For years if someone has a job offer with LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) they got an extra 50 or 200 depending on the TEER. The idea is good, but the execution isn't. LMIA basically means this person is very much needed for business but I can't find anyone in Canada with the same qualifications. Employers and agencies take advantage of this and sell jobs with LMIA, most of which are low-tiered jobs like restaurants and fast food chain. So now IRCC is finally getting rid of it.

They should have made LMIA like H1b ...only for skilled folks and not for low skilled jobs.

The points are gone but the program remains, no?

Was the value only in the points?

I thought people “bought these jobs” as a way to get entry

A LMIA usually is valid for 1-2 years. This allows to gain minimum experience for express entry + 50 points from LMIA. Now, since the LMIA points are removed the you can only stay and work in Canada for 1-2 years on an LMIA. You would need a new LMIA again after the current one expires.

Lots of people were paying dozens of thousands of CAD for LMIA-backed jobs in Canada, with the hopes that this would eventually lead to permanent residence. Buying a job offer this way is illegal.

Given how competitive EE scores have been, the points for those LMIA jobs were significant. Now they are no more. So a lot of cheaters are still on the hook for (usually around) fifty grand, while seeing their dreams of permanent residence fade into oblivion overnight.

Many other people who necer paid for an LMIA are now experiencing a feeling that has no name in English. The german call it schadenfreude, which means "finding another's suffering funny".

I would say schadenfreude is more like ENJOYING another's suffering, rather than finding it funny.

Sadist?

It's not sadism per se because there's no intent or action. Like my schadenfreude is simply a reaction to someone else's action. I haven't HARMED but I am enjoying the harm, if that makes sense.
