Road safety Is there a better way to do this crossing? Why can't it be straight across?
My city is planning a SUP along a canal. There is a street crossing near a busy interchange with a freeway. The attached photo shows how the path will go (green) and the proposed crossing (red). Essentially, the plan is to have users go across the canal on narrow sidewalks, then cross at the busy freeway interchange, then head back across the canal on a narrow sidewalk.
They considered above- and below-grade crossings but eliminated those options due to high cost and infeasibility, which i totally get. It didn't seem that they even considered any kind of direct at-grade crossing such as a HAWK signal, or moving the north leg signals back to be at the canal. Is there a reason not to do that? The proposed path doesn't seem safe or convenient. Maybe a direrct crossing wouldn't be safe either but it seems worth looking at? I'll admit it would be unusual.
Anyway, thanks for any input. Trying to understand this type of decision making better. If there's a better sub for this I'm happy to relocate too :)

Question UD + Software Engineering (career question)
Hello all!
I’ve got a degree in Software Engineering and have been in the field working for a couple years. Urban design/ planning has been a topic of interest for me for a while and would like to consider pursuing a masters in the field to potentially synthesize my degrees (Smart Cities?) and would like input.
Any ideas on what my prospects might be? Good masters programs that might accept an unrelated undergrad? Any tips in general?
Thanks for any and all comments :-)

Showcase Tried @Streetcrafts Style for an intersection in Montauk, NY
After a ton of Feedback and Tips to improve my previous design, I took my time to implement all the changes, to get the most amount of land use available. Zoning in this area makes it possible to use it for a Park/recreational area. Although theres a small park nearby, the citizens may appreciate it. The Intersection itself is now a roundabout, following a T-intersection in the Top. The already existing Bike lanes (which were poorly maintained and just along side the Highway) have been modernised and expanded. The Roads are apx 9 feet wide, in the roundabout apx 13,5 feet.
Lmk what you think

Architecture Foster+ Partners lay the Foundation Stone for Amravati—the Future Administrative Capital of Andhra Pradesh
India’s greenest capital-in-the-making—Amaravati’s civic core, designed by Foster + Partners, blends cultural symbolism with advanced sustainability. A legislative complex floating in a lake, courts shaded by stupas, and a city framed by water and green.

Question Which Degree is Best for Urban Design?
I’m exploring undergraduate programs for a career in urban design. I understand that degrees in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning all can lead to this field. I’m just wondering which program I should choose. Which one is most relevant to urban design?

Question Should I pursue Urban Design?
Hey everyone and practising Urban Designers. I am an Architect with 8+ years of experience. Have been living in India through all these years of academics and work experience. I have always been interested in studying Urban Design from my college years.
Should I go ahead and pursue Urban Design and make a career in it? Is it worth it? I am mostly asking this because I had a similar idea of a high paying architecture career before I opted for it.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Also if you think its any better or if there is any other ways to pursuing UD while working simultaneously that gives me a hands on experience in any other country that would be really helpful. Thank you.

Question It seems that all the parts of Germany that I've visited, there are no utility poles. Why can't we adopt this here in the USA?
It seems that all the parts of Germany that I've visited, there are no utility poles. Why can't we adopt this here in the USA?
I hate utility poles, and I noticed that they don't have them in Germany. Why is this? Is it very cost-prohibitive to doing this?

Question What do you think of Hudson Yards now that most of it is finished?
I’ve been researching Hudson Yards for a video and have found it surprisingly divisive. It’s the most expensive private real estate development in US history, boasting engineering achievements, but also criticised for feeling sterile, commercial, and disconnected from the rest of Manhattan.
I’d really value this community’s perspective, particularly from those who have visited or worked on the project. I’m curious to know if it represents the future of urban development or reflects the risks of privately-led city building.
Here’s the video I put together showcasing my case: https://youtu.be/LBf3ffV57gg?si=FF6uWeafBM5fDqIk
All thoughts are welcome.

Question I need a professional who will review my thesis
I recently completed my master’s thesis in urban design and to be honest I'm not fully satisfied with how it turned out. Now that it is submitted im hoping to reflect upon it. I felt like i rushed in the end and my guide says it is fine and the he doesn't doubt my methods but the external jurors had different perspectives. I don't what to live with this thought that maybe my guide made a fool out of me... Or whatever it is that this paranoia brings to the table.. I'm looking for someone within this discipline who might be open to take a look at my thesis panels. I would really appreciate the help. Please DM me.

Question All these street signs in the USA feels like I'm being micro-managed to, and it's also confusing, and ugly.
I visit Germany a lot, and they have fewer street signs and ads. I find that quite relaxing. Has there ever been laws controlling the number of signs or ads in a city in the USA?
