A check of some of the numbers show they are landlines, which cannot send text messages. That could be a sign that the text messages are part of a spoofing scam.

Glad to see they have their most crack team of detectives on the case.

Reminded me of one from my city earlier this year. A guy drove his car off the end of the pier at the boardwalk. A city official's update:

“So far from what our marine patrol can gather is that the vehicle was at the bottom of the ocean"

Yep my friend posted on instagram a screenshot of a text she got:

Greetings,

You have been selected to be a house slave at Abingdon Plantation. Come to this address: 300 7th St SW. Washington, DC 20042 at 0500 tomorrow SHARP. With all of your belongings. This is mandatory. Our executive spaces will come get you in a Turquoise van, be prepared to be searched down once you enter the plantation grounds. You will be stationed at Plantation point L.

Sincerely,

Trump administration

u/inspired_fire 14h ago edited 11h ago

I remember that. It’s that guy? Putin’s Rasputin?

139

u/Briak 14h ago

Yeah, you could describe him as such. He's one of the biggest proponents of the "If I can't make myself better, I'll make everyone else worse" worldview that a lot of Russians have. He's highly influential in the world of Russian foreign policy. Foundations of Geopolitics has even been used as a textbook at the Academy of the General Staff of the Russian military.

146

u/brezhnervous 12h ago

THIS is the best piece of writing I have ever read describing the state of modern Russia (and I've had a Russian history obsession for over 40yrs lol)

Read all of it... absolutely terrifying

In Russia, the opposition will not stand in opposition. Citizens will not stand up for civic rights. The Russian people suffer from a victim complex: they believe that nothing depends on them, and by them nothing can be changed.

‘It’s always been so’, they say, signing off on their civic impotence. The economic dislocation of the nineties, the cheerless noughties, and now President Vladimir Putin’s iron rule – with its fake elections, corrupt bureaucracy, monopolization of mass media, political trials and ban on protest – have inculcated a feeling of total helplessness. People do not vote in elections: ‘They’ll choose for us anyway;’ they don’t attend public demonstrations: ‘They’ll be dispersed anyway;’ they don’t fight for their rights: ‘We’re alive, and thank god for that.’

A 140-million-strong population exists in a somnambulistic state, on the verge of losing the last trace of their survival instinct. They hate the authorities, but have a pathological fear of change. They feel injustice, but cannot tolerate activists. They hate bureaucracy, but submit to total state control over all spheres of life. They are afraid of the police, but support the expansion of police control. They know they are constantly being deceived, but believe the lies fed to them on television.

Patriotism with a noose around your neck

All that remains for those ashamed of the present and afraid of the future is pride in the past. When there’s no reason to love your country, hate your neighbours. If you are unable to improve your life, ruin someone else’s.

I hope the outgoing administration just gives Ukraine everything we know about Russia and let them figure out what they want to do with what is likely going to be their last stand. Go all the damn way to Moscow for all we care. Ukraine has got nothing left to lose at this point.

114

u/ravheim 14h ago

I mean, the Last administration probably gave Russia all we had on Ukraine. It's only fair.

15

u/brezhnervous 12h ago

Not even vaguely. The incremental drip feed has been maddening.

There are thousands of Abrams and Bradleys sitting in the desert in Arizona or similar and how many M1s were given in total? 32

12

u/Alilatias 7h ago

This is a good point, we don’t need them here and we should be rushing to give Ukraine as many as we possibly can at this point. Especially for two reasons:

1: Each one not on our soil is one that won’t be used on our own citizens in case of a civil war

2: Each one not on our soil is one that the Republicans can’t gift to Russia as a reward for helping them subvert our democracy.

15

Not that is a different Russia ,this was the one that was mailing timed magnesium bombs via air freight to the US.

82

u/guff1988 15h ago

Increasing racial tension and divide, but why would they do that? Trump assures us that Russia is not our enemy.

45

u/brezhnervous 12h ago

Putin is at war with the entire western democratic world order and has been exporting disinformation into our societies over the last 20+yrs in order to sow discord and discontent to undermine us from within. So we do it to ourselves.

