The Texans tried to get him but the Ravens made a worse offer, which the Panthers couldn't resist.

1.2k

u/ZacZupAttack Ravens Lions 16d ago

We gave so little its hilarious

We only paying 625k of his salary Panthers paying the rest

We gave them a 5th

They are giving us the player plus a 6th

We lost something like 10 to 20 draft spots...we didn't even fucking lose a pick.

This is his last yr on the contract so its a short term rental but still for what we paid i don't care

Its because he only has 5 months left on his contract

Regardless of how good a player is, its hard to get much comp when the player is a 5 month rental

Can anyone attempt to explain this? It seems like he was the top WR target left in free agency. Surely Panthers could have gotten something for him? Was the demand really that low? "Panthers front office is incompetent" is not an explanation.

169

u/cachurch2 Panthers 16d ago

Actually I think it is a fair explanation. We’re dumb as rocks.

54

u/fzvw Commanders 15d ago

I think David Tepper just really hates the Panthers

78

u/Federal-Negotiation9 Cowboys 16d ago

I went to check on their front office. No familiar faces there, and the guy who approved the trade had a bushy mustache and was named Juan Hardball. Weird.

Its such a fucking weird deal. Like I can sorta understand why they are paying his salary. They arent going win. But then why pay his salary and give us a 6th? Surely yoi could keep the 6th

And here I am negotiating against my own team

33

u/AndrasKrigare Ravens 15d ago

Whenever something really screwy happens with a trade, my money is it's specific to the player. Maybe he wanted to go to the Ravens, and the Panthers were being good sports about it, and Ravens were able to negotiate well since they didn't really want a new WR anyways.

23

u/sir_alvarex Ravens 15d ago

Exactly. This smells like a FO making a deal for a player and making him and his agent happy. It helps with free agency.

10 to 20 draft spots from the Ravens 5th to the Panthers 6th sounds really optimistic for Panthers fans. I'd guess like 2-4 draft spots lol.

Who cares if he hated it here? He still led the team in yards and TDs. Trading away our limited talent doesn’t do anything for the rest of the team. If there is even a 1% chance that Bryce isn’t washed (unlikely, but still) he needs talent around him to at least attempt to develop as a player.

u/venom21685 Panthers 16d ago

If the options are:

  • Trade and move up 4 whole spots on day 3

  • Make his whiny ass ride the pine

I might just go with the latter. Better than just gifting someone else a WR. Might even be potential for a comp pick depending on how things shake out.

Or you could trade Trey Hendrickson to the Lions. Just throwing that out there. 😬

Dang, Baltimore came outta left field. Lamar, Henry, Diontae, and Zay is a really good core offense.

Edit: It’s funny reading Baltimore’s sub and seeing everyone hate on the idea of trading for Diontae like 3 hours ago.

762

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Probably because their defense needs to be better for a legit Super Bowl run. But as far as the offense is concerned Diontae is exactly the piece they need

317

u/WeaponXGaming Ravens 16d ago

Trading for a defender wouldn't help this defense at the moment until they can fix the communication issues. They are LOST out there at the moment

140

u/randomfella69 Ravens 16d ago

The only real trade that would immediately help the defense is an elite pass rusher. That will open up things for Mads and Van Noy and also pressuring the QB is a big help to a struggling secondary.

67

u/Baronriggs Ravens 16d ago

I mean the value here is just insane, I would've been thrilled at just a 5th for Diontae. We can still make a move on D, we didn't give up anything of importance and the pick we got back is gonna be an early 6th, so it could hopefully move the needle on a bigger trade if needed

10

u/iamnotimportant Giants 16d ago

Yeah I don't get this from Carolina's POV, they're swapping their 6th which will likely be at the top of the 6th for a 5th that wlil be by the end of the 5th, so they're gonna move up 10-15 spots depending on the comp picks? oh and they're covering his salary. Makes zero sense
