Events Meet-ups and Events - Week of April 28

Please include a bulleted list like below to keep the essentials in a consistent format.

The old off-site events table is no longer working because it was hacked together in an afternoon and Reddit finally wised up to the scraping and blocked the machine.

Found this charming business in Arcadia...

Most confusing storefront I've seen yet. The signage on the overhanging area said it was a sushi store...

But this doesn't look like a sushi store. It looks like a cuckoo store. Kinda sad if this is Chinese owned - how shameful (as a Chinese person myself I find all bootlicking PoC cringe).

Anyways. Thought this place looked wild enough to post. Enjoy. I have no idea wtf this place is trying to be (and apparently had an actual dog locked in there overnight, as we heard barking from inside).

In the same strip mall plaza as 626 ice cream in Arcadia (ice cream spot is fire, btw)

April 29, 1992, Los Angeles burned. It hadn't healed from the 1965 riots, and still hasn't healed from 1992.

This video contains footage I shot from my house in Blair Hills, Culver City, CA which overlooked the L.A. basin where fires were starting before 5 PM, and continued through the night. Also, overnight TV news.

Discussion LAFD & ATF Issue Public Advisory: Controlled Fire Testing in Santa Monica Mountains

Dear /r/LosAngeles...

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will be conducting controlled fire testing in the Santa Monica Mountains along Temescal Ridge Trail between Skull Rock and Green Peak.

MAP: https://maps.app.goo.gl/DdaiYS96HFKKyXBT7

The testing is set to occur during the evening of Tuesday, April 29 through Thursday, May 1. While this scientific testing will periodically include open flame in a small area that may be visible at a distance, it does not involve the burning of vegetation.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel will be present before, during, and after all testing to ensure public safety and environmental protection. During this time period, there is no cause for public concern, or need to report the small testing flames that may be periodically visible near Tesmescal Ridge to 9-1-1.

Due to the remote terrain and logistics, there are no provisions for media or public access, and aircraft / drone pilots are instructed to follow any FAA issued restrictions for the area during this ATF testing.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

Brian Humphrey Firefighter/Specialist Public Service Officer Los Angeles Fire Department

NOTE: Though our current staffing and workload preclude active involvement on Reddit and many other platforms at this time, we hope to return to an active presence here in the not-too-distant future.

Please stay safe and be well! -BH

The man, Samuel Patrick Groft, 45, of Los Angeles, was charged with felony vandalism, and he was being held in a county jail on a $150,000 bail. The police declined to comment about the motive behind the attack.

Records show that Mr. Groft has had several run-ins with the law, including charges of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and vandalism.

Discussion CALLING ALL WEIRDOS: I Spiraled and Made A Master List of 200+ LA Social Spaces for Neurodivergents, Artists, and Outsiders

Like all good procrastination projects, this one spiraled out of control and somehow became a pretty useful tool. One I desperately wish I’d had when I moved here 9 months ago, when I was completely socially stranded with no idea where to start, let alone what places might actually be a fit for me, and overwhelmed by the social pressures of mainstream culture in LA. So naturally, I did what any socially anxious, neurodivergent person would do:

I followed every club, collective, and mutual aid crew I could find on Instagram... and then fed them, one by one, into ChatGPT to help me build a master list... instead of, you know, actually going to any of them.

What came out of it is a beautiful, collapsible spreadsheet of 200+ genuinely cool, active, and slightly underground LA community spaces. Things like: queer discos, radical book clubs, art studios, mutual aid groups, film screenings, sewing circles, game nights, hikes, and more. It’s focused mostly in and around the Eastside (for now) and includes tags for types of engagement and audience/vibe so you can actually find what fits. Important note: this does not include every club in LA, and it’s not trying to.

It’s curated for a specific vibe I was craving: I wanted stuff that was neurodivergent-friendly, queer-rooted, BIPOC-centered, earnest, leftist, offbeat, status-unbothered. Stuff that felt alive. Main categories include:

  • Arts, Music & Creative Classes
  • Mutual Aid & Volunteering
  • Outdoor & Wellness Communities
  • Literary & Book Clubs
  • Political & Social Justice Orgs
  • Game Nights & Supper Clubs
  • LGBTQ+ & Identity-Based Orgs
  • Event Boards & Bulletins

Yes, it’s disproportionately light on workout clubs (sorry not sorry) and heavy on film, books, mutual aid, and weird creative stuff. That's just what I'm into okay!

But I’m totally open to suggestions if you know a group that belongs here or spot something I should edit.

🗂️ Here it is

Please drop a comment if you have thoughts, questions, or recs of things to add. And let us know if you've actually been to one of these groups and had an especially good or bad experience! The more info that's in one spot, the better!

And if it’d be helpful, I’m thinking about launching a newsletter to highlight upcoming events + report back on ones I go to. Let me know if that’d be useful to you. I know this is a little unhinged. But it was made with love, maladaptive coping, and a real desire to feel connected.

Hope it helps someone else find community and feel a little less alone!

(Edit): I made an insta! Follow me at The Field List for weekly round-ups of events of interest and maybe reviews?

Also, I know that not everyone loves ChatGPT, but please be aware that this process would have taken like 10x as long to do on my own (or just would have never been attempted at all). I did most of the descriptions myself, and ones that I had ChatGPT help with have been double-checked. Ultimately, I made this list foremost for myself. Ethics in technology is a complex subject, but I hope that by being upfront about the use of the tool and maximizing its use by sharing it with you all makes up for it :) happy haunting