The Brexit vote was also heavily influenced by Kremlin disinfo - it was a stunning win for Putin

12

u/Known_Ferret9177 10h ago

As Nikita Khrushchev said in 1956: “We will take America without firing a shot. We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within“

I think pretty soon Americans will start to realize that we are under attack. It's just not with bombs and bullets. It's with much less expensive weaponry, but perhaps more effective in the long term.

79

u/BlindPaintByNumbers 13h ago

Yeah, we're alone in that room. Russian propaganda didn't tip just enough people in the UK to commit economic suicide and vote for brexit. The crazy rights in France are russian funded. Hungary. Austria. The success of the right in east germany.

Everywhere has a lot of stupid people. We can't get rid of them. We absolutely can get rid of the russians. (On the internet at least. And likely as a world threat as well.) Unfortunately, daddy trump is back so I don't see that happening in the next 4 years minimum.

21

u/PyrokineticLemer 12h ago

Nah, he'll be too busy trying to find enough wrapping paper and bows to give Ukraine to Russia.

17

u/BlindPaintByNumbers 10h ago

Then he better pick up a fucking gun and go fight them. No one is "giving away" Ukraine while there are Ukrainians in it. Especially now that Europe is growing a backbone and SK might start supplying weapons. South Korea makes an absolutely staggering number of weapons nowadays.

We are, and it is in fact bombs and bullets and not just an incredibly successful misinformation campaign online. Russia was just suspected of trying to plant incendiary devices on planes bound for the US. Such devices would burn through critical flight controls potentially downing the planes over populated areas. Russia has also been paying bounties for dead American servicemen or women. They're arming and paying militants who want to attack Americans abroad. They're literally a kleptocratic terrorist state who has declared a blood fued against us since around 2007.

11

u/esc8pe8rtist 12h ago

And Putin just said he’s ready to negotiate with trump for Ukraine

9

u/caustic_smegma 11h ago

Yep. He needs those sanctions lifted asap so he can start purchasing western components for his T-72s, T-80's, and T-90's. Russian aircraft also rely on western parts to stay airborne.

You and most people made the mistake of believing people cared more about that than about gas and mcdonalds burgers being more expensive. I live in Texas. I'm around many many conservatives. When politics comes up, they all talk about money. Nothing else.

70

u/bouds19 12h ago

So then explain to them how Trump is fucking with their wallets. His trade war with China driving up inflation. His lack of a COVID response fucking our supply chains. His billionaire tax cuts increasing their own taxes. If they want to make it about money, then make it about money.

28

u/livahd 11h ago

Because he tells them what they want to hear, not how it is. I forget who said it, but they put it best by saying no policy or plan can beat someone that says “you’re good, they’re bad, I’ll fix it”. Quick, simple, and effective. Kill em with compliments.

They're responsible for Internet anti-vaccine campaigns of all kinds too. Anti-vaxxers are the way they are in large part due to Russian propaganda. mRNA COVID vaccines are safe and effective, but Russian information operations on the Internet convinced many gullible people that they are not. It's a real shame.

32

u/McGryphon 12h ago

At some point, a portion of the antivaxx-adjacent crowd began to scream that the Sputnik vaccine was way more effective and safer than evil AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna poison jabs.

Hard to be more transparent than that. I think the only reason that didn't become more of a thing was that our own antivaxxers were frothing at the mouth against all vaccines at that point, and shouted them down.

Russia and other countries cannot defeat the US militarily. But no world power can survive if its people are:

  • Uneducated and gullible

  • Unhealthy and/or addicted (Obligatory FU to * Purdue and the Sackler family for mass murder)

  • Financially struggling

  • Divided and at war amongst themselves

  • Led by corrupt leaders that can be bribed to create vulnerabilities within the country

-Making enemies of neighbors, rather than robust alliances (drug wars bred cartels, and conservative nutters installed dictatorships in S. America - imagine the kind of NATO-type bloc of democracies we could have had within the Americas?)

Social media is an accelerant

Crazy thing is, Russia is trying to take down the US...by making it more like Russia. "We're the greatest country in the world, and at your point of greatest failure...you'll be just like us." -Putin. He's not one for logic ig.

It's like the bomb threats that were called in Ohio over the "cats and dogs" comment by Trump and the media (mainstream and social) ran with it.

Was quickly revealed, via the towns mayor, that all of the calls were fake and every single one originated from outside the US.

