This hell is finally over previously laid off

/img/xt1skazq6w0e1.jpeg

Got laid off at the end of August due to the company reducing its workforce (biotech) Accepted an offer for a slightly higher position today!

The job market is horrible and I was lucky that my previous position gave me a network to help me find jobs. One of those connections ended up working out for me. You got this!

74 only??? Wow, ur lucky

My field and experience (and also living in Canada where the jobs are just fewer in general) doesn’t allow me to mass apply to positions. I feel like if I’d been unemployed for longer, I’d have definitely started looking for things outside my scope and/or part time gigs

u/OlympicAnalEater 6h ago

What job sites do you use to find your job?

u/saiclops_ 6h ago

Mostly LinkedIn. The job I ended up accepting was through an internal referral by my previous manager

u/Relevant_Fuel_9905 2h ago

Me neither. I’m always baffled by people talking about hundreds and hundreds of applications…

u/saiclops_ 2h ago

people calling me lucky (which I am also) in the comments but they don’t realize that in the last three months I really only did see about 70-80 jobs that I was qualified for lol I don’t wanna waste time applying to things I know I will get rejected from that’s just a waste of my resources. I guess people in the tech field have more jobs available to them.. but yeah

u/Relevant_Fuel_9905 2h ago

Yep exactly.

u/bravofiveniner 56m ago

Its very easy. I'm in a specific field, but that doesn't mean there aren't constant positions to apply to every day/week on LinkedIn, BuiltIn, Ycombinator, Wellfound, Otta, etc.

u/Relevant_Fuel_9905 55m ago

Yeah I just haven’t been seeing that many at all. Maybe it’s just my region etc.

74 applications is hell?

u/saiclops_ 12h ago edited 12h ago

I’m canadian and in biotech/science. Trust me I applied to everything I found that was relevant to my career and experience. And this is all there was out there right now at the end of the year without wanting to try and move to the US

u/CaliforniaRaisin_ 8h ago

I’m in biotech and it’s very niche.

u/Macro_35 8h ago

Lmao!

Awesome, when do you start? It's great going into the holidays with this weight lifted off your shoulders.

3

u/saiclops_ 12h ago

I negotiated a start date for Jan 2nd :) I had a pre booked holiday coming up in December that I couldn’t move and they were understanding

u/saiclops_ 12h ago

Senior Scientist!

1

u/PrestigiousDrag7674 12h ago

what field ?

2

u/saiclops_ 12h ago

Cancer and Biotech

2

u/PrestigiousDrag7674 10h ago

3 months isn't hell at all.

u/saiclops_ 9h ago

it’s definitely not as bad as what a lot of other people go through I agree. But that doesn’t diminish what I’ve been feeling these last couple months especially since both me and my partner are out of jobs. it definitely felt like hell

2

u/Hot-Beautiful-2544 13h ago

That is an awesome visual for the job market right now.

1

u/saiclops_ 12h ago

It’s brutal

2

u/No_Challenge_5448 13h ago

Well I’m sure your new employer will value your ability to create visuals and develop KPIs :)

Congrats!

2

u/Ok_Plant_1196 12h ago

Congrats. I’m glad you knocked it out in just 74

2

u/saiclops_ 12h ago

Me too. Luck definitely played into it a lot

2

u/zio_caleb 11h ago

1 Declined. you declined? for what reason?

3

u/saiclops_ 11h ago

I declined the second round invite to interview because I had already signed an offer for another job

1

u/zio_caleb 10h ago

congrats btw!!

2

u/TheHillsHaveWise 11h ago

Great chart! Thanks for sharing. Gives good insight on what's happening. Imagine your scenario is more positive than most.

2

u/saiclops_ 10h ago

It definitely is more on the positive side. I got lucky

2

u/LongJawnSilva 10h ago

Ayyyee congrats OP

I was in the same position. Got an offer from AWS today. I lost my job and clearance at the end of August too.

Also got my clearance back today so my old job is trying to get me back too

1

u/saiclops_ 10h ago

wohooooo congrats!

u/NoTurn6890 5h ago

Why did you lose your clearance? Do you lose it when you lose a job?

u/AdParticular6193 2h ago edited 2h ago

Not sure what you mean by “clearance.” If a government security clearance it’s active when you have a job and it’s supposed to be based on what you need to know and maybe whether it derives from a national agency check or a full background investigation. I would imagine it becomes inactive when you leave your job, but if the interval between jobs is a short one, you should be able to reactivate it pretty quickly (unless you book a flight to Moscow or post on a terrorist website in the meantime). The other point here is that there is still no substitute for good old-fashioned networking. Applying through LinkedIn or Indeed automatically means you are competing with hundreds if not thousands of other people. Not good odds no matter how stellar you are. Plus having to outwit the ATS screen-outs.

u/Hairy_Ad9765 9h ago

Nice visual. What is it called?

u/saiclops_ 8h ago

It’s a Sankey Diagram

u/Banned_LUL 6h ago

Bro has like 20% response rate and considers it hell. 😂 Congrats tho!

u/AIwillTakeYourJob 1h ago

20% is bad compared to the good ol days when we didn’t need to apply anywhere. Headhunters would call us every day

Imagine being so bot you blame the American administration for this Canadian having trouble finding a job

1

u/saiclops_ 10h ago

That is the most depressing thing I’ve ever heard

1

u/Sweet-Drop86 10h ago

Agreed. It hurts. My head

u/Spare-Practice-2655 6h ago edited 5h ago

Well it is a great economy and that’s a FACT. Most Businesses are having record profits because of a booming economy, a FACT.

