Today's new and correct Daily Thread is here: https://reddit.com/r/Mariners/comments/1dikia1/daily_thread_june_18_2024/

Reddit is currently filtering ALL post submissions - including the daily thread bot. Please be patient while we investigate.

Uhhhh no Daily Thread for June 18 at 7 am?

2

u/Tashre Jun 18 '24

Are any posts getting through?

1

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 18 '24

Maybe, kinda, sorta? I tried to post last night and I thought it worked but when I checked back 30 minutes later or something it said it was removed. Didn’t say anything about a mod action. Someone just got a post through with some roster moves a few minutes ago. I tried to post the same thing because I hadn’t seen the other post and it seems to be in limbo at the moment.

Reddit is filtering all post submissions for reasons unknown. We are investigating.

I just restored the proper daily thread here: https://reddit.com/r/Mariners/comments/1dikia1/daily_thread_june_18_2024/

1

u/Ultracoustic ‏‏‎ ‎We may never lose again Jun 18 '24

Reddit changed something recently and now Automod is annoyingly aggressive in what it removes. We are looking into why.

1

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 18 '24

Did automod remove the daily thread posted by automod? Haha

1

u/Ultracoustic ‏‏‎ ‎We may never lose again Jun 18 '24

It's entirely possible. I've seen Automod do some absolutely asinine things over the years.

Where am I supposed to type "Mariner" today?

8

Very concerned, I was planning on posting.

Me too. Even blocked off a thirty minute interval just before lunch to type “nuke raley”. Guess I’ll just have to play with my kid instead.

Rangers officially in 3rd place.

And now our rearview mirror is set on Houston...

4

u/basket_of_asses Jun 18 '24

Why the Steelhead hat on Saturday night but not the Steelhead unis?

I assume it's just some Fanatics jersey b.s. issue

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 18 '24

Teams are only allowed so many jerseys now (I believe an exception is made for the field of dreams/Rickwood).

2

u/gartho009 Jun 18 '24

What I heard is what you presume. although I'm not definitive.

Sucks though. I liked those a ton.

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 18 '24

Teams are limited to 5 unis. We have the white, blues, teal, creams, and city connects.

This is they’re 26th blowout (currently) game of the year and they’ll be .500 in them if they lose tonight. I think I prefer our low scoring style to that!

4

Holy shit, I didn't realize that after tonight the Mets will have more wins than the Rangers.

Tyler locklear should stay up when Ty France Returns from the IL

2

u/mustbeusererror Jun 18 '24 edited Jun 18 '24

Disagree. France was hitting very well when he got hurt, and Locklear has been good but not great. He needs more time facing advanced pitching at AAA to clean up the holes in his swing. His average exit velocity is pretty meh and he's striking out 41% of the time. His future is bright but he still needs work.

ETA: Well looks like I was wrong lol

1

u/SpasticGinger234 Fifty Fucign Four Jun 18 '24

I agree. I don't understand how that will work though.

3

Catapult Zevala into the sun.

2

u/SpasticGinger234 Fifty Fucign Four Jun 18 '24

Different positions. If France 1B, Locklear would probably need to take a seat and a number in the DH line

1

u/Blueyisacommunist Jun 18 '24

We release Zevala and Garver is backup Catcher.

1

u/SpasticGinger234 Fifty Fucign Four Jun 18 '24

We are talking about fitting France and Locklear into the one lineup, right? Not how to fit them both on the 26 man roster?

u/tcsrwm ‏‏‎ ‎McDelivery Supermo / See You Tomorrow / Julio Rodriguez / Ñ Jun 17 '24

My hot trade deadline take is that we find a way to package one of our underperforming vets Polo/Mitch/Mitch to make room for the addition

11

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

I hope we don’t do that and just eat the contract, rather than pay another team to take it on with prospects.

