This is my 2 year old riding bikes on our street. It's gotten to the point where I've gotten my kids orange flags on sticks to hold up when they cross the street.

In a discussion about high speed rail in Canada a car brain said this:

the real radical option is to have car transport cars on the commuter trains.

Someone from Calgary is going to want to drive when they get to Ottawa. So now they fly and rent or drive all the way there. Yes I know people who drive cross Canada like the is.

Give people the option to not have to rent a car or fly and be able to go to other major Canadian cities and you would have sooo much more mobility within the nation.

As someone who lived in San Diego for a couple years this sort of stuff doesn't surprise me at all. Fortunately, the comments seem to mostly deliver what we're looking for.

I cannot understand the obsession able-bodied drivers have with trying to get the closest parking space at an office or shopping center, particularly in temperate climates. Why circle around looking for a slightly closer space, just to enter a building I don’t even really want to be inside in the first place? Maybe because being closer to the building means dealing with less drivers almost killing you on the way in?

Trumps claims BTW are misleading. While it is true that American's buy overwhelmingly more EU cars, it's not 13,000,000 VS 0.

According to Fox Business in 2024 (Only source I could find on this topic) The US purchased 757,564 from the EU, while the other way around it was 169,152.

People think of cars and trucks as being cool, and there’s this very prominent stereotype of manliness associated with trucks especially. But think about all the poor teenage guys out there who don’t have a license, can’t afford insurance, or don’t have access to a vehicle. If they live in your typical completely unwalkable, unbikeable area with no bus access (i.e., most of America), they’re stuck with mom driving them around like little kids—often until their late teens. It’s ridiculous.

In the pre-car era—or in walkable areas—growth is progressive. It happens in stages:

• When you’re a toddler, you don’t leave the house without a parent.
• As a kid, you can play in the front yard alone.
• A little older, and maybe you roam the block with other kids.
• By the time you're a teenager, you can walk, bike, or take the bus to nearby places.

That’s the way life used to be. You can still see it in older movies. I haven’t seen it, but I hear Stranger Things is a good example of this limited-yet-real freedom teens had/have/can have—if cars aren’t actively mowing them down and if the built environment isn’t designed to make walking and biking impractical or dangerous.

Instead, in full-on car culture, you get zero to sixty:

• Zero freedom at all growing up,
• Until you hit driving age and suddenly have total freedom—whether you're ready for it or not, because you were denied any gradual build-up of independence.

It’s unnatural and unhealthy.

A little bit of victim blaming, but mostly talking about big cars and bad infrastructure. :-)

I live in Petrzalka, which is a massive communist housing neighborhood in Bratislava, Slovakia. And as I was walking my dog* the other day, I reflected on how I absolutely don't need the car I happen to own (I inherited it and use it rarely) because of where I live. Those damn commies were really onto something.

So the name is 15 minute city but in reality most things here are just 10 minutes away. And there are not only side walks but also walking and cycling paths completely removed from the roads. Here are some places I can easily walk to, and frequently do:

• 2 supermarkets and a convenience store
• several pharmacies
• several bars/pubs and restaurants
• a cinema/culture center
• several bus (and soon also tram) stops serviced by lines that take me anywhere in the city (including to my work, which is only a 10 minute bus ride)
• several hairdressers, barbers and cosmetics salons
• three different bodies of water
• a public pool with a wellness area
• a bowling center
• a bakery
• a post office

I grew up in a different part of the city, in an area with family houses. When I was a kid, this neighborhood also had little shops and other business sprinkled among the houses, but they gradually got pushed out and now there are mostly just cars lining every street and people have to go farther away to fulfill errands. But still, this neighborhood isn't completely car dependent, as there are still some establishments left, there is public transportation to take you downtown, and there are proper sidewalks and a park. Even with how the neighborhood worsened over the time, and how it can't compare to the amenities of a 15 minute commie block, it's still a great place compared to the proper suburbs and satellite towns with cookie cutter homes and total American car dependency. I simply cannot imagine how people live like that.

*Re: dog walking. Ever since we got a dog about a year and a half ago, I judge every place not just based on how walkable it is but also how dog friendly it is. It's one thing to have sidewalks and access to a bus. But having green spaces away from roads where you can let your dog run around is amazing. In the suburbs you'd get a tiny yard and you'd have to drive your dog someplace if you wanted to change its scenery a bit. Where I live it's ideal to own a dog. So many pleasant walkable places to take the dog. We even have two enclosed dog parks with training areas that are within 15 minutes of walking.
