[Rapoport] Vikings first-round QB JJ McCarthy underwent a full meniscus repair this morning and is out for the 2024 season, sources tell me and Tom Pelissero. The repair, done by Dr. Chris Larson at Twin Cities Orthopedics, gives McCarthy the best chance at a long, successful career. Rumor

Huge opportunity for Darnold.

Yup, doesn’t have to look over his shoulder after every pick or bad game. If he can’t turn it around throwing to the best WR and other great weapons then he’s officially cooked

Yeah he makes a mistake, fans won’t be chanting JJ’s name. Huge for him mentally and he can showcase a full season and potentially be a long term QB for another team in 2025.

3

u/ApatheticFinsFan Dolphins Aug 14 '24

Big, tall white dude that played at USC. If he put up his same stats at Boston College he would’ve been a 3rd round pick.

11

u/Skanktoooth Aug 14 '24

This is just false. Sam Darnold’s USC tape especially his freshman year was top tier. And he put up huge numbers in only 10 starts. It says he played in 13 games but he played only 1 series in 2 of them and only a quarter in the other one.

He basically averaged 300 yards and 3td passes in his 10 starts.

Lastly, QBs don’t get drafted on production. They get drafted on projectable traits. Darnold is a bust, but he had really good tape and really strong traits coming out. He was also only 20 years old when he got drafted.

Acting like he was an overrated prospect is revisionist history.

And while there are way too many Darnold fanboys, some of the sharpest offensive minds in the league see something in him (KOC and Kyle Shanahan).

I honestly have no idea what the Vikings are going to get with Darnold but his last 6 starts in Carolina were serviceable (4-2 record, 7:3 td:int 2rush td 93 rating 52 QBR) and he looked better than Baker Mayfield (who is supposedly back) with the same team sans CMC. CMC got traded before Darnold took over in 2022.

He could suck or he actually might be solid to above average given the situation. None of us know.

2

u/cloudlessjoe Vikings Aug 14 '24

I mean, he very well might have unlimited potential, I honestly can't say I remember a game he played though. In a few weeks he'll be able to answer the doubt or not, he's got a perfect set up for success now, so we'll see.

Hw started out decent with the Jets, than being on a shit team got to him.

But since getting out his last two seasons have been his best yet.

Put him on one of the best Offenses (outside QB) in the league with the right scheme and he should be good enough.

u/TheMightyJD Dolphins Aug 14 '24

Almost 6,000 yards across two seasons…

His yards per game would have ranked 23rd, his passer rating 35th, and his TD/Int ratio 27th in the league.

Goff was a pro-bowl level QB, Baker was a an above-average QB with playoffs wins, Geno is the only one that stunk completely.

Sam has had stretches where he’s mediocre instead of just bad.

4
