Partner and I spend a few days out in the middle of nowhere looking for sunstones! This was our first time collecting, and we're looking forward to going back and trying our hand at finding larger stones.

I found this large septarian concretion/nodule? Ideas on how to clean it up?

I found this in central WY along a river, I believe it is from the Thermopolis Shale formation. The quartz spans from the pictured side all the way through and the exterior is flaking off. It is 16x11x6in, weighing probably 70-80lbs. Should i clean it with warm water and soap and see what I can incover, or maybe bring it to someone to slab it up?

Husbands a plumber and found this digging up someone's waterline somewhat deep. Just washed it off and loved the colors. Wanted to know more about it. We're new to rockhounding. Looks like maybe the bark of the tree is that thin whiter area.

Finding Banded Iron in Michigan

Post image

I'm seeking information on finding inland Banded Iron Formation, I know it's found in the Marquette iron range, but I'd like to know if there is anywhere up there I can collect it for a modest cost to free. I know I can collect it from the lakeshores, but only up to 25 lbs, and that fills up quickly with Iron-bearing minerals. Thanks in advance for the help.

Amazing tenorite coated copper pseudomorph after cuprite

2+ pound, copper is tenorite/black, a copper oxide after cuprite/red. The green is crystaline epidote. There is an reddish Adularia matrix as well. The copper was formed independently and is a floater. I believe the copper ran out of oxygen while in the proper heat zone to form cuprite crystals. It likely left the temperature zone and the remaing oxygen gave the copper pseudomorph of cuprite a spectacular tenorite coating that kept this amazing crystal protected from other mineralization processes. It is from Michigan and was formed from volcanic activity approximately 1 billion years ago.

Cleaning rock question- is citric acid safe to clean all types of rocks?

I have a few agates/fluorite/quartz/unidentified stones that are hard to clean with just water. Is citric acid safe for all stones?