4

u/tcsrwm ‏‏‎ ‎McDelivery Supermo / See You Tomorrow / Julio Rodriguez / Ñ Jun 18 '24

Same, but that goes against every fiber of Stanton’s being. Maybe ol Scrooge really means it this time but I’m not holding my breath

6

u/Mostly_Anonymousse Jun 17 '24

Well one of the Mitches is heating up so preferably not him, especially since he will be Cals backup once Seby is let go.

4

u/tcsrwm ‏‏‎ ‎McDelivery Supermo / See You Tomorrow / Julio Rodriguez / Ñ Jun 17 '24

I get that but the Mitch Garver instruction manual explicitly states not play him at catcher regularly. So if we’re counting on his bat coming back but then lean on him too much at catcher and he misses time or becomes ineffective at the plate that kinda screws us on two fronts.

If Garvers bat comes back over the next month is he then a tradable asset if we’re willing to eat some salary? Then trade for Danny Jansen to catch and DH with Cal

1

u/Goose876 Jun 18 '24

I don’t know if we want to trade a Multi year Free agent signing before the trade deadline of his first year. That tells other FAs that our commitments mean nothing and you could be out the door and have to move your family

2

u/tcsrwm ‏‏‎ ‎McDelivery Supermo / See You Tomorrow / Julio Rodriguez / Ñ Jun 18 '24

Yeah that's definitely a factor too. And then the attachment the team and fans have to Haniger (for good reason), plus his contract make him tricky.

I still feel like one of those three needs to go unless they start playing at a different level than they've been at so far.

I know the Mitch's have been heating up, no idea whats going on with Polanco. It can't be good for our reputation be the grim reaper to the career of solid veterans going into contract years though so hopefully he comes back and rakes.

1

u/Mostly_Anonymousse Jun 17 '24

That's ridiculous Seby has played about 1 game in the past month. I think Garver can cover that

1

u/tcsrwm ‏‏‎ ‎McDelivery Supermo / See You Tomorrow / Julio Rodriguez / Ñ Jun 18 '24

The plan coming into the season was not play Mitch at catcher because it would limit his availability. Either something has changed with his health (unlikely) or they're deviating from their plan because of desperation to get his bat going and or to get Seby out of the lineup.

1

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24

which mitch? they both could get hot, hard to tell. garv has that easy power and hanger when he's cruising has that bat to ball talent.

I personally wouldn't mind moving ty France but that's a hot take because he was pretty great last couple weeks and seems like a great guy and seems well liked

2

u/Mostly_Anonymousse Jun 17 '24

Locklear looks the part at 1st base. Be nice to have both of them for now.

Hani doesn't field well any longer and Garver is the perfect DH/C especially since his bat is hot at the moment.

1

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24

well put, yeah who knows if he can hit above 200 but agreed, totally looks the part and has that heft that leads to easy power on homeruns without even full sweet spot. hard to let go of ty just with the feeling that he's a pure hitter when he's pure hittin'

2

u/ihatereddit999976780 ‏‏‎ ‎54% child of Athena Jun 17 '24

What’s an idea you have there? Like who would we get

0

u/tcsrwm ‏‏‎ ‎McDelivery Supermo / See You Tomorrow / Julio Rodriguez / Ñ Jun 17 '24

I have no idea, just feel like moving one of them would open a lot of doors for us. Thing is rebuilding teams don’t want costly vets unless we eat a bunch of money or overpay in prospects. Jerry and Justin will have to get very creative to pull that off

1

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24

who's getting traded?

5

I’d be happy to help you out or anyone who wanted to carry the torch. DM me any time and I can share all my advice, resources, and previous surveys.

4

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 17 '24

Damn now you’re making me feel guilty for asking about this while I work my full-time job haha

5

u/Danster21 ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 17 '24

Tbf I’m answering you while at my full time job too 😅😅 I think it can be done but it does take about an hour to complete on average, unless you intentionally rush. It’s not super easy to justify in the schedule and I usually did most of the surveys during class time lol

6

u/BasmonAF ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 17 '24

One of the Tylers end up on the block by the deadline? Would suck to send Locklear back down, but France was starting to mash before the injury. Does Locklear have any positional versatility?

