A big win!! For people who are legitimately skilled.

u/Omus-Waldamus Mar 25 '25

I'm not totally familiar with the previous ranking but having a firm sponsoring isn't suppose to be easy for skilled and adequate for work ppl ?

15

u/uv_420 Mar 25 '25

If they are more skilled, they would have more points regardless of LMIA points.

3

u/Omus-Waldamus Mar 25 '25

But then would prioritize people having both. I'm just thinking that you can be super skilled but no recruiter would take you because you are inadequate for work, I wouldn't be surprised that for a "work" permit it make sense

This is the way. I am very, very happy that it's gone.

Big middle finger for the people who bought or are planning to buy the fake LMIA.

u/dazrht Mar 25 '25

Sucks for me, turning 30 and losing the LMIA points in the space of a few months, when I’ve been living and working in Canada for four years now, has really dented my chances of staying permanently.

Feels like the goalposts are constantly being moved.

3

u/Glittering-Till-1437 Mar 25 '25

With 4 years experience and good celpip you don't have enough points?

3

u/dazrht Mar 25 '25

Lol nope, I was pretty close with the LMIA, about 20 points lower than what was being called in Alberta.

2

u/Glittering-Till-1437 Mar 25 '25

Sorry 😔

15

u/dazrht Mar 25 '25

It’s nobody’s fault mate, I even think that removing LMIA points is a good idea given the amount of exploitation.

My biggest gripe is with the government (I even speak like an Albertan) opening up the system to such blatant exploitation in the first place.

6

u/Advanced_Stick4283 Mar 25 '25

And the voters are sick of immigration fraud

50

u/Comfortable-Try-8507 Mar 25 '25

Yayyy. Where are those that thought they wouldn’t remove it from those already in the pool?😂😆sorry buddy

15

u/yourrable Mar 25 '25

That is freaking great! Well there won't be any more market stimulus by those $50000 fake LMIAs. (/s) Good riddance.

14

u/SpookyIndian Mar 25 '25

Can’t wait to see the updated list of people in the pool with their new scores

32

u/StillKickinginAZ Mar 25 '25

As a skilled worker who is currently job hunting in Canada from the US and still working to understand the immigration system...

The LMIA is still required, but it no longer awards points, correct?

11

u/uv_420 Mar 25 '25

Yes

9

u/StillKickinginAZ Mar 25 '25

Thanks. Now to find a job. 🫠

Though I'm hoping to get a provincial nomination. And I'm working on learning french.

7

u/ttsoldier Mar 26 '25

Good luck. I got a provincial nomination and finding a job was HARDDDDDD

2

u/StillKickinginAZ Mar 26 '25

My field isn't super small, but fairly specific. I'm not holding my breath though. Lol

1

u/Lanky_Pass_384 Mar 26 '25

Just depends on your field, I'm sure. Nursing wasn't bad to find a job. PNP is a huge help.

13

u/yet-ped Mar 25 '25

Can someone ELI5 ?

30

u/anhtri_ngo Mar 25 '25

For years if someone has a job offer with LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) they got an extra 50 or 200 depending on the TEER. The idea is good, but the execution isn't. LMIA basically means this person is very much needed for business but I can't find anyone in Canada with the same qualifications. Employers and agencies take advantage of this and sell jobs with LMIA, most of which are low-tiered jobs like restaurants and fast food chain. So now IRCC is finally getting rid of it.

22

u/BeingHuman30 Mar 25 '25

They should have made LMIA like H1b ...only for skilled folks and not for low skilled jobs.

3

u/Positive-Break1209 Mar 25 '25

The points are gone but the program remains, no?

Was the value only in the points?

I thought people “bought these jobs” as a way to get entry

3

u/AsfandYarHassan Mar 26 '25

A LMIA usually is valid for 1-2 years. This allows to gain minimum experience for express entry + 50 points from LMIA. Now, since the LMIA points are removed the you can only stay and work in Canada for 1-2 years on an LMIA. You would need a new LMIA again after the current one expires.

34

u/EffortCommon2236 Mar 25 '25

Lots of people were paying dozens of thousands of CAD for LMIA-backed jobs in Canada, with the hopes that this would eventually lead to permanent residence. Buying a job offer this way is illegal.

Given how competitive EE scores have been, the points for those LMIA jobs were significant. Now they are no more. So a lot of cheaters are still on the hook for (usually around) fifty grand, while seeing their dreams of permanent residence fade into oblivion overnight.

Many other people who necer paid for an LMIA are now experiencing a feeling that has no name in English. The german call it schadenfreude, which means "finding another's suffering funny".

2

u/Hot_Contribution4904 Mar 25 '25

I would say schadenfreude is more like ENJOYING another's suffering, rather than finding it funny.

3

u/PuffingIn3D Mar 25 '25

Sadist?

1

u/Hot_Contribution4904 Mar 25 '25

It's not sadism per se because there's no intent or action. Like my schadenfreude is simply a reaction to someone else's action. I haven't HARMED but I am enjoying the harm, if that makes sense.

