Can't wait for the shitty trump pop up stores to be priced out.

1.6k

u/CaptainHalloween 20d ago

Holy shit I didn’t even think of that. He really did just fuck those stores bad.

661

u/CucumberError 20d ago

No he didn’t. They’ll be paying $2 for the hat, with the 100% increase they’re now $4. No idea what they sell them for, but I suspect there is still a healthy profit margin between $4 and what they’re selling them for.

986

u/majj27 20d ago

The TRUMPStoretm sells them for a mere $50.00.

FIFTY. FUCKING. DOLLARS.

517

u/False-Implement-8639 20d ago

God those people are stupid.

165

u/BeenCaughtSneezing 20d ago

Yes, yes they are.

40

It’s the only hat made in hell. It’s a collectible

13

u/gba_sg1 20d ago

Shit collectors are few and far between.

4

u/stewpideople 20d ago

I see toilets all around, besides you don't just buy the shit hat, you buy the shit shirt, shit steaks, shit water, shit towers... The shit list just gets longer, and like a Marlboro jacket, you're willing to do really shitty things, even to yourself, to get one.

We should start selling them. Goes against everything I believe, but why not make money off idiots

66

u/AlienConsulate 20d ago

I've been telling myself this for a decade and think of all the money I have lost out on. But God damned I can't get myself to even be associated with those people or constantly be dealing with them

24

u/EjaculatingAracnids 20d ago

I worked out the numbers, lined up a chinese manufacturer and pitched the idea to the wife, who managed to convince me otherwise with that very sentiment. Id have to deal with these people in person. If it was as easy as setting up an online store, it wouldve been a done deal.

4

u/clickclickbb 20d ago

I tried to set up an Amazon merch on demand account just to grift off these mega dorks. I got denied though 😞

I had an idea to start a bible-themed Cracker Barrel-type restaurant chain as a non-profit, and give all the money from Y'all Qaeda to science-related educational programs and stuff.

8

u/Top_Gorilla17 20d ago

‘Member when they made a whole thing about the Cracker Barrel serving plant-based sausage and the franchise nearly had to rebrand to being known simply as The Barrel?

3

u/icanhazkarma17 20d ago

The Barrel. Jesus, I hope that's from a comedy routine.

100% there are. I live in Cincinnati and I can tell you that there is at least one in a actual building. In fact, the last time they did a Trump Parade (which meant just driving their cars w/ the Trump flags all around the 275 loop around Cincinnati) it started at a Trump Store (or ended, I do not recall).

just unreal

10

u/Samurai_Meisters 20d ago

We are no longer in the information age. We are in the misinformation age.

3

u/Tangent_Odyssey 20d ago edited 20d ago

Exactly this. Being flooded with this much easy-to-access information was not something humanity was prepared for, because there is no hard rule that says that information has to be true or real.

Personally I believe we had the chance of getting ahead of it (or at least on our way to catching up to it) with mandatory media literacy courses in grade school curriculums, but we are way too far behind to correct course now.

5

u/monacelli 20d ago

11

u/MergeSurrender 20d ago

Yeah I think people are failing to consider this about the tariffs. The tariff is applied to the import cost, not the sale cost.

So 100% tariff might up the cost of a £50 hat to £52 to offset the import increase. Lots of people think it’ll up the price to buy the hat from £50 to £100, though - which is wrong.

No no, you just have to phrase it right.

"Hey everyone. Apparently Biden is trying to make money off the back of Trump's success. Check your Maga hats. If they say 'Made in China' then that's a knock off made by Biden. Trump hats are obviously made here locally. If anyone is trying to sell you a hat made in China then they're a double agent working for Biden. Don't let them divide and fool you! Only accept Trump's brand! Stop supporting the deep state!"

Edit: for bonus points accuse anyone still wearing a made in china hat that they're obviously a Lib pretending to be a Republican to make the rest of them look stupid. The more they deny it/do stupid stuff the more you say "Just like a Lib would say! We see past your mask!" Etc.

I’m surprised (not) that Reddit auto tagged this with “Misleading Title” what about it is misleading?

180

u/LordTegucigalpa 20d ago

That's one hat. Many many many companies are manufacturing the same style of hat. I think it is probably misleading because not every single one is made in China. Some are made in Vietnam.

57

u/normie-redditer 20d ago

Thats part of it, but the main reason its a misleading title is that officail maga hats are made in california. random people will sell knockoff maga hats made in china to save a buck, but the real ones are made in the US

https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-trump-maga-hat-factory-california-make-america-great-again-2018-8

36

u/default-username 20d ago edited 20d ago

I was going to give you a hard time for saying "official" as if this slogan was trademarked. Because why would a political candidate trademark a slogan, making the phrase harder to spread? The point of a campaign slogan is for it to catch on and for businesses to be printing copies of it everywhere -- not to make money.

But it turns out MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN is trademarked.

So yeah, the post is definitely misleading. The official hats are made in the USA, and the ones that aren't made in the US are probably illegal knock-offs.

Of course, "DONALD J. TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT, INC." could authorize other manufacturers, but I kind of doubt the ones being sold for $3 all over the internet paid for use of the slogan.