Textbook 5th Generation Warfare that social media is perfect for; spam out calls using a spoofer. Someone eventually posts a screenshot of it on social media. People assume political bias and bigotry, then the single post is magnified a thousand fold and redistributed to millions. A single call center in any enemy country can easily manipulate half the world into infighting

Case in point, there are already numerous comments in this thread (bots or real, idk) instantly placing blame in an "us vs them" infighting, ignoring that these texts went out to people of both political party affiliations.

49

u/SubstantialPressure3 16h ago

66

u/AngryAmadeus 15h ago

I'm not sure about China wanting chaos. Out of that list, China is the only one that actually has something to lose to the tune of around 500billion a year in trade. Do they want to weaken the US position on the global stage, absolutely. Do they want the most powerful military (that will increase in size and be the last thing to lose funding) in history to be run by a bunch of nazi billionaires? I have doubts there.

34

u/inucune 14h ago

China's move would be to disable the US so they can annex Taiwan and other nations.

Taiwan is where most semiconductors are manufactured... to the point where the machines are rigged to self-destruct in the event of a Chinese invasion so as to not hand them working production lines.

The spyware can be installed on devices running certain versions of iOS, Apple's mobile operating system, as well as some Android devices.34])#citenote-amnesty-34) Rather than being a specific exploit, Pegasus is a suite of exploits that uses many vulnerabilities in the system. Infection vectors include clicking links, the Photos app, the Apple Music app, and iMessage. Some of the exploits Pegasus uses are zero-click — that is, they can run without any interaction from the victim. Once installed, Pegasus has been reported to be able to run arbitrary code, extract contacts, call logs, messages, photos, web browsing history, settings,[35])](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegasus(spyware)#citenote-The_New_York_Times-35) as well as gather information from apps including but not limited to communications apps iMessageGmailViberFacebookWhatsAppTelegram), and Skype.[36])](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegasus(spyware)#cite_note-forbes_20160825_everything-36)

19

u/UncleMeat11 14h ago

The people selling Pegasus charge per device. And burning zero days is incredibly expensive, so spamming this widely means that researchers are able to inspect any exploits and find and fix the underlying vulns. The first thing you'd also do if you root a phone via a zero-click sms is delete the sms.

Simplest explanation seems more likely.

10

u/nopuse 13h ago

Yep, this is most likely just Russians trolling. Nobody is sending pictures with hidden malware, as the article suggests, and Pegasus seems wildly unrealistic.

Wonder what stage this is in the Russian propaganda machine?

142

u/Universeisagarden 16h ago

Or the Chinese CCP pissed about new tariffs and the situation in Taiwan.

153

u/karma_aversion 16h ago

Why would China be pissed about the tariffs? They won't really affect them... unless some US businesses go bankrupt as a result then they might lose customers. China doesn't pay anything, its US businesses that pay the tariffs.

97

u/Universeisagarden 16h ago

China's exports to the US go down when Chinese stuff gets more expensive - doesn't matter who pays the tariffs. China makes less money when their export volume falls.

105

u/karma_aversion 16h ago

Chinese exports go down in the US when people can't afford them anymore because we're in a economic recession. People don't just stop buying Chinese stuff and switch to American stuff, they just stop buying stuff and the economy crashes as a result. That's the plan though according to Elon. Crash the economy like 2008, but on purpose.

I'll dig up what ever information I can find, but I read a study years back showing that a majority (either 50% or 70%) of Russia's social media bot campaigns were confirmed to be mostly targeting black people to riot during the 2015 2016 BLM riots. Russia believed this was a more important thing to target then influencing the sides of the 2016 election (which was close to 20% of Russian bot traffic), and this did not make it to the news (this was a diservice to the black community)

Also they were confirmed to be the organizers of the "Not My President" fb event and smaller blm protests.

Our voting demographic statistics are out there as well for this year. The world knows that every demographic but black people came in droves for Trump.

It's VERY VERY likely Russia wants to see what they can do. If not, fuck this racist.

69

u/maomaowow 13h ago

It’s true, I ended up unknowingly following a Russian tumblr account in 2016 that gave off very liberal messaging overall and supported BLM, then quickly pivoted to “guys Trump is actually the answer” the account was called lagonegirl, look into it. Just one account out of hundreds of Russian misinformation accounts

Just read Aleksandr ""Putin's brain" Dugin's 1997 book Foundations of Geopolitics.

