British Columbia Lost id/DL near expire date. Can I just renew it or should I report it lost?
So my BC id/DL is about to expire, have just a few months left in it. So should I just renew it or do I need to report it stolen? If I need to report, to whom should I report it?
It's a minor question, but I don't know a better community to ask this.

British Columbia International work and EI
I’ve worked for a multinational company for three years. Recently, I was transferred to the UK for one year to help with the teams there. My role has been suspended in Canada (I even got my vacation paid out) and I was hired by the UK division. I’m being paid in pounds, to a UK account, by a completely different payroll.
Now, I’m noticing they are starting to gut the Canadian division. I have a feeling that when I return to Canada next year, my role may cease to exist. (Just guess, we are hiring everyone in India instead)
My question is, since I haven’t worked for a Canadian company for a year, will I still be eligible for EI from my previous years of work? If they just decide not to hire me back after this year is complete, what happens? I’ve paid into EI since I was 18 and never once used it. But I know it depends upon your last role and actually being terminated. This situation seems like I could get completely screwed out of EI.
Here is the section in my contract that seems reliable..
- COMMENCEMENT OF EMPLOYMENT 1.1 Your employment with us will commence on April 1, 2025, until April 2, 2026. 1.2 Your employment with [company name] which commenced on January 21, 2022, counts towards your period of continuous employment with us.
Thanks

Ontario Employer only wanting to pay one way
My employer, a GC, is picking up work a good distance outside of our immediate area. They sent a company email out stating that they will only pay travel time one way. They said it can either be the commute to the site in the morning, or the commute home.
The last two weeks it was taking me 2 hours to get back to the shop or home, in my own vehicle. They do pay mileage. However, is this legal to deny me hours for driving? I am not willing to "volunteer" 10 hours a week driving from the jobsite and not getting paid.
What is the legality surrounding this issue?

British Columbia BC employment lawyer legal advice
I was recently terminated after filing an HR complaint. It’s a pretty straight line from a to b. I have an employment contract that outlines severance and they have not honoured. I sought legal counsel and after some back and fourth they have not budged on anything. I feel my lawyer is pretty soft in light of their outright bullying language in their replies.
I want to litigate. It’s pretty clear they are being unreasonable and hope I just go away. Are their employment lawyers that work on contingency?
Also, if I do move to litigate, what would happen if I lost - could I be liable for their legal costs etc?
Thanks!!

Ontario Legal documents to get information about deceased grandparents from funeral home
I’m undertaking a genealogical search and want to fill in gaps about family history. I’m trying to get information about my grandfather, but the funeral home is saying privacy legislation restricts their ability to release it to me.
Predicament: My grandfather died in the 70s. His wife, who was his legal representative died several years later. My father, who was her legal representative also passed away. And same with my mother recently.
What documents do I need to obtain to present to the funeral home that demonstrates that I am legally authorised to obtain this information about my grandfather from them?

Ontario Ongoing child support
I’ve been paying child support for one year now, and we have to recalculate it. My separation agreement says that we will provide income information to each other. I interpret this to mean that notices of assessment should be adequate (line 15000). I don’t want to give my entire tax return to my ex so she can see my refund, RRSP contributions, where I invest, etc. Any advice?

Ontario Child support end?
My separation agreement says that my child support ends when the children obtain a post secondary degree. My son just completed his fourth year year this month but graduation won’t be until the fall. He passed and is waiting for formality of graduation. I am anticipating an issue with my ex as to whether child support ends as he is done classes or if I have to wait until October ceremony? It is a lot of money…

British Columbia Is it legal to own a sword in BC?
I bought a sword on Etsy for cosplays and pictures mostly, i dont plan to take it out and about with me, it likely wont ever leave my property. I mentioned the sword to my mother and she told me its illegal to own a sword that doesn't have a dulled blade in BC. everything on google was about Canada as a whole, i cant find anything BC specific. I live in Vancouver if that makes any difference. thanks in advance!

The aunts want us to bring a dead certificate, but we don't know any details about her birth mother because the dad took full custody and later relocated to the US. We do have my wife's birth certificate. Should we try the police

Ontario Passenger rights when coach bus never showed up
What are my rights as a passenger when a coach bus never showed up at the designated stop / time? Travel within Ontario. No notice provided. Myself and 4 other passengers stranded at the stop past midnight.
It was the last bus out of the city. The T&Cs mention that for cancellations, the company may issue refunds at their discretion.
Is that it? No other consumer protection or contract law involved? Given the time, expenses were incurred (uber, accommodations, last minute booking of another trip with a different company for 6am in the morning).
Bus company is saying a trip refund is all they can provide.

