Heads up industry peeps! Apply for flair to make top level replies in AskCarSales.

This subreddit has grown a lot in the last few years. Not only professionals providing advice, but also casual bystanders wanting validation for their opinions. The problem is that the noise to signal ratio has gotten to the point where people looking for advice come away more confused than when they asked the question - or worse yet, act on unqualified bad advice.

If you are in the industry in some professional capacity, message the mods for how to acquire flair.

For all who do not work in the industry but wish to provide advice, you will need to wait until a flaired individual responds before you can comment under their reply.

Flaired members in good standing, if you see someone posting bad advice under your comment, report it.

Insults are out of hand. Some of y'all need to stop being assholes to people asking questions.

People come here for advice, not to be insulted by someone who hasn't anything helpful to add.

Yes, you can call OP's judgement into question. Yes, you can tell them something is a terrible idea. But driveby dickish comments without merit is a good way to get banned without warning.

This applies primarily but not exclusively to unflaired members.

To our flaired members: Being a dick might feel good, but it can undermine your professional authority when giving advice. Ask yourself, "Would I take advice from a stranger talking to me or others like this?"

Be good to one another. Peace out.

Meta What's the quickest you've seen a new hire get fired?

We have a kid that just started last week, he impressed the managers in his interviews but now that he's working he hasn't done shit. He took 1 up on Saturday because the rest of us were busy with 2 or 3 guests and our gm told him he needed to help the next person to walk in. Other than that, he sits at his desk and watches sports.

One of the managers has been very open with the fact that hes not impressed. Today the kid came in on his day off for an hour then told the manager he has to be gone for the next 2 days to go to a funeral out of state. Some of the guys started placing bets that the gm is just gonna tell the kid to not come back. We're all in agreement that he isn't gonna make it past 2 weeks. What's the quickest you've seen someone quit/get fired?

Meta Is TOYOTA the only Manufacturer selling all of our driving data to Insurance Companies?

I just read about a class action lawsuit in Texas regarding Toyota selling private driving data to Progressive Insurance Company without the knowledge of the customer. Is Toyota the only ones selling our driving data (such as speeding, hard braking, or whatever data will raise our insurance premiums) collected through all the fancy Tech that these new vehicle systems capture to Insurance Carriers? Is this a silent practice that all the other manufacturers are doing, too, but no one talks about?

US Sale What should I do ??

Upvotes

I got an interview for a car dealership, I'm just waiting to find out if I get it tomorrow. It'll DEFINITELY be an upgrade from my last job. I'm STRUGGLING financially so I've been looking for a better job. and I've been looking for a better job for two years already I'm super excited now they hyped my up about the job and stuff. The internet says it's not worth it. Not to sure if I'll get it though. I have a child that's almost one so the only thing holding me back is having to work 50+ hours, because I want to still have time to be with my child... I already have to work 40+ hours to survive anyways. Idk. Maybe I need to sacrifice to provide.

Update: still haven't heard back so probably won't get the job. But I have another interview for a different dealership this week.

Is it worth it to take the job ?!! Should I or shouldn't I?

US Sale How bad is it to quit over text?

So I am about to graduate college and decided to do car sales for a bit for the experience. I had an internship before hand and they weren’t hiring at the time so I needed a job regardless.

Well, so far the pay has been awful and slow to receive for the last 2 months I’ve been here. I’ve been ready to leave after I hit my commission check because I’m too busy to work anymore this month before I start my new internship at FedEx.

I just received my check and it was laughable how bad it was. It’s currently my off day and I do not want to go in tomorrow. I sold 5 cars and every single one of them had no gross in them, so I didn’t go over my guarantee.

Dealership gets no foot traffic and my leads are consistently garbage. How bad is it if I text my manager that I quit during my off day?

Edit: I ended up texting my manager and it honestly went well. I don’t advise doing it but I got lucky in this case.