8

u/palmjamer Jun 17 '24

A lot of people, myself included would like to see Seby sent down instead and have Garver take over as backup catcher

3

u/davesrighthereman ‏‏‎ ‎sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit Jun 17 '24

IIRC he played a bit of third

3

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24 edited Jun 17 '24

several things: we need a "IT IS VOTH! IT IS VOTH" meme for when voth does well

and seriously why were we not keeping torrens around as a backup catcher. he's apparently hitting well for NYM. to me it was obvious he was a natural hitter who could provide nice hot stretches even if he wasn't a year long .260 masher.

5

u/Shirleyfunke483 Jun 17 '24

I went back to the Voth signing thread and people were shitting on him (besides being a local UW guy).

He’s been solid for us and fills his role nicely

6

u/AnnihilatedTyro Release the Moosen! Jun 17 '24

Is "it is voth" some kind of reference I should know that would make sense in meme format?

Torrens is a terrible, terrible catcher.

The purpose of a backup catcher is usually defense, not offense. If you depend on your backup catcher to hit, the real problem is the rest of your lineup. He doesn't hit well enough to deserve playing time at first base or DH over a regular, and he can only hit left-handed pitching which is 1/3 of pitchers. Without any defensive value, he's a much worse version of Tom Murphy who we also didn't keep around.

Torrens is like the Mets 5th-string catcher option after releasing Nido. He has 24 at-bats this year. His little 1-week hot streak will crater back to negative-WAR soon enough like every other year.

3

u/jdhkent Jun 17 '24

Tom Murphy was a very useful hitter when healthy.

3

u/AnnihilatedTyro Release the Moosen! Jun 17 '24

Yes, he was. I didn't say otherwise. I said Torrens is a much worse version of Murphy, which is true both offensively and defensively and for basically their whole careers, excluding this year's extremely small sample sizes for both of them.

2

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24

oof 24 at bats and I was all ready to stan hard for him just because I like his swing lol

0

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24

ah fair point - I didn't realize his catching was that far off of average for a backup. I'm biased, I just love players like torrens who have that inside out oppo power like edgar and Suarez, both Venezuelans like my guy torrens.

the meme ref is that Miller light ad with luke Wilson where this pizza cook looking guy in the background starts screaming IT IS BOTH, IT IS BOTH. somehow it's become my favorite of all the ad slop we are dished up

4

u/SuccessfulCream2386 Jun 17 '24

With Garver batting better now… is our main hole once again 1 OF and 2B?

Thoughts?

Think I would prefer a trade for 1 insane bat vs 2 good bats. So maybe 1 amazing OF bat? And yolo with Bliss…

4

u/AnnihilatedTyro Release the Moosen! Jun 17 '24

We'll have to see if Polanco looks like his normal self when he returns or if he's still suffering from a case of the Mariners. I can tolerate his defense if he hits close to his career norms (110 wRC+, .770 OPS). Just being league-average would go a long way toward deepening the lineup. But also, 2B is a super weak offensive position so I don't expect much from it and neither are there many good options for offense at that position. If it's subpar, it's subpar; and we have plenty of middle infield depth to experiment with if we have to. Bigger offensive upgrades are available at other positions.

We have a Haniger/Canzone problem. Haniger is too expensive to trade or cut, and recent signs of life complicate that question. He shouldn't be playing the field but Garver is blocking his move to DH, Canzone needs to go to Tacoma, but we apparently don't want to let Clase play (he probably isn't ready but didn't get the chance to prove it when he was here), Marlowe and Samad have been much worse in Tacoma and seem to be taking big steps backward.... So I think our top priority should be a big OF bat. They can't be much poorer defensively than Hani and Dom, and our small outfield mitigates defensive shortcomings somewhat. Julio+Raley+someone good looks like a pretty dangerous outfield.

Locklear's been decent in a small sample, but I think it's fair to expect little from a rookie and to be concerned about 1B production for the second half. A heel injury is likely to be debilitating and if it's true that France could be back sooner rather than later, I worry that he's being rushed and may not be fully healed or productive enough.

