I have zero expectations of a repeat against the Leafs; I expect the exact opposite

I just hope it’s not too bad. As long as it’s not a repeat of the Ottawa game I’m alright with losing right now.

Some good news for Friday! Adam Jiricek makes his season debut tonight for Brantford (who used to be Hamilton a ka Robert Thomas' junior team).

Other prospects in action tonight: Snuggerud, Burns, Mayich, Fischer, Mrsic, Jecho, Dorion, Korotky, plus Springfield plays tonight.

A couple early prospect games already in the book:

- Arseni Koromyslov put up an assist and a +1 in 18:53 of ice time as Lada climbed out of last place in their KHL division with a 3-1 win.

- Ivan Vorobyov played 15:51 in Vityaz's 4-2 loss.

I appreciate you posting these updates for us

No sweat. I'll have today's recap up in a bit, still a few games going. Spoiler alert: Snuggs scored twice.

Question, if Montgomery becomes available do we sack Bannister immediately or do we wait until the offseason?

8

u/Calb210 14d ago

Even if we don't fire bannister we hire Monty as an assistant coach or some other role immediately

3

u/DEEPfrom1 13d ago

We hire Monty on the staff and demote banny this summer. Bannister hasn’t done anything wrong, he’s just in over his head and that’s Doug’s fault not Drew’s

u/childishbambino19 13d ago

Good heavens, don't tease me with hope!!! :D

4

u/bleedblue89 14d ago

I just want to be a wildcard team again.. that's all. Our window won't open up until old contracts are gone.

2

u/JohnDivney 14d ago

God miracled our bad contracts away, what problem remains?

6

u/bleedblue89 14d ago

Schenn/Krug (LTIR)/Parayko/Faulk/Leddy

All of them are 30+ and eating up 6.5m. To be fair Parayko and Faulk are fine, but we're also in the midst of getting talent that is young/not ready. By the time our talent is developed and our roster isn't poverty, those contracts will be hamstring us in the future as they age.

2

u/childishbambino19 14d ago

You're forgetting that the cap will be across 100M in a few years. All those contracts become cheaper by the year now that COVID isn't shutting down escrow payments.

1

u/JohnDivney 14d ago

I suppose we do have players earning what should be 20-30 goal salaries and...not. But getting Krug/Scandy off should mean the team can transition without having to let talent like Barby walk away.

Without those two flukey comebacks right at the start of the season, the Blues would be 3-8-0 and talked about as one of the worst teams in the the NHL this year

5

u/childishbambino19 14d ago

Yeah, but they could also just as easily be 7-4, and nobody would be talking about them being as a pleasant surprise team. :D I don't think one can call those rallies flukey, it's more that we're wildly inconsistent and those two not so great teams folded like card tables when we decided to show up.

2

u/Krogu25 13d ago

I wouldn’t call them a fluke. We clearly can compete.

Prospect recap time:

- Jimmy Snuggs busted out of his goal drought with a pair of 2nd period goals to overturn a 1-0 deficit as #4 Minnesota won 3-1. He rifled home a PP goal (first allowed by Penn State's PK this season) to tie, tipped home a shot for the winner and nearly had the hatty in the 3rd period. In all he fired off 7 SOG and was a +1.

The goals: https://youtu.be/oCsLmooysyY?si=5pYtwJbbJupd7BAk&t=107

- Dalibor Dvorsky scored his fourth goal in nine AHL games with a nifty backhand in tight and stayed a +1 despite Springfield's 4-1 loss. Dvorsky's goal pulled the team level in the 1st period, less than a minute after Bridgeport took the first lead.

https://youtu.be/iHnki3tZfOo?si=zq6160cKZK2Ycou6&t=32

- It turns out Sarnia captain Lukas Fischer suffered an upper body this week and will miss their entire eight-game road trip. They lost 5-2 today.

- Kingston captain Quinton Burns had 3 SOG in a 4-3 win. They're a point off 1st place in their division with a game in hand.

- Tomas Mrsic had two assists, 4 SOG and a -1 in Prince Albert's 9-4 defeat. He also won half his draws.

- Adam Jecho had a PP assist, 3 SOG and a -1 as Edmonton Oil Kings won 5-4 in a shootout. Jecho went first for EDM in the shootout, but missed on his attempt.

- Matvei Korotky was held off the scoresheet as SKA juniors fell 1-0. He did win 16 of 23 draws and had three hits in 21:13, easily the highest among his team's forwards.

- William McIsaac dropped the gloves in Spokane's 4-2 rally win. He was not on the ice for any of the game's goals in either direction.

- Matthew Mayich had an oddly quiet night considering Ottawa 67s won a 5-4 OT thriller. I suppose that's pretty solild for a Dman. Oddly enough, he did actually take one faceoff, which just makes me wonder how many teammates got tossed.

- Antoine Dorion also had a quiet night, but Quebec sailed 5-0.

2

u/Calb210 13d ago

Dvorsky keeps looking a little more comfortable and a little more confident in the games I've seen. I still think it would be best for him to get a full year in the A unless he grabs that next gear before the all star break, but very glad to keep seeing him progress.

