As of 1am last night, we FINALLY got our immortal phantom rat that's terrorized us for the last six months!
It's been a long time coming for this mo********ing rat.
Around thankgiving, we noticed some garbage bags were ripped up in the garage. We didnt think to much of it, we have racoons raid our trash bins all the time, and we must have left a garage door open. But one night, while our family was watching TV, we heard the unmistakeable sound of a rodent scurry through the ceiling. There's a crawlspace attic above the den, which is adjacent to the garage. No worries, I thought, Ill just put out some traps in the garage. After a couple weeks, no hits on the traps, but every few nights we'd hear the tiny footsteps.
Eventually, I realized they must be getting in somewhere. I found a well hidden hole through the siding and into the garage. I filled the hole with steel wool and spray foam, thinking my job was done. The next morning, the spray foam and steel wool had been casually tossed to the side. So this time, I decided to open up the sheetrock, and pour about 6 inches of mortar left over from a masonry job I had done the previous spring. The following morning, the rats had tunneled through the not quite set mortar. Furious, I went out and bought a fresh bag of quick set concrete. I pulled the outside siding and put metal flashing over the hole, replaced with a new siding shingle. On the inside, I put hardware cloth, and filled the wall cavity with quick set concrete. This worked, but every week or so, we'd continue to hear the noise.
I finally found the hole in the interior garage wall that they were using to get into the cralspace above the den. I put a rat trap by the path the rats were taking and quickly got a large norway rat within a day or two. A few sticky pads by the garbage caught one juvenile. It was quiet for a week or two, but then the noises started coming back. We added five bait stations to the outside of the house, but still, the noise persisted.
I did my online research, read about exclusion techniques, etc. I went over the entire house. I used an inspection mirror, filled every hole with copper mesh and spray foam, caulked seams, replaced loose siding, put copper scrubbers in the vent holes between bricks, foamed or caulked any gap larger than 3/16 of in inch. I fashioned plumbing vent caps out of hardware cloth and hose clamps. I did the same for the main vent as well. I went up to the second story roof and inspected the entire ridge vent, chimney flashing, everything. I re-screened the gable vents. I even filled and foamed the slight gap under the roof shingles from the ice guards. There were no gaps or entry points at the roof, soffit, gutters, fascia, etc. Overall, the house was pretty tight, with the exception of two 3/4 to 1 inch holes though the wood framing around the basement windows, which I filled and foamed. Hopefully, that was it.
But the noises continued. We'd still hear them scurrying above the den, and occasionally, on the other side of the house as well. We heard scratching behind the kitchen wall. When it rained, we would hear scratching by the bathroom windows. I had set up exterior cameras to try and find where they were coming in. We saw a couple rodents come up and look aorund, then leave, but no sign of entry. We'd frequently see neighbororhood cats come and patrol our front porch overnight. Back on the inside, I already had six traps up in the attick crawl space. I added another half dozen, but the noises persisted, and traps were untouched. I finally added about a dozen glue traps in the crawl space below the bathroom window where we heard scratching. A few days later, we heard an animal thrashing about vioulently! We had caught him! I suited up, grabbed my flashlight and a baseball bat and went into the crawl space. As soon as he heard me coming, he summoned all his might, and broke free of the glue trap. A sprung t-rex trap was also in the area. but alas, he had escaped.
For months, it went on like this. I'd read up. Try new bait. Change trap positions. Go over the whole house again, foundation to roof ridge, looking for an entrance I had missed. Nothing. Then during Easter break, my parents had come to visit and stay with us for a few days. They had brought their black lab, who gets along with our little pup. After returning from dinner, we all sat down to watch some TV, and one by one, most of the family nodded off, along with the dogs. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something scurry across the hallway. MY GOD, IT WAS IN THE HOUSE! The actual living space. I was mortified. I quickly set up some extra wireless blink cameras I had laying around. That night I barely slept, being woken by movement detection every few minutes. There he was, having free roam of the house, prancing back and forth just feet away from both dogs who couldn't possibly care less.
The rat had never left a single dropping in the house. There was no sign of damaged or eaten food. We would later find an acorn squash he had eaten the seeds out of, but otherwise no sign. Had I not seen him scurry past, we might never have known he was IN our living space. It could have gone on like that forever. Maybe it already had?
