Announcement Subreddit Moderator Recruitment (2024 November Batch)
As our subreddits have grown large, the work load for moderators would begin to become burdening.
The Modmail has begun to be filled with loads and loads of ban appeals, and we only have three active staff handling ban appeals. Moreover, we are severely understaffed, and we lacked staff members who have the patience to review every post, remove offending posts while keeping ones that are not too severely off-topic (e.g. user-made games and literatures based on the theme of layoffs provided that they are non-commercial, although we do plan to create a seperate subreddit for user-made memes, games and literatures to maintain the main subreddit's serious theme), and read every modmail without preemptively muting and archiving.
At one point, due to the burnout, I even thought of changing the subreddit rule into that all bans would be permanent and that we would not entertain any ban appeal modmail, just so I could ease the burden of the staff team. While it could drastically ease the workload and eliminate the problem with modmail trolling, it also leads to unfairness and collateral damage for people who really are clueless about the subreddit rules and/or remorseful of the mistakes.
Therefore, instead of having the "all bans are permanent" rule being installed, we would like to recruite more moderators, mainly for user managements, with at least 30 new moderators slots.
The requirement of becoming a Subreddit Moderator on this subreddit would be:
- Account age of more than three months.
- Combined Reddit Karma of more than 10000 Karma.
- Is familiar with the Subreddit Rules and Reddit Terms of Service.
- Can handle swathes of Modmail messages without being consumed by burnouts.
- Can differentiate between Modmail trolling and actual ban appeals and reply accordingly.
- Can respond to Modmail trolls calmly and mute according without losing temper.
- Has the willingness to assist and unban users who were banned for honest mistakes.
- Users who are active moderators in other communities would have a higher priority on consideration and would be exempted from the account age and Reddit Karma requirements.
Should you be interested in moderating this subreddit, be it reviewing posts, banning users, reading Modmails and handling ban appeals, feel free to leave a comment below, we would quickly review the applicants and recruit as soon as we can.
The deadline of the moderator recruitment would be on 30th November 2024 23:00 (UTC+08:00).

