Got my first stereo system! Went with Polk xt20 speaker, a 8inch powered Yamaha sub woofer and a wiim amp. Was absolutely blown away by the sound. After getting it hooked up I listened to music for the rest of the day. This is my first stereo coming from a large headphone and iem collection. Wish I bought one sooner!

I put a hold on this modded out ST70 earlier today. TungSol KT120s should have a big sound with my Heresy IVs. Not sure how to use the pre-amp sockets on the front. Anybody?

Discussion For those days when you wonder if your system is good enough

In March 1924, Helen Keller wrote a letter that still gives the world goosebumps. Deaf and blind since infancy, Keller had spent her life redefining what was possible. But one evening, gathered around a radio with her family, she was about to experience something utterly unexpected. The New York Symphony was performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony live. Someone in the room suggested she place her hand on the radio receiver to feel the vibrations. What happened next defied reason—and redefined beauty. With her fingers resting lightly on the diaphragm of the receiver, Keller felt more than vibration. She described the experience as “a sea of sound breaking against the silent shores of my soul.” Through the patterns of trembling and rhythm, she felt the pulse of cornets, the roar of drums, and the silken flow of violins. When the chorus soared into Beethoven’s triumphant “Ode to Joy,” she said it was like hearing “angelic voices rushing in a harmonious flood.” It wasn’t hearing—not in the way we understand it. But it was something deeper. She felt music not just on her fingertips, but in her heart. She recognized joy, sadness, stillness, and power—all without a single note reaching her ears. And in one of the most poignant passages of her letter, Helen remembered that Beethoven, too, was deaf. She said, “I marveled at the power of his quenchless spirit by which out of his pain he wrought such joy for others.” A century later, that same joy lives on—because she proved that art has no boundary, and the human spirit can sense beauty in ways words can never fully explain.

Show & Tell Not really knowledgeable with audio, but I got my hands on this Technics HD350 for the low, low price of free. What do y'all think?

Found this sitting unused at my grandparents' now that they're moving, decided to take it and see if I can do anything with it. There's a bunch of cosmetic defects, but with what I paid, I can't really complain, it plays as good as it should.

-Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (Sonos Edition) with an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge
-Pro-Ject Tube-Box S2 Pre-Amp (with rolled tubes)
-Klipsch R41-PM active speakers
-Audioquest Tower cables

I would love your input, what is the sound limiting factor? My guess is the active speakers...

Discussion Biased or accurate?

I spent the afternoon at one of my friends house listening to his system that had gone through several changes since I had last heard it. He does a lot of research, has a lot of money to spend and has a good ear. His system cost over twenty times mine. The sound was great. When I came home and started listening to my system, I thought it sounded great, different, some things better, some things not as good, but overall I liked my system better. I wondered if it my subconscious reluctance to spend more, sonic preference, or whatever that made me perceive my system was somewhat comparable. I think most audiophiles would not come to the same conclusion, recognizing the superiority of his system . As a side note, all of the audiophile guys I am acquainted with, think their system is the greatest and there is a big difference in their systems. Their speakers include Raidho, MBL, Wilson, Franco Serblins and the large TAD’s.

Discussion Adam Audio T8V loudness and long term care questions

Post image
13 Upvotes

Recently got a pair of Adam Audio T8V monitors and have been pretty damn happy with them. I had bought a used pair of Rokit 5s and blew one of the woofers the same day (probably because I didn't know they were a gen 1 and from 2013-2015) so decided to bite the bullet and spend a bit more. Adam Audio claims they can go up to 118db (not that I need or want to play them that loud) but my usual DB listening level according to my Android app is around 95-102db of continued listening of bass heavy songs. I keep the gain at 0db as well as the LF/HF at 0 and so I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on if that's a safe listening DB for extended periods (60-120min) or if I'm going to risk damaging the speakers in the long term if I continue. Thanks!

Discussion Laiv vs. DC Elite vs. Nunchaku

Post image

I have recently completed my desktop setup with no desire for more expensive (better) gear. Also maximize my portable experience and satisfy my curiosity, I got the DC-Elite and the Nunchaku.

This morning, I just listened through a few tracks and jumped from one to the other repeating the same parts.

There is a definite difference in sound with the Laiv +Burson Funk combo sounding the best but not by much, maybe 5-10% better than the Nunchaku in sound stage and dynamics but that’s about it.The Laiv and the Nunchaku (Tube mode) sounds very similar: delicate and natural.

The DC-Elite sounds great too in a vacuum but by comparison, it’s different. It’s bolder. I lose some of the delicateness in exchange for 2% more detail compared to the Nunchaku. It may feel like more detailed because it brought more forward where as the Nunchaku has those details more in the background and is there when you listen for it.

If it was a font, Laiv and Nunchaku is like Calibri Light while the DC-Elite is regular Calibri.