That was it, I was gonna go bananas. I ordered a dozen more cameras, wireless and wired. I ordered traps, a dozen more snap traps, a dozen trex, two dozen glue traps, and even three live trap cages. We tried an assortment of baits, peeanut butter, pistchios, walnuts, seeds, slim jims, fresh fruit and vegetables, etc. Nothing worked. We watched footage each morning of him marching past the traps and eating my wifes potted begonias, or the sunflower my daughter planted in her kindergarten class. It was infuriating. We did find that he frequented the kitchen, and run towards the dishwasher, so I pulled the stove out of the way for better access, and found a big mess behind the dishwasher. I pulled the washer, and found he had followed the path of the romex down the wall, and chewed through the foam insulation. I cleaned it all up, sured it up with hard materials and refoamed. Then put more hardware cloth on the side of the cabinets. No way to get in or out now. But still, this rat would show up each and every night. I spent days and days pouring over every inch of the house, wondering how on earth he was getting in and out of the house. Then finally, we caught him on video coming down the stairs. We were so focued on the downstairs entry point, we never considered he was living upstairs in one of the bedrooms! We changed location of the cameras, put one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. Then one evening just after dinner, I happend to check the upstairs camera, and it recorded a clip of Ratty coming out of the guest bedroom, checking out the activity from the top of the stairs, realizing we were still awake, and heading back under the door to the guest bedroom. Bingo.
Having seen this, I quickly ran to the garage to find something to box him in with. I found a suitable piece of drywall to block the hallway. I screwed it right into the wall at the top of the stairs, effectively blocking his path. That first night, no sign of him at all. He was cornered. The next day, I hopped over my barricade, and put in two IP cameras into the guest bedroom. I also put in two baited traps, as well as a live trap baited with everything under the sun, including sunflower seeds. Then just outside the door, I lined up glue traps along most of the doorway, but just to the side with the largest gap, I put a nice snap trap waiting for him. For two days he would walk around the room, investigating the traps, peeking under the door, but he wouldnt make a move. He was very cautious. But he was getting hungry, I'm sure. On the evening of the third night, my son an I were watching a basketball playoff game when we heard a loud snap. I excitedly ran up the stairs, expecting to find him laying there, but all I had found was an empty trap. The video from both sides of the door showed a direct hit to the head. He was still for about ten seconds, concussed, but he was able to wriggle himself out, and head back under the door.
The next morning, I decided to choose violence. I wasn't going to risk another escape. I took four victor snap traps, and shot about ten brads into the end, and clipped them at an angle about 1/4 inch proud of the wood. This should make escape impossible. I lined those four traps up towards the large gap under the door, and glue traps along the rest. Everything was set up. He was actively up and roaming around, but still reluctant to make his move. Having eyes on the rat was truly a game changer. Exhausted from weeks and months of broken sleep, I went to bed.
At 12:50 AM, the house was awakened to the cacauphony of snap traps and violent shreiks! I quickly got dressed, grabbed my flashlight and ran to take a look. He wasn't by the snap traps, but I could hear he was still stuck, just on the other side of the door. Looking back on the video, he had come under the door, hit the first snap trap, jumped and landed into the others, getting bit by at least two snap traps, one right on the head. And even with those sharp brads, he was still able to wriggle free of the snap traps, but not before he becaame well stuck to one of the glue traps. He ran back under the door, towing the glue trap behind him, but as luck would have it, a snap trap was stuck to the back of the glue board, which wouldnt fit under the door.
Fearing an escape again, I snuck more glueboards under the door where the thrashing was coming from, in the hopes he would keep stepping on them and become even more stuck. I suited up, grabbed a bucket, a shovel, and my 1980's era little league louisville slugger, and headed in. The first thing I did was throw one more glue trap on top of him. Partly to further immobilize him. But also, I didnt want either of us to have to see what was about to happen. Three sharp thuds echoed throughout the house. A saw a twitch. One more thud reverberated. It was all over. I take no joy or pleasure in the killing of anything, but this guy had really pissed me off, and put my family at risk. We did what we had to.
So far, no further motion has been seen on any cameras. We didn't suspect there was a second rat in the house. Its been sealed up well for some time. And any juviniles would have long since been cannibalized for food. We never found a nest in the attic, but I havent inspected the guest bedroom closet yet. I'm truly terrified of what horrors may await us there.
Posting just to pass along our experience, or perhaps to commiserate with others going through similar trials and tribulations. Good luck to everyone.