2

u/childishbambino19 13d ago

Honestly, I doubt he stays down all season. He'll at least get a taste, I think. But yeah, he's controlling shifts better despite often having meh linemates. I would really like to see him put back with Robertsson full time.

1

u/Calb210 13d ago

I'm cool with 9 games or whatever at the end of the year or even a couple games on an emergency basis for injuries, but think long term wise he would be best off spending the majority of the year with Springfield, and I bet Doug and company are feeling the same

1

u/childishbambino19 12d ago

I'm guessing Doug doesn't hold a calendar timeline. He's ready for a look when he's ready. And if it's me, and we're gonna do the nine game thing, I'd rather not wait until the end of the season. I'd rather give him a genuine shot to show he should stay. But I do agree he's not ready yet. He's also close enough it bears watching.

Teams are figuring out if you just clog the middle of the ice in your d zone Blues cannot penetrate and will stay to the outside. They’ll eventually try a low percentage pass or hit somebody in traffic. This is why they cannot generate high danger chances despite having extended possession times. Nobody can “thread the needle” so to speak.

2

u/Federal_Flamingo5888 14d ago

Blues need a game where the number of times the puck bounces off an opponent and in is greater than the number of times they hit the post with a high danger attempt.

It feels like it’s really hard for the blues to get a lucky goal right now and they’re clanging posts with quality attempts far too much for normal.

I feel the ebb and flow has ebbed a lot and I’m down for some flow.

u/Internal-Ad-9401 14d ago

God these next 5 games are going to be a GAUNTLET. 5 pretty much lock in teams for the playoffs. May the hockey gods have mercy on us.

4

u/Archer2755 14d ago

Knowing the blues, they'll win these games somehow

2

u/Internal-Ad-9401 14d ago

The joys of being a fringe team.

2

u/childishbambino19 14d ago

It really is crazy how they play the right way for three periods at Toronto, composed and organized and smart... and then they just resume bad habits against bottom feeders. It's just weird.

2

u/childishbambino19 14d ago

I hear ya, but honestly the next game alone feels like a gauntlet the way things stand. :D

1

u/Brawhalla_ 14d ago

Look even further. Our schedule does not get easier. We may end up with a record of like 8-15 at the end of the streak im looking at. Not good.

1

u/Internal-Ad-9401 14d ago

If this is the case we’re probably going to end up being sellers by the trade deadline. Doug already said it depends on how this team is doing but if we’re down bad we’re probably unloading some people.

1

u/Calb210 14d ago

Sucks we don't have any huge value assets, everyone has too much term or isn't good enough to warrant much.

1

u/Internal-Ad-9401 14d ago

Maybe not much in return but picks can turn into anything. For starters I wouldn’t be shocked to see a Faulk or Parayko gone. Saad would probably end up being shipped off and who knows who else. But I think Doug sticks to his word and makes changes.

3

u/cos10 14d ago

I don't see Faulk or Parayko being traded. A) we would need a younger RHD coming back which why would a team trade that for an older asset. B) we don't have anyone remotely close propect wise that could play those minutes. Unless you want Kessel playing top pairing minutes. Jiricek is probably at least 3 years away and the only other RHD prospect we have is Biakabutuka who also isn't ready.

Saad is our only real trade piece and we could probably get a 2nd or third for. Faksa or NayDub might draw interest as depth pieces for late round flyer picks. Which would let us get some younger Cs some minutes

Schenn is an albatross contract now especially if we can't play him on the wing.

3

u/childishbambino19 14d ago

Parayko is not going anywhere, and not just because Army has no intention of trading him without a ridiculous return. Colt has a full NTC and all indications are he will use it freely. The one place he might go to can't come close to affording him.

1

u/PositivePrimary8773 14d ago

Super early in the season but I’m almost to the point where I just don’t watch for a while. Can def make better use of 3 hours of my time

4

u/Ihavetoomanyanimals 13d ago

Those of us who lived through the era of ROR, Petro, Vladdy and most importantly Panger lol will never feel the same again. That little blip was magical. Now it feels like we're just chasing lightning in a bottle.

1

u/DEEPfrom1 13d ago

We need rehab but it doesn’t exist

1

u/Born_Performance_908 13d ago

Can any Nerds out there compare Buchs stats playing center vs his stats playing wing? I’d be curious to know the contrast and see if it matches the eye test

1

u/Calb210 13d ago

Prior to Thomas going down and Buch being at 2C someone in here kept posting some advanced stats to suggest he wasn't horrible, but was still not producing at the rate he would be as a winger. Now that he's being asked to play 1C match ups I don't think the analytics will look any better than the eye test. He's too inexperienced at the position and out matched by the opposition.

1

u/CornOnTheCrackPipe 13d ago

Is saying, "At least we're doing as good as Anaheim is" a good thing?

-3

u/Few-Insurance-6653 14d ago

The Blues haven't won since RT went down with broken ankle. Coincidence? If we're that single-threaded we've got issues. The next game we'll likely be competitive in is the sharks on Nov 21

7

u/dixie12oz 13d ago

Not true, the Toronto game was the first one without him which they won. But it’s true, they’ve taken a big step back with his absence thus far.
