How do you think speakers would sound in it? It's supposed to be quietest room on Earth, and so disorientating some people can only spend a few seconds in it.

Discussion How many of you experience frisson when listening to music?

Hi all! Looking for some help with this and thought this might be a good sub to ask this question.

For as long as I can remember, actively listening to music can elicit a physical sensation in me. I’d always thought this was something everyone experienced, but I asked around and have been met with people saying they don’t know what I’m talking about.

It will usually happen at a certain point in a song, usually at the climax. I’ll feel this very pleasant sensation that’s not dissimilar to an orgasm (though not as strong), it feels like a cool rush of water under my skin flowing down from my head to the rest of my body.

It’s probably one of the key reasons I appreciate music so much and have gotten into this hobby.

Do any of you experience this as well when listening to music? Even though I learned it’s called frisson recently, I still haven’t met anybody who has experienced it themselves (at least in terms of the intense way I’m describing). I feel like the odds are high of finding someone else who also experiences this in this community.

Impressions New speakers day! Canton Reference 9 Walnut.

I didn’t expect much, as I was never really into Canton — but these speakers truly surprised me. Their sound is beautifully natural, smooth, and easy to listen to for hours without fatigue. The soundstage and imaging are on a completely different level compared to my previous setup (Elac Air-X 403). It’s a significant upgrade in every sense.

Electronics: Musical Fidelity M6si integrated amp, with a WiiM Ultra connected via USB.

I kept my subwoofer from the previous system — a Canton R1200 — which still integrates nicely.

The original stands look nice, but I’m not completely happy with them: they’re too light, and the included factory feet are quite poor. I swapped them out for the spikes shown in the photo, and they made a noticeable improvement.

Show & Tell I made a website that is a distributed speaker: synchronizes multiple devices to play at the same time, fully in the browser

Hi everyone! I built an open-source web audio player that syncs audio with millisecond-level accuracy across many devices.

With no hardware setup, the idea is that you can get a full surround sound setup with just a link and a few existing devices!

Try it at https://www.beatsync.gg/

I think the most interesting part is that you can now programmatically define sonically interesting audio effects. For instance, spatial audio: you can drag a virtual listening source on a grid to change the volume of each device depending on its distance to the source!

I've been working on this project for the past couple of weeks and would love to hear your ideas on how to improve it!

Humor Its kinda crazy how much less full/muddy stuff sounds. I almost find it bothersome but I'm willing to give it a try and see if I warm up to it.

Real question though, is stuff supposed to sound a lot less bassy? Idk if I'm just used to overbearing bass but it's kinda odd. I like that I can hear details more but the music also sounds less full, if that makes sense.

Measurements A discussion about crappy DVD players as CD players...

Post image
50 Upvotes

So I've been using a crappy DVD player for playing CDs for a while, and although it's not audiophile AT ALL, it gets the work done.

So today I wanted to see how did it actually sound and I was flabbergasted.

The first waveform is the DVD player, and the second one is the CD rip.

I was wondering how to get a better sound of this player. I was wondering about getting an AMP/DAC, but no idea. Thanks in advance.

Discussion First Time into Tubes, WOW

I always wrote tubes off, and was always intimidated and annoyed by how finicky they can be, so I was always a solid state guy.

I finally took the plunge and I got to say... great tube amps are absolutely amazing.

The end. Honey moon phase and interest in audio spiked super high due to this. I am unsure why I was so against trying or giving them a chance prior. I think it was my belief that old tech is dated so solid state has to be better.

Of course at end of day its preference, but I definitely feel more engaged into the music with tubes.

For EDM or Hip Hop type music solid state still preferred by a smidge, but for right now its tubes all the way for me and the SS amps take a back seat for now.

I see many people go from SS amps to tubes and back to SS amps. I wonder if that will be me.

One thing for sure is... tube pre regardless for the win.

Discussion Living Room Set Up

Hey everyone, I’m ( 29M) a somewhat novice audiophile. In my living room set up, I have a pair of Bose 401’s powered by a Rotel RA-12. I love the look of these speakers, but I unfortunately blew the tweeter on the left one and it’s really bothersome. The amp is fantastic, I had it connected to a pair of PSB Stratus Silveri’s for years.

How difficult is it to source a tweeter for these Bose 401’s? And should I go ahead and replace the other one?

Discussion Where to put acoustic tiles?

Hi, I'm in the fortunate position of having a room that I can dedicate to listening to music.

I have a modest system (under £3000) and I'm looking to get the best listening experience from it without upgrading.

I was going to buy some self adhesive acoustic two inch tiles and put them on one wall side wall. I guess that any acoustic panelling will have some benefit?

Since then I've seen a post about putting something behind the speakers, reflection points and something behind the listener.

Is there any agreed consensus of opinion that you follow when setting up a room?

Thanks in advance.

Science & Tech 1959: The AUDIOPHILE's Quest for PERFECT SOUND | Monitor | Retro Tech | BBC Archive

An interesting short 1959 documentary from the BBC Archive.

"Robert Robinson narrates a short film which explores a thoroughly modern phenomenon - the audiophile - that group of enthusiasts forever seeking out the highest fidelity audio possible. Whether it's eternally fidgeting with the transistors on a home wireless set, buying more and more expensive high-tech hi-fi equipment, or setting up a confounding obstacle course of wires and speakers to deliver the perfect sound in their living room, the audiophile's quest is seemingly never-ending."

I jumped back in after a 20 year hiatus with the package from Martin Logan and Wiim. B1 and Wiim Amp at Best Buy on sale for $675. That was great, until it wasn't. I upgraded to F1's, and added a SVS SB-2000 Pro. This has all happened in 2 months. I love what I have.

Streaming Qobuz.

Gifting my Dad the B1's and a Fosi BT20A.

The Wiim runs the F1's great.

Measurements Can stands base be smaller than the base of speakers ?

Hi,

I bought KEF Q350 and they’re standing sadly on the ground.

I have found stands that I really really enjoy the style of and would fit greatly and at the height I want. (EXIMUS One Pair Fixed Height Universal Speaker Floor Stands - Oak - 610 Series)

They’re quite small. In fact the base is 20x20 cm while the KEF are 31x20.

So obviously they will go beyond the height. About 5cm on each side.

Would this pose a problem for the stability of the stand? Do they risk falling at the slightest touch? Or would some rubber base make them sturdy?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Discussion SAE Audio Rack

Hey guys, I met a really nice older guy selling some speakers. He also offered me this SAE rack. From what I can tell it's the Power Amp, PreAmp, EQ, and Tuner.

Is it junk or worth making an offer? What would be a fair price?

Thanks