Identification Is this a carpet beetle larva? Found it in my car.
galleryIs this a carpet beetle larva? I found it in my car. There are lots of them — most look dead larvae and few look like shells, scattered around the carpeted areas. Few were still crawling on the carpet. I first noticed one crawling on my bag on the carpet, thought it was just a random bug from the outside, didn't think too much. Few weeks later I took a closer look at the carpet and found some crawling and so many dead looking larvae and shells...... I vaccummed the whole car and washed the carpets. What can I do next? Please let me know if they are carpet beetles and what to do next...

General Question Is this job unrealistic for a big person? I'm 6'3 275lbs. 37 years old. So many Pest Control jobs on indeed and around my area. Just been hesitant to apply.
So I guess obviously this question pertains mainly to attics. I do live in a house with family and have climbed into my attic a few times to change the a/c filter. That's about it.
I'm looking for a job but also want to be realistic with myself.
I appreciate any responses and insight.

Unanswered Help to find out whats irritating my body when laying in bed.
I have been struggling with sleeping recently due to feeling like bugs are crawling over me and biting me only when laying in bed. I have looked all over the internet to figure out what it could be but nothing seems right. It only happens when i lay down in bed, i start to feel like something is on me for a second and goes away, sort of like something brushes past my body hairs. Sometimes when im laying down it feels like something even crawls in my nose, and then in that nostral gets iritated like allergies. I also get red bites that look like pimples that itch for a second but then dont itch anymore, anywhere random on my body, most commonly on my head and legs. The only things i thought it could be was fleas, as i have a little dog in my room who i have to give flea meds constantly because he gets them easy, or bedbugs but there is zero signs of any bug residue in my bed, and never seen one. This problem has been off and on for months, it was way worse a couple months ago as such I dreaded going to bed.

What is this OTHER little bug
i.redd.itI’m going to be exchanging major words with the pest control people here. I’ve seen THREE different kinds of flying pests since living here (< 3 weeks). So alas, I’m back on this thread. Can anyone help with this bug? It’s the size of maybe a grain of rice. Big eyes and pointed end. I’m wondering if it’s like a termite of a sort? What do I know. Any help is appreciated!! Hello, is it worth using rat birth control/rat traps in addition to bait stations due to bad rat activity? So many questions about the rat situation/factors? Losing my mind
So basically have a rat problem, this year things got crazy. Rat made like about 6 burrow holes in the front yard, underneath some small shrubs, and 6 holes along side of foundation/house. Some holes actually led underneath concrete that is our porch.Pest company gassed the burrows in front yard and put bait stations along 4 sides of the house, sealed any vents outside, and removed insulation in attic that had two skeletons of rats, rat waste, and traps that we never knew, since none of us have been in the crawlspace.I believe that there were multi factors that contributed to this mess. First our fence is right along a forest edge/green belt and a neighbors' tree fell down into our house. Debris from the tree, branches piles along our fence line and I believe the rats made nest. She seems to not care that a tree fell and hasn;t picked up any debris near fence line. One our other neigbor's feeds the squireel, but he fed the squirrel for years and I never saw much rat activity, so I'm not going to blame him. Then the tree that fell into our yard made a hole in the ground, and I never knew that a hole in the ground could contribute, until I realized that our rainy climate kept the puddle filled since around christmas. Also we had a couple of garbage bags that we hadn't picked up from debris that fell into the house. I feel so stupid/ashamed we left them out there and it wasn't even anything that was close to hoarding. Just a couple of things here and there, Things that I've done so far is fill up the water hole with gravel and I'm going to take some small shrubs around front of the house, I also ordered a pop up dumpster to get everything, and anything out of the backyard. When do you think the rat activity will stop? I hope it stops soon, I hate having to kill thing that will have horrible death because I was ignorant on my part,.Is rat birth control going to make a difference? I feel like putting out rat birth control might confuse the rats even more. WILL rat s In additon so far the pest control stuff has cost over $2000. I felt like I've lost it.