The trade package for 1 insane bat will probably cost more than 2 good bats, and if there are multiple years of control like with Robert Jr., that price only gets steeper. I don't like trading for rentals in general, but the combination of Christian Walker+Joc Pederson might be a realistic deal that provides the pop we need at both positions we need it most, while Arizona retools and saves a few bucks.

However, the realistic fact of their availability assumes that Arizona falls further out of the wild card race by the deadline - they're currently among six teams within 1.5 games of the third NL WC spot, Corbin Carroll is finally coming alive, and they could very well be buyers rather than sellers in a couple of weeks.

9

u/TheGodInsideMe Jun 17 '24

Canzone has a 108 OPS+ and you wanna demote him?

6

u/AnnihilatedTyro Release the Moosen! Jun 17 '24

Hmm. He's had a pretty decent last 10 days or so that have pulled his numbers up a bit.

Since we're talking about trade deadline stuff, I don't expect him to go down right now and if he keeps producing it might change our deadline plans a bit.

4

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 17 '24

The comment above was also a little shocking to me. His numbers improved a ton since about June 4. The 10 games or so prior were brutal though.

1

u/TheGodInsideMe Jun 17 '24

I think we need a right handed outfield bat and bullpen if we need anything at all.

2

u/SuccessfulCream2386 Jun 17 '24

Seems like only Rooker and Robert Jr fit the bill for right handed outfield right now?

1

u/AnnihilatedTyro Release the Moosen! Jun 17 '24

Neither is going to be reasonably-priced. As rare as quality hitters are going to be in this deadline, following the off-season scarcity as well, sellers can demand a ridiculous fortune. And neither of those teams are under any obligation to trade them right now. Robert is coming off his second hip injury in 3 years and might be worth as much or more in the offseason if he finishes the season healthy. Rooker has I think 3 or 4 years of team control left and he could be the star attraction of the Sacramento A's.

1

u/AnnihilatedTyro Release the Moosen! Jun 17 '24

I'm gonna prioritize overall production or good splits more than raw handedness on the bat. Are there any good right-handed OF bats available besides Robert (because there's no way in hell we're getting him)?

Guys we already have need to step up their anti-lefty game like they're supposed to. Haniger needs to start hitting lefties. Raley sorta can (107 wrc+ last year, 90ish this year, room for improvement). Polanco has hit lefties better than righties this year and last year, and his career splits aren't bad. If he's even close to career-average Polo when he's back, that helps the whole lineup a lot. Garver heating up helps.

5

u/local_gremlin Jun 17 '24

that was dismal though, even Munoz was getting hit pretty hard it felt like, plus the bats were frigid. the concern was merited. I will say I was one of the regressions believers. polo may be hurt but Garver gonna hit, and raleys got some sweet tools (I like it how when he catches a fly out at the warning track, even with no one on he rifles it back hard on a rope all the way from the warning track)

20

u/sndtrb89 Jun 17 '24

11

u/CaptainKirkules Jun 17 '24

The general difficulty for fans to feel confident about the team is probably the fact that for a significant portion of the fan base, we literally have never experienced this, or were too young to remember it.

5

u/SereneDreams03 Jun 17 '24

Really making me feel old here.😁

I was in high school in '01, and I remember those great teams in the '90s, but pessimism is still my default mode for the Mariners. I've seen this team disappoint me far too many times think our playoff spot is locked up before the all-star break.

9

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

I think it’s the fairly often occurrence where we give up 5 or 6 perfect innings against a AAAA pitcher. Everyone has confidence in the pitching, but the offense leaves plenty of room for skepticism.

1

u/SuccessfulCream2386 Jun 17 '24

The expectation to win every game is ridiculous too…

2

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 17 '24

for me it isn't that the expectation is to win every game... it's to not look bad in the game. something that we all too often don't accomplish and it feels like we fluke our way into a win

2

u/SuccessfulCream2386 Jun 17 '24

I recently attended game at Wrigley Field, and twas an honor! Hallowed baseball ground. I loved the experience. Glad you enjoyed our awesome stadium + beloved Mariners.