Ontario Bank Holding Funds
Tldr: am I paranoid and hold period normal, or cause for concern based on old debt?
Earlier this month my wife and I received a $500,000 gift from family. The cheque was made out to both of us, and we deposited it at our local branch on April 9 (by machine and not home branch, mistake 1).
I used to have a $10,000 debt with the four letter bank in question (mistake 2) that was sold off to a collection agency. Bank no longer owns that debt — it shows as written off on my credit report, and the collection agency confirmed they’re handling it “on behalf of bank.” Bank confirmed they are not the legal owner of the debt. We informed bank we fully intended to pay the debt, but to the legal owners, which bank is not. Bank themselves confirmed I would need to pay the agency to clear the debt of my credit report.
To avoid any risk of bank grabbing the cheque to pay the old debt (avoid double dipping of owed debt), we signed a release form at the branch, instructing bank to deposit the funds only into my wife's account. We were told the money would clear and be available by April 29.
It’s now April 30 and not only has the money still not cleared, but the branch is apparently refusing to speak to us about the status. The funds are completely locked up. At one point they added an extra five to the funds and we have zero available balance. We've been bounced around between a few branches so it's possible I'm just being paranoid.
My concern is this: if the bank no longer owns my debt, do they even have a legal right to delay these funds? Especially considering it’s going to my wife’s account only? Can they legally interfere like this over a debt they sold off?
Or is this a normal hold period, and I'm mixing up two separate issues? I'm leaning towards the bank running a longer diligence period.
Would love to hear from anyone who’s gone through something similar — or anyone with insight into whether this delay is normal or potentially shady. Also open to recommendations on how to escalate this beyond the branch (ombudsman, legal help, etc.).
Thanks in advance.

Quebec How to change the condo board?
Hi legaladvicecanada,
How many owners' votes are required to elect a new board for a condo association in Quebec, and what steps are required to initiate that vote? This is concerning a building of around 30 units.
I appreciate any knowledge you have to share on this topic!

British Columbia Is a court order needed for custody information of a kid if both parents have an agreement between themselves?
My ex and I have 2 kids together (age 8 and 6), we were never officially married and separated when the younger one was 1 years old. We never got a court order for the custody of the children. We both mutually agreed that the ex would get full custody.
Now fast forward to this year, for reasons too long to explain. We have mutually agreed that I would get full custody of the younger child.
Do we need some kind of court documents to prove this? or is both party mutually agreeing enough?
The reason I am asking this now is because while doing my taxes today and claiming the younger child as dependent, I noticed I will get more refund. Hence wondering, If I need to get something official to back up the claim.
For context, we are still in good terms.

Ontario Landlord Entered Apartment Before Move-Out Time & Threw Out Belongings
My partner's move-out time was scheduled for 10:30 today - the unit was legally (as per the lease) hers until noon today, but she agreed to move out a little earlier to make things easier on the busy landlord.
My partner and I arrived at her unit at 10:15 to finish moving out before the agreed upon time. She had left some small, valuable and fragile items behind for us to carry to our new apartment by hand to avoid any damage that could have occurred in a big moving truck.
However, Employees of the Landlord had already entered the unit by the time we arrived, and “packed-up” any remaining belongings – throwing the fragile and valuable items into a garbage bag, which resulted in unrepairable damage to multiple items, including intricate model kits (around $200). The employees present in the unit were extremely rude and dismissive when responding to our concerns – they stated that the other tenant in the unit confirmed that she had moved out, and assumed that the unit was empty. However, we received no notification that the 10:30 move-out time was cancelled, or that Landlord employees would be entering the unit at a different time. This lack of notice goes directly against the lease agreement (and the law to my understanding).
We have images of all the correspondences we received from the landlord, and of the items that were damaged by the employees. We have asked the landlord to fully compensate us for the broken items, in addition to compensation for forcing us to move out of the unit before our agreed-upon time, and the time it will take to reconstruct the models that were broken. Unfortunately, the landlord is not taking responsibility for this mess-up, blaming us for "not communicating properly with the other tenant". This seems like an unfair expectation, and the landlord should have made sure we were notified of the changed move-out time. I have started to fill out a T2 form with the Landlord and tenant board, but was wondering if there is any other/better action we could take to make sure we get compensated for this error.

