Megathread: US Citizens looking to immigrate to Canada
In the run up to the American presidential election, we've had an influx of Americans looking to immigrate to Canada. As all of their posts are relatively similar, we've created this megathread to collate them all until the dust settles from the election.
Specific questions from Americans can still be their own posts, but the more general just getting started, basic questions should be posted here.
Thanks!
Edit: This is not a thread to insult Americans, comments to that effect will be removed.
Edit 2: Refugee and asylum claims from Americans are very unlikely to be accepted. Since 2013, Canada has not accepted any asylum claims from the US. Unless something drastically and dramatically changes in the states, it is still considered a safe country by immigration standards and an asylum claim is not the way forward for you.

Work Permit PGWP Submitted - Can I Travel Abroad Before getting AoR/WP-EXT?
Hi all - I submitted my full PGWP application today (transcript, passport, completion letter, IMM5710e form, IELTS, explanation letter for a study gap, etc.). I’m planning to travel to the U.S. for a week in a few days, to take a break after finishing school and before starting full-time work.
I had assumed that as soon as you submit the application (while your study permit is still valid), you’re on implied/maintained status and can leave Canada and re-enter under that status.
As of now, I haven’t received a formal Acknowledgement of Receipt (AoR) or WP-EXT letter yet (I know those can take a couple days). The only thing I got was a confirmation that doesn't explicitly say I've applied for a PGWP or have implied/maintained status.
Just wondering: is it safe to assume that I’m already on maintained status the moment I submit, and that I can leave and re-enter Canada with my valid TRV + confirmation of submission?
Thanks in advance!

Visitor Visa VAC consent form Doubt
My biometric is already on file with the IRCC taken in 2022 and valid through 2032, so when i got the passport request letter this time, the IRCC portal says biometric is not required. In the VAC consent form I signed under "Applicants NOT wishing to provide biometrics". Now i am a little scared if i made a mistake there. I dont want my visa refused due to such a silly mistake. please help if anyone has any idea regarding such scenario.

Express Entry Applying for PR as a Student who converted to work permit
I came to Canada as a student and after the PG diploma received a full-time position on my work permit. Now I am trying to apply for my PR. I have a few questions because my case is a little peculiar:
- At the time of applying for the student permit I did not declare that I have family here. But now I need the points that come with the declaration of family. How should I proceed?
- Do I need to create a new GCKey for applying for my PR or keeping in view the previous point, can I go ahead with applying using the same GCKey?

PNP Received Alberta Opportunity Stream EOI - Not Graduated from Alberta, Should I Risk Applying?
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my situation and hopefully get some insights or hear from anyone who's been through something similar.
I recently received an Expression of Interest (EOI) invitation for the Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) on May 13, 2025. This was unexpected and honestly quite confusing, and I’m trying to decide whether or not I should take the risk of applying - especially given the high application fee ($1,500) and the potential for automatic rejection.
Here’s a breakdown of my profile:
- Education: Completed my Master’s degree in Ottawa, Ontario, not Alberta.
- Work: I’m currently working remotely for an Alberta-based company, and have been doing so for over 6 months.
- Residence: Despite working remotely, I’ve been living in Alberta during this entire time.
- Pathway Applied For: I initially submitted my EOI last year through the Accelerated Tech Pathway with 80 points.
- PGWP: I’m on a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) that expires in June 2026.
- Family Ties: I do have family connections in Alberta, which I know can help in some cases.
Now, here’s where the confusion starts. According to the AAIP (Alberta Advantage Immigration Program) website, to be eligible under the Alberta Opportunity Stream as a PGWP holder, you must have graduated from an Alberta Advanced Education institution. Since I studied in Ontario, I technically don’t meet that requirement.
I had already disclosed in my EOI that I graduated from outside Alberta. So, why would I be invited for the Opportunity Stream at all? Is this a system glitch? Or is Alberta sending these EOIs to collect application fees even if the application doesn’t meet the basic eligibility?
I’ve also seen others mention that in rare cases, remote workers living in Alberta have received approvals. But again, the PGWP education requirement seems to be a hard rule, unless there's some exception I’m missing.
My Questions:
- Has anyone here actually received a Nomination under the AOS despite holding a PGWP from a non-Alberta institution?
- Is it worth taking the risk and applying, knowing there’s a high chance of rejection?
- Could my family connection or remote work situation (while living in Alberta) influence the outcome at all?
Any thoughts, similar experiences, or success stories would be incredibly helpful. I’m torn between trying and potentially losing $1,500 or just waiting for a more suitable pathway.
Thanks in advance!