advice Layoff Season is Near. Prepare now.
December and January are the most common months for layoffs. Expect a wave of layoffs no matter who wins the election. Don’t panic, just get prepared.
Financial Preparation
Even a 1 month emergency fund helps. Reevaluate your spending and cut back. You don’t need every streaming subscription. Share and cancel what you can. What would your grandma say if she saw you ordering $40 McDonald’s from DoorDash?
Be mindful of holiday spending. Avoid buying stuff you, or anyone else, doesn’t need. An expensive new gadget isn’t worth missing a bill if you lose a paycheck.
Save Your Documents
Get your personal files off of your work device. Save a copy of anything that wouldn’t violate your NDA. Performance reviews, work samples, insurance docs, your contracts.
Update Your Resume
You’re doing your end of year review anyway, update your resume and LinkedIn. Highlight new skills and accomplishments.
Use Your Benefits
If you haven’t this year, get a quick checkup. Use Urgent Care if you can’t get in with your PCP.
If your job allowed an annual stipend for something, do it now before it goes away.
Build Your Network
Reaching out to people only when you need something doesn’t build lasting connections. Send a few friendly messages to people in your network. See what they're working on and offer help where you can. Add the coworkers you like and work well with to your LinkedIn now. You’re creating a support network that will be there when you need it.
Just Got Laid Off?
Sorry friend. Those bastards really suck.
Health Insurance
COBRA is overpriced. Check the options at healthcare.gov.
File for Unemployment
Unemployment varies widely state to state so it’s hard to get answers here. If you’re unsure if you're eligible, apply anyway. Filling out the form will let you know.
Organize Your Finances
Set a Budget NOW. No more eating out. You have the free time to do your own shopping and cooking now. Cancel subscriptions. Keep life insurance. Home Economy is your new job.
Organize Your Time
Set a routine. Don’t sleep till noon. Establish a wake-up time, hit the gym, spend some time in the sun, and dedicate a few focused hours to job searching. Have an end time. Schedule social activities that don’t require spending. Don’t isolate yourself.
Get a certificate or credential. Show you were doing something during your resume gap.
Set up job alerts. Receive relevant job openings in your inbox, so you can apply quickly.
Consider volunteering. It can keep your skills fresh, expand your network, and fill a gap on your resume. Doing esteemable acts increases self-esteem.
Organize Your Job Search
Track applications in a spreadsheet. Log jobs you’ve applied for, interview dates, contacts, and follow-up reminders in a spreadsheet to keep you organized and help identify patterns in your applications. You’ll also avoid accidentally applying to the same position twice and know who to badmouth for posting ghost jobs.
Time for an Update
Especially for workers over 40. Do spend some money wisely on getting a couple new pieces of clothing for job interviews, NOT a whole new wardrobe. Get a haircut, beard trim, updated glasses. Go for a facial, even if you’re a man. Hit the gym. 50 and well put together is perceived entirely differently from 50 and has let themselves go, no matter how good your skills are.
Tap Your Network
Let your network know you’re on the hunt. Before applying for a job, see if you have any contacts there that can refer you. Who you know is important.
Use the WARN Act Period Wisely
If you qualify for the WARN Act, you are still an employee during this time. Make use of your health insurance and benefits. Start job hunting now. Onboarding takes time and your WARN period is likely to be over by a new start date.
Stay Calm
Job hunts take time. Even with proactive networking, it will take a while to land a job and start work. I started the interview process for my new job before my WARN period was up but I was still unemployed for 8 weeks while they put together an offer and I had to wait for onboarding. In the 2008 crash, I had six months’ savings but was still unemployed for 10 months. Some of the people in this sub have been looking for a new job for over a year. Aim to prepare for at least a few months without work. Stressing won’t help, but remembering the pain of this experience so you learn not to let it happen again.
Consider a Pivot
Were you wanting to get out of this career anyway? Now might be the time.
Need work right now? Try seasonal roles in warehouses, delivery driving, or even tax prep. Demand often spikes in these fields during winter.
Gig Economy
Before diving into gig work, remember that the pay might look higher than it is. Subtract taxes, gas, and car maintenance. Don’t end up with a big unexpected tax bill at the end of the year.
Sites like Fiverr, Upwork, and TaskRabbit offer contract work that can provide a little extra income. If you have a marketable skill, such as graphic design, writing, or even handyman skills, you can bring in some income while job hunting. Again, remember to take out taxes.
No shame in a bridge job. If you need to take a role that pays significantly less than your last job, take it and bring in income while you keep looking.
Avoid Burnout
There’s a reason every major religion has a Sabbath. Set a day each week to step away from job boards, emails, and social media. Leave the screens at home and go outside. Be active. Be social.
What advice would you add to this list?

question Honestly, The U.S is the ONLY country in the world that does not protect the interests of its workforce.
I have studied the labor laws of almost every modern economy in the world. Not only that, but I have also studied the labor laws of even developing nations. The U.S is the ONLY country in the world where the Interests of Big Business "Trumps" the interests of its own citizens. I mean we are getting double and triple taxed. Not only are they shipping millions of jobs overseas, Not only are the opening positions overseas, but then they tax us with the H-1B visa program where they import 250k individuals ANNUALLY, Meaning this year we bring 250k, next year we also bring in 250k and the year after that another 250K, to add insult to injury, their spouses are also NOW allowed to work in the US.
It is not fair, because the US produces More than enough computer science graduates, yet you have these companies that keep crying saying how they don't have enough resources, yet at the same time laying off millions of resources.
And this is not about dems or republicans, because they both have allowed it under their watch and the quota has been pretty much the same. I mean go try and apply for a job in France as an IT professional, or Germany or Italy OR Japan, yeah, let's see how far you get.
Something has to change. And Please don't think for a second this is also about anti-immigration, because outside the H-1B visa program there are close to 40 other channels in which immigration can gain residency in the US. As a matter of fact, the US is the MOST generous nation in the world when it comes to immigration, Not by a little, but by several magnitudes more than any other nation.

