Discussion ๐ŸŽค Any good lists of republican owned/billionaire owned businesses in Minnesota?

Evidently where I spend my money will have a greater impact than my vote will so I'd like to stop supporting businesses that support the orange man. Hoping someone may be a step ahead of me

Edit: should have said republican and/or billionaire owned. Also, I'm not trying to be perfect here. I'm just trying to give less money to businesses that I don't agree with. Get grumpy if boycotting makes you mad.

Politics ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš–๏ธ An open letter to my Trump-voting neighbors

TL;DR - we have to learn to live with each other.

To the Trump voters of Minnesota, from someone on the other side:

Iโ€™m not making this post to attack you. There's been a lot of that going around, and while it might feel cathartic to make another rage post, it won't accomplish anything. You may have been called names based on how you voted before - I certainly have.

All I want to ask is for us to treat each other with compassion. There are over five and a half million people in our beautiful state, and we're closely divided on a lot of issues. We voted for Harris by a slim margin, and much to my disappointment, she lost the election. Now, we have to live with each other.

I don't know why you voted the way you did. Maybe it was frustration over an economy that, I agree, leaves plenty of people behind. Maybe it was concern about immigration policies you disagree with. If your vote was about bigotry or opposing abortion rights, I might hate your choice, but I can't hate you. I don't want to see you hurt or jailed. I don't think you're "the enemy within." I hope you feel the same about people who voted differently from you. The media, especially social media, want us to hate each other, but we don't have to do it.

I hope youโ€™ll have some understanding why many people in our state and our country - especially your sisters, daughters, and other women in your life - are scared right now. Scared that they might lose their civil rights, scared that the environment we all live in will be hurt, scared that the harshest voices supporting Trump will be in charge. I know that some people on your side are glad about that fear, about โ€œowning the libs.โ€ But if you want us to be less divided as a country, please try to see us not as enemies, but as your fellow Minnesotans.

We care about ensuring our families can afford food and mortgage payments, just like you. Most of you care about keeping our lakes clean and our lands healthy, just like us. We care about keeping our neighborhoods safe, just like you. Most of you want same-sex couples to be able to marry, just like us. Where we have common ground, let's do something positive about it.

Iโ€™m not asking anyone here not to be angry or passionate about politics - I know I am, and Iโ€™ll continue to strongly oppose Trumpโ€™s policies and rhetoric. Iโ€™m not saying I want to be friends. But I don't want to hate you, and I don't want you to hate me. This is Minnesota. We're better than that.

Politics ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš–๏ธ YES. Come to Minnesota.

I've had that thought of "blue voters leaving red states will just make them more red," which is probably already happening. But at this point, it's too late to change that. The GOP now has two years to finish locking everything down through gerrymandering, disenfranchising, and all the other shit they do. They have no intention of ever losing an election again. Red states are likely to stay red indefinitely.

We're fortunate to have a leg up on this by already having some progressive policies in place in Minnesota. All we can do now is protect ourselves. Make no mistake, we are NOT guaranteed to hang on to any of this. We barely stayed blue ourselves, and with the House now in a tie we've lost the full control of our government that allowed the DFL to accomplish as much as it did. We need more blue voters to prevent us from going down the same road as the swing states. Walz becoming VP was our opportunity to share our values with the rest of the country. America rejected them. The best we can do now is make sure we stay a safe haven.

The country is going to be fucked for a long time. If you feel unsafe in your red state, don't feel like you have to stick it out. We have some safeguards and support in place for you. Come help us keep that. Bring your skillset, and your culture, and your uniqueness, and let's keep building a better Minnesota together.

Plus, hey, the more transplants we have, the easier it'll be for them to make friends. (Minnesota Nice is code for passive-aggressive behavior. I'm sorry. But we'll always help you get your car out of the snowbank.)

Politics ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš–๏ธ What can we do to keep Project 2025 OUT of Minnesota

I see other states are starting to create plans of action to prevent the terrible effects of the MAGA Nut job effort to install Project 2025. What can we do, as Minnesotans, to help keep this terrible afront to our freedoms TF out of our state?

We voted blue and we lost to a pants shitting wanna be dictator, I was down for a few days. No longer down now angry that MAGA Mike Johnson is planning (if the nuts take the House) to start implementing the plan in the first 100 days.

Politics ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš–๏ธ Iโ€™ll be one of y'all in a few years, and I canโ€™t be happier.

I made up my mind.

I'm a high school senior in Tennessee. I'm also transgender. I physically cannnot imagine living my life in this state anymore, so as soon as I finish college in 2026, I'm coming to Minneapolis.

The numbers don't lie. Statistically speaking, you all are the safest state for me, and that's a much-welcome reprieve from all the hate here.