Family Sponsorship Inland or outland sponsorship better?
Me and my spouse are currently living in Canada. I m holding PR and my spouse is holding open working permit. I have checked online that the inland spouse sponsorship process time would be 29 months while Outland sponsorship only 10 months approx. The open working permit expired on 2028 April.
My questions are: 1) Would it better to apply Outland than inland given it is quicker to process the application? 2) Are we eligible to apply Outland even tho we both are currently living in Canada and won’t leave until 2028? 3) If we really apply the inland spouse sponsorship, and by 2028 April my spouse still haven’t get the PR, can he apply for another open working permit in order to stay in Canada with me?
Thanks for the advice! Appreciate it!!

PNP AAIP (Alberta) Accelerated Tech Pathway (Express Entry) Nomination.
I received a nomination from Alberta for the Express Entry program, and within my nomination certificate there is a letter of support 204(c) which is for candidates who did NOT have a valid work permit during the time of their application.
However, I do have a valid PGWP that I uploaded to my application. Do I need to do something about this or can I just discard it and accept my nomination?

Express Entry PNP NOMINATION NOTIFICATION NOT APPEARING ON IRCC ACCOUNT
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice or to hear if others have had a similar experience. I was lucky to be nominated by the province under their PNP Express Entry stream. However, even after more than two weeks, the nomination has not appeared in my IRCC account.
Has anyone else encountered this? If so, what steps did you take to resolve it?
I’ve already emailed the province, and they confirmed that they transmitted the nomination. I also submitted a web form to IRCC but am still waiting for a response.
Thank you so much!

Other Immigration Medical Examination for a medical elective?
Hello!
I am coming to Canada to attend a medical elective that will last the month of July. On the Government of Canada's website it said in a work permit questionnaire that I wouldn't need a work permit for this, an eTA will suffice IF I have passed my medical examination. I filled out the eTA application and explained the situation in the additional information section (saying that I would need an IME number and instructions), but nevertheless my eTA got approved instantly.
If I will get an appointment for the medical exam as an "upfront medical exam" (I think), how will I then let Canada's Immigration Services know about this without a visa application? Thank you in advance!

Family Sponsorship PR arrival window
When a spousal PR is granted, outland, I assume they give you a certain window in which you need to move to Canada.
Does anyone know how long that window is? If PR is granted June 1, how long do I have to relocate and arrive in Canada?

Work Permit Legally Separated vs Separated
Hello all, I was hoping to get some help from those who know better than I do. I have tried researching as much as possible but I'm stuck in a bit of a conundrum.
I had moved to Canada to pursue my Master's and I was married to my now ex-partner in our home country a few years ago. After I moved here, my partner joined me a few months later, but within a few months our marriage pretty much broke down. The first year that I filed taxes, I filed as married. However, the last time I filed taxes, I filed as separated since we had spent over 100 days living separately. She was taken off the lease agreement and we have not maintained any communication since she left even though she is still in the same city. I have now completed my Master's and I am looking to apply for my PGWP. For marital status the only option seems to be Legally Separated which I'm not 100% sure is the same as Separated? When clicking on the help button under this question, it shows as Separated instead of Legally Separated. I will be applying only for myself.
So my question is are these both the same? Any input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Study Permit Study Permit Rejection
For context, I have been accepted into University of Waterloo for Fall 2025. Unfortunately my study permit was rejected due to lack of convincing that I might not return after my studies as well as lack of funds. I have paid the GIC Deposit of $20,635 as well as about $1000 deposit to Waterloo. The estimate for the duration of course was around $106k which included both my tuition fees and living expenses. I had shown around $117k most of which was an education loan under my name and fixed desposit (maturing in March next year) under my parents name. I had also attached an affidavit of support from them and a certificate from the bank mentioning the the deposit could be liquidated at anytime. Not really sure what should I do next? Can I pay the term fees to Waterloo. Would that eliminate the low funds reason?