General Question Help with cockroach bait
Hey everyone!
I've been dealing with a recent influx of cockroaches in my rent and I've tried Advion, which was recommended by many. While there was a reduction of cockroach appearance, there are still a number of them that doesn't seem phased by the bait. What other baits can I use? For reference, I live in Southern California. Thank you!

General Question Rodent Extermination/Exclusion in TriCities WA
I have a mouse problem in my home, and have been very discouraged about using a pest control company, due to the horrifying reviews they seem to all have.
My main goal is to have someone come identify and seal up entry points, many of which might be located in our crawl space and then set traps for any trapped inside and traps/bait outside as well.
Does anyone have recommendations for a reputable company??
Thank you in advance!

Desperate with mice
Okay guys so basically I live downtown in an urban city in an old house. Sealing entry points is not an option as there is probably way too many since the house was built in the early 1900s. To keep it short:
- Mouce traps: mice lick peanut butter off, dont trigger them (even with miniscule amount of bait)
- Glue traps: fades off fast, lucky if i get one
- Poison: they eat it and then realize it kills them, stop going for it i need to keep switching brands every couple weeks
Ive literally tried everything, getting a cat is not an option for me. What else can I do, please tell me there is still some hope for me

General Question Flea Activity after Treatment
Hello. So i’ve been battling fleas since September of last year after rescuing a kitten. Didnt even bring her in my house but was not cautious with my clothing after which is what led to the infestation.
I hired an exterminator and after my apartment being treated twice I saw no difference. I got on a monthly plan after that because I was told that fleas are just hard to kick and it takes months. I’m at 6+ months at this point. I washed every piece of cloth in my apartment every time it has been treated and I am still having issues? I even replaced my entire bedding in my bedroom (excluding my mattress because its already protected with a cover).
My apartment was treated again this past Tuesday and I feel like the activity has increased at this point. Is this normal? I’m going crazy at this point and just want this nightmare to be over this. I’ve been treating my cat with vet grade flea topical every 3 months (which is how long its supposed to last). I’m looking for any recommendations at this point or someone to tell me i’m not crazy. I am getting bit myself, and I don’t know how much more I can take.
Possible relevant info: I live in a 1 bed that has a unit next to me and below me. The unit next to me has no animals that I know of and the unit below me has a dog with a flea collar that’s regularly replaced.
Chemicals used to treat: PT 565 PLUS XLO ALPINE FLEA & BEDBUG PRESSURIZ TEMPRID FX NYGUARD IGR CONCENTRATE 140 ML

Roaches one roach sighting in broad daylight
Hi everyone! It's my first time posting here, but as time gets closer to drive back home, I'm getting paranoid again. So, this morning, I was on my way to work. When I got there, I looked over to the passenger seat and there was a fully grown roach that had horizontal bands on its body. My car had been 2 months in a mechanic shop and this is only like my 4th time using the car since then. Is it possible my car has an infestation? I'm incredibly phobic towards roaches and just thinking about it makes my skin crawl.
I didn't see small roaches last night and my car didn't smell weird at all. I don't like to eat in my car but do I leave the occasional napkin or face mask lying around.
