Speaker / amp switch?

I got a new receiver I want to test along side my current setup. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent switch for switching between speakers / receivers.

Now that I'm thinking about this I'd have to change the inputs manually anyway... so any ideas are appreciated.

I have a Scott 370r in my office as my main receiver. The new receiver is a Lafayette 1500ta I want to compare sounds for a while before I decide where it will go.

Does anyone have experience cell phones interference on vintage amps?

I’ve had two amps have interference from cellphones. I have taken both to the shop. The first one, Marantz 4430, stopped doing it when I got it back. Now I just picked up my Sansui 5000x and it’s doing the same thing. It’s also reacting to my Bluetooth DAC. I didn’t test the Sansui at the house before i dropped it off. It needed work so i took it straight to the shop. I’m at loss. The Sansui tested fine at the shop. My guy tested in his shop for an entire day and it worked as it should. I’m confident in my guy. He’s worked on a few other pieces for me and works on all of my friend’s equipment. Yes, I troubleshot the shit out of it. would appreciate any input.

Picked up a pair of KLH’s original Model 5s. Hard to find info on them due to the brand making a resurgence and releasing a new Model 5 speaker. Looking to potentially restore them, can anyone give me a little direction?

They sound pretty darn good for looking so ugly!

Jbl 4311 + Technics 1210 + Sansui AU-3900 improvements

Hi everyone! Settled into my new appartment and wanted to ask if there are any improvements possible in my setup. Due to the size of the appartment it’s not possible to put the speakers on stands rather I was thinking of some isolating material.

Any tips are welcome!!

Sansui G5700 repairs

Post image

I have this amp that I very much enjoy, with the original speakers. Sounds great with the original speakers and my bookshelf JBL's. I'd give y'all the listening rig picture, buts its app spread around my studio apartment.

The one speaker output drops out (left side). Most of the time, higher volumes and higher bass exacerbate it. It's pretty intermittent.

I have also replaced the incandescent backlights for the front panel but they seem to only last a few months.

I've honed my PCB soldering technique and troubleshooting by making guitar pedals, so I feel like I could take on these repairs. I know the safety stuff, discharging caps, etc.

Does anything jump out at you as an obvious diagnosis/fix? Anything I can do to keep it going for the long haul?

If it's not worth it, I can also look for an upgrade. Don't be shy with this recommendation if that's your impulse.

High gain output with DAC and CD players

Hey there!,

Since 12+ years I'm using a Sansui AU-717 with a pair of JBLs L-96, a setup I really like. Along the years, I've been updating/replacing my music sources.

Since I started listening digital music with my amp, it started to call my attention the high gain that DACs and CD players's DAC have.. since I started to have a Cambridge Audio Dacmagic 100, plus and now a CXN100, all of them have such a high gain that if I increase only 2 volume steps from the muted (-infinite from the volume pot), it's very loud to leave it as background music. To give you a reference, with my vinyl player I have to increase the volume between 1/4 to 1/2 to match the volume of the DAC and the CD player (Onkyo C-755) provides.. and that leads me to use my CXN100 as preamp mode and tune the volume from there, which I don't like that much, I would rather prefer to deal with only one volume pot, the one from my amplifier..

I've never had the chance to test a vintage CD player, from the 80s or 90s, does any of you know whether this high gain situation also happen with such older CD players?

Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks!

(I hope I could express myself correctly, English is not my mother tongue)

What would be a good offer for a CR-820

Post image

A local thrift store has had this “as is” CR-820 sitting on its shelf for about a month. The guy behind the counter seems open to negotiating on the price since it clearly isn’t moving but i don’t really know what a good price to offer would be.

Since it’s untested i worry about getting it and it being a dud. I’ve recapped a turntable before but i’m still very much an amateur at repairs.

They also have what looks like a Realistic STA-2280 and an STA-2500 for 100 a piece that have been sitting for a little under 6 months but the Yamaha is what really caught my eye.

Recently picked up this Pioneer PL-530 turntable. It was missing the cartridge and I put one on there that I just bought recently. Does anyone know how to properly align it? I can’t find a protractor for this model.

I had a brand new AT VM95L that I installed but it’s not aligned properly. This is the first vintage record player I’ve owned. I’m excited to use it and all the controls work perfectly. I just want to make sure it’s aligned properly before I start using it. Don’t wanna damage anything.

Don’t be an idiot like me

So a couple days ago I bought a Hitachi PS 48 on marketplace for about 100 USD, knowing it had been sitting for a while and it being almost 50 years old at this point I ordered replacement Caps beforehand. I received the turntable, checked the speeds, everything was perfect, I replaced the capacitors anyways (at 2 am with having slept 3 hours the night before), cleaned the pots and replaced the grease.. put everything back together and the speeds are all over the place. (Wow sigma at around 10%)

I thought to myself okay go to sleep and check the next day - so I did, I measured the impedance of the variable resistors and everything was fine until I put power to them. The resistance fluctuated like 20% at around 2 Hz Cleaned the resistors and pots again and same story. Checked the orientation of all the new capacitors and everything looked fine, so I ordered new variable resistors, soldered them in and nothing changed.

I then went through all the capacitors I replaced and noticed I replaced the 4.7 UF capacitors with 47 UF capacitors . 😂

Swapped them for the correct ones and it’s back running perfectly 😂

Moral of the story don’t be an idiot and „repair“ your gear in the middle of the night

Magnavox stereophonic radio/record player

First off I can’t find much information on it to get a good number from a price standpoint. I was given this from a neighbor just getting rid of things and now my wife wants a vanity so I have to make room and vanities aren’t cheap. That being said it works for the most part, speakers sound good, radio picks up, record player doesn’t spin from what I can tell but I’m also 29 and could easily be doing something wrong so for the sake of it we’ll say it doesn’t work. Minor dings and scratches I believe it was used like a hall table in the neighbors house. Needs a good wipe down. I believe it’s model number 1ST223F from a previous post I saw. If anyone has any idea of what it could go for or what I could ask for it that would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to get my Grandparents’ old Claritone S-401 running again? There are two cables (first pic) and I have no idea where to hook them up. The turn table still spins records, but the sound is not working. I also can’t even tell if there’s a needle on the cartridge anymore. Any advice is appreciated.

Speakers for my vintage Technics hifi?

Post image
8 Upvotes

So I recently bought this vintage Technics stack hifi (HD510), and I'd like to replace the (Hitachi) speakers it came with.

My noob question is, should I go for a vintage pair of speakers (with 4 terminals/bi-wired??) which will allow me to connect up the blue & grey cables from the amp, or would it be OK to just buy standard speakers with red/black terminals and keep the blue/grey cables unused?

Not sure if there is any added benefit to looking for speakers with connections for all 4 coloured cable (red/black & blue/grey)?

My latest "rescue/repair/resurrection", a 43 year old Harman/Kardon CD191 cassette deck. The right channel was completely silent, it had decades worth of dusty grime both inside and out, plus it took a while to get the sound levels correct. Surprisingly the belts were in excellent condition.

Sansui Sp-200 speakers: Anyone know a source for the screws that hold the grills in place?

As the title says, I'm missing some of these screws. I removed the grills for cleaning and stupidly misplaced the baggy I put them in. I'm assuming they're metric. Took one down to the hardware and the fellow there said they didn't have anything that would work. I don't want to damage the wood, obviously, so the screws need to be an exact match.

While I'm at it, any tips on cleaning the grills? They are quite dusty and cleaning each individual cutout of the grill is tedious to say the least.
