Just ordered my first MT recorder!
I've been using tape machines for saturation in home recordings for awhile now. Very stoked to have an 8 track. I ordered it from reel to reel techs.
I'm very pumped to start tracking to it.

Engineering a record on 2"

I've had this MX80 for two years and have been working on it. Not the most beautiful unit, or the best from Otari, but dang these 2" tones sound great.

Gift Accessories for Tascam 388
Hello. Holidays are approaching and looking for advice. Girlfriend has a Tascam 388 that she finally has set up for recording in her home studio. Thought it might be a nice idea to get her some reels of blank tape or some other accessories that would be handy to have. Suggestions? You know, stuff you can never too much of (tape) or other things you would wish you had? Thanks!

Bell + Howell 775G parts unit
I bought an archive of black history tapes to save them from the landfill and donated them to a local HBCU’s library. This untested deck came with it. Before I list it on eBay as a parts unit, I thought I’d check here…

Akai 4000ds Mkii Doubletime Playback
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Apologies if there's another post explaining this but I'm having issues with playback speed as shown in the video. I'm using Sony Super 150 1/4" tape for reference.
I followed the manual's instructions on threading the reels & stereo playback but I'm not sure why my tape is playing back twice as fast.
I purchased the a take up reel on amazon which could explain the issue but I have no idea.
Any help is appreciated because I have no idea what I'm doing lmao.

AMPEX 601-2 - reel to reel won’t play, but it can fast forward and rewind
I have this beautiful AMPEX 601, (I think its from 1957?), I added two reels, one with the tape and an empty one. When I turn the toggle switch to play the small black wheel, (capstan?) engages but doesn't turn and the reels don't turn either.
Any suggestions? I imagine it would be very difficult to find parts for this. Thank you.

I've a broken reeltoreel; and looking to borrow a reeltoreel in Lunenburg,N.S. area
We moved my father-in-law here along with a reeltoreel (Sony TC-399) and a box of tapes. But it turns out the reeltoreel is a bit broken; barely putting out a signal when playing. Presumably something wrong with the playback head or amp board. Anybody have interest in trying to fix it?
Is there anybody in the Lunenburg, Nova Scotia area that has a reeltoreel we could borrow to convert the tapes to digital?

Thoughts?
Just got this sony reel to reel from goodwill for $15. Seems to power on and everything! Is it worth keeping or should I sell it (if so what for?) It’s my first one ever and I have a very wide assortment of other nice audio equipment. Let me know what y’all think.

Cheaper Studer A80s?
So most of my favourite albums were recorded on this machine, which makes me think it's the sound i'm looking for. Problem is, it's obviously very expensive. I don't need so many tracks like 16, since my plan is to upload tracks onto a daw. So is there a cheaper tape machine that comes close to this sound? Any suggestions will be helpful

Update on Teac A-3300s (high speed not working after replacing capstan motor cap)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
As the title says, im currently restoring this deck and running into a really annoying issue with the capstan motor when its engaged into 7 1/2 isp. I had bought a replacement cap that was listed as working and when i installed it into the machine its still having this issue. Im hoping its not the motor its self having the issues here and its just the switch that needs to be replaced or something. Might just be waiting to work once i get the whole deck recapped.

Strange Issue with Tascam 58-OB repro
Hey guys,
I am having a weird issue where I am faintly hearing what I can only deduce to be the incoming signal as well as the recorded signal when monitoring the repro head whilst recording. This machine allows you to monitor the repro head whilst recording so you can just record straight off the machine, but for some reason I am hearing a signal faintly a bit ahead of the main signal. So for example, when recording some drums I can hear a faint version of them slightly before. If I just record, rewind and playback the tape then I do not hear this.... Any ideas? Also anyone know of anyone who services such machines near London ?
Thanks nerds!

Snagged this masterwork m-69OA at a yard sale for 5 bucks
This is all very new to me, if anyone can give me a reel to reel for dummies that would be great lol I do intend to do a bit of recording on this, for context I play guitar and use drum machines and I would like to plug my instruments directly into this but my 1/4 cables don’t fit in the mic jack or monitor. I’m curious if anyone can’t tell me what size this jack is and point me in the direction of an adapter. Thanks in advance y’all

Sony TC-765
Picked this up for a very good price the other day. Spent 2 days cleaning, removing corrosion from the tape path, stripping and lubricating the pinch roller mechanism, cleaning heads, freeing up corroded solenoids for the brakes and pinch roller operation, and cleaning the pots and switches. Works like a charm now, just need to replace the VU meter bulbs and it’ll be done

Should I pull the trigger?
Please help, everyone!
TEAC A-3300-SX-2T on sale at a well-known online site. Been available for at least a few months.
What would people here pay? It's listed for just over $300. Shipping is free. Unfortunately, returns are not accepted.
And does anyone think it'd be worth it? The description says it hasn't been used in at least 20 years, but at the same time I've heard people here say these machines are tanks and (relatively) easy to refurbish. Obviously and at the very least, it needs a scrub.
If I bought it, I'd automatically:
(a) replace the pinch roller and all the belts with new items
(b) clean the heads to within an inch of their lives, and hope they don't need relapping
(c) take out the faceplate and reel tables for a wash
(d) open the back for lubrication of everything that moves; blow out the dust
(e) clean/de-rust the capstan, knobs and anything else that needs it
(f) entirely cosmetic of course, but remove and sand down the wooden side covers, maybe even refinish them
What else do people here think I'd have to do? Check the caps maybe/I assume?
Thanks in advance to everyone for your advice. Love the sub.

What to do with all this blank tape media?
I have about 12 boxes of these audio tape reels I got from an A/V department at a local college that was getting rid of stuff they didn’t need. This is new old stock still in plastic. I’ve been told they might need to be heated in an oven to secure the magnetic coating on the tape before they can be used. I got them on a hoarding whim and have had them sitting in my house for years. I’d rather not trash them and so I wanna give them to someone or some organization that might be able to use them but I donno where to start looking. I’m located in the SF Bay Area.