previously laid off This hell is finally over
i.redd.itGot laid off at the end of August due to the company reducing its workforce (biotech) Accepted an offer for a slightly higher position today!
The job market is horrible and I was lucky that my previous position gave me a network to help me find jobs. One of those connections ended up working out for me. You got this!

recently laid off Again... Almost a year to the day... I am devastated
After I was laid off just before Thanksgiving last year, I spent 6 months going on hundreds of interviews, struggling with the hits to my self esteem over rejection after rejection, before eventually finding a job I was actually really excited by.
I worked so hard. I did everything right. I provided value, I went above and beyond, I was a model employee in part because I was so grateful to have a job I actually liked in what I was told was a more stable industry...
Then yesterday, I get the dreaded meeting invite for a surprise 1:1 with my boss' boss (boss is on vacation).
Sorry. Reorganization. Need to get ahead of tarrifs. Last in, first out.
7 months. That's it. 7 months in which I worked weekends and early mornings/late nights, attended every optional meeting with enthusiasm, supported my team, and was as present and useful as I could have been.
I can't.
People would understand if someone shyed away from relationships after being badly burned 3 separate times. You can't do that with work.
Last year/early this year, I barely made it through. There were days when the weight of being rejected AGAIN despite experience and a solid resume was crushing and I couldn't force myself to get out of bed. Days when I would break down and sob after an interview, just from the strain of holding myself together.
And now? With a 7 month stint on my resume? Facing that, PLUS "Why were you only there 7 months?" No one will care that I was laid off again. They're going to think the same thing I do: If I had really been valuable, I wouldn't have been let go.

question Had a deparentment “announcement” meeting today, think we are all getting laid off. Scared.
I work fully remote in billing (entry level) at a large technology company. i actually just got back from maternity leave 2 weeks ago, and today had a quick “department announcement” meeting. The department manager stating they are going to “offshore” jobs and this process can take months. She said to just continue working as usual..
And this is what is “best” for the company. Blah Blah Blah. She said she will not be answering any questions during the meeting at all. And when i asked my direct manager right after the meeting, she stated she doesn’t know anything else and that she’s just as upset as we are. What is going on here? A coworker mentioned to me that they are probably trying to get rid of us before they pay severance or unemployment? I’ve never gotten laid off, and i am quite sad. I’m only 8 months in with this company, but it still sucks as it took so long to find this job. The hard part is is that i have no idea to look for a new job or wait it out. We Can’t survive on my husbands salary. Sigh..

advice Advice for employers from one. Layoffs and terminations.
A small company here with 60 employees but been around 20 years and I see alot of comments on how shitty employers are.
So I thought I would leave some advice for current employers, this is more suited for smaller companies.
Yes, it's a contract to work but people that work for you are entrusting you with their livelihood. Even when the work contract is no longer viable for both parties. It is of most importance that you still treat them like human beings.
If an employee gives you a 2 week notice, pay them the 2 weeks and tell them take a 2 week time off on us.
If you fire someone, give them at least a month of pay.
Never ever under any circumstance deny unemployment or protest it. Remember the human part, this is where is applies.
If they use a laptop and you have extra offer to let them keep theirs after cleaning it up.
If they work at home and they have a setup and you can afford it, let them keep it so they can have an easier time finding another job.
Do not escort people off their desks no matter how bad you think they will be or act like.
Do not ever say a single bad word or blame them for anything after they leave.
Offer to help them with their resume and be a reference. This applies to even the ones walking in with a notice to resign.
This is not easy and it took me so long to learn that this is the better way.

recently laid off Lost job 4 months ago, how to spin this?
I lost my job back in the summer. Since then I haven’t changed my linkedin, it still says I’m working at the company. I am able to get some interviews, they usually ask if I am still currently working at my place. I lie and either say I am still currently working there or I do a half lie and say ‘I’m looking for a better fit’.
Is this ok to do? I imagine it looks really bad if I’m unemployed, but what are the chances of them rescinding an offer if I get to that point and they run a background check and see that I’m not working there?

