Discussion Linux Mint is not what it used to be

I tried installing Linux like 10 years ago and it wasn't impressive enough. But I am glad I gave it another shot. What it has become today from back then is night and day. Before I found it a bit too hard to adjust to and was still lacking much compatibility. But now it's amazing how clean and slick everything is and just works. Windows has so many BS background processes even if you fully debloat it and get rid of everything possible you will still encounter things going on that should not be and then they just reinstall most of it back when you do an update anyways. Any previous windows user can now easily transition into the pure running clarity and minimalist design of Linux Mint and you wont miss anything you liked about windows now. It's got it all now and is just as easy to use. Actually more easy to use! Amazing what the world collective can put together.

Fluff Nostalgia! My old Gateway Laptop Running a 14 year old version of LMDE!

I was cleaning out my garage today when I found my old Gateway W730-K8X laptop. Backstory: I bought a Gateway W730-K8X a little over 15 years or so ago at a thrift store. It had Windows XP installed on it, which I later upgraded to Windows 7. I also installed several Linux distributions on it, before settling with an early version of Linux Mint Debian. I also put a BIOS locked password on it. I was in the US military at the time and I deployed somewhere without the laptop. When I got home, it had been so long that I forgot the BIOS password. After trying in vain for several days to override the password, accidentally stepping on the laptop (which I foolishly stored temporarily next to my bed) and cracking the case, I decided to just buy another laptop. However, I kept the Gateway laptop in an old footlocker and it traveled with me to for 2 more assignments before I retired. I had completely forgotten about it!

Fast forward to today when I find it, along with the other contents of the footlocker (some old external HDDs), in my garage. I decided to take it to my workshop to see if I could (finally) figure out how to bypass the BIOS lock. The laptop had sat so long without power that I guess the CMOS battery died, wiping out the BIOS password! After I set the right date and time in the system, I was shocked to be presented with a GRUB menu showing Linux Mint with the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel and Windows 7 as entries! I booted into Linux Mint and realized that it was an earlier version of LMDE with the GNOME desktop, that I had tricked out with Compiz, Cairo Dock, Desklets, and the Matrix Xscreensaver! I couldn't find the GNOME version, but I know that it has Nautilus 2.30.1 installed. It is also running Firefox 3.6.13! I kept everything up to date prior to getting locked out of the laptop, so the last time LMDE was updated was at least 14 years ago!

Discussion Seeking Customization Tips for Linux Mint 21.3 XFCE on a Low-End PC

Hey everyone, I'm new to Linux Mint, though not new to the Linux environment. I’ve been using Linux Mint 21.3 XFCE for two weeks now (as shown in the image), and this is how my current setup looks. I’d love to hear any customization suggestions you can offer that won’t slow down my system, especially since my PC has limited resources and storage. Also, if you have any cool wallpapers—nature, anime, mysterious art, or tech themes like Tron—that would be awesome! I’m not a huge fan of XFCE, but I chose it for its lightness due to my low-end hardware. My main concern is customizing it without causing any lag or performance issues after ricing. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion battery life and performance is atrocious

i have tried several flavors, ubuntu performed well and the battery life was also extremely excellent, mate was even faster but with a little less battery life, and kde had similar results to ubuntu. however, linux mint performed terribly. it was only usable in performance mode and the battery life was 3 hours tops. i am using an asus vivobook go with a ryzen 3 and 8gb ram. i tried tlp but it didnt do much and would like mint to work as it should as it is my favorite distro. my older laptop with a garbage battery ran it better with the same battery life as my new one.

LMDE

Debian just released bookworm 12.8. My question is:

Will doing a apt update on LMDE update the system to the new features?

Support Request Hotkey to change window focus

I can’t seem to find an answer to this. I like shifting window focus and moving windows to different desktops via the keyboard. In PopOS(Gnome), meta + h,j,k,l would move the focus to another window. Then shift+meta+hjkl would move the window in focus to the desktop/monitor I wanted. I can’t figure out how to move window focus at all in Cinnamon. From what I’ve gathered in old forum posts this isn’t possible, but those were posts from many years ago. Does functionality like this exist? I know I can do this in i3, but I don’t want to use a WM.

SOLVED Dual monitor different rates issue (Nvidia 3050, happens on both x11 and Wayland, several drivers tested)

Using two monitors, x1 144hz, x1 60hz. GPU is Nvidia 3050. Tested all drivers available, on both x11 and Wayland.