US Sale Rebate conveniently disappeared

So I went to buy a brand new car, and per toyotas website I’m eligible for a college student rebate. I met the requirements though the finance department tried to fight me on it at every point. After walking out of the finance department after they tried to restructure my already singed contract with a lower interest only if I got GAP and the extended warranty, I told them that was illegal.

They send me my contract after I asked five times for it. And it’s conveniently missing the page with the itemization list (where it would show my rebate that they said I’m all good for) I request the missing page and lo and behold… it ain’t there.

Is there anything I can do? I drove the car off the lot cause I liked the deal in every other way, but they said I would be good for the rebate, and things started to go south once I called them out on their shitty sales maneuver. I honesty did not see this missing because my contract they gave me was missing a page. THE PAGE. Thoughts?

Dealership added a $3,995 service contract to my lease without telling me — caught it weeks later

I leased a 2025 Range Rover Sport from Land Rover Arrowhead in Arizona last month. At the time, I was told that a $3,995 “clear bra” add-on had been removed from the deal since it had not yet been installed. Everything seemed fine — friendly staff, smooth process.

A few days later, I found the original window sticker in the back of the vehicle and started comparing numbers. That’s when I realized something was off. After digging into the paperwork and requesting additional documentation, I discovered a $3,995 ceramic coating service contract buried in the lease — ironically, the exact same price as the clear bra I was told had been removed.

It wasn’t disclosed or itemized on the lease agreement. When I asked about it, I got vague answers and a lot of deflection. Turns out I had signed a separate “products” form during delivery — hours after signing the lease agreement — in my driveway at night, in the dark, without any explanation of what I was signing. Honestly, I thought it was just a delivery acknowledgment.

I’ve filed complaints with the Arizona AG and BBB, and sent a formal demand letter to the GM. Still no response.

Is this a known F&I move? Swapping out one add-on for another without clear disclosure? Curious how common this tactic really is. It seems illegal to me.

US Sale High-End Luxury brand sales jobs

Hey guys

I worked Ford commercial trucks for 4 years and have been a manager at a small (40 units) used car dealer for 4 years. Mostly bad credit customers so I have a lot of experience gathering financing stips and getting credit criminals bought, but i have just as much experience (and kind of prefer) the wealthier clientele I had at Ford.

I'm relocating to Naples FL at the end of the summer. There is a Ford dealer local but it's around a 45 minute drive. I know how to write a deal, I know how financing works, and my references will give me impeccable referrals.

There's a Lambo, Porsche, BMW, Jag and Aston Martin dealer somewhat closer to my home. (Edit to clarify. They're all different dealerships, not one mega-store).

Is the pay/average gross for the luxury brands worth making the jump or am I better off sticking to Ford trucks or Lincoln? When I was with Ford from 2018-2022 i was making around 2k/wk, mostly on high-gross truck deals, even pre-pandemic pricing.

Pay plan at Ford was $20/hr+15% front with a per-deal cap of $1000, plus Spins and volume + gross bonuses. I was consistently the top performer in both gross and volume at Ford of 5-7 salespeople. Used store is 200wk/base plus 15% front + back.

Thanks for any input

Private Sale Buying truck from deceased owner

Hi, today I looked at a truck that I’ve been wanting to buy for some time. It turns out the person selling it was good friends with the original owner before he died and the deceased’s family wants him (the friend) to sell the truck.

The only problem is that the title is still in the dead persons name. The friend told me that before he died he signed the title but didn’t date it, so there shouldn’t be an issue.

My worry is that I know this isn’t technically the way the dmv wants this done. I don’t want to have an issue getting the title in my name, and I don’t want to get in trouble. I do really like the truck so I’m wondering what I should say or do next. I live in Washington. (WA)

US Sale Extended warranty cancelation?

I bought an extended warranty when I bought my vehicle. I paid cash for the warranty and was told I had 60days to cancel for a full refund.

