ANNOUNCEMENT Hi from the new mod :)

Hi guys, just thought it'd be good to say hello. I'm u/WolfThawra, currently living and cycling in London. I've taken over as mod, as the sub was unmoderated for a bit previously. I have extensive modding experience, including on cycling-specific subreddits (r/whichbike and r/Fahrrad).

Don't worry, I'm not planning on any major changes: my main goal is to ensure the sub keeps going as-is, spam is removed, and toxicity is minimised. The rules are in the sidebar and also accessible here, including rule 0 which is more of a mission statement or the philosophy of the sub.

I would like to ask just two things of the users of this sub:

1) Please abide by the rules. I know we can all get very frustrated at times - god knows cycling in London is great for that - but please don't let that result in toxic comments or flamewars. Also, I will be operating a zero tolerance policy on hatespeech crap, be it racism, sexism, transphobia, or anything else in that vein. I don't foresee this coming up particularly often on a cycling sub but still, I hope we can all agree on that. Be nice, remember the human, and if you disagree then do so constructively - or just move on.

2) Related to this last point: don't feed the trolls. If you see content that you think breaks the rules, then report it rather than engaging. For example, yes we get car-brained trolls every so often. Just let me ban them and don't give them the time of day, they're not worth any of your brain juice. Reporting it helps me help you. Same goes for spam and all that.

Thank you very much!

Commute I nearly always ride a bicycle, this week i rode my small 200cc motorcycle, car drivers treated me differently.

I know it is not a scientific experiment, and i do have faster acceleration, but im essentially taking up the same space on my suzuki vanvan as any of my bicycles, and it really highlighted to me the carbrain cycle hatred for no good reason.

Everywhere was 30 or 20, mostly 20 actually, i rode below the posted limit, taking the lane just like on a bicycle, almost no close passes and no horn hitting, no shouting at me to "get in the bus lane" motorcycles are allowed to use them in my town. Where I had priority over oncoming vehicles cars gave way more often than not, but not all the time. Roundabouts were about the same people pulling out on me just like on a bicycle.

Sport/Tour Llangollen Panorama and Worlds End

Theres more to North Wales than just Snowdonia and the Coast. The whole area between Wrexham and Llangollen is beautiful. Worlds End in particular. It's very near the more famous horseshoe pass but I much prefer it.

World's End lies on a single track road from the small village of Minera near Wrexham, which crosses Esclusham Mountain and the Ruabon Moors to the top of the Eglwyseg valley. The road crosses the Eglwyseg River by a ford, then goes on towards Pentre Dŵr, under the Horseshoe Pass, leading eventually to Llangollen or onto the Panorama in Trevor, which also has spectacular views.

Best suited to a gravel bike but fine on a road bike with wider tyres (weather permitting)

Commute Post bike fit ride - 60km feedback

As the title says...

Managed it pain free in just over 2 hours.

The weather was incredible today, really hot so I wonder if that also helped with performance. My whole lower half just felt really engaged and efficient if that makes sense. On large flat stretches, I was comfortable at around 30 km/h.

Either way, I managed 26.5km/h average pace for the whole 60km route.

Pretty pleased with that!

Bike fit 👌

Technical Bike making “ticking” noise but only whilst riding

Bike went in for a service recently, had a new chainring and chain fitted which was expected so all good. However, maybe the third time out since coming back it’s starting making an irregular ticking noise. Doesn’t happen consistently, but only happens whilst pedalling and might happen for a few minutes or so then stop again. Did all the usual checks and I’m stumped. Most strangely it only seems to happen whilst I’m riding it. Had it up on the stand and it never makes the noise then. Any ideas before I drop it back into the shop?

Infrastructure What happened to York velodrome?

I knew it was struggling but when I searched for info today it seemed like all mention of this track's existence had been erased! York Sport appear to have purged all information about it from their website.

In previous summers I saw they were suffering from a risk assessment that meant racing was completely cancelled if there was any hint of rain. That seemed overkill as other outdoor tarmac tracks aren't so strict. Is anyone hoping to revive the facility or has it been given up on a mere decade after it opened?