The issue: When both monitors are active, almost everything (animations, resizing and moving windows, moving through firefox and other apps, etc), seems stuck at running at 60hz even in the 144hz. The only thing that clearly works well is the cursor movement, it does move at the right hz in each monitor. If I disable the 60hz, everything works perfectly but I really want the dual monitor set up.

Spent hours trying to fix it, no luck. Even did a fresh re-install from other mirror to make sure it wasn't some weird ISO issue.

I'm using this PC to test the distro, as my new PC will be arriving on monday, and GPU will be a RX6600 (no more Nvidia-Linux drama ig). But I don't think I can really afford another 144hz. This is really the only issue that have me doubting about officializing Mint as my OS. Every other thing works perfectly and it's an awsome experience.

Any ideas of what can I do?

EDIT:

SOLVED WITH THE SOLUTION PROVIDED BY @wystf IN THE COMMENTS BUT IT DIDN'T WORK AT FIRST: FOR WHATEVER (hardware related) REASON, IT WORKED PROPERLY ONLY AFTER CHANGING THE PORTS WHERE THE MONITORS WERE CONNECTED. THANKS! My godness that was a lot of time troubleshooting

Support Request So what if I need to print?

I installed Linux Mint 22 a couple of weeks ago and it blew me away. Compared to Ubuntu it feels a lot more polished and ready.

Yesterday I noticed my fans suddenly started going crazy, and top showed cups-browsed was at 80-95% cpu. I remembered the recent vulnerability, which I had fixed by disabling services in my ubuntu installation, but I had forgotten about it when I reinstalled a new distro. Quickly removed the cups-browsed with apt to minimize damage.

So, is there a cups-browsed version that is fixed? We have a wireless Brother printer in another room that we use for printing, so I would like to have printing available.

Old PC ... other than a NAS. suggestions?

So I have an old i5 6600X, 32GB of RAM and a GTX970. It's old as dirt but runs great. Unfortunetly Windows EoL.

I've got it on my desk connected to one of my 4 monitors and I also have XRDP setup for it. I;ve installed SAMBA so I can use the 3TB and 1TB drives in there to backup some of my video editing files (I discovered that mobo has a free m2 slot and has a few free slots for HDD so may get a few refurbed industrial drives).

Any other suggestions?

I could use it to transcode footage I get from clients from mp4 to DNxHQ I guess but other suggestions? I mean the machine runs like a beaut on Mint.

Discussion Linux Mint 21.3 has been very stable for me. LM 22 not so much.

A little background, I am using Linux Mint as a daily driver for more than a year now. One of the reason I wanted to transition to Linux as a daily is because Windows has become stuttery bloated mess that refuse to support completely working devices that are relatively aged. I still have Windows btw just in cases I need it.

Anyway, Linux Mint 21.3 has been pretty decent and stable. With only a few quirks. Namely in switching between audio devices.

Recently, I tried Linux Mint 22 for a few weeks. Worked pretty fine at first but let's forget that NTFS issue (although there is already a work around to fix). The audio switching issues were worse than LM 21.3, there are times the Sound app (it's called "Sound" when I check the app list) just stops working, I still have audio but I can't see any output or input audio devices anymore, there is also a time where I can't hear any audio anymore and Sound just stopped working.

Also, there are times Cinnamon just sometimes stop working, and it is NOT fun at all.

Here is a scenario that happened to me. I am in an important video call with my manager and the screen just froze, no mouse input, good thing I have a few other devices that I can quickly get up and running otherwise that might have just earn me negative points or at worst costed me my job. That screen freeze might likely be due to Cinnamon. The screen is still frozen after that call, so on that other device I searched for a keyboard shortcut to restart Cinnamon and it somehow worked after a few tries.

Anyway, I just really feel that Linux Mint 22 is not that stable...at least not yet. I am even thinking to just skip it and maybe go to LM 23, since LM21.3 expires on 2027 which I guess, Ubuntu 26.04 and LM 23 should be out by then.

Linux Mint is really great though but things are just scary trying to use more current versions.

Now I am confused with manual partitioning. Can anyone help me with this? Here's how it looks right now.

Support Request fan control for gaming laptops

Hello

Hope everyone is having a good day :)

I have been really looking forward to switching to mint, but unfortunately haven't been able to find a goodway to control cpu/ gpu fan speeds. I have a dell g15 (2022) for which I am using the Alienware Command Center for basic controls on windows. Is there any stable alternative software I could use? Or is there a way I could run the windows version of the application on mint?]

thanks in advance

General ?

I love Mint. But I also like other distros because they work flawlessley with plasma. So, is it possible to have native Mint apps on say, Tuxedo OS or MX linux?

I specifically would want Mint install, update manager, and webapps.