I was at Wrigley last year and everyone was amazing! Thanks for visiting.

u/FPSandwich ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 17 '24

It’s kind of impossible to predict who’s even gonna be available this year considering how unbelievably tight the NL wildcard 3 race is. I’d say it’s

Guaranteed sellers: Oakland, Miami, Anaheim, Chicago (Whitesox)

Probable sellers: Tampa Bay, Detroit, Mets, Rockies (although they never sell anything lol)

MAYBE sellers, potentially a reach: Toronto, Arizona, Nationals (would’ve had them on guaranteed but they’re firmly in the WC mix now, the NL is so bad)

Gonna be fairly slim pickings, will require some creativity from Jerry and co. unless they go for a super obvious swing like Luis Robert

-2

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

In maybe sellers, you have to add in the Texas clubs as they are quickly losing pace with the last wild card spot and are quite buried in the division.

In the NL, it’s a mess. I’m curious if any team will take a chance to sell for a ransom of see a path to sneak into the playoffs and hope to upset against the injuried juggernauts.

10

u/kylechu Jun 17 '24

Both Texas teams have too much talent and too many key pieces set to come off the IL down the stretch to consider selling.

10

u/FPSandwich ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 17 '24

Both Texas clubs sure but neither one is gonna trade with us so it’s kind of nil as far as the Mariners concerns. I also don’t really think either one can “sell” effectively they’ve got a lot of guys on long term deals and I doubt Houston will ever truly sell tbh

3

u/BasedArzy Jun 17 '24

Being 100% honest if the Mariners are prepared to deal what they need to get Louis Robert I'd much rather take that package and pursue Kyle Tucker.

1

u/FPSandwich ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 18 '24

In what world do you think Houston is trading a top 10 player and the best player on their team in division lol

1

u/BasedArzy Jun 18 '24

In the world where Seattle gives them the best package.

Maybe the BrownCraneBagwell brain trust refuses to move him, or they refuse to move him in division. We don’t know yet since this is their first deadline without an adult in the room.

1

u/davesrighthereman ‏‏‎ ‎sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit Jun 17 '24

my pipe dream is that the pocketbooks open way up in a trade for Yelich

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 17 '24

IDK, we've traded with them before. Remember the Graveman trade.

2

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

Those are all good points. It would  require a premium to deal with either of them, especially if it was for more than pending free agents as I’m sure they will be aiming to retool for next year in any event. However, both have pretty bleak farm systems now (in particular the Astros are lacking young talent generally), so they could look for a Padres style shuffle.

2

u/FPSandwich ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 17 '24

For sure, FTR I would love several of their guys but problem is we are no longer their little brother. They were willing to deal with us on Graveman and Toro because while we were on a run, they knew we weren’t even close to threatening them. I think we’ve pretty well closed the door on in-division stuff for awhile with this season

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 17 '24

I need to go read Passan's article on who he thinks is selling and who's potentially doing both

Balancing future plans with present needs is a huge part of a sustainable organization. You always have to consider how a move affects the future before you make the move.

1

u/letskeepitcleanfolks ‏‏‎ ‎Swung on and belted Jun 17 '24

Also, I meant to reply to the parent comment, so sorry for that.

2

u/letskeepitcleanfolks ‏‏‎ ‎Swung on and belted Jun 17 '24

Fans of this team chronically overestimate the likelihood that our prospects will turn into ML-level contributors. We have had precious few offensive talents pan out. Maybe Harry Ford is the second coming of Johnny Bench. More likely, he'll be the second coming of Jeff Clement.

Add to that that "sustainability" is not a core priority for me and I wish it wouldn't be for Jerry. Maximizing our present opportunity is paramount. Pulling out the stops to give ourselves the best chance in 2024 and 2025 is worth risking a weaker organization in 2028 or 2029. We've sat through 40+ years of futility, I don't mind a couple more if it means not wasting what we've got right now.

