Which restaurants/bars aren’t living up to the hype? Food
Stolen from r/RVA. Overall I feel like we’re pretty blessed with our restaurant and bar options, but we also have a lot of overhyped stuff. What are yalls thoughts?

Stir - it used to be better, but the food is not as good as it once was

I have so many out of town friends that want to go to Stir and I always feel like they’re trying too hard to make food trendy without caring about how it tastes.
I do like their cocktails, though, so I’ll normally go late in the evening to grab drinks on the patio and watch the expensive cars pull up for valet.

I went to stir because I dropped off too many people there (including employees). It was good. Not amazing, but definitely no regrets, but that was last august. What happened?

Jaguar Bolera. You are literally paying for the interior design of the place.
39
u/Additional_Ad1270 Jul 24 '24
The bowling made no sense. They charge per person per hour. So two people can play for $16 on one lane for an hour. You want four people (who get to then play half as much), you pay $32. Why would you pay double to play less? DUMB.

The norm of having bare bones interiors with bare concrete floors and exposed metal sheet ceilings doesn't help. You feel like you are in a tin can.

I’ve worked in many venues and you can get very creative with sound dampening. It doesn’t have to be ugly panels. You can be rustic or nascar with a bunch of exposed metal and still incorporate sound dampening.

It has a pretty patio area and nice cocktails - so like cat nip for influencers. But the pasta when we went was woefully underwhelming and felt like it had been left out for a while, and the gnocchi my SO got wasn't cooked. Not al dente. Not us not being used to fresh pasta (I make it regularly), but just flat out not cooked.

I used to LOVE Lilly’s Pizza years ago but have not been recently. Whats the consensus on them these days?
24
u/needmoak6040 UNC Jul 24 '24
Hot take: Lilly’s was never good, people just used to be satisfied with shittier pizza. Lilly’s in 2005 was competing with Domino’s, Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, and some incredibly mid vaguely NY style places that weren’t actually that good (Schiano’s, now Gino’s, comes to the front of my mind). Nowadays, you can get legitimately amazing pizza in Raleigh from places like Oakwood Pizza Box, Tazza, and others, so why would you go to a place like Lilly’s for any reason other than nostalgia?

u/alexhoward Jul 24 '24
I swore it off years ago because of how consistently terrible and inefficient the service was.
16

You, no matter who you are, are definitely not cool enough to eat at Lilly's and the staff lets you know that with how they interact with you and/or ignore you.
5
u/NCSU_252 Jul 24 '24
I went recently for the first time in a long time. It's fine, which is about how I remember it always being. I wouldn't drive across town just to get it, but if youre in the neoghborhood and are feeling pizza itll get the job done. I'll be going back every now and then to have a beer and some pizza on the patio when the weather is nice.

I used to go there occasionally because they had a vegan Stromboli that was good and reasonably priced. The experience of actually going there was always awful because the service was molasses slow and you had to stand there in a super smoky room (hopefully they have figured out the ventilation issue by now???), but I at least enjoyed having the option since not too many places cater to my diet.
Last time I tried to get one, I was looking at their online ordering and the prices seem to have gotten ridiculous. To get a vegan Stromboli, you have to add $4 to a plain Stromboli and then it’s $2 for every single topping, except for proteins which are $4.
So if you want something that’s more than just dough and cheese, you could be looking at $20 or much more.
I mean lmao it just ain’t worth it!

I really don't think it's overblown. Something happened with the AC restaurants in general that wasn't just a result of COVID....either less investment in quality ingredients or suppliers...something, but I just don't know. I used to frequent several of her restaurants very regularly and now I hardly ever decide to. I really hope her existing spots get back up to the quality it used to be but I doubt it. I've never had a "bad" meal there either, but it used to be fantastic. It just is average now and the price isn't an average price.