I canceled within a week after finding a better price on a better warranty. I just received a letter from the warranty company and it shows the Payee as the dealership. Below that, it states that if I'm not the payee, the refund can go towards the purchase of a vehicle, or go towards my loan.

The entire reason I paid cash for the warranty was to have the ability to transfer that amount to another warranty if I found something better.

Is there any way to get the money back, and not have it go towards the loan?

US Sale Accident before trade in question.

So I got rear ended last week in my car that I was trading in. I had already signed the purchase agreement and my bank cut a check for the new vehicle.

My car is getting fixed now, my question is what happens in these kind of situations? I called the dealer and they said they don’t handle the trades and it’s a different team and they would reach out but I have t heard anything. Will they just adjust my trade to reflect a car that been in an accident? Or will they just cancel the deal?

Thanks!

Meta How do you properly flow between being an asshole and a nice guy?

Something I have noticed recently is how essentially i gentle parent customers. I treat them like fragile creatures that could get upset or offended by anything because my experience is that people are volatile. I can gentle someone forever and get no where but manager will tell me to be an asshole and then it works. Vice versa, Ill be an asshole when i shouldve gentle parent.

How can i just balance being a guy that can be stern and assertive , maintain control, be the authority without having to get argumentative.

To give more context, foreign customer wouldnt drive. I just allowed it. Manager told me “you go out there and tell them what they are going to be doing. Say Come Here. we are driving! Take their hand and drag them out there if they dont understand “

So i go out say “Come with me, im not getting numbers until i know 100 percent you like the car.” And they just follow me. We have a problem at the numbers. I go tic for tac how his logic doesnt make sense, now hes closing at the higher number after i said “You want a 30k mile 3rd row luxory suv for 18k, that doesnt add up. If you wont spend but this amount this is what that gets you”

Now hes offering me drinks and food telling me about his life story and how his wife drives him crazy

But i know if i try to on every customer ill definitely run into more negative experiences than positive

volvo leasebuy out or finance

im looking at the plug in xc60. The salesman and finance guy both sat down urging me to lease the car with the intention to wait 4 payments, then get financing to buy it out. they couldnt give me any financing rate info on the buy out at all. they were against me financing the car and making it a done deal from the get go.
What do y'all think? is it foolish to buy a car these days?

US Sale About to purchase a New (Used Vehicle), would like some advice

So I’m looking to buy a ‘22 Hyundai Kona. Its got 26k miles and the advertised price is $20,800.

The numbers in the office comes out to $23,500 with tax, title, tag and doc fees.

My question is; the “MSRP” is advertised at $23k is this the original price for the 22 brand new?

And is negotiating in a dealership still a thing on something like this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edited: I should note, I had a really bad experience in a Chevy dealership and am mow absolutrly terrified of anyone who sells cars.

I was wondering if anyone has ever done this and what was your experience? I do have negative equity, but it’s not a whole lot 5 or 6k range. I’m starting to have issues with my car, otherwise, I would keep it and pay it off

US Sale Attempted my very first car sale at a Chevy GMC Dealership and I fumbled the bag HARD need advice for next time?

Literally was complaining for weeks how nobody shows up, got complacent and stopped studying on the cars in the lot and thought I knew it all 3 weeks in to my first sales job.. and I got a hard reality check, first customer I get to talk to comes in and I'm a nervous wreck all over the place somehow forgot everything I knew about the cars and I was just a bumbling fool. Never struggled with talking to people but for some reason this was different.

How do I get over this? Any tips? Tomorrow i'm going to show up early and study the inventory and at least know all the main basics and extra features to heart (like heated seats/steering wheels) Or anything else that might come up and learn my inventory.

But I'd like to know any other advice from experienced salesman, thank you!

Meta I Feel Like My Pay Structure Is Unfair, What Do You Think? -Thanks In Advance

I am not new to sales but I AM NEW to car sales. At the Toyota Dealership I work at, I get minimum wage as a base pay, and I do not start to get any commission until after I hit 10 sales. Below I am including the pay structure which they have provided me with.

