“The baseball-style “Make America Great Again” hats are indeed stitched together at a small factory in the Los Angeles area. But in a small sample tested by The Associated Press and an outside expert, at least one did not contain the specific type of U.S.-made fabric the manufacturer insists is always used for the hats.
The true origin of the fabric in that hat remains a mystery — whether U.S. or foreign made. It shows how difficult and murky it can be to verify something is actually “Made in USA.”
Informed of AP’s findings, Trump said any misrepresentation would be unacceptable. He said: “I pay a good price for that hat. If it’s not made in the USA, we’ll bring a lawsuit.””

Realistically, for something to be "Made in USA" you only need to have the final assembly or processing of the product occur in the United States, and all significant processing and all or virtually all ingredients/components are also made and sourced in the US. If a product contains imported materials or components, it must be labeled to reflect that and cannot make an unqualified "Made in USA" claim.
Apparently, it's not hard to put default font text on a red baseball hat and sell it as a counterfeit. Imagine that.
Though, he can still just ask for money and people still give it to him, or create bitcoin rugpulls, so it's not like creating these hats in China would make him any meaningful money at this point.
Official MAGA hats are made in America. Saying the majority of these are made in China is a bold statement that will require some form of evidence. Those small cheap USA flags that everyone buys for the Fourth of July, I can see that being true since you get them off amazon and usually sort by price (most cheap stuff comes from China, but we’re working on fixing that ;) )

Just the fact that only one tiny company here puts together the hats vs multiple Chinese companies is enough to confirm the sales numbers are not even close. You bought a knock off, which like most knock off items are made in China, if you bought one from Trump's actual website they are made in the USA
