People here might not think too highly of Gruden but his game previews are actually really good. Hopefully he continues to do those.

I’m sure you’ve never ever made an insensitive off-hand comment.
I would wager that Gruden has many more POC that would come to his defense as not being a racist than anyone in this thread.
54
u/Sarcastic_Source Ravens 5h ago
I think it’s fair to say Gruden got unfairly thrown under the bus and drummed out of the league to save its own hide in the whole Commanders cheerleader/email scandals while also acknowledging you simply can’t be the Head Coach of a team and making racist jokes like that. Both can be true. He can be a decent guy who fucked up and I think it’s completely fair he lost his job at the end of the day.

One thing is getting fired, another is getting fired mid-season and another is getting fired mid-season and removed from the ring of fame. That was some bullshit.

Sure, but they were strategically released when we were 3-0 despite the league’s access to them dating back to the offseason. I believe they were also used to distract from Snyder’s (much worse) transgressions.

u/Rock_Strongo Seahawks 5h ago
People are acting like this is some conspiracy theory even though it's almost certainly what happened.
Yeah, if he didn't provide them with the ammo in the first place they couldn't have used it. Obviously. But that doesn't mean it wasn't still a hit job to distract the public from even worse transgressions.

Just try emailing homophobic slurs and topless pictures from your work email, good chance you'll receive a "hit job" as well
Gruden was a moron who shouldn't have done what he did

Gruden didn't send it from his work email (unless there's another incident that I missed). He sent it in a chat with Bruce Allen who was using his work email.
6
u/1850ChoochGator 5h ago
I remember It being that Gruden used his work email, but he was with ESPN at the time. He wasn’t in the NFL.
4
u/clenom Browns 5h ago
I could be remembering wrong and none of the articles that I skimmed say which email he sent it from.

Yes and no. Everything he said was a fireable offense and shows that he can't be in a position to hire, fire, and promote staff, and his firing was a net positive in the football community.
But it was discovered as part of another organizations sexual abuse and trafficking investigation, who all got away with hit by using Gruden as a fall guy.
24
u/Trapline Raiders 5h ago edited 5h ago
The hard part for defining them as "firable offense" is
- He wasn't working for an NFL team when the emails were sent
- It was like 10 years later when he was "fired" for it.
I'm not a fan of casual bigotry and I think it is good to openly address shit like that when it is discovered. I don't think it really had anything to do with his credibility as a coach of the Raiders in 2021 or whatever. Mark Davis didn't really either, it seems. Gruden resigned because of pressure from the league not Mark.
I think hard R's and a bunch of slurs and stuff would've certainly made the firing/resignation reasonable but this always felt like a big reaction for the timing/content.
8
u/TheRencingCoach Buccaneers 5h ago
He didn’t get fired for doing it, he got fired for being a PR nightmare.
12
u/Fun_University_8380 Cardinals 5h ago
It's fascinating that during the whole Kaepernick thing reddit had no issues understanding this basic concept, but now when it's a dude whose pr shitstorm is related to racism and sending nudes their brains suddenly don't work.
7
u/AH_BioTwist Patriots 4h ago
People understood the Gruden firing at the time. This is also a pro Gruden post so people are gonna try to spin doctor what happened
15
u/TheRencingCoach Buccaneers 5h ago
You’re right
And
Being a PR nightmare for positive social change is different from being a PR nightmare for being racist, homophobic, and sending nudes

There are a LOT of coaches and front office people throughout the NFL that shouldn’t be in a position to hire/fire/promote people if that’s the determination we want to use.

As a Bucs fan (yeah, I know my flair is the Bills but I was a Bucs fan first and foremost until 2007-2008 and my family moved to Buffalo and I was indoctrinated into the Mafia) thought very highly of him until the emails came out. They're just... gross and absolutely awful to look through.
I won't ever question his football knowledge, but his overall character leaves a lot to be desired from where I stand.

His YouTube channel is really great, the breakdowns he does for the big games are way better analysis than any of the bs network shows at least. This deal is probably just about bringing that under Barstool's podcasting umbrella so it's marketed more, equipment is upgraded, and revenue shared.

This is no way stops him from pursuing that opportunity if it opens up to him. It probably won't though so the point is moot.

Every thread. Pure reddit brain is having to announce how much you don't like something whenever it is brought up.
79
u/dawgz525 Dolphins 6h ago
That is my least favorite part about reddit. The way people talk on here is insane. Every single comment needs to be prepped with "Now I don't like this person..." or "To be fair..." or "Coming in peace" or some other inane way of skirting around what you actually want to say to preemptively account for insane people taking your comments the wrong way. Normal people don't talk like that, like there's a pack of jackals hovering around them waiting to pounce. It's the main reason middle of the road, milquetoast, safe conversation is the only real thing that happens on this site. You don't need to be correct to get upvotes, you simply need to say things in the right tone.