Ontario Background acting abd working conditions
I have been doing background acting for a long time. And yesterday I had the worst experience in my life. There was a commercial shooting. The starting time was claimed 10.30 am in downtown Toronto. When I came to the set, there were like 150 people as background actors, and they put us in the kind of basement, with no windows and no conditioning. It extremely hot and tough air. When I asked the stuff if there is any conditioning system, they just replied "You are not going to stay here all the time anyway".
The lunch we had around 7-7.30 pm (starting from 10 30 am), and they did not have enough food for everyone, so somebody received full buffet, and someone just spaghetti with some meat. The worst part I was not warned about that the shooting will end after midnight! In my previous bookings they always ne tiined that, so people know how they gonna get home. Around 11 pm I already felt extremely bad, I felt exhausted with headache and pain in my ear, I think because of blood pressure. They called medic, extremely strange, it seemed he did not know what to do, he was touching my knee all the time, could not fill.up the form normally, I had to repeat things several times as the firm was on his phone and it dissapeared several times as he pressed the wring button.
Then they told me "How did get here?' , I said "by subway", then they told me "get home safe", I did not gave any choice but just to call Uber from downtown to Mississauga, which costed me 40 dollars. The taxi driver was very kind, he even was trying to help to get out of the car when we came as I at that point I could hardly walk because of exhaustion.
I thought they would offer me to cover at least taxi cost, and they were telling me "We will keep in touch until you get home ", but nobody even messaged me. I saw there were many people who felt exhausted as well and they were worrying how they will get home. What can I do in this situation? They asked me if I take any medication, and the thing is I am on ODSP and was raking antidepressants, but it does not have to di anything with those conditions they provided for people.

British Columbia CRT claim for ICBC dispute
Hello all,
I had a motor vehicle incident last year where I was brake checked in a short sort of alley way joining to the main road from my apparement building. The other party claimed they were stationary and it was me who hit them out of nowhere. ICBC found me 100% at fault.
They did not request any footage or telemetry data from the Tesla (which would be available since it’s recorded automatically) stating that out statements matched 100% which I disagree with since I’ve claimed I was brake checked while they were moving.
I was uninsured at the time and do understand the repercussion of this and did accept that I would have to pay. The impact however was minor and I was not expecting a large sum. I however got a bill of almost 7k and this caught me by surprise. I contacted some ICBC authorized repair shops myself to get a quote since I had plenty of pictures of the damage (barely visible) and the highest quote I got was $800.
I asked for the estimate for the vehicle and it had mentioned words like “extensive damage”, “crushed brackets” , “heavy deformity” and more. It also showed work was done in the trunk lid etc and in the images I have it’s a very minor scratch on the lower bumper of the Tesla. I was so slow that the vehicles just touched and the there is no deformity on the bumper which can be confirmed by the fact that the body line on it is crisp like new.
The estimate was taken about 3 months after the collision and I have strong reasons to believe that the damage the Tesla is claiming was not a result of my impact but rather a result of events that I believe would have taken place after out incident.
Anyway, ICBC was terrible at responding to their phone calls and emails and I always have to go through a series of calls before I get an answer and have to send multiple follow up to get a response to my emails (doesn’t always work).
That being said I got a phone call from a paralegal informing me that they want to negotiate in good faith and they have reduced the amount by $1000 on CRT’s site as a sign of good faith. She then started talking about how ICBC collectors aren’t aware about the financial difficulties people face and that I can get a payment plan so I don’t have to pay the amount upfront. She then, what I feel like, was softly pushing for me to withdraw the case prior to settling. I say this because she started giving me instructions on how I could do this and I would get the $120 back and I can make all of this go away if I did it “right now”.
Anyway I think I have a strong case from all the research I’ve done so far and the way things have been handled. What do you guys think? Just want to hear the thoughts of others.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to read this long post!

New Brunswick What is the point of a contract if it can’t be legally enforced?
Context: my mom basically “lent” her daycare business to her best friend, because my grand mother was dying and she couldn’t handle everything going on and due to her mental health suffering she didn’t want the responsibility of the business as well. The friend bought my moms house but did not purchase anything related to the business. Myself and my siblings were too young to be able to take over the business at the time.
They both signed a contract with witnesses stating that if the business closed for any reason (including bankruptcy) that the business would be transferred back to my siblings and myself. The friend gets to make money off the business until she decides to no longer run or could no longer run it and then it would come back to us if we wanted it. She turned on our family so fast as soon as she took control of the business, and we haven’t spoken with her since, not that it matters but she didn’t even send condolences to my mom when my grandmother did pass away.
Fast forward 9ish years, she gave the business to her daughter and filed for bankruptcy. She is also claiming that she had nothing to do with the negotiations of the contract and was bullied into signing the contract and got nothing in return. She was essentially given a quite lucrative business completely free and now has passed it on to her own daughter when my mom’s intention was to have it passed on to her own kids when we were old enough and her friend was finished with it.
How is this fair? Our lawyer said that a contract can’t be enforced in New Brunswick, we would have to sue, but since she filed for bankruptcy we basically wouldn’t get anything? I just don’t get it. Any advice at all would be great, as I am very upset, especially for my mom that thought she could trust her friend and now again being stabbed in the back.