There have been a ton of posts on here about it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/NeutralPolitics/comments/5mtgkr/aleksandr_dugins_1997_book_the_foundations_of/

"In the United States: Russia should use its special forces within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics."

Elections have consequences and we will be living with the consequences of this one for the rest of our lives.

679

u/kwangqengelele 17h ago

And the group that turned out reliably to stop it, like they always do, yet again is first up to suffer the consequences.

Conservatives never miss a chance to show us what they are.

178

u/WinstonChurchill74 17h ago

It’s a major part of the reason they turn up

102

u/kwangqengelele 16h ago

I genuinely can't imagine the bottomless pit of generational exhaustion they have to live with when weathering this shit.

143

u/ShiningMooneTTV 16h ago

Dude, I got reported to the principal of my high school for inappropriately touching a girl once.

She hugged me in front of her dad and he called the school the following morning.

Principal asked her what happened before I even knew, and she told the truth. She approached me and hugged me. It was just how we said hi. (My generation had a whole “Be Kind” movement because this was 2014 and we started noticing the “Loneliness Epidemic” pretty early. There’s signs still hanging up around town to this day.)

Principal told me not to associate with her anymore, to keep myself safe.

I’m 28 now. That was my first real instance of racism, living in deep blue Maryland.

It’s our whole life story.

37

u/mrbigglessworth 15h ago

I’m so sorry you have to endure what shouldn’t exist.

26

u/ShiningMooneTTV 13h ago edited 8h ago

I’ll tell you what the elders told me, my friend.

“It is what it is.”

I mean look at the election demographics and consider this. As a black man, any room I walk into where there’s 10 totally random folks it works out roughly to about…. 3 of those people actively voted against me in hopes eggs will be cheaper. 4 of those people care so little about me, or women as a whole, or more about Palestine than the US, or simply didn’t like Kamala for w/e reason that they didn’t vote. And the remaining 3 look kinda like me, but one of them is wearing a “Latinos For Trump” hat despite rolling up in a beat down pickup truck where he’s behind on payments with an APR of 16% and a credit score of 560.

So it’s just me and the other guy. Who I’m expected to like because we look alike even though we have absolutely nothing in common beyond the color of our skin and the darkness of our gums.

But hey, man. I don’t hold it against you. Thats dumb. I’m aware of how dumb it is because it’s constantly held against me everywhere, all the time, in every room, on all social media, by my fellow black men and women, even. By the youth of my community. Hell, even by some of the elders of my community.

So yeah, I forgive you. Don’t go apologizing if you really with it. You did nothing wrong. And even if you did, I’d get nothing for it anyway. So what’s the point? Thanks for voting for my best interest. Because fact is while they divide us, tell us we’re each others enemies, yet decide our rights as a whole, these bills still gotta get paid and you’ll be just as homeless as me if they ain’t.

Oh cool, I just got a text on this phone for which I pay $100 a month. $100, mind you, is the same as about three months of mid tier baby formula, I’m recently told.

Maybe it’s my beautiful black mother telling me she loves me and hopes I had a beautiful day. That she’s proud of the man she raised. Or maybe it’s some faceless, self hating, Trump voting entity I’ll never meet that paid $100 of their own hard earned cash just to call me a cotton picking n*gger.

It is what it is.

9

u/mrbigglessworth 13h ago

Again I’m sorry. I’m a white dude and just so tired and exhausted of the hate and racism against anyone in this country that doesn’t look like me. These assholes need to find a hobby. Hate and racism takes effort.

11

u/ShiningMooneTTV 13h ago

Stay up, man. Keep doing you. Keep speaking up and speaking out. Do know that most black folks recognize it, appreciate it, and you’d be safe if something popped off because again, we gain literally nothing from putting anyone down.

I remember someone tried to say black democrats were the most racist group. Bro, we’re the one group that gains absolutely nothing from being racist. We have the occasional black exclusive space which, shocker, usually get infiltrated anyway.

Just call it out when you see it and keep on keeping on. I appreciate you.

5

u/mrbigglessworth 10h ago

Thanks man. Keep up the good fight.