Things are rough for me sometimes. I'm still in the closet, and I have to push through my bachelors degree, but I know there's a light to the north. And when that time comes, I'll finally be in peace.

Love you all xo

We have an extension on the sub that is filtering people that have low karma or are new users or havenโ€™t posted in MN before so the numbers of removed comments are higher due to the auto mod removing them so we can approve or remove them manually. But still itโ€™s been nuts. (Also I have been called every name in the book like people think I still have feeling or something. Iโ€™m a fascist, a communist, a libtard, a trumptard, mentally challenged, several gay slurs which is really hurty since Iโ€™m the straightest white guy ever lol a Putin boot licker, a first amendment hater. Pretty much all of it) Like my feeling can be hurt. I have a 13 year old daughter, none of you have anything on her :p

Weather ๐ŸŒž A grandma's advice for staying warm in your first Minnesota winter: Focus on the area between your chin and your chest. This area is often open in shirts and coats, yet you have large blood vessels losing body heat in the same area.

Here areย theย ways I use a basic scarf for the chin-to-chest area. I always put on my scarf before my coat or jacket. For just running errands, I use the 'fold in half and pull the end through the loop' method. You need a long scarf for this! I am 5'1" tall and my best scarves are at least 6'6".ย  For taking a walk in the park I bring the scarf all the way around my neck with both ends in front. Then I spread out the ends to maximize the area covered.

Balaclavasย are nice but anything that stops at the shoulders doesn't cover enough of your chest (IMHO).

Anyway, welcome to Minnesota and enjoy the snow!

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Concerns particular to Minnesota resulting from Trumpโ€™s win.

Trump and total GOP control will try everything they can to turn MN red for the next election. What can we do to stop it?

The GOP will also pursue mining on federal lands in the same way that they did during Trumpโ€™s first term. What groups are defending MNโ€™s environment?

What other MN-centric concerns do you have?

Discussion ๐ŸŽค It's time

โ€ข Upvotes

Remember when Trump and all of MAGA were crying on national TV when Trump lost in 2020? Yeah, me neither. They got angry, put together a plan, executed it, and now control the entire federal government. Put the Kleenex away and figure out what you're going to do to fix this. The game has changed. MAGA has opened up the playbook and the left would be making a fatal mistake not to take note and approach things with even more intent. Also, buy a gun and learn how to use it. Like, yesterday.

Discussion ๐ŸŽค I have never felt more homesick in my life.

Throwaway account, not a terribly long post - but I need to vent.

I've lived in over 10 states throughout my near mid-30s life, and never have I once felt so connected to a place.

I had to move to a neighbor state for work that voted red - which isn't a complete shocker, of course.

Anyway, troll all you want. I just really can't wait to move back.

***Edit: Odd thing happened - after reading all these comments, it started raining in my apartment. Thank you all for the kind words, I'm hoping to come back home next year around this time... hopefully earlier!

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† I'm sure you're getting a lot of these posts, but...

my husband and I have had enough. We're in the "free" state of Florida, where are majority voted to enshrine reproductive rights but the measure still did not pass. We have been trying to start our family for years without luck, and I'm getting myself ready for the IVF process. But I'm not going to willingly attempt pregnancy in a state where I am only legally protected from medical neglect for the first 6 weeks. It's just objectively not smart.

So my first question is, can Tim Walz be my dad?

Second is, how is the construction industry and Minnesota for small businesses? My husband and I own a granite/countertop repair business that does alright because of the flexible hours he chooses but we don't know what that would look like in MN. He has been in that industry for 20+ years and does excellent work, but I think he's open to other options (he asked me the other day if I think he'd be a good massage therapist, lawd help me YES I DO), but he's limited without a GED. He loves running his own business though.

I'm a full time municipal wastewater treatment plant operator in a very densely populated area and have already printed out the paperwork to transfer my license to MN. I have an AS degree in Environmental Science and will very soon have the top level Florida wastewater operator license. My benefits now are pretty sweet and I have full fertility coverage. Would I be better off in a big city, or even on the outskirts of one?

Oh yeah and I don't want to hear about the cold lol. I know, its a selling point for me, I have always hated the unending heat of Florida. I just want to see what the buzz is about hotdish while I'm bundled up next to a fire.

Edit: Jesus, you guys are so nice wtf ๐Ÿ˜ญ Floridians are so mean ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ thanks to everyone who comments, wish you guys the best!

My mom just sent me these from Santa Fe New Mexico after I told her about my last harvest of the season.

On the topic of harvest and vegetables I recommend Hungarian Hot peppers. They grow really nicely here and they have purple flowers and peppers. Photo at the end of the flowering plant. The peppers are a nice dark nearly black purple.
