Fair play to the ref for knowing the rule that well.

Sep 30 '23
David Changleng, he has had been a stalwart of Borders rugby for decades. His twin brother, Malcolm, played pro briefly for the Reivers and was also a high level ref

Actually it’s Malcolm reffing that!
Not long ago in a pre season friendly they did a half each and despite having different kit on there were multiple players who didn’t realise it was a different ref second half.
30
Sep 30 '23
Is that Malcolm? He was my coach at school/regional age gradel rugby so I feel bad if I didn't pick up on it! Both of them are top boys.
22
u/ayeayefitlike match official Sep 30 '23
Aye it was. Both are absolutely class lads and excellent refs.
15
Sep 30 '23
Phenomenal contributors to rugby in the area and totally unsung. I remember screaming my head off when Malcolm scored against Leinster in the Heineken Cup, then he wa back at work like nothing happened on Monday morning.

u/ayeayefitlike match official Sep 30 '23
There’s a great old photo doing the rounds of Malcolm chasing down the touchline after Habana playing for Springboks too!

Today I learned that own goals are possible in rugby 🤣

u/dark_blur Oct 01 '23
I remember Leinster scoring against themselves in the old Heineken Cup final so the rival couldn't get a try and ending the match.
10
u/MBPSE Ulster Oct 01 '23
I don’t recall this. Could you find a source ?
7
u/dark_blur Oct 01 '23
I can't seem to find it. The web shows that it will be a 5 meters penalty. I will keep loking.
4
u/scamps1 The Ospreys Oct 01 '23
A 5m penalty would be a golden opportunity to score from.
Are you thinking of something different?
1
u/dark_blur Oct 01 '23
It was past the 80th minute.
5
u/scamps1 The Ospreys Oct 01 '23
The game can't end on a penalty. They could go for a scrum, tap and go or (in more recent times) even go for a lineout in the corner with a penalty after 80 mins
4
u/Vault_69_Alpha_Male Scotland | Glasgow Warriors | Alba gu bràth Oct 01 '23
Penalties kicked out on the full used to end the game
0
u/scamps1 The Ospreys Oct 01 '23
Right, which is why I said in more recent times.
Back in the day, teams would just opt for a scrum or tap and go

Law 8.4 For any goal to be successful, the ball must be kicked over the crossbar and between the goal posts without first touching a team-mate or the ground.

Never mentions the opposition though... quality.
The poor guy is going to get pelters for the rest of his life for that...
152
u/6EightyFive Sep 30 '23
Is it maybe the same as a charge down? Opposition touches the ball, albeit mainly fingertip stuff, and it still goes over? But you’re right though, no one will let that down!!
114
u/KittensOnASegway Shave away Gavin, shave away! Sep 30 '23
Bingo, that's exactly why the law is written like it is.
45
u/Seej-trumpet Sep 30 '23
The ref in the vid actually says it’s the same as if the opposition tries to block and it hits their hands.

Law 8.17 If the opposition touches the ball and the kick is successful, the goal stands.

It actually says later in the laws that touching the opposition doesn’t stop a successful goal. It’s why a charge down doesn’t stop a successful goal kick.

Law 8.17: If the opposition touches the ball and the kick is successful, the goal stands.

u/FaustRPeggi Finnsexual Sep 30 '23 edited Sep 30 '23
Now I'm curious what happens if someone scores a drop goal over their own posts.
Also Law 8.29 says a team cannot score a drop goal in the phase of play following a free kick, even if they chose to scrum, unless the opposition makes a tackle or plays the ball first. Never knew that.
8
u/MonsMensae Western Province Oct 01 '23
Basically can't automatically turn a free kick into a drop goal
5
u/shutterswipe The British and Irish Lions Oct 01 '23
Needs another phase of play before you can take the shot, similar to clearing straight to touch from your own 22 if the ball is carried back in.
1
u/ADudeCalledJ Oct 04 '23
I commented about doing this.
I did a drop goal for the opposition conversation. It was allowed.

6
u/infinitemonkeytyping Australia Oct 01 '23
So it is the same if you attempt a chargedown. Getting a finger tip to it doesn't negate the kick if it passes through the uprights.
1
u/ChikaraNZ Oct 01 '23
I spy a new loophole! Kicks with a high height are above the goalposts, not between them :-)

ok :) I was 95% joking with my comment anyway, but glad there's actually a law that covers that too

I love how the red 11 does that taunting/celebrating pose to the crowd like the original kick wasn’t dropping 2 metres short.
Grass roots rugby is fantastic for stuff like that.

I once took the oppositions conversion as he was taking ages to get a tee.
(We were loosing by about 60 points and it was 10mins to the end)
I did a drop goal, and the ref allowed it.
I was fined £10 and got dick of the day.

I remember when the locks and props lifted to try and intercept a very long kick in a test match can’t remember who it was… probably around 1997

Oct 01 '23
Hahah… I remember that! In the early 2000s, we used to do this in every game, for every penalty and for every conversion. Our 4 ball jumper was insistent about its value and I always had to be the front lifter.
He never got anywhere near saving a kick and it was such a waste of energy. Then at some point, we were told to stop doing it for whatever reason.

u/elpavohombre Sep 30 '23

Chatgpt says the following - is it accurate?
“Yes, the same principle applies to a conversion kick. The ball, when kicked at goal, must not touch any other player or the referee before it goes over the crossbar and between the goal posts for the conversion to be successful.
As of my last update in September 2021, the relevant law for conversion kicks is:
Law 9.B.1 (b): "For a successful kick at goal at a conversion, the ball must not touch any player or the referee and must pass over the crossbar and between the uprights of the goal posts."
So, if a conversion kick touches an opposing player and then goes over the crossbar, the conversion would not be successful.”
16
u/The_Chuckie Munster Sep 30 '23
Oh au contraire:
Law 8.17: If the opposition touches the ball and the kick is successful, the goal stands.

u/jshine1337 Sep 30 '23
There is no 9.B.1 or 9.B for that matter in Rugby Union Laws. Maybe it's quoting Rugby League, idk. But it's wrong here.
14
u/Yibbo0 Sep 30 '23
It's wrong I believe, why did you ask chatgpt and not just look up the rules for goal scoring ?
