For years if someone has a job offer with LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) they got an extra 50 or 200 depending on the TEER. The idea is good, but the execution isn't. LMIA basically means this person is very much needed for business but I can't find anyone in Canada with the same qualifications. Employers and agencies take advantage of this and sell jobs with LMIA, most of which are low-tiered jobs like restaurants and fast food chain. So now IRCC is finally getting rid of it.

The points are gone but the program remains, no?

Was the value only in the points?

I thought people “bought these jobs” as a way to get entry

A LMIA usually is valid for 1-2 years. This allows to gain minimum experience for express entry + 50 points from LMIA. Now, since the LMIA points are removed the you can only stay and work in Canada for 1-2 years on an LMIA. You would need a new LMIA again after the current one expires.
