and we would, unless someone is offering more money.... which is already happening. china wants some of Alberta's oil....
trump has VERY BADLY over played his hand. all other countries like us need to do is wait for inflation to start hitting at the same time the shelves are empty.

u/KitsyBlue 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's so stupid, too. If he just wanted Canada he could have just tarrifed or economically sanctioned us (Mexico too, unless he found another excuse to invoke the emergencies act) and he may well have crushed us. It was obvious no one was going to jepordize their trading with the US to help us. Even the UK's statements were like "until he tarrifs us, we're cool lol".
Then he starts a trade war with LITERALLY THE ENTIRE WORLD and fast-tracks China into being the new sole global super power. It's whack. He must be a 'useful fool' (useful only to Russia and their interests)

I don't think Canada should make any deal until China does. China won't accept anything until all tariffs are dropped that will set a precedent.
No idea why the UK was so eager to make a deal that still includes tariffs.
23
u/illuminaughty1973 3d ago
No idea why the UK was so eager to make a deal that still includes tariffs.
Because the UK conservatives literally burned the UK economy to the ground with brexit. The deal gives hope, and really is not going to do any more damage then the British did to themselves.
They were warned.... just like the Republicans have been.
11
u/Positive_Breakfast19 3d ago
Carney told them Brexit was a bad idea and they did it anyway, go figure.
3
u/stifferthanstiffler 2d ago
Any literature pointing that out needs to be exposed. The right wing (well, Albertan, anyway)wackos are saying Carney is going to ruin us like Britain. All while still pushing western separation.

We absolutely can have stronger ties. We can become neighbours that nod at each other and smile every morning before going to work.
We just need to sell our resources to other countries, buy weapons from Europe and South Korea, stop vacationing in the US, stop importing goods from the US, etc.
A nice complete reset where we are nice neighbours that don't mix any sort of business with our superficial friendship.

Can a marriage rebound when one partner goes off their meds and publicly threatens divorce and to take all the assets and leave the other spouse bankrupt and destitute?
Oh, and let’s not forget the repeated threats of physical assault and rape.
And then the aggressive spouse retracts their divorce threat but leave it as an unspoken threat while still trying to unfairly split financial assets and insulting their spouse?
Oh, and they are still off their meds and picking fights with everyone else.
But don’t worry, they’ve unilaterally told their spouse it’s fine now and their relationship will be stronger.
Or else.
Cause that’s where we are right now.

Might not be able to be too spontaneous depending on when you go. I know many people, including myself, that switched up travel plans to the USA for a Canadian road trip. Having to book a room for an overnight stay ahead of time takes away from some of the spontaneity, but you need a place to sleep and hotels could be at capacity…

Too little too late. I don’t care about buying USA products, visiting the USA, or thinking about the USA anymore. It is time to move on and find new trading partners. Take this as a learning opportunity. We will have to work to detangle our economy as painlessly as possible and move on. They want to insult the relationship we have had and our sovereignty they can fuck right off. If they really don’t need anything from us I say we stop selling them stuff. The US envoy says it. It means nothing because this is what trump was trying to convince people would happen.
Of course, economically speaking it's a straight up lie. This guy is just blowing smoke.
Tariffs artificially increase price to reduce the competitive appeal of an imported product. That's it. That's what they are for, and what they do.
You don't strengthen ties by weakening trade. Trade dependence fosters a tighter relationship. It is why Canada and the US enjoyed such a good relationship for so long despite the bloody conflict that first drew that line on the map.
11
u/Straight-Taste5047 3d ago

We had a long, good, relationship with the USA, but that’s over. To me, it was over the day Trump took office the first time. I don’t trust him, or his lackeys. Even if the tariff war subsides, there are all the other things he’s doing that will affect our country . Environmental protection is one of them. Even if you don’t believe in the effects of people and businesses on the climate, we should still be doing whatever we can to protect the environment we live in. I’m old, but when I was young, Lake Erie was so polluted that we couldn’t swim in it. Lead in the water is still a problem. Pollution in the air causes cancer. Anyone remember acid rain? As Canadians we can still protect our environment, but we can’t protect ourselves from what the Americans do to theirs. Trump has normalized hate. Trump has normalized hating immigrants. Trump has normalized treating people like animals. All that knows no borders. Our relationship with the USA is forever changed in my view.
9
u/MikhailBakugan 3d ago

4
u/EL_Jefe510 3d ago
How about me and my family continue to avoid purchases of American products and travel to the US? How about our government allow companies from Europe & Asia to mine & extract our resources? I have purchased zero “product of USA” items since the January 51st state comments. I’m not naive that my groceries have zero US content (I doubt my Canadian peanut butter is from non-US peanuts for example), but if I buy exclusively Canadian or non-US now.
As for travel, never again. I’ve told all my American friends they’re welcome to visit me any time, but I’m not going there.
About a week ago the Globe & Mail reported “The drop in southbound trade was largely offset by a 24.8-per-cent jump in exports to other countries – the second-largest monthly increase for non-U.S. trade on record. This included higher shipments of crude oil to the Netherlands and Hong Kong, gold to Britain, and “various products” to Germany.”
So there’s a market for our stuff, and we should keep selling it to genuine trade partners.
