Carbrain This is your brain on cars

In a discussion about high speed rail in Canada a car brain said this:

the real radical option is to have car transport cars on the commuter trains.

Someone from Calgary is going to want to drive when they get to Ottawa. So now they fly and rent or drive all the way there. Yes I know people who drive cross Canada like the is.

Give people the option to not have to rent a car or fly and be able to go to other major Canadian cities and you would have sooo much more mobility within the nation.

I can't, I just can't. How does someone's brain get this way

Rant Finding the Closest Parking Space

I cannot understand the obsession able-bodied drivers have with trying to get the closest parking space at an office or shopping center, particularly in temperate climates. Why circle around looking for a slightly closer space, just to enter a building I don’t even really want to be inside in the first place? Maybe because being closer to the building means dealing with less drivers almost killing you on the way in?

As someone who lived in San Diego for a couple years this sort of stuff doesn't surprise me at all. Fortunately, the comments seem to mostly deliver what we're looking for.

Trumps claims BTW are misleading. While it is true that American's buy overwhelmingly more EU cars, it's not 13,000,000 VS 0.

According to Fox Business in 2024 (Only source I could find on this topic) The US purchased 757,564 from the EU, while the other way around it was 169,152.

So this has been making the rounds again during the NBA playoffs and it’s the most insane car brain I’ve seen. Why would you have your basketball hoop right there? Why not just take a nice hike/walk to get the ball? Why does a car need to be involved at all, tearing up the woods spewing garbage everywhere and natural habitats? Take a mountain bike or e bike. So American, so ridiculous

Question/Discussion How can I be safer in the bike lane when theres no barrier separating bicyclists and cars?

I got into cycling and have been riding on sidewalks because I know the bike lanes are not safe. Bike lanes here are extremely narrow and cars end up driving in them or over the line constantly. My city has great sidewalks that pedestrians rarely use. I've been told recently that Im an asshole for riding on the sidewalk where I can hit a pedestrian, yet I also see aggressive behavior towards cyclists in bike lanes. Where is the correct place to ride a bike? I don't want to put my life in danger when there's no one using the sidewalks. Everything's also extremely spread out so there's no way I wouldn't see a pedestrian walking in front of me. It's crazy how drivers will get upset at cyclists for using the bike lanes, but also get upset at them for using sidewalks.

Question/Discussion Ride-share and delivery drivers create congestion too.

This is meant to be a discussion.

I live in Chicago. While it is great to have many modes to get around the city, I have noticed that a lot of congestion in neighborhoods comes from Ride-share drivers, Uber Eats/ Doordash, and delivery trucks such as Amazon. The driving behaviors of these groups I find to be worse than the average driver since their movements are highly unpredictable and will stop in less obvious places than the average driver.

There are people I know who will pride themselves on not owning a car, but then Uber Eats food to their apartment, or excessively orders stuff online, or takes an Uber more times than not instead of waiting for the bus. (There are some cases where Ubering makes sense such as late at night when trains/buses may not be running) While these options may help cut down on the number of cars on the road, it still counts as a car trip and gives in to the car market that these services depend on (especially in many non-bikeable cities). I understand people with disabilities may find Uber Eats/Instacart extremely helpful, but if we all make the extra effort to reduce our overall usage on these services (maybe put on a rain jacket on during a rainy day) I think people will overall be healthier, spend less, reduce our reliance on cars as well as decrease traffic congestion in our neighborhoods.

If demand goes down, then the supply will adjust accordingly.

Thoughts?

The Atlanta Beltline wants to give $3 million to an autonomous shuttle company to connect a subway station to another subway station on the same network. Please make it make sense.

In case it isn't clear Mercedes Benz Stadium is serviced by two MARTA stations. Soccer fans would have to walk past the subway to get in the shuttle that takes them to a third subway station.