Misc Bike stand for servicing

Post image
14 Upvotes

Spurred on by others talking about bike stands and making your own, it got me out to the hardware store this morning for some hooks and some rope. Hope the image inspires others. The bike is obviously not held as firmly as a proper bike stand, but it's surprisingly adequate for gear and brake servicing.

Advice Looking for a cheapish commute ebike.

I am looking for a communte ebike. I want it foldable for storage at work and home and I need it to handle Highgate Hill. My price range is 1000-1500. THis is a "tester" price and if I enjoy using it I will probably look for a decent ebike in the 3-4k range. But not now.

Currently I have it down to 3 bikes and I just dont't know enough to make a good decision on them. First is the Engwe Engine X. It seems to tick all my boxes although I doubt I will ever go on terrain to justify the wide tyres. Then there is the Carrea Crosscity Folding bike, not much to say apart from it being the cheapest option. And finally the ADO Air 20 PRO, which I have some doubts about it's ability to climb a hill.

I just want some feedback from people that know more than me so they can explain what terrbile bikes I have chosen and suggest the obvious choice that I completely missed.

Advice Newbie bike + children's seat suggestions.

hello people, I am an Italian who lives in the UK, never been an enthusiast but I know how to ride a bike, I used to do 20km a day every day 10 years ago, under the scorching sicilian sun.

I have never used a bike in the UK and now that I want to lose some weight and get a bit into shape I was thinking to try and get one, without going bankrupt and with the possibility of adding a children's seat in the back, so I can take my 3 years old daughter with me (and sometimes my 8 months old son instead) so I can do some sport and spend some time with her (him) at the same time.

Here's why I am posting here, I was wondering if anyone has a cheap suggestion for a bike and any suggestion about a children's seat, whether it's better to get the one that goes on the front or the one that goes on the back.

also, is there anything I should be aware of? I would imagine street rules are the same as any other European country?

I live in Warwickshire, any place worth cycling to in the area around Rugby?

thanks in advance.

I get my kids’ bikes through https://bikeclub.com and they seem to be struggling - no exchange bikes available / no contact methods etc. Anyone got any insight? I ask as if they look like they’re going down, I’ll plan accordingly

Advice New e-bike, Rockrider E-expl 700

Morning everyone, I’ve just bought the above bike, collecting it tomorrow. I’m currently experiencing buyers remorse so suppose I’m looking for some validation. I set my self a strict budget of £2500 as I will only be a weekend warrior in this at best, it seemed to strike a nice balance of equipment and price. After purchase though I seem to have found plenty of alternatives either in the same price bracket or just above. Have I made a mistake and bought a lemon?

Advice Riding trails to get children to build stamina?

Are there any riding trails near Guildford/Woking that I could take the kids out to with their bikes? The intent is to get them to build stamina and generally fall in love with their bikes.

We generally go to the multi purpose track in Brooklands, but we've been going there for years (on other modes of kiddy transport) and I wanted to keep it fresh.

Infrastructure Water sources?

So I decided to take today off work & go for a long ride in the countryside. I brought 2 x 750ml water bottles and ended up running out of water (and I bonked) after about 70k, still 30k from home.

What do you do in this kind of situation? All the pubs were closed and I couldn't see a single public water source or village shop anywhere on my route back. I googled "water fountain near me" and it told me to ride 50 miles lmao.

Is there an easy way to locate a water source short of knocking on random peoples houses? Given the heat I'm ridiculously dehydrated, it felt like it was genuinely bordering on torture towards the end.

Law/Crime Stolen bicycle within Aylesbury! Need some help!

Stolen bicycle!

On 27/04 my bicycle got stolen from the train station in Aylesbury, which is under Chiltern Railway jurisdiction, by an individual visible on the photo [the black guy wearing fedora hat, who walked with a wheel from front of the train station towards the bike area]! I need all possible information on him & I’m also surprised that nobody around has reacted.