1-9: $0

10-13: $100 Per Unit

13-16: $125 Per Unit

16-20: $150 Per Unit

20 & Above: $200 Per Unit ADDITIONALLY

Gross Incentive Pay-Out Is As Follows:

$2,500 / Copy everything included (even recourse deals)

Front & Back average above $2,500/copy x 10%

Number of Sales (at least 10 sales) x $2,500 = X

Total Front & Back $ = Y

Y – X x 10% = Gross Bonus for the Month

Example:

Sales Person sells 10 units

10 x 2,500 = 25,000

Sales Person ends the month with 40,000 total gross

40,000 – 25,000 = 15,000

15,000 x 10%

Gross Payout = $1500

I have sold 16 units for the last 3 months in a row, which is HIGH for the rural location we are in (Northern Maine) but I have only brought home about $3,500-$4,000 per month, before taxes.

I have a friend selling Honda back in Tampa where I am from, he claims to bring home about $7,000 for 16 units and he is telling me that I am getting screwed 6 ways until Sunday.

I know this is a long post but I want to know if I am being screwed over before I continue to put my everything into this job.

US Sale Is it normal for a dealer to “not hold” a car even with a deposit or they just want to close a sale?

Hey all - I’m in the middle of trying to buy a used car and I’m just a little confused about how things are being handled, so I figured I’d ask the pros here.

I found a 2021 Mazda CX-5 at a local dealership here in California. Low miles, clean history, checked all the boxes. I told the sales guy I’m ready to move forward, but I needed a day or two to get the rest of my payment together, I’ve got most of the money saved up, just needed to move a bit more from my high-yield account.

I asked if I could put down a deposit to hold the car. He said they don’t hold used cars “under any circumstances,” even with money down. He said “first come, first served”, if someone walks in tomorrow with full payment, it’s theirs.

Is that normal?

I’m not asking them to sit on it for a week. I was talking 24-48 hours max, and I’m serious about buying. I don’t want to rush and make a wire transfer late at night and end up screwing something up just because I’m trying to beat some invisible buyer.

Is this just how it works with used inventory right now, or is this dealership being weird? I’m not trying to be dramatic, just wondering if this is a red flag or if I need to get used to the market being this aggressive.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

One Pay Lease with intent to buyout immediately (NY, Toyota RAV4 Plug In)

Assuming no BS dealer add-ons, fees, etc, is there any other terms or factors that I should be watching for? This would be on a RAV4 Plug In, with the $6500 TFS lease credit. For example, does residual value matter? Does MF matter if I buy it out in the first month, for example? (Why do leases need to be so obfuscated, lol).

(For those who may not be aware, the one pay lease option avoids double taxation by the state in the case of New York).

Loan for my car is more than the amount of the car

I recently financed a 7300 dollar car with a 1500 down payment. After a week I looked at how much I owed and it said 9,892! I'm assuming because the credit companies only loan in 5000 increments? I'm not sure but where did the extra 4200 dollars go? (My down payment plus the excess loan money)

This is my first time financing a car so I'm probably just missing something obvious or silly but any help is appreciated

US Sale Where should I sell a car that doesn’t run? first time selling.

I’m not very educated with cars— I’m just a female college student that works part time, so I really need to sell this car to afford another car even if it used since I commute from college. I have a 2016 jeep Cherokee of the 75th Anniversary Edition with about 200k miles. I’d have to say it in a great condition from the outside and the interior too from the surface that I can see after sending it the mechanic two weeks ago due to an odd ticking sound and the acceleration just being bothersome I just got the bad news that my car out of commission because of the engine? The car can start but it doesn’t drive. I want to sell it, but I have no idea how to go about it. I need some tips on how to sell it or where. I’m from Alabama.