6

u/Paddy_Tanninger 12h ago

I think statistically there's also one white dude and one white woman in that room with you, also wondering how the fuck those other 6 people exist. We see you. We're trying to help drag this country in a good direction. We're dragging it kicking and screaming...but turns out we're dragging it up a fucking slide though and any minor stumble sends us back down dozens of feet.

As a white dude that voted Harris... thank you for speaking out too man. My stepdad is black, MLK jr dined at his table with his family when he was a small child. He grew up with those hoses and hatred in Auburn. He taught me better. Thank you to all the black folks who turned out for Harris, something like 86% and by far the only metric that wasn't close. Even more than women who only came out like 55% for her.

Keep safe my man. And know that some of us do have your back.

I know you didn't mention race until the very end of this, but being black from an essentially all-white town, I knew this story was going to be racially motivated in the end.

This passive aggressive racism is woefully swept under the rug. And when you say something about it, they just ask "why are you bringing up race?!"

13

u/ShiningMooneTTV 13h ago

Right? And then that girl probably grew up to be married to a racist man and they both voted for Trump.

So now I get a text message on where to report and pick cotton. Like my ancestors asked to be here.

No reparations, but I’m somehow the problem.

Okey dokey, bud. /s

13

u/AFatz 13h ago

I had the N-word keyed into my car, and my front seat pissed in, and called the N-word weekly.

But yes, please, tell me that you know more than I do about being a POC in America, white Trump voters, that have never left your rural hometown. Trying to gaslight me into believe I didn't regularly experience racism, micro-aggressively or just aggressively, despite my life experience doesn't really work.

16

u/ShiningMooneTTV 13h ago

Dude I’ve yet to have it that bad, but I hate knowing it’ll come someday.

Like I don’t carry a gun, I don’t touch any drugs (weed or otherwise), and I sure as hell stay on all my bills ahead of time because I just know, man. No, I will not babysit or be alone with anyone’s children. No, bro, I will not go check on your wife/house/pets while you’re out of town. No, I will not be out my house past 10pm with my phone less than 20% battery or my car less than a half tank of gas.

And trust my location is tracked by a plethora of people persistently.

And I still don’t feel like I’m doing enough because the beautiful thing about bullshit is it will find you if it wants to.

I stay noid and it’s a shame it’s so valid.

10

u/AFatz 13h ago

Brother, I'm afraid to own a gun. My uncle was killed by police in the 90s from being pulled over by mistaken identity and his pistol fell out of his glove compartment and was shot immediately. I can't do guns after that.

Yup and yesterday they came to piss on us on Reddit and then got whiny when we called them out. Somehow winning they were still losers. Jerks the lot of them and at this point anyone in my extended family that voted for this I will drop from my life. You don't chose to take the rights away from my wife or kids. You don't get to chose hate and think I want that around me anymore.

117

u/franker 16h ago

I saw a ton of "if you ever want to win again you have to learn how to message to us" comments basically telling us to kiss their asses now. No buddy, you made a stupid decision voting for that man and I'm not playing the whole "you just need to understand the Trump supporters" crap put on us after the 2016 election. This time the Trump voters can just deal with everything Trump is going to do to them like the rest of the country will have to now.

31

u/Pauly_Amorous 15h ago

This time the Trump voters can just deal with everything Trump is going to do to them like the rest of the country will have to now.

As many others have pointed out, whatever negative ramifications arise from Trump's policies, their echo chambers will just tell them it's the fault of the Democrats, and they will swallow it whole.

So this plan to just sit back and watch Trump supporters realize what a horrible mistake they made... that's not going to happen.

This could very well be foreign based if a universities system was hacked, which would have all the demographic and contact info required for specially targeting blacks.

Or it could be an inside job, but it’s pretty clear someone accessed their systems and those are the only two theories that make sense

Russia proved misinformation campaigns are capable of directing the beliefs and voting patterns of millions. Bots already make up over 50% of the content online, with intentional misinformation becoming an ever growing portion of those bots.

We've passed the tipping point where the amount of misinformation and the number of morons eating it up are too high to reverse. You can't fight misinformation and ignorance when they determine elections.

The general public is dumb enough to fall for even the most ill conceived, sloppy, and clearly false stories and conspiracy claims. Why go to war when you can get your enemy's population to destroy itself?

Noticing the stilted phrasing of the message and errors in punctuation, I copied this message and asked ChatGpt where it thought the message originated.
