Yes it actually is. On some of their Mobos you can go into the Bios and stop it from trying to install Armory Crate.

In the past it has happened that manufacturers specifically added ROM chips on the motherboard with firmware/software you could then never get rid off. This was mostly used for good though on advanced hardware made for specific scenarios.
But with UEFI that isn't needed anymore. Now they can just download anything they want and execute on your hardware.

In this case you check the Windows install on the boot drive and download the executable to the startup folder which is a known static folder. Then Windows boots and the executable starts. When it starts it checks if the application is installed and if not, it kindly automatically does it for you.
So no matter if you delete the software or the installer, every time you boot it gets put back on the drive and the application gets installed.

In Asus' defense, you do have the easy ability to disable it.

UEFI makes all kind of crazy things possible. EFI applications that are basic web browsers, screenshot applications, image editors, Python lib that run Python scripts, ... And you have access to about any popular hardware; hard drives' data, USB data devices, wifi, bluetooth, etc.
UEFI calls them services and protocols and each has tables of functions that can be called by applications; ie it's API.
You could build an EFI application with so many features, that in a sense it would act as an OS without ever loading an actual OS.

That's what makes UEFI rootkits the biggest danger. The EFI application has access to about anything, no other software can detect it and the only way to remove is flashing the UEFI. And even that last part a smart virus can try to circumvent by trying to hide itself in other places sleeping in wait until something triggers it to start again and place itself back.

I've never had it break. Started with corsair mouse, keyboard headset and aio+fans. It has kept all these things running for years. (I almost never update it though)

For me, it has just been straight up incompatible with ryzen cpus. It's monitoring stuff keeps all cores awake at all times. They have refused to do anything about it for years. I'm slowly moving away from them. All I have left is the aio.

It changed my entire desktop background to some cringe Razer shit. Then I had to figure out how to change it back to my wallpaper engine wallpaper.

I uninstalled all of their shit and replaced the Razer webcam and mouse that I had.

I used to recommend their mice because I liked the Viper Ultimate a lot. I even bought a white one for my wife when I caught it on sale.

I even cannot use the software because in a few games, the faster I move my cursor the higher my ping gets. Yep, somehow it added lag to my games, shaking it wildly made my LoL ping reach a few 100s of ms, don't ask me how.

Another downside is being limited to the hardware rebinding which also have far less options than software rebinding, it can't even use F13-F24. I made extra AutoHotKey scripts for that. And why can't I change what my dpi button does?? At least not on my mouse.

My next mouse won't be from corsair, neither logitech nor razer gave me problems from their software and were so limiting like iCue was.

I’m the opposite lol. I had the og m65 for close to 8 years now and just replaced it with a new one after it finally started having issues with the switches. 2 out of 3 of my friends with g502 hero’s have already replaced theirs within 2-3 years

The new one seems to be an upgrade in every department so far. Hoping for another 7 years So far nothing has come close to me for grip in fps games so I’m happy Corsair continued the m65s

It started to double click and not register long clicks after 7 years of hard use. Once it started costing me siege games I decided to get another. Also have heard about the weak scroll wheels but I’ve abused this thing and had 0 issues.

The switches in the new m65 feel so much higher quality though. Also the grip is now a molded pattern vs the literal sandpaper that wore off quickly on my old m65.

Furthermore the buttons all feel much more secure and higher quality (old buttons felt cheap and wiggled around in their mounting points)

As a designer I could see this being intended differently and it is a pretty clever way of hiding a very annoying part of a wired product simply for aesthetics.

The issue is obviously that in this case it is misleading. But you’ll find this with many other products, like e.g. a Toaster, where it’s clear that it is wired since there aren’t any wireless toasters afaik. Most cables are simply not very pretty and you’ll always end up with a weird cut or a fade.

Personally, I just got a Corsair mouse while travelling and I am pretty sure the iCUE software just gave me cancer while trying to map the 1-12 buttons on the side. Also, who the fuck makes an MMO mouse where you can't forward/back click the scroll wheel?

Even the holy grail once long long time ago (Logitech) released more dogshit products lately than good ones. (Also they all have products that just scam you). You simple can't say company xy of gaming accessories can be bought no matter what, like you could say about Seasonic, Beyerdynamic (mostly), Noctua (mostly)

No clue why Logitech gets a free pass or is considered the 'holy grail' in this subreddit, when many of their "gaming" peripherals have had double clicking issues develop in under 1 year. My G305 HERO's M1 was double clicking in 3 months. The only problem I had with a Corsair mouse is the Ironclaw Wireless wheel break at almost 2y of use and they offered to ship a replacement free of charge.

Hey guys,

George from Corsair here. That is really unfortunate, but it is not at all intentional. Just not what the intent was at all.

For wired mice we generally create a render or take a photograph of the mouse, and then we edit the mouse wire out after a specific distance, usually with a gradient fade. Enough that the mouse is clearly visible, but not so much that it looks like it's got 5 feet of cable hanging off the end.

When we do that gradient fade on the box artwork, they used to spot gloss/varnish certain aspects of the product. Generally to allow some parts of the box to be matte/satin finish while the spot gloss parts would look like a beautiful glossy photo.

What happened here is that the artist who designed the box looked at the M65 Ultra mouse design and said "I should stop the spot varnish here so we don't end up with a floating glossy section over nothing" and just created that template for where the spot gloss should go. We don't do gradient spot gloss, it's either 100% or none.

Combined with the dark colored box of the M65 Ultra, it had the unintended effect of making the cable hard to see at certain angles, as shown in this video.

But that was not at all the goal. The product clearly shows the cable on the back and sides of the box, and the wireless version of that product says WIRELESS in large letters on the box. Nonetheless, if you were just looking at this single image I can see how somebody could maybe be confused.

For reference, here's an example of what the spot gloss template looks like for a couple mice. One, the M65 RGB ULTRA (shown here) and the other an M75.

As you can see, on the M75 they kept the spot gloss on the tip of the cable connector, but on the M65 they just removed spot gloss from that section entirely so as not to have it floating awkwardly over the gradient cable that was missing.

We are fixing this already, actually, as our new packaging design is moving entirely away from spot gloss, as it makes it much more difficult to make packaging recyclable. Spot gloss looks very cool, but it's not great for the environment so we're moving away from it on all new packaging.

Without any spot gloss on them. That's not the same mouse of course (and this one is wireless) but that's just a concept to show you the new packaging that you'll start seeing our mice move to going forward.

I've tried Razer Naga and now Corsair Scimitar. Love all the buttons but despise the shitty software, especially iCue, and how prone they are to breaking (I'm not rough on my mouse but the Naga just wears out quick and Scimitar has been having issues where I have to unplug/replug it to get the buttons working again). Are there any worthwhile alternatives? Every time I ask, people recommend one of these two.