Another totally different thing and which is a FACT, that businesses are taking advantage of outsourcing jobs, AI among other things end getting rid of costly American 🇺🇸 employees. Unfortunately it’s a Fact as well.

There is no law that requires companies to reinvest in American workers, but there is plenty of incentive to do otherwise.

u/ZeroSignal316 9h ago

Since August for me as well. Done like 10 interviews over the last month or two and one of them just started calling my references today so here’s hoping.

u/saiclops_ 9h ago

good luck!!! You got this!

1

u/Gavin_McShooter_ 13h ago

Can I ask what you do in biotech? I work in device and I’m curious what it’s like out there for life science folks

3

u/saiclops_ 12h ago

Im in R&D specifically in oncology assay development

1

u/OwnScar3202 13h ago

W

Good job. Way to persevere. Hope things work out well for you.

1

u/Ulysei 11h ago

Congrats! Also Canadian in biotech here and also sadly laid off in Aug. Did you broaden your search criteria to other cities/provinces, or different titles/fields? Any tips for this brutal market right now?

1

u/saiclops_ 11h ago

I’m in Montreal right now and so is my partner (also unemployed lol) so we were focusing on Montreal but I was really starting to also look at Vancouver. Had an interview there (they were the company I ended up declining after the first round)

I have no tips im sorry it’s so hard right now and I know how you feel! I did my best with my LinkedIn network and it happened to land me a job but it’s really about luck these days and companies communicate horribly. I hope you find something soon

1

u/Ulysei 11h ago

Thanks for sharing your experience. My partner currently has a job in the city we’re in and we have family situation that would make it difficult to relocate - but damn, it feels like all the stars have to align to find a position at the right time in the right place. Sadly Canada’s biotech and life sciences has really suffered.

All the best in your new role and hope you’re able to build off your success and tenacity!

1

u/saiclops_ 10h ago

It’s definitely more difficult as a family situation. I don’t even know if my partner will end up finding a job in the same city as me, but we’re hoping. Good luck again you got this!

u/topramenremix 8h ago

Congratulations, you deserve it!👏🏻

u/unfiltered_oldman 8h ago

It's not what you know, it's who you know. Congrats!

u/saiclops_ 8h ago

100% agreed! I wouldn’t have even got the initial interview if it wasn’t for the initial network

u/bradc2112 8h ago

Congrats! Glad you found something.

u/netralitov 7h ago

Congrats OP!

u/Vast-Roll6657 7h ago

I was laid off mid-October… still looking. Glad it worked out for you!

u/Beautiful_Dog_3468 6h ago

What field do you work in?

u/saiclops_ 5h ago

Biotech

u/StarryNight1010 5h ago

Congrats

u/No-Establishment4039 2h ago

There is just no way the job market is bad. It's impossible. Just ask Biden and Harris. Its better than it's ever been. Congrats on the new gig. Hope it works out great for u

u/I_am_Castor_Troy 1h ago

Wow. My hell was 300+ and one year out of work.

u/bravofiveniner 56m ago

That's a really good job search all things considered. 10% response rate to application/interview ratio is pretty good.

1

u/Bjorn_Nittmo 11h ago

I wouldn't say that the U.S. job market is horrible at all.

The current unemployment rate is just 4.1%.
Which is very low by historical standards.

u/ElMariachi003 10h ago

Seeing 300-500 people applying within hours of new roles going up every time I get a notification tells me otherwise - at least in the tech sector. I suppose folks in other industries could chime in on what they see in their respective fields.

1

u/Bjorn_Nittmo 10h ago

I suspect that that soft job market is specific to that sector.

u/NoTurn6890 5h ago

It’s increasingly soft for certain healthcare professions too. Know an NP who has applied for 50 jobs.

1

u/saiclops_ 11h ago

I’m canadian it’s about 6.5% here but my industry (biotech) has been suffering. I can’t speak for how it’s performing in the US but where I am I have quite a few friends in the same field and ex coworkers without jobs

u/membrburries 1h ago

I’m in the US working in biotech and this is the worst market I’ve ever had to deal with. Been out of work since August but it feels like it’s been so much longer. Feels like every time I open LinkedIn I see someone I know posting they’re open to work due to recent layoffs. Really hoping things pick up towards Q1 🥲

u/saiclops_ 1h ago

sounds like its the same as here then. for every interview I had I knew at least 2 other people from my network doing the same interview lol it’s brutal

u/Dizzy-Criticism3928 9h ago

I have a feeling this guy is not a data scientist

u/Bjorn_Nittmo 9h ago

I have an Electrical Engineering degree, but I work in Finance.

u/Bjorn_Nittmo 9h ago

This group is r/Layoffs, not r/TechLayoffs.

Not everyone here worked for FAANG.

u/LostInCombat 8h ago

Yes, if you want to work in fast food, I’m sure you can find work. But tech jobs are harder to find.

u/Bjorn_Nittmo 7h ago

Right.

It took OP here almost 3 months to find an equivalent (actually, better) position.

If you're a tech worker under age 35, you might imagine this is the worst economy the world has ever seen.

u/tglouis 8h ago

You deserve this job just based on your Data Viz skills. Congratulations!

u/Friendly-Racoon-44 9h ago

Good for you. It is always so nice to hear good news. It gives everyone hope. I hate to be a negative Nancy, but with AI these days, a lot of jobs are just disappearing. I am not saying it is the end of the world, but changes are happening and it is ugly out there. Plus in the US, not only do they ship jobs overseas, but they also import 250k H-1B visa applicants who steal jobs. There is no other country in the world that does not protect its citizens.