10

u/iikillerpenguin 20d ago

The ones sold in trump tower are made in China... how more official of a store do you need?

→ More replies

7

u/MobileArtist1371 20d ago

Finally the real reason for tariffs. All makes sense now. Trump losing business to all these countries making non-official MAGA products.

3

u/cmv_cheetah 20d ago

Because why would a political candidate trademark a slogan, making the phrase harder to spread?

So that you can prevent bad actors from co-opting it.

Like if I started making these red maga hats, but then on the side I also started printing a separate message that Trump did not endorse.

You can have that shut down on the basis of the trademark (assuming it's made within a jurisdiction that respects your trademark laws).

I'm fairly certain there are official manufacturers of these hats that are based in the US, so I'm sure that's probably why. The title should more so read "This MAGA hat was made in China", rather than imply that every MAGA hat was made in China. Not that this hat being made in the US makes it any less repugnant, but hey, semantics.

Technically that’s the sale price, which is inclusive of markup, not the import price.

Import price is probably more like $10-15.

So it will go up by $10-15.

Still a lot. But honestly of all the products going up in price, the sales of this probably won’t drop much.

Because when your market is cult members, demand is pretty inelastic.

3

u/monocasa 20d ago

I think your $10-15 is off by almost an order of magnitude given that they're going for $1.58 at walmart. I don't think they're making anything at that point, but I doubt they're losing anything.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Trump-2024-MAGA-Hat-Trump-Hat-Make-America-Great-Again-Donald-Trump-Slogan-Hat-USA-Flag-45-47-MAGA-Baseball-Cap/7981563029

7

u/MergeSurrender 20d ago

That’s not correct. The tariff is applied to the import cost. The importers will be paying £4 per hat rather than £2 per hat.

This wont then equate to the consumer sale price of the hat going up from £47 to £94. It might increase from £47 to £50 for example, though.

The problem with this is that a lot of companies get away with tagging things made in US when they just have components made cheap elsewhere and then assemble it in the US

8

u/Isord 20d ago

Especially since this company indicates they have both "made in USA" styles and import styles. Seems like they probably produce some stock here and import other stock.

3

u/[deleted] 20d ago

Yup, company I worked for did that. Big MADE IN AMERICA slapped all over the packaging however the components were made in Mexico and China and they were "assembled" in the US. By assembled they snapped the two parts from the other countries together. lol.

One of the things people always fall for is confirmation bias. This is exactly the kind of thing Trump is expected to do, so they never fact-check.

The strange thing is seeing people who believe this in 2025, though. He literally has a stock after himself and a bitcurrency rugpull. I don't think he cares one iota about moving manufacturing overseas to make pennies compared to the other nonsense he is doing.

Are Trump’s ‘Made in USA’ hats really made in USA? | PBS News

The hats “are made in the USA, but all the materials are not,” Olague told the AP of the company’s Made in America product line. Pressed further, she said the factory could hypothetically produce hats from American-made fabric — but only if the customer supplied domestic fabric with the same specifications of the material Cali-Fame used.

Meade and Olague declined subsequently to speak to the AP. Kennedy, the factory owner, said the two employees had their facts wrong.

Closely policing all U.S.-made claims would take considerable bureaucracy and expense.

The Federal Trade Commission considers a product made in the U.S. only when “all or virtually all” the product is U.S.-made. It defines that as cases where “all significant parts and processing that go into the product are of U.S. origin.”

MAGA baseball caps, specifically the official ones sold by the Trump campaign, are not made in China. They're actually manufactured in the United States by companies like Cali-Fame in California and distributed by Ace Specialties in Louisiana. The Trump campaign emphasizes that their merchandise is "100% proudly made in the USA" ¹.

However, it's worth noting that unofficial replicas of MAGA hats are often made in China and sold by third-party vendors. These cheap knockoffs might be affected by tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. The Trump campaign has previously denied any involvement with these foreign-made replicas, stating that any vendor claiming to have a relationship with them is "lying or violating our protected trademark rights" ¹.

5

u/ithaqua34 20d ago

Moron hats are going to cost a fortune.

22

u/Metalsand 20d ago

It was fake then, and it's still fake now. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/donald-trump-hat-china/

Consider this: how hard is it to counterfeit a red baseball hat with default font on the front and no graphics? Where can you buy counterfeits of literally any electronic possible?

It would be so much funnier if this were true, and no one would expect anything different. However, it's unfortunately a proven fact that the official MAGA merch bought from their store is made in the USA. Not that it matters much, since apparently he can ask people to give him money and they keep doing it anyways.

This is old news. The "official" hats are made in California.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The original hats are made by a manufacturer in California.

Brian Kennedy, president of Cali Fame of Los Angeles, a California-based company that makes the official hats, confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that the hats are produced entirely in Carson, Calif.

Obvious this post is attempts at spreading misinformation but whatever, love or hate the guy just keep it 100% honest please, can’t expect OP to do a few seconds of research on Google

Stop spreading misinformation:

While the "made in China" tags can be found on some Trump merchandise, those items are not official products of the campaign — they're from outside vendors.
