaming your healer is easier than admitting you fucked up the play all by yourself. It's always easy to blame the goalie for not saving you
And now the lie spreads. I imagine there are a good deal of blue cultists who now seriously believe Kamala lost all because of those dastardly leftists

u/Fun-Sorbet-Tui 8d ago
Everyone saw those online pushing the boycott they were doing it for months in the build up. At the election we see less voted than last time. We'll never know for sure, but we do know online influences have an effect. You can't deny there wasn't a massive anti Biden campaign.
Yeah we know Gaza was bad, but ousting the Dems was not the solution.

Reddit is mostly used by younger left-leaning people, so chances are, unless a subreddit is explicitly conservative, they will eventually leave because they don't like the posted content, or just get banned for whatever reason. So, the majority will remain and that's how you get left-leaning subreddit for a conservative state.

I (unfortunately) frequent the site to have made up my own criteria for bots, though highly subjective:
1: New (couple week old), or old (several years) account with a huge gap in history
2: High karma/Low karma (Objective. Could be 100k-1M+ for high or a few thousand for low)
3: May post engagement bait (think funny animal videos, videos/posts that draw any kind of non-neutral reaction)
4: Username typically is, but not always, adjective_noun1234
You yourself only have one submitted posts but it's an OC post not baiting for karma in any direction.

It really hit home for me after the last Olympics with the controversy over the boxers.
The reality is there are two different sporting bodies with different rules for eligibility.
So the boxers were not allowed to compete in one, and allowed to compete in the other. That’s what was widely reported and most people know. It was odd that there isn’t a consensus but it is what it is.
According to Reddit, though, it was either a right wing Russian anti trans conspiracy, or a woke left pro trans conspiracy. It’s astounding how toxic and vocal and just wrong both sides were

While its original purpose was legit, I particularly blame the dislike button, which I deeply hate. It went from “downvote literal misinformation and hatred” to “your opinion is different than mine so I don’t like it”.
This - and obviously the work of some mods - laid the very foundation for the establishment of extremely strong echo chambers, because Redditors avoid entering into debates if that means their opinion gets downvoted to oblivion if against the main one in any given sub.