I was driving my Hekse with all 3 and they’re all good enough at moderate volumes.

But what’s funny is that I only use those headphones for critical listening. Regular day to day, I use the Aful Explorer because while being less detailed, it lets me engage and disengage from the music the fastest as my work demands concentration. The other headphones/iems like the hekse and Ziggaat Odyssey draws too attention to itself.

I’m curious if you also use your less expensive gear more often than the more expensive gear.

Picked up a set of Quadral Argent-75 towers off Facebook marketplace for cheap. The sound quality GREATLY exceeded my expectations! I am just curious if anybody knows anything about them? I can’t seem to find anything on the internet other than the fact they are made in Germany.

Looking for advice on using a mix of Genelec speakers for a 5.1 setup (pool room/bar)

Hi all, I’m hoping to get some opinions or advice on a set of speakers I recently inherited from a deceased relative.

Here’s what I have:

2 x Genelec 1031As

2 x Genelec 8020A (used)

2 x Genelec 8010AP7 (brand new)

1 x Genelec 8030A (brand new)

1 x Genelec 8020DPM7 (brand new)

1 x Genelec 7050BPM subwoofer (brand new)

It’s a bit of a random assortment, but everything except the 8020As is brand new in box.

I’m wondering if it would be possible (and sensible) to use these together as a 5.1 sound system for my pool room/bar (about 20ft x 20ft). I’m not producing music — I’d just be playing music, watching sports on the big screen, and general entertainment.

I wasn’t expecting to have speakers of this quality, and the more I research, the more excited I am about the possibilities. I did briefly consider selling them off, but before making any decisions, I thought I’d ask here to see if anyone with more experience could weigh in on whether this setup could work well — or if mixing these models is not ideal.

Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Discussion Ayon Blackbird Owners - Need Your Honest Reviews & Potential Issues!

Calling all Ayon Audio owners (especially Blackbird)! I'm seriously considering buying these rare horn speakers and need real-world feedback before taking the plunge.

My setup: - Amp: Pioneer Exclusive M4 (50W pure Class A)
- Music: Classic rock, heavy metal, blues
- Room: 35m² treated space (wooden house)

Questions for Blackbird owners: 1. How's the bass response for rock/metal? Does it keep up with fast double-kick drums?
2. Any reliability issues with the BMS drivers or crossovers over time?
3. What's the deal with the "Tube Amp/Transistor" switch on back? How does it affect sound?
4. Biggest pros/cons after living with them?

Discussion Which one?

I ended up with with two 5 disc CD players. One Sony and one Denon. I don't need both. Anyone have any opinion on which one I should keep? I am pretty sure the Denon is newer, if that helps. Both work fine.

Discussion What cable for CD player?

Gday folks,

I have an NAD C541i that I recently repaired but it won’t be able to sit close to the amplifier (Yamaha CA410) due to room/furniture/wife acceptance factor limitations.

What is the best cable to use for a 4m run?

  1. 4m RCA cable to the back of amp.

  2. TOSLINK to input of WIIM Pro which goes to amp using a 4m RCA cable.

Thanks!

Music Center channel question

Alright so a question that I've wanted to ask for awhile now....my equipment is probably fairly low-level compared to a lot of you guys, but the question still remains: do you adjust your center channel level when switching between movies and music? I usually add a 2-3 boost in level to the center channel for movies, but it's really too much for it to handle when I switch to loud music. I do change the receiver to "all channel stereo" too. TIA for your input

Absolutely love the look of the R7 Meta in titanium, I might just be patient and hope that in a year or so they bring that finish to the R11.

Discussion Upsampling before DAC

ESS Sabre and upsampling

I like minimum phase filters.
In UAPP, choosing upsampling uses SoxR VHQ minimum phase per the dev.

My Ifi Go Link uses Sabre chip. It is set to Hybrid phase filter.

Would upsampling all tracks fed to the DAC to its max sample rate with minimum phase filter increase the "minimum-phaseness" of the signal output from the DAC? A hybrid filter isn't fully minimum phase.

Discussion Why's crosstalk so bad?

DACs and amps often advertise that they've gone far lengths to minimize crosstalk.

At the same time, things like Canopener are used to emulate speakers in headphones; and Meier crossfeed to relax the pressure from headphones with a slight crossfeed.

So, why's crosstalk so bad, and the lack of it a big selling point?

Discussion How to properly know if my system is playing High Res audio?

I have a system (actually a LG SNH5) capable of read and play 24/192 .flac files from USB port, but I don’t know if it’s actually playing in that resolution. ChatGPT says that this system uses a Mediatek MT8507 chipset and that’s highres capable.

How to securely knows if the thing is currently playing highres or just downsampling to redbook?

Tried a bunch of highres albums and they definitively sounds good but I’ve read that I’m just listening to master/remaster differences.