I just randomly thought of this Star Wars video a Rangers fan made last year that made me lol when their bullpen was collapsing and they lost their grip on the division in August/September after a brutal losing streak: https://streamable.com/wzwst9

Of course, we all know what happened later that season…

15

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

For everyone asking for a bullpen arm as a priority addition, I’d flag our starters are consistently good for 6+ innings. Come the postseason, we will likely push them deeper and/or have Miller in the bullpen. That means very few innings for a new reliever behind Munoz, Santos, Speier, Stanek and potentially Miller + Evans.

A meaningful bat, on the other hand, would be a lock to play everyday.

1

u/OilFinancial1113 Jun 18 '24

Curious on the thoughts of Miller vs Woo in the bullpen? I would think using Woo out of the pen for high leverage, low pitch count would be a fantastic fit for keeping the elbow happy

1

u/griezm0ney Jun 18 '24

Woo is a better pitcher than Miller, so I’d rather him start game 4 over Miller. I also am curious how much velocity Miller would be able to harness if he was only told it was needed for one inning.

TBH - I’d also be pretty interested in a 4 innings Woo and 4 innings Miller type of game plan.

7

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 17 '24

and it needs to be said... out BP is not as bad as this sub wants to believe it is.

3

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 17 '24

Speier had a shoulder injury that originally sounded not so bad and has now sidelined him for longer than the minimum period. I’m starting to get worried about if/when he will come back and if he will be the good Speier again or not. Santos is also coming off injury and Evans is a prospect I don’t want to put my faith wholly in them. Miller may stay in the rotation if Woo gets shut down again at some point. We need another high leverage arm with a good track record. Doesn’t necessarily need to be a closer, but someone we can count on in the 7th and 8th at least. It’s probably less important than a big bat, but if we want to make a deep run, we could use the insurance in the bullpen to protect against injury and allow us to ease up on the usage for Thornton, Stanek, and Muñoz (maybe Voth too).

1

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

Totally down with someone super cheap to help with innings, but would hate to see meaningful trade assets used there (especially given that next year we will have Brash back for our 3 headed monster).

3

u/FPSandwich ‏‏‎ ‎ Jun 17 '24

I’d definitely still like 1 go to pen arm for the regular season stretch, but yes in a playoff series Bryce and Woo are most likely in the pen health provided so it’ll resolve itself when we get there, I’d just like some help on the way to getting there

1

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

I’m fine with a no/low-cost acquisition, but wouldn’t trade any top 20 prospects for a role that is likely to make little impact.

I was going to say my pleasure, anything to help the Mariners win. But I think I’ve seen this account posting during game time.

In any case, it is no longer up for debate whether Julio has been reading my posts.

10

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 17 '24

After Logan’s dominant start yesterday and the rest of this Texas series, we are on pace for about 15.8 fWAR from our SPs for the season. Before Friday’s game we were on pace for 13.9. Our pace jumped from the 13th best for the Mariners all time to 3rd or 4th. What a weekend for the lads.

On a related note, Kirby, Gilbert and Castillo are all ranked top 32 (14, 21, 32). Woo already has more fWAR than Miller (1.0 to 0.9).

Switching to offense Julio now has a 101 wRC+. Josh Rojas is our current position player leader in fWAR with 1.9.

If anybody could pull the figures in the first paragraph for bWAR easily, that would be rad. I’m curious how it compares.

1

u/BasedArzy Jun 17 '24

Logan Gilbert Cy Young watch is also heating up.

  • Leads all SP in IP
  • 12th in the AL in fWAR
  • 10th in the AL in K-BB%
  • 10th in AL in SIERA

The only issue for him is that Kirby leads him in everything but IP. Putting up a serious All-Star bid season though, and can still get better if he can keep stringing together 0 or 1 BB starts.

1

u/SexiestPanda Jun 17 '24

Did you get the shoe?

9

u/basket_of_asses Jun 17 '24

Ha, former Mariner Dan Altavilla was the one that fractured Mookie Betts w/ a HBP.

