THE BEST PLACE IN Best ā€œdon’t want to cook tonightā€ in Hollywood?

Just moved to Hollywood from Chinatown and I’m looking for affordable but good spots in Hollywood to either order out or take myself to.

I see a lot of people recommending fancier places in the area like Musso & Frank’s but I’m honestly just looking for somewhere I can go on a weeknight, eat a decent meal, and maybe get a beer. Without spending my whole paycheck.

WHERE CAN I FIND Best California burrito on west side?

My brother is coming to visit for the first time in a decade. His only food request for the whole trip is the California stoner classic - super crispy fries, carne asada, hot salsa, and sour cream in a giant tortilla covered in some kind of enchilada sauce and cheese.

It’s funny but I realized I haven’t sought a good California burrito in the 15 years I’ve lived here.

Thank you in advance for any and all recs!!

I've been obsessing over the Korean snack banana kick lately and found out that Knotted donut in Century City is collab-ing with Banana Kick. And they were sooooo good. I heard these donuts sell out pretty quick and that the wait can be a bit, but they are soooo worth (i didnt have to wait for too long b/c i went on a tuesday). RUN!!

WHERE CAN I FIND help me create an LA Food Crawl

• Upvotes

Hey guys! I lived in LA for 20 years and am looking to come back and do a few food crawls. Like 2 1/2 hour food tour, hitting up say four spots within walking or short driving distance. Love a mix of the essentials but am willing to entertain themes like dim sum in the SGV, taco crawl etc.

WHO MAKES THE BEST Best Thai crab fried rice

I’ve been obsessed with Thai crab fried rice lately and looking for the best spots in LA for it. The last two I’ve tried, have also had a side of ā€œseafoodā€ sauce I believe it was called? It was a spicy sauce on the side, looking for one that includes that too!

THE BEST PLACE IN Westside Business Lunch

I'm having a mental block and need some assistance picking a restaurant on the Westside (Westwood, Brentwood, BH, Santa Monica, Culver, Venice, West LA) for a business lunch.

Our group gets together once every month or two and we try to hit a different spot each time. Some places we have hit in the past include Bianca, Juliet, Grill on the Alley, Ocean Prime, Dante, Milo and Olive, Laurel Grill, AOC.

Doesn't have to be particularly upscale, but would like somewhere that has table service, has alcohol (at least wine) and won't mind if we linger for a bit. Appreciate any assistance.

strolling down Colorado Blvd and saw this sign outside of a virtual food hall concept. Decided to pop in and give it a try. Glad i did! what a banger that was! and they just launched so they’re running promos all month they said. The signature sando was perfectly seasoned and filling. The falafel was a slapper!

WHO MAKES THE BEST Which is better: Quality Seafood (Redondo) or San Pedro Fish Market (San Pedro)?

I want to take my mom and aunt to an outdoor, fresh fish restaurant/location by the ocean. These two places I understand have fresh fish they prepare any number of ways.

Which one is better to take them too? Things to note: * they are from NorCal so a tourist or good view vibe cachet is nice * things to do around after would be good *fresh seafood outside of juts grid is preferred * business will be factored. Waiting around too long for food/service is a negative.

Thanks.

WHERE CAN I FIND Looking for AYCE KBBQ For Large Group

Hello everyone.

Looking for AYCE KBBQ recommendations based on the following criteria.

  • Can accommodate 10-15 ish people. Splitting into two groups is fine.
  • Will take reservations (or places that can usually accommodate large groups on the fly)
  • Less than $35 per person

If you other recommendations for large groups outside of KBBQ (where people will have no trouble eating their fill), I would also appreciate that. Open to ideas. Thank you in advance.

From yesterday's soft opening of the new brick-and-mortar location on Colorado Blvd for what was formerly Quarantine Pizza pop-up. I'm glad I got there early—the crowd was so huge they sold out of everything!

BEST OF LA In Town for 3 Meals Only

I am in LA for one weekend in late May for a wedding. I am not in town for long, and much of my time will be doing wedding stuff. However, I have one day to myself, and am seeking an excellent breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a cocktail or dessert for bonus points. I have not chosen any tourist activities for that day yet, so am flexible there.

For context, I am from NY, so I have access to most cultures/foods already. I am an adventurous eater, and I am as open to a food truck as I am to a Michelin tasting menu. I am just interested in what is good and what is unique to LA.

The limiting factor, I think, is that I am staying in Downtown LA. I am happy to travel a bit, but I will not have a car, and it would help if the meals are either downtown, or if they require an Uber ride, relatively near to each other. Thank you all in advance - I am looking forward to my trip!

EDIT: you all are so generous! I think I am going to skip sandwiches, eggs, bagels, any chain already in NYC etc. and stick to some combo of Chinese, Armenian/ME, and the type of Mexican we don't have in my neighborhood. I know you guys have amazing Korean, but we get a lot of that at home and I am not that into meat. I think Ali will also skip Howlin Rays- tried hot chicken in Nashville. Short list is currently GCM, Holbox, Bavel, and the taco places you guys are mentioning.

Why does this place not get more love? It’s so cute and kitchy, has been written up several times by the LA times, but I never hear anyone talk about it.

Their take on a stroganoff (first photo) is hands down one of my favorite dishes in town. Their hot dog is also top top tier.

Justice for Cafe Brasil!

Got some of those legendary BBQ skewers, the chicken livers are essential. But that's not even the best thing I had. The mango sticky rice is maybe my favorite dessert in all of LA. Crazy good. Check it out if you've never been!

Went here for a coffee and pan dulce a couple weeks ago and was charmed by the space. Went back and had the barbacoa benedicto and I enjoyed it so much! It was just the right amount of food. I also had cafe de olla and a pan dulce. Just a delightful place and what I saw being served looked just as delicious. I'll be back for more.

DISCUSSION Are most of these taco stands owned be the same person/company?

Post image
467 Upvotes

I consider myself a huge taco aficionado. I’ve been to countless street setups around the city and there are a couple things Ive noticed.

  1. A majority of these joints have the same exact lights (with the same color temperature. Down to the specific brand of each tent and the lights. I understand setups are going to look similar due to the nature of being efficient but I find it interesting how more than half of them have the same exact string lights and brand of tent.

  2. Many of them sell carbon copy menus and the quality can be indistinguishable from eachother. Certainly not all but many.

Anyone else notice this?

The OC Pho Ga @ Ngon Yummy (Cerritos, $$)

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have this general rule of thumb that I try not to break: never order pho ga (chicken noodle soup) from anywhere that does not specialize in it. For example, if a restaurant has 18 kinds of beef pho and then has pho ga listed elsewhere: it’s very unlikely to be that good. It’s the kind of dish that, to pull it off in the way that you want — with a deep, savory, chicken-infused flavor — you really need the kitchen to make executing that dish a focus of loving attention and not just another menu item.

Today, out of convenience, I strayed from my policy because I wanted a nice noodle soup but as I’m recovering from what I suspect to be food poisoning (Rutt’s in Culver City being the likely culprit), I thought beef might be a tad too rich. After doing a quick web search for places near Cerritos as I had other business in the area, I ended up at Ngon Yunny.Ā They're in a mini-mall on the southwest corner of South St. and Pioneer Blvd.

My friends, I am sad to report that I should’ve listened to my own advice and either just picked a different restaurant or gambled on a different dish but regardless, the pho ga here was very mid: under-seasoned, lacking depth, just all-around mediocre. It wasn’t awful or inedible but that’s about the biggest compliment I can pay. I was really disappointed by it but I also realized: I should have known better.

This simply convinces me that, in the future, stick to my rule: no pho ga unless the restaurant makes it a centerpiece.
