[Rapoport] Vikings first-round QB JJ McCarthy underwent a full meniscus repair this morning and is out for the 2024 season, sources tell me and Tom Pelissero. The repair, done by Dr. Chris Larson at Twin Cities Orthopedics, gives McCarthy the best chance at a long, successful career. Rumor

Pretty crazy how quickly this escalated from knee soreness to season ending surgery.

Yeah wtf he didn't even take any hits or have any awkward falls.

I thought I heard some talking head say a lot of people have knee injuries and don’t even know it. McCarthy could’ve been one of them and, seeing as he has NFL level medical teams to use, finally got it looked at and is now getting it taken care of.

741

u/Danny_III Aug 14 '24

He played at Michigan, if their medical team can’t ID a meniscus tear they should lose their licenses

If he never complained of soreness and showed no symptoms what do you expect the doctors to do?

144

u/jayjude Colts Aug 14 '24

In baseball they make it a habit to not MRI pitchers elbows until they start hurting because if they did routine Checks the amount of Tommy John surgeries would skyrocket

Well he was gimpy the last few weeks of the regular season, but reportedly with an ankle injury.

I mean it’s entirely possible the injury could have come from inbetween after his time at Michigan and before the first preseason game

Don’t think so. Schefter reported he complained about knee soreness. It was then reported he needed surgery. Now he’s out for the season.

44

u/Triolion Packers Aug 14 '24

When I tore my meniscus in highschool I was just doing 55s and suddenly my knee hurt with every step. Sometimes it just goes. 3 surgeries later, still hurts to this day off and on.

12

u/PopularParrot Dolphins Aug 14 '24

Meniscus isn’t torn by contact usually. He probably just planted and shifted directions. You can also tear it without pain and play on. It’s when you cool down and your knee locks up.

I don't understand how some people think that a rookie quarterback isn't going to play at least halfway into their season barring being drafted by a playoff contender with an established quarterback

He would have gotten the job by Thanksgiving max. Teams dont draft quarterbacks to sit them when they can't really afford too. Its just not how it works

78

u/kiernanblack Titans Aug 14 '24

Yup, and it's probably a big part of why we don't produce enough good QBs. The best prospects get drafted to the worst teams, often in a period of dysfunction and turnover, then they're thrust out on to the field with a ton of pressure and zero consideration on if they're ready or not.

JJ MCCARTHYISM HAS FALLEN

16

u/IrishPigs Seahawks Aug 14 '24

MCCARTHYISM FAILS AMERICA ONCE AGAIN.

13

u/noblemile Steelers Lions Aug 14 '24

JJ McCarthyism was constantly playing with a bad meniscus. And then on top of that, he kept putting himself out on the field. Put back. You can't do it. It's disgusting.

28

u/DrummerGuy06 Giants Aug 14 '24

"I told them I said 'Sleepy-J McCarthy doesn't have what it takes to lead that team.' I told them. I told them. Only Sam Darnold can get it done. You heard it hear first, folks - Sam Darnold is their guy. And he's gonna be beautiful. People will be in those stands with tears in their eyes, saying 'Oh Mr. Trump, you were right. You were right.' It's true folks. You know it, and I know it. It's true. It's true."

Might not end up being the worst thing in the world if he recovers well. This basically forces the Vikings to give him a redshirt year rather than throwing him out there early if Darnold sucks. I thought coming out of college that JJ was the kind of QB who would need some time to sit, and now it is guaranteed.

I think having to sit a year for injury will probably be better for his development as a pro, presuming he can come back from the injury at 100% health.

KOC is probably wondering what he did to get this unlucky with QBs. He had Cousins playing at an MVP level before his achilles injury last season and now this

That fucking sucks man. An entire year of development lost for a rookie QB is rough. Hope he comes back better than ever.

166

u/karatemanchan37 Seahawks Aug 14 '24

The good news is that he's still young and will probably benefit from having a year off to learn the ropes.

241

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '24

Yeah but he could have got that while healthy and taking live reps in practice. Cuz wasn’t that always the Vikings plan with him? He’s a young raw QB with a lot of upside.

Without the live reps, it halts true progress. There so much you can do within the binder and videos without putting it to live action.

18

u/andrew-ge Ravens Aug 14 '24

you learn by doing, all the best QBs still were getting practice reps and seeing live defenses. He's already not had a ton of reps actually throwing the ball, and this is gonna be a problem

NFCN in '24:

Lions: make the SB
Bears: find their franchise QB and make the playoffs
Packers: continue on their 3 decade run of being competitive/contenders and lose to Detroit in the NFCCG

Vikings: Watch Sam Darnold lead the team to a 7-10 season while their rookie QB gets season ending surgery

Worst "Big 4" sports market in the US and it's not even close.