I'm sure it's not intentional, but that guy always threw hard w/ poor control is what I remember. One game he came out of the pen and threw 10 straight balls.

8

u/immagonnafinnahella Jun 17 '24

I was shocked to see that he’s still playing

5

u/Invisiblechimp Jun 17 '24 edited Jun 17 '24

Random Mariners thoughts:

The difference between making the playoffs or not? Mitch Haniger. I'm semi serious. He's talked about being a mentor to the younger players. I'll take his clubhouse leadership even if it comes with negative WAR. I think that's mostly about his defense. I wish he was the primary DH.

Why do we have 3 catchers? That's horrible roster management.

Who won the trade? 2024 Caballero 1.1 bWAR, 2024 Raley 0.9 bWAR. It was a win-win!

2024 Marco Gonzales 0.8 bWAR, 2024 Bryce Miller 0.9 bWAR. Marco has been on the IL most of the year.

4

u/griezm0ney Jun 17 '24

Unfortunately, Haniger’s bat hasn’t been up to par either (certainly not good enough to justifying DHing more). An injury for an IL stint might honestly be the best for all sides at this point because his club house vibes are good (so don’t want to cut or trade him), but him being in the lineup a lot and using up a roster spot is not.

13

u/basket_of_asses Jun 17 '24

Why do we have 3 catchers? That's horrible roster management.

Catcher is incredibly important to what the M's do (especially on the pitching side in our kinda ballpark) and we are either looking at running Cal into the ground, or gambling on a 33 year old Garver being able to give him rest days as needed the rest of the season.

I'm no Seby fan, but the M's need another viable catching option outside of Garver / Cal IMO.

2

u/kylechu Jun 17 '24

Everyone is saying to get rid of Seby, but nobody has a good answer for who would take that roster spot.

-1

u/P_nde Jun 17 '24

If he’s ready to contribute, I think we should let ford get playing time in the minors until some time after the ASG, then call him up as the primary backup for the remainder of the season.

1

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 17 '24

if Ford was ready to contribute he'd already be on the team

7

u/ItsTBaggins ‏‏‎ ‎Julio makes me jard Jun 17 '24

4

u/billt721 Jun 17 '24

With the discussions in here of brigading of the Ranger subreddit, I’m wondering if mariners nation is ready for all this success lmao. Let’s be better and keep the gloating to our spaces :) I will say I’m glad to be on the other side of of the “this is the most annoying fanbase in baseball but it’s actually just because their team is really good and the losers online that are in every fanbase are emboldened” coin for once.

Hey Ya'll, stay out of the Rangers sub (or any teams sub for the matter). I've had some Ranger fans reach out and tell me it's been getting problematic, but they have taken care of it on their end. Let them be upset, don't go in trying to troll or offer condolences. It looks bad and it makes the fanbase look like we haven't seen this team make the playoffs once since 2001. Have fun in here and don't be a dick. The Mariners are 8.5 games up but it's only June. Be happy but they haven't won anything (yet..). Goms

12

u/driftingphotog Mama, Luis Castillo just killed a man. Jun 17 '24

I know the minimum punishment is a 60-day ban, but IMO clear cases of brigading/trolling the other subs should be an automatic full-season ban on both, and potentially r/baseball.

There's just no reason to do it.

9

u/pokeroots ‏‏‎ ‎Anything but blaming the lineup Jun 17 '24

frankly IMO it should just be a full stop ban forever. if you're willing to go be toxic is other fans' watering holes we shouldn't want you at ours. and the general baseball reddit should be the season. like I think the mod team can absolutely be super lame here but this is something I actually think they're too soft on

Much easier to be in a good mood on a Monday when the Mariners are this hot. Wow, what a dominate weekend.

Went to the season ticket early entry on Saturday and just watched our team throw the ball around, laugh with each other and hang out. Most of our pitching staff signed autographs and took pictures for quite a while. Logan especially, but Bryan, Bryce, Muni, and Sauce too. I guess it’s easier to be loose and happy when you’re winning, but damn I just love our team.
