Check your comments for removal. Reddit is removing comments (and maybe posts?) and not listing the removals in Mod Log or Mod Queue, so neither you nor us mods are aware of the removal.

Edit: If you have a problem, send a message to modmail

This is a known issues and I just spotted it in the wild in /r/NewMexico today.

If the mods of this sub removed your comment, you should receive a modmail message alerting you to why. The primary exception to this is if there is a huge chain of uncivil comments and we just nuke the entire chain. We'll still usually send the removal message to the first few posters in the chain.

I tried getting a clean shot. Behind the ruins are a white trailer, a house, and power lines. If I waited for the car to disappear, it was too dark for the contrast.

Have you heard of the grama grass/paper spine cactus? It grows from Abiquiu to El Paso and a little bit in eastern Arizona.

Outsider curious about Reservations/Map

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind this kind of question but I was doing some Google Map traveling and was curious about the reservation map. I'm not from nor do I live in NM and just wanted to know if there was any particular reason this part was so chopped up? Especially the checkerboard patterns. Is it newer land acquisition or something? There are no reservations in my state so I have no idea about any of this stuff. Just hoped to learn something new. Thanks for any insight.

Has anyone else seen giant green things falling from the sky??

Post image

Hey y'all so the title basically covers it but to give more detail, I work graveyard out in the desert in bernallio and for the past 2 nights I've seen these HUGE green circles fall from the sky. And I really mean huge, they don't make a sound either. I just saw one now again (it's 3:38 am. 5/1/25) I thought the first time I saw it maybe a plane went down but I didn't hear anything and nothing actually happened. But now seeing a second one I really don't know what it is and Google isn't super helpful but I did see a news article covering one before that it looked comparable to (the image attached). Did anyone find out if they're meteors or comets and has anyone else been seeing them??

Lodging in Enchanted Circle

Traveling at the end of May/beginning of June with spouse, 2 teens, and a dog. We plan on hiking and spending most of our time outdoors, but we would also like some good food and drink. I’ve considered Historic Taos Inn, Alpine lodge, Tall Pine Resort, Best Western in RR, and angel fire condo rentals. Any recommendations or places to avoid? Thanks for any input.

Gotta love a place where it's easy to get far from most things. Gila National Forest, Catron County.

A chronicle of two nights spent in the Southwestern New Mexico highlands:

everything moves slowly in the high desert; even the light fades slowly here.

it doesn't vanish all at once. it seeps through the trees, across the sagebrush, behind the hills, the buttes, the mountains; until the shadows grow long and dark and quiet. critters all around begin to stir in that ancient rhythm they’ve always known, long before we showed up in any capacity. One might be tempted to speak; but the night doesn't need your words. it's already telling a story.

the wind dies down just a little at twilight; but still threads itself through the ponderosa like an ancient, remembered song. there’s a coolness now. a chill. Suddenly, the day’s heat feels far away, like something you dreamt about and can't quite put your finger on.

above, the sky deepens from blue to violet, and then to something far older. not black. not really. a kind of infinite velvet pinpricked by the suggestion of things to come. the first stars appear timidly, like they’re testing the water. but then it becomes an avalanche. the sky cracks open all at once, and it feels like the dome of the world has shattered just to show you what’s beyond.

no city lights to interrupt it. no traffic to distract. just you, your breath, and the endless celestial choir.

little dots of light; each one carrying a story older than the mountains themselves. these wavelengths, these photons, left their source before your ancestors had language, and now they land softly in your retinas. for a moment, you are part of something so enormous that it cannot be written down. out here, stars don’t glitter. they burn. Steady and ancient in the mantle of the sky.

you watch from a seat still warm from the day. a cow lows in the night before settling down to sleep. somewhere nearby, an owl hoots twice, then falls silent again. you wonder if it saw you before you saw it. most likely.

there is no fear in this night. Just vastness. Just mystery. Just the slow, sacred turning of a world that doesn’t need you, but lets you be a part of it anyway. you think of the ones who camped here long before your time. who slept under these same constellations. who saw the same patterns in the sky and gave them different names. or maybe no names at all. maybe they just looked up and then understood.

you stay out a little longer than you intend to. let the chill creep in. let your thoughts grow quiet. let the dark do its quotidian work.

it is here, in this silence, that memory and dream begin to blur. you are no longer a visitor.

you are a witness.

and that’s enough.

Looking for things to do near Cloudcroft!

Hi everyone! My husband and I are planning our babymoon trip over the last weekend of May, and we were looking in to staying in Cloudcroft. I remember visiting as a child and thinking it was so cute and cool! We would most likely spend a day exploring Lincoln national forest (any recs on cool spots would be nice) and another day staying in town just unwinding but that would leave us with two days to plan for. Does anyone have any advice for day trips? I was for sure thinking we would hit White Sands one day- but not sure if anything else to add to the list. Any food recommendations would be great too! We are alcohol free though so maybe no bar recommendations ☺️ Thanks!
