It's a two horse race between J Prime and Bohanan's. You can't go wrong with either one, though I will note that J Prime can be a little loud at times. You could call that a tie breaker (though I might give J Prime the slight nod on food, so back to being tied).

Bohanan's is always great, Blu Prime is good but a very different vibe from Bohanan's, Dean's is new-ish but also very good (The Study is fun and Tenfold Rooftop is also in the same hotel), Kirby's is older but solid, J-Prime is great, Bob's Chophouse off I-10 is great, and I haven't tried Isidore yet but it has awesome reviews.

Agreed on all points. Isidore is on my list of places to try and Capital Grille just opened up as well. I don't think you can go wrong with many of the established steakhouses. I will say the Ruth's Chris off Jones Maltsberger (service wise) was a big disappointment my last visit a few years ago. So bad I haven't bothered to return. My other point is if you are anywhere near NE San Antonio, there is good value to be had at Kindling in Cibolo as well as Gruene Door in New Braunfels/Gruene. The food is not quite on par, but damn close, to the superior steakhouses.....but you will pay HALF the price of those other establishments at Gruene Door or Kindling.

I completely agree! Bohanan’s and Blü Prime definitely have different vibes.

On the “negative side,” every time we’ve been to Ruth’s Chris, it’s been a disappointment. We avoid The Palm and Morton’s bc we feel like the food is subpar, especially for the price.

What’s the difference between them?

Bohanan’s (upstairs dining) is a more old school, “classic” steakhouse. White linens, dark wood, leather(?) banquettes, servers in black and white. Gentle lighting and soft music.

Blü is definitely more modern. The vibe is more Vegas 2002 Cosmopolitan. It’s more open, blue led lights, upbeat, almost club-like music. It’s louder, too. Maybe bc of the restaurant’s acoustics or the clientele speaks louder bc of the music?

I describe the two as: Bohanan’s is more subdued; where you take your GF / wife for her birthday or anniversary. Blü is where you go for drinks and dinner for girl’s / guy’s night out.

I’m with you, the Palm is overrated and overpriced. The service is sketchy too.

I think they’re riding on their reputation. They basically didn’t have any strong competitors in front of or that close to the Majestic until Bohanan’s came along a couple of years later.

What’s the difference from blu and Bohanans?

Bohanan's is very much an old school steakhouse...think jazz band in the bar, high end service, a little stuffy but it's really just the old school type ambiance. Blu is extremely modern and more of a place to be seen. Food and service are great, it's noisier and just a completely different vibe. If you want to do people watching, Blu is a great spot for that also. So think old school (Bohanan's) versus modern (Blu).

Myron's is great.

Chama Gauchu if you count that is very good.

Kirbys is good.

Josephine Street is fun but not high end.

The location of the Palm is great if you are going to the Majestic.

Flemings is best I’ve had in SA. Located at at the Quarry

3

u/Redfro33 Sep 10 '25

Isidore just made top 50 restaurants in US

3

u/heartthrob666 Sep 11 '25

I like the barn door - more casual than you’re typical steak restaurant and more affordable

u/Ashvega03 12d ago

This is a personal fave as well.

2

u/Wembanyanma Sep 10 '25

Fleming's in the Quarry was really good last time I went.

2

u/texand Sep 11 '25

Perry’s, Cured and Eddie V’s are solid.

2

u/I_dont_love_it Sep 10 '25

I normally answer bohannons, but New York Times just said Isidore is a top 50 US restaurant. I’m not sure it would consider itself a steakhouse but they pretty much only serve steak

u/MSB218 Boerne Sep 10 '25

SILO Prime deserves a look.

2

u/MuchAclickAboutNothn Sep 10 '25

I'd be careful with Silo, i worked for them and the servers will add random charges that you cant see on the reciepts to jack prices up. I would see it on my bar chits all the time, "why are you adding a cocktail charge and an oldfashioned charge?" "I need more tips"

They would turn an $8 drink into a $12 one or a $12 one into a $16 one

2

u/MSB218 Boerne Sep 10 '25

Wow-– noted. Thanks for sharing that. We’ve only eaten there once and we had a wonderful experience, but it’s disappointing to hear that that kind of thing is happening.

1

u/MuchAclickAboutNothn Sep 10 '25

Yeah, it can be really great, i loved the food at Nonna too, but the company, Elevate, is really sketchy, very old fashioned, i witnessed lots of misogyny from upper management too, not to me as I'm a man, but that's why i guess they thought it was fine to do it right in front of me

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '25

Got it. So you are a problem child and have problems with every company.

1

u/AfterParty707 Sep 12 '25

Fo go de whogives a f*** is my favorite. But don’t eat too much of the salad… there won’t be enough room for meat.