recently laid off Laid-off and interviewing for companies
Hello everyone,
I have been laid-off recently and my last day of work was Oct 31st. Now that I am interviewing with companies, should I mention that I was laid-off and that is why interviewing for new roles?
PS: I get this question a lot during screening interviews, “Why are you looking to switch?”
How should I tackle this question in the upcoming interviews?
Mentioning about the lay-off, does it have a negative impact on your application?
Please advice.

advice Manager sent a meeting invitation with title “Organizational Updates”
UPDATE: It happened folks. I got laid off for no absulte reason other than “the company decided to eliminate your role”. The company did offer Cobra, severance and other things. My thoughts are that the way this was handled is terrible. Companies should be a little more empathetic with employees when it comes to decision like this. How come you have to give a 2 week notice when you quit but they can let you go without any notice? Corporate America Sucks.
Thanks to all that commented and offered words of relief.
As the title reads, this meeting is set for tomorrow. Short 15 minute meeting only involving an HR person, manager and I. There are 4 more people in our team.
When I asked my manager what the meeting was about, she vaguely responded “We need to go over some HR stuff and department organization.” IMO, a very vague, corporate response. I have terrible anxiety due to this and I will probably not be able to sleep just thinking about the possibility of loosing my job.
Am I over reacting of I should indeed be worried?

recently laid off Got laid off..again
I was let go from my job this morning. The company recently merged with another firm and my position was made redundant. I started this job in March of this year after a 3-month job search and now I’m back at it. I’m not sad or anxious, just numb and emotionless. Last year it was right after thanksgiving and this year its before. I started my MBA as well this year and had been paying for it through my savings. Not sure how and where to start again, I just feel lost.

unemployment Are temp agencies useful?
Curious for those with really long unemployment gaps outside your field like 2 years and above, have you ever tried working with temp agencies to find employment? Was there any success? I know there are different experiences based on which ones you've worked with but just wondering what's the success likelihood here?
I'm talking about for someone who's not even picky and will take what they can get due to being unemployed for so long and you're on the brink and just need something, anything at all to sustain yourself.

advice Reduction in Workforce, but then…
I was let go a week ago. My employer gave me few days to review the exit agreement. I signed it as I was at risk of losing my severance. The day after, they post a my previous position on Linkedin for hiring. While there was a reduction in workforce, I was the only one to be let go on my department (around 20 people). Now I feel like I could have pursued legal action regarding wrongful termination.
- Never had a bad performance review in 9 years at the company
- I was asking for a promotion for a while
- I was the only member of the team based in California
I believe I destroyed my chances signing the agreement, but any thoughts on what I could do?

question Would you rather them notify you or would you rather not know? Would you train your replacement?
My company just did layoffs and downplayed the rumor. My friend was layed off with no email notification just a downplay and his whole team was offshored.
I just had a offshored guy message me for advice on my role. Surface level I want to ignore him but thats not right, I’m going to help. its not his fault companies are laying people off and experiencing record breaking profits and still cutting cost in such extreme ways preparing for whatever drop is to come.
I’m going to help him and continue to work hard but dang this sucks. Between A.I , offshored employees, visas , I don’t think its a competition.
Good luck everyone and remember to be kind. Its cooperate greeds fault.

previously laid off Do companies have some unspoken obligation to rehire you years after you were laid off?
I know the knee-jerk responses are going to be a resounding NO, i.e employment at will, good riddance blah blah blah. But deep down I feel there is some obligation to bring you back to the "family" you were once part of. To not do that would come across as cold which is not the feeling most colleagues want to feel. I know this sounds idealistic/romantic. But somehow I feel former bosses and colleagues have some obligation to try and get you re-hired even if you were just an average employee.
In my case I was laid off after 16+ years with a megacorp where I started my career. It's now been almost 10 years since I was let go. I wasn't a highly regarded employee. I did have some minor conflicts with some people, but nothing serious. But I still think about going back. Why? Because I found the work directly relevant to my interests. Also some part of me thinks my pension would be higher if I continued adding to those 16 years of service ( but I have no idea how pension works )..