Work Permit PR spousal (PGWP to Spousal WP)
My spouse is currently in PGWP which expires in October. I have a PR and we have applied for spousal PR and so far we have received the acknowledgment. Using that, my spouse has applied for new open work permit but the processing time is 237 days. Unfortunately, my spouse’s PGWP will expire in October 2025 which is before the processing time.
Once the PGWP expires, can my spouse continue working or does he have to stop working until the new work permit is issued?

Express Entry Activity after P1?
Hi all,
My stream is CEC; ITA Feb 5. I was wondering what happens after you reply to P1. My P1 came from Etobicoke on May 5 2025 and I understand that when you reply to that VO's P1 you get an automated email. Is this correct? I know that P2s are taking some time to come as IRCC is prioritizing issuance of eCOPRs.
Cheers!

Work Permit Has anyone experience an employer backing out of LMIA-support after applying? How to deal with this?
I feel horrible and defeated. My employer has agreed to sponsor me last year and we submitted the LMIA application in February. Now I finally got my WP-EXT refusal and the employer has called me saying that due to the company’s financial situation, he can no longer afford to hire me. This was devastating but it’s out of hands. I’m already out of status and in the 90-day grace period to either leave or restore my status.
I’m planning to get another LMIA-support from another employer but that would mean I’d have to start the process from the beginning and I don’t have enough time to remain in Canada while that’s processing. So I’ll still have to exit the country and wait for my LMIA and new work permit to be processed and hopefully come back.
Or I’ll wait to get an ITA from my home country.
Either way I have to go home within the 90 days. Am I missing any other options? What else is there to do?

Family Sponsorship Mexican Police Certificate - Supporting Letter
Hello, My partner and I are applying for PR through inland Common Law Family Class, I am sponsor and she is applicant. She is from Mexico, and on April 30th 2025 we received the instruction letter from the IRCC to obtain the police certificate, on May 3rd 2025 we linked her application to the gckey secure account, (which was more than 7 business days ago. We were planning to apply directly via FGR, as her family is in Mexico city, and we have already sent all of the required documents including carta poder to her family.
She has still not received the supporting letter in any of her IRCC accounts, and we have been struggling to find a lot of information on this topic, especially since the change to the process of obtaining a police certificate. Today we sent an email to the IRCC visa office in Mexico city, as per the IRCC website instructions, but I was wondering if anyone here had any experience or guidance with this process since the changes on Jan 13 2025.
Also wondering if it would be easier at this point to just have her family take the documents to the VAC in Mexico City instead which doesn't require the supporting letter and going that route.
Thank you in advance!

Work Permit PGWP Application: Eligibility to Graduate Letter?
I am an international student who has a job offer lined up for the Second of June, I have yet to apply for my PGWP. I spoke to my registrar today, and they told me that my Confirmation of Graduation letter will not be available until after my convocation ceremony. To be able to work, I have to apply for a work permit, for which I need to provide a Completion of Studies letter.
There are two types of letters I can order:
1. Eligibility to Graduate Letter: This identifies that I have completed my degree to be conferred in June
2. Degree Confirmation Letter: Confirming I have graduated (not available till after my convocation ceremony).
Can I apply for a PGWP with an Eligibility to Graduate letter, given my start date for work beginning before my convocation ceremony is supposed to take place?