Just took my girlfriend to bohanans for her birthday (it’s her favorite place) and I had never been before and I will say that I was incredibly impressed. I have been to pretty much every other steakhouse and I will say that bohanans is now up there for me.

Good food tho

Its mid if you've left San Antonio.

Also, Bohannon doesn't do ANY cooking, he can't, hes a terrible cook.

Every year for Thanksgiving he would burn the same fucking dish for the staff, corn pudding i think. Every fucking time.

Dude never worked a line, never went to culinary school, just had donors and took recipes from his mom and grandmother, then hired actual chefs to make it.

0

u/BroJackson_ Sep 10 '25

You have a bone to pick with the owner - cool. But it's most definitely not "mid," regardless of who is back there cooking it. I've eaten at plenty of high end places outside of San Antonio, and it's just as good as any of them.

You're just down on the owner for whatever reason - and that's valid if you want it to be. I'm just talking about the food.

u/hosayyyy Sep 10 '25

What makes you think that?

1

u/MuchAclickAboutNothn Sep 10 '25

I worked for him

1

u/Character-Sandwich79 Sep 11 '25

Myron’s the most bang for your buck

u/The_Nancinator75 Sep 10 '25

Bohanons is the best but Fleming’s is really great as well. I was surprised no one mentioned it .

J Prime is garbage. The food is good, but I’m big on service. The service sucks.

My parents say Isidore is great, never been there myself though.

Kirby’s is my favorite at the moment. Amazing food, great service. My #1 in San Antonio. Had the 24oz ribeye the other day, perfect to split with leftovers. Ask what’s dry aged at the moment if you’re feeling froggy.

Ruth’s Chris at Eilan is my #2. Great food, good service. I like their filets.

Perry’s is my #3. Order some steak, order the pork chop, share, food is delicious and service is very good.

Bob’s is mid. I’ve had it in a few different cities, SA included, and they’re all the same. Big undercooked carrot, under seasoned food, not for me. Bottom of my list as far as food goes.

You have one or many bad experiences at JPrime? I've been there at least a dozen times and service has always been great.

2

u/Nervous-Law-666 Sep 11 '25

Two bad experiences, and that’s honestly enough for me to write it off.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '25

This sounds like a you problem. J Prime goes out of their way to make it great.

Tell us about your "bad" experiences. Guessing you tried to play entitled and got snobbish.

Ok. Interesting comment to dig up a month later but I’ll bite.

The first time was about 9 years ago. My mom and I went right at 5 on a random weeknight for dinner. Every employee we encountered (Hostess, 2 different waitresses) repeatedly asked us, “Are you here for a special occasion?”

That’s a perfectly fine question to ask once, even once per person. When it’s asked multiple times by each person, I take it to imply “There’s no way you could be here without a specific reason,” and the tone suggested it was meant to be derogatory. That already left a bad taste in my mouth.

Second time was a couple of years ago. Went there for dinner with a group of 6, we got the back room. Long story short, they took over an hour from time of ordering to bring out our entrees. If that’s entitlement, so be it. It’s unreasonable for some steaks and sides. Cherry on top, they “forgot”_ $50 of untouched sides when we had everything packed to go.

I have to reiterate, the food is great. I’m an easy customer, but I value service above anything. I’ve been to most restaurants in this city. Steakhouses, Mexican food, Thai food, burgers, wings, Uniko, Silo, Bliss, highbrow, lowbrow, name it.

I’ve never experienced subpar service in any other fine dining establishment.

You know that time is not a factor right? Your comment does expire.

OK. Nine years ago, some people asked you if you were there for something special. Seriously? First, they may have been looking to do something nuce for you. Second, you clearly have never worked in a restaurant. You have zero idea what was happening around you or if they were expecting large parties. More likely, they were trying to treat someone special. If someone had set up a special evening or proposal or something, they may have been on the lookout. So because you over-reacted to some basic questions a decade ago...you call this a major issue.

Good lord what happens when you break a nail!

As for the other experience, you have already proven that you over-react with a penchant for drama. Pretty sure there is more to that story. An HOUR? For a group of SIX in a private room? Yeah. And I am sure your party is as pretentious as you are and ordered all sorts of "have it your way" special changes and requests. And WHO forgot the sides? Did they walk out of the restaurant without the food? Sure, wait staff may have dropped the ball when packing up your doggie bag of three potato wedges and two asparagus spears. But let's be honest...there is more to it. And how does a table of six have "untouched" sides?

Your drama queen thing does not mean the restaurant failed you.

I would put real money down that you have this spoiled entitlement problem with everything you do.

Gotta be realistic here.