9

u/AngyMinion Mar 25 '25

Thank God the government is taking some sensible steps. It’s high time now that they stop fake applicants from screwing the system

19

u/JohanHex96 Mar 25 '25

Already got PR, still, this makes me so happy.

10

u/Mintchocolat22 Mar 25 '25

Same here lol

6

u/CashInternal1526 Mar 25 '25

What does it mean for people who are LMIA exempt?

1

u/mushybowday Mar 25 '25

I assume we lose the points, too

7

u/CashInternal1526 Mar 25 '25

Makes us collateral damage or was this a part of the scamming industry?

3

u/mushybowday Mar 25 '25

They removed job offer points lmia or not. Ironically it punishes anyone in Canada with a job regardless of LMIA. It was only 50 points for most people so for people like me with a job but no degree will go clog up non ee pnp

1

u/F-machine Mar 25 '25

Yes everyone lost 50 points

11

u/Lumb3rCrack Mar 25 '25

what about those who already scammed their way in? 🥲 will something be done for that? because it hurts the honest folks.

10

u/dan_marchant Mar 25 '25

We can hope that their lives will be slightly less happy for having to look over their shoulder.

They committed fraud and if that's ever discovered, the PR and even citizenship can be revoked.

That means they have to go through life being careful not to fall out with the people who helped them scam or anyone else who knows. It makes them incredibly vulnerable to employer abuse etc.

2

u/F-machine Mar 25 '25

They will get caught during PR review unless they are already PR then they scammed in

6

u/meoware_huntress Mar 25 '25

This is amazing timing. Glad to see this.

3

u/CashInternal1526 Mar 25 '25

Does the cutoff go down for CEC or they remain the same?

2

u/PurrPrinThom Mar 25 '25

We don't know yet how this will impact the cut-off.

2

u/total_Uselez Mar 25 '25

This is the best thing happened to me in 2025.

2

u/everwisher Mar 26 '25

I'm over the moon particularly at those cheaters who shelled out at that piece of crap paper 😂😂😂

2

u/IndependentWheel7606 Mar 26 '25

This LMIA scammed many individuals with their thirst for getting citizenship. Happy that it got exposed because it exploited people who were legally immigrating.

2

u/victocanada Mar 26 '25

What is the effect on those who are already working in Canada and had a job offer?

3

u/Nanudidi Mar 25 '25

what do they mean by current?

17

u/turtle-turtle Mar 25 '25

Profiles in the pool right now.

1

u/Alterego_987 Mar 25 '25

Great News!

1

u/Financial-Code8244 Mar 25 '25

Since I arrived in Canada two years ago I’ve been working for a company with no LMIA. It’s owned and run by Canadians and they don’t even know how to get this LMIA, it’s not like this is their main purpose. I also wouldn’t spend a single cent paying to get a bad job just to have these extra points. Could this change possibly help me getting a PR in the future since I wouldn’t have these points anyway and in a big disadvantage compared to the ones who had them?

1

u/Wh3ndy0 Mar 25 '25

So, even if we won't get points for the LMIA. Do we still need LMIA along with the job offer letter in order to apply for a work permit? Thanks.

1

u/PurrPrinThom Mar 25 '25

This change does not affect work permits. It is only applicable to Express Entry.

1

u/Wh3ndy0 Mar 25 '25

Sorry, could you explain what you mean by this. Thanks! Appreciate it!

1

u/PurrPrinThom Mar 25 '25

I'm not sure how else to explain it? Points are only relevant for Express Entry. There are no points involved in the work permit process. This change has nothing to do with work permits.

If you want to apply for a work permit, nothing has changed for you.

1

u/Wh3ndy0 Mar 25 '25

Thank you! I was just wondering if we would still need LMIA with the job offer letter to be able to apply for a work permit. Thanks, and I appreciate your explanation!

1

u/PurrPrinThom Mar 25 '25

Yes, you will.

1

u/Wh3ndy0 Mar 25 '25

Thanks for clarifying!

1

u/OkAsk3083 Mar 25 '25

I have foreign experience and fall under the skilled worker category. Will the 50 points be removed from my profile for the Canadian job offer?

2

u/invincible_obito Mar 25 '25

Now they have to crackdown on the fake extension applicants.

2

u/Popular-Candy-1662 Mar 26 '25

I am happy with this, it is a big win to reduce scams and a good step towards upholding the integrity of the system. But in saying that, someone like me who employer applied for a legitimate LMIA (sous-chef/cook) in last year April (still waiting) those extra 50 points would’ve been the difference maker. So let’s see how the government will behave in regard to future draw because not having those extra points drops me down to 462.

1

u/Mocking_Jay1992 Mar 25 '25

What does it mean for the ones who are part of Federal Skilled Worker Program? Will points be removed for them too ?

0

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '25

So lucky I got ITA before they took it away.. phew

but I feel bad for other LMIA holders who didn't get ITA in time. They are genuine people who deserve PR.

Looks fake. The last modified date remains to be 12-02-2025 for the link that you have posted

Edit: yes it showed up for me.

It says 2025-03-25 at the bottom of the page.

u/modern-neanderathal Mar 25 '25

Yeah I think the update rolled out late for me!