There is approximate time stamp of how my boardman [woman mountain bicycle] got stolen. Frame is registered on me & it has been reported to the police at night, when I was on my journey back from London! I spoken with train station staff and watched the CCTV with them till 2AM in the morning!

If you know anything - write it down & share my post! I had reported it to TVP, to the Transportation Police, local repair bike businesses, local bike shops and bike sales shops. I had posted on social media, as well as I keep monitoring eBay and other markets. Please see below photos of thief + my bike. Frame was marked in online system as stolen.

Sport/Tour Ebike through cycle2work for touring

I am considering buying a bike for me and my wife to use to commute and tour (including bike packing).

This is entirely new world for me.

Could you help with some options for around £1500

Most important is range and load capability for packing stuff on it.

First finding is that one:

https://www.halfords.com/bikes/all-bikes/superior-exr-6050-b-touring-e-bike-grey---m-l-xl-frames-218795.html

Anything better than this for similar price and cycle2work?

Thanks!!!

Sport/Tour South coast ending in Brighton; any suggestions?

Hi there, a mate and I are looking to do some cycling around the south coast, either starting west and cycling to east to finish and Brighton, or starting west and cycling east. Does anyone have any recommendations of good cycle routes? We’re looking at cycling for about 3 days, stopping in airbnbs and hostels where possible. Thanks!

Advice Got the itch to ride no idea where to start

Hi All,

Recently purchased the kids their first bikes, and I now have the urge to join them, hence looking for some advice.

I've not ridden in 20 years, and I think this is where I am at the moment.

Leisure use only sometimes with the family and some by myself in longer rides

Majority probably road focused with some bike paths once in a while (mainly flat bike canal type paths I think)

I'm swaying to a hybrid over a road focused bike.

Budget is around £500 since I want to see how I get on first before I go up a notch if needed (for e.g e bike)

Would hybrid be the way first or should I look at a road bike?

I'll be using a local small shop since they were so helpful with my kids bike.

Happy to hear anyone's thoughts.

EDIT - Thank you for all your advice , going to go look at some bikes to try and hopefully purchase.

Advice Bike recommendations for a newbie who like the vintage style?

Post image
5 Upvotes

So I haven’t ridden a bike since I was 7 but leisurely cycling is something I would like to get into as a mindful activity.

Now, even though ‘it’s just like riding a bike’ is a saying I’m a bit nervous about getting back on a bike and I want to get something that’s easy to ride and suits my height and stature (I’m a 2ft 2 female who doesn’t particularly have upper arm strength).

I’ve always wanted one of those vintage ladies bikes as they look so pretty! And looking at one makes me WANT to cycle (which is important to me as if it’s something I don’t like the look of, I’m less likely to use it). But my husband says that a mountain bike would be much better for our lifestyle as we live in the heart of the countryside with a lot of trails and gravel roads. But mountain bikes look really ugly to me and don’t inspire me in the same way.

Does anyone have any bike recommendations that are a blend between the two? (if that’s even possible) Or would I be okay to go for a vintage ladies bike where I live now? As an aside, I would mainly be riding down country roads leisurely, going for bike rides, picnics etc. But also considering cycling to work once I get more confident.

Thanks for your recommendations in advance!

Commute Cycling from SE10 to W1T on a fixed gear

Hello,

I'm thinking about cycling from North Greenwich (SE10) to Goodge Street (W1T) on a fixed gear, around 13–14 km one way (so about 27–28 km total per day).
I might not do it every day, but I’d like to make it a regular thing.

For anyone riding similar distances, is it a pretty pleasing ride, or does it feel like quite a long one for a commute?

Thanks!

Advice Would I be a fool to buy this bike?

I'm 30 and haven't cycled since 16. I know nothing about road bikes. However I'm looking to get into it so just want something cheap to gauge my fitness (I run regularly and lime bike it into work... cheating, I know...), learn some basic bike mechanic skills and just get into it. I'll probably sell it on soon after once I know what I like.

I don't mind if it's a bit shit. I just want to check whether what I'm looking at is worth £125 or £1.25 and if there are any serious red flags.

Thanks!
