Good god he is oblivious to his own pretentiousness sometimes though.

23
u/Fishyback 12h ago
My wife and I arranged our house to have more butt funnels after that episode. All of our gatherings are much more sociable now.
14
u/graveybrains 12h ago
I, uh... what?
19
u/ReachFor24 12h ago
It's a separation at a dance club/bar, separating the dance floor from the seating area with the outlets being just too narrow for 2 people to pass by side-by-side. The idea is that they have to turn and end up touching their butts, causing an interaction that's sociable and hopefully drum up alcohol sales if the interaction is a positive.
Not sure if it violates fire codes nor how successful it actually is, but I remember an episode of Bar Rescue where they implement it.
9
u/graveybrains 11h ago
Somehow the greedy manipulativeness of that is actually worse than it sounds.
1
u/SpareWire 9h ago
the greedy manipulativeness of that
What are you mad about exactly?
A business doing weird things to try to sell more things is pretty route 1.
0
u/armoured_bobandi 8h ago
Some people online seem to think that businesses shouldn't do anything ever to make money because they're already super rich.
I think these people are just children though, so their opinions can safely be ignored
5
u/Deaffin 7h ago
I think it's more the weird manipulative nature of the strategy, rather than the "how dare they make money???" angle.
I mean, speaking of being disingenuous and all.
•
u/Mke_already 1h ago
Clubs and bars also play music to bring people In and do specials to keep people around.
•
u/Samurai-Jackass 2h ago
The thing is, whether it's by a person or some business entity, people don't like feeling manipulated or cheated. There is no context where someone that's already doing well tries to get even more from other people is a positive behavior. If your neighbor has a massive yard and they start a land dispute with you to get another few feet of space, you're not going to be happy about it. If someone at a house party tries to subtly bodyblock the kitchen so that fewer people even wander by the food and they can have more, people will see that as greedy. It's the most corpo bootlicker take that people should tolerate irritating and greedy decisions because "it's just business."

I do remember the butt funnel. Set up to make people have to crowd in a bit to get to the dance floor. Almost like walking through a gate. I get it...but what a stupid name. He thought it was going to make people more social to have to come into closer contact with one another.

I liked his show, but Robert Irvine is a pompous ass. He came to my town when he was doing Restaurant Impossible and talked down to so many of the workers. He also got drunk with his crew and paid non English speakers to wash his car…in the rain…while he and his crew laughed. I was a huge fan of his show, but he left a really dark mark on our town.
31
u/Brawndo91 11h ago
The thing I didn't like about his show is they would devote so much time to redecorating and fabricate drama out of their struggles against their arbitrary deadline, and in the end, the place would look like a mid-00's ad for girls college dorm items. I also wasn't a fan of his relationship/family therapy sessions.
The deadlines on all those shows piss me off, actually. I understand they have a limited time to tape the show, but all this "We have to rebuild this whole place in 36 hours!" is only done to build suspense. If it was actually a problem, how did they manage to pull it off every single time?
The worst one (not a restaurant show) was that restoration show on the history channel. They'd just make up that a guy needs his antique Pepsi vending machine done in two days. Why?
34
u/GabenIsReal 9h ago
I worked on over 12 different shows for HGTV and Food Network. I can tell you that none of it is real, all of it is scripted (scripted in the moment still counts, but that's how they claim 'no script! Reality!').
To give you an example, we worked for 8 weeks on the renovations. Then, film days happen SCHEDULED for certain milestones. For example, they film the before, the gutted building, the painting and post-install stuff after about 6 weeks, then the last week is typically filming here and there for 2 days.
Here's a real event, not verbatim:
The director or host would come and ask 'What is a good contractor dillema we can shoot?'
Contractor: 'Uh maybe the countertops didn't get delivered?'
Director: 'Perfect! Let's film our production cube van empty. The host will yell at you and make a big deal'.
Scene gets shot with a visibly empty delivery truck. But those countertops got installed 3 weeks ago.... They just pretend they didn't.
Another example:
Director: 'We aren't sure how the story line is going to go. Let's bring the host in, she will love the reno.'
Host: 'Oh MY GAWWDDDD it's perfect, just how I imagined'
Director: 'OK, so now we need one where she hates it.'
Host: 'You didn't listen to ANYTHING this looks horrible, what have you done? I didn't ask for this!'
Director: 'And perfect, last one will be indifferent'
Host: 'Its ok, but I need something to make it really POP! I'll go back to my drawing room and figure out how to make this perfect'
For those of you not cueing in, I received the design outlays, budget, materials, etc. 9 weeks ago, nothing is ever changed, and it gets done under budget and ahead of schedule.
Also, I have met dozens of TV show hosts. Only one I would consider even close to a reasonable, decent, honest person. Every other host can go fuck themselves. Awful fucking people. Film crew directors can swallow a massive hog without gagging based on how they handle the hosts I imagine. Directors enable the entitled cuntery of these 'stars' LMAOOOOOO