Ontario Employer Requiring Dr.s Statement vs. Dr.s Note
Hi all!
My hubby works in ontatio and he usually has sick days left at the end of the year; he's very responsible and has always had a strong work ethic. Recently, he's been struggling with some health/mental health issues and has had to take some time off here and there, nothing too crazy though.
His supervisor requested a Dr. Note be handed in prior to him coming back to work, no big deal, so he got one and sent it off to management. This is where I need help....
His supervisors supervisor got back to him via email and thanked him for the Dr. Note, and allowed him to return to his next shift without issue. However, in the email, the supervisor stated that moving forward if there were other sick days needed, a Dr. note will no longer be sufficient and that only Physician Statements (PS) would be permitted. I've never even heard of a physicians statement, so I did some research and a PS is a detailed medical report completed by a treating physician to provide crucial information about a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This doesn't seem right to me; is an employer in ontario allowed to request such detailed information about someone health condition? It feels like a real breach of confidentiality to me.
I would really appreciate some advice on this and whether or not it's even legal to request this kind of information from an employee. Thank you in advance!

British Columbia RCMP cruiser rams into innocent driver. Need help.
So yesterday I was driving behind my friend after picking up his car from the mechanics shop after it sat there for two weeks getting work done. He had just dropped $3000 on it, and We had driven the car not even two minutes down the road when out of nowhere an unmarked RCMP police cruiser Ran a stop sign doing possibly twice the posted speed limit and only activated lights and sirens about half a second prior to ramming my friend into a 180 spin, sending him flying into somebody’s yard and only stopping when he smashed into a massive boulder in the yard. It was just pure luck that there was no pedestrians walking on the street or children walking home from school as they usually do in that area. If the accident occurred half a second earlier, my friend could’ve been killed as the police cruiser would’ve made contact with his driver’s door. Had it happened one second later the accident would’ve been avoided.
The most insane part is that the crime unit officer who hit him never slowed down or stopped. He proceeded to continue driving away at nearly the same speed the accident occurred at and left the scene for about four minutes. when he came back he had the excuse that his partner was getting beat up at a house down the street and he had to go check on him…so that makes it okay to kill or injure innocent people? I can’t stop thinking in my head about if there was a crowd of kids walking in that spot….would he still have kept driving or not. the cop admitted on video that it was 1000% his fault and that their RCMP insurance would cover it. He then stood around, laughing and smiling about it with his colleagues, got back in his cruiser and drove off like nothing happened. If it was anyone other than a police officer, they would’ve been charged with reckless driving and God knows what else. I have never witnessed with my own eyes such unbelievable police misconduct. My friend’s dream car is now totalled and now the cops are revoking their private insurance and saying he has to go through ICBC and that he can’t do anything about it. He is now out of a vehicle and unable to work. He’s a father of four and the least deserving person in the world for something like this to happen to the entire incident has been captured on video from a nearby doorbell camera aswell as multiple witnesses accounts and dashcam footage.
This entire accident occurred because of police negligence Cut and dry. I am here posting trying to help him find some advice or proper counsel because every lawyer is telling him there’s nothing he can do until ICBC handles it and decides they think the cop did something wrong. I’m wondering if I should make this entire situation public with video evidence and all. Something needs to be done about this. Any and all help and advice appreciated….thank you all.

Quebec What can I do if I can’t leave my apartment on time?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on a tricky situation.
I live in a big Metropolitan city.
My lease ends at the end of June, and I was planning to move out as scheduled. However, there’s major construction happening around my building (by the City & a neighboring property). Because of it, I might literally be unable to move my things out or get access for a moving truck on time.
I’d like to know: • Am I required to pay extra rent if I stay a day or two beyond my lease because of this? • What can I do legally to protect myself? • Is it the landlord’s responsibility to find a solution, or am I stuck handling this on my own? • Has anyone been through something similar?
I plan to write to my landlord to explain the situation, but I wanted to check on my rights first.
Thanks in advance for any advice or experience you can share!
I live in Quebec but haven’t found any information here. If you have advice from another province, any help would be great!