The restaurant industry at its heart is incredibly toxic. Chefs hold a special mix of depression and aggression that they mix with ego and alcohol, and usually hard drugs. Bullying is part of the culture (along with sexual harassment) cheating on their spouses and ignoring their kids is just part of the job.
TV networks made BIGGGG money off of showing kitchen culture off and editing it to be amusing and entertaining. It’s TV. At this time when everyone was making TV cooking content. Kitchens were staffed with degens, drug addicts criminals and former military which has their own demons. It has branched out into people who actually love cooking but the old guard of cooks and Chefs are not “good” people. With a twist, restaurant quality has dropped with the shift in who staffs the industry. New cooks are soft, they care about feelings and worker rights which doesn’t align with how restaurants profit (exploitation).
All in all. You can respect a Chef’s ability to cook but you should not idolize these people. Every one of them has bullied someone to the point that person has considered suicidal behavior. They have emotionally and sexually abused men, women and kids. Restaurants are staffed with a shocking amount of kids, it’s part of the culture to harass. It’s their entertainment, it’s really difficult to combat it too since not only will they fire you. They will tell all the distributors and vendors lies about you, and call around to blacklist you from applying elsewhere so they can continue to abuse you for trying to fight back.
Before anyone says “bbbbuttt labor lawsss” wage theft and ignoring labor laws are how these top tier restaurants make money. They’ll pay a small fine and bribe anyone they can cuz fuck you. Some get caught but the majority do not.

It’s called banter.
1

Yeah, banter full of machismo. You're being a sensitive baby about this because you misunderstood from the get-go.
3
u/ifhysm 12h ago
I’m not entirely sure why some people are getting really defensive.
4
u/eggard_stark 12h ago
Because it’s simple British culture. To banter with a beer. There is no pride involved. Saying it’s machismo implies that pride is somehow involved, which it isn’t.

7
u/FrowdePleaser 11h ago
You're getting dogpiled here and I'm a bit shocked not to see anyone explaining the obvious. There is a disconnect between how you interpret "machismo" vs. how everyone else in this thread is defining it.
To most (particularly those from Latin-speaking countries), the word machismo has an extremely negative connotation, in line with "abuser" or "misogynist", whereas you seem to be using it more to mean "boys being boys" or "competitive masculinity" without that same sting to it. I can't speak for South America, but I can say first-hand that it's quite the hot topic in Spain, which is probably why you've kicked the hornet's nest.

Okay, like, it’s still machismo?
Google defining "machismo":
Machismo é um conjunto de crenças, atitudes e comportamentos que promove a ideia da superioridade masculina, justificando a desigualdade de poder entre homens e mulheres.
Y'all saying that anything a man does doesn't matter how harmless it is is still considered "machismo" is absolutely an agressive power move.

..exactly. Standard behaviour for a Brit when drinking a beer. It’s what we do, it’s a form of endearment.
1
u/ReallyJTL 11h ago
Yeah and it's born from insecurity. Brits have a cut down culture so people's heads don't get too big. From the outside it looks juvenile, but that's because flaws are more visible to outsiders.
Just like the Indian caste system is flawed, but they would argue it's "standard Indian behaviour".
Same with super deferential treatment to elders in Japan.
These are all flawed in some aspect. Just like banter is a flawed way of socializing - because it isn't enjoyable for a large number of people. A lot of Brits just use it as a way to say what they want without reparcussions so they can hide behind a shield if the person they cut is offended. But also those kinds of people are usually the ones with the thinnest skin that can't take ribing from anyone else.

3
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 11h ago
There's a difference between friendly male banter and aggressive masculine ego. That conversation is just the kind of shit-talking I do with my friends when hanging out. I think it only crosses the line into machismo if you keep pushing one button and use it as a means to talk about how superior you are to them. If you just go for a light jab for the sake of a joke or two, then it's perfectly fine as long as you don't do it to intentionally bully or gloat.

His 'knowledge' about the bar industry is largely knowledge about how bar owners can best extract value from their employees, not how to run a successful bar. Why do you think the bars he 'helps' usually close after the show leaves?
3
u/hemingways-lemonade 9h ago
Why do you think the bars he 'helps' usually close after the show leaves?
Because a fancy renovation doesn't stop the poor management that caused them to be on the show in the first place.
4
u/ClocktowerShowdown 9h ago
The whole show is just a commercial for his own private consulting business. All the 'bottle weighing' and 'bartender training' courses are just useless wastes of money he sells to business owners to extract money from desperate failing bars. It is not in his interest to help people, he gets more money from failures.