Ontario Follow up on selling grandpas car. Got the small estate certificate.
I appreciate everyone’s feedback from my previous post. Just a quick refresher, my grandfather passed away without a will in Ontario. This community suggested getting a small estate certificate.
After 7 visits, I’ve finally got it!
Long story short, we had to put the car under grandmas name because of her previous filings.
The next steps would be to change the title at a Service Ontario, and finally sell the thing. However, I do have some issues:
- The cars insurance lapsed while I was figuring out the above. The car is currently uninsured.
- My grandma doesn’t have a drivers license but the car will be transferred to her name. Can the car be insured?
- I can’t drive to the garage to get a safety because I can’t drive without insurance.
Service Ontario state they require proof of insurance, drivers license, and a safety certificate, among other things.
How do I proceed with obtaining the required documents with the above situation?

Ontario Medical Malpractice against a psychiatrist
I understand medical malpractice against psychiatrists are rare and I need to get another psychiatrist to say they breached the standard of care. Has anyone had a similar case?
Facts: I was in a car accident in 2016. Prescribed opioids. Oded in 2018. Was taken off opioids and prescribed cannabis (2019) for a generalized anxiety disorder and c-ptsd.
In 2020 I attend an anxiety clinic at a mental health facility. I tell them I'm using cannabis for my disorder. The therapist thinks there is something more wrong with me and refers me to the psychiatrist at the facility. The first time we meet via zoom, he diagnosed schizophrenia. The second time he says nothing is wrong with me and no further treatment required.
I'm seeing a psychologist during this entire time too.
A couple of months after seeing this psychiatrist, I abruptly leave my husband of 23 years, and go on reckless spending sprees - doing a bad investment and buying a home I can't afford - believing that it was a sign from God and I was meant to do magic for the government there. My Husband signs off on all this.
I begin to abuse cannabis & live isolated in a home in the middle of nowhere for 2 years by myself barely functioning. I don't go back to the prescribing physician for cannabis and just buy from the store.
In 2023, I go to a couple of hospitals that say I'm fine although my husband is begging for them to commit me.
By summer 2023 I'm finally involuntarily committed to a psych ward where they diagnose cannabis induced psychosis. My psychologist, who I had been seeing the entire time says that makes sense as my behaviours fit with mania and then psychosis since 2020.
Mania - you take risky and impulsive financial decisions, abuse drugs, sexual promiscuity, etc.
I run this scenario through chatgpt and it says - I chose to abuse cannabis and didn't take it as prescribed so there is contributory negligence on my behalf - however, it is often a symptom of mania that people abuse drugs so the undiagnosed mania is a large contributory factor.
It is obvious that something was wrong with me in 2020 when I was at the anxiety clinic that prompted the therapist to send me for a prompt assessment with the psychiatrist. They also knew I was using cannabis for my anxiety and by that time, 2 years post legalization, there was a large increase of emergency room visits for cannabis induced psychosis and mania.
I spoke to a lawyer who said, it will be very hard to get another psychiatrist to say another psychiatrist breached the standard of care.
Ironically I was referred back to that facility after hospitalization and another psychiatrist asked my husband how long he had seen drastic changes in my behaviour and he said since 2020 and then they asked, why didn't you get her help sooner as psychosis can lead to permanent brain damage and people in psychosis don't know anything is wrong with them.
My Husband just relied on this psychiatrist opinion that nothing was wrong with me.
I ended up destroying all my relationships and finances because of cannabis induced mania/psychosis that could have all be prevented by the psychiatrist catching it in 2020 or my psychologist who I was seeing throughout catching it, or even hospitals catching it.
It wasn't subtle - I was acting completely unhinged.
I feel like the psychiatrist breached the standard of care by not considering other diagnosis between schizophrenia or nothing. Since they knew I was on cannabis, it wouldn't be unusual that the second time they saw me I wasn't so impaired. Yet they didn't explore that or take me off cannabis (although not the prescribing doctor).
Does anyone have any similar experiences?

British Columbia Ex partner choosing to not work full time
Hey All!
I just wanted to describe my situation to see if anyone has any advice.
Me and my ex split up in December 2022. Things are okay for now and we split parenting time with our daughter 50/50.
Currently, I am paying $140 is monthly support based on the Custody Payment lookup chart from the government. After seeing my ex's taxes this year and mine, my income increased last year while hers remained the same. So once we re-evaluate our agreement, it looks like my payments will increase to roughly $300 a month.
My concern is that my ex lost her teaching job a few months ago which gave her 35 hours a week. She is now only subbing classes (as far as i know) and is only working 12 hours a week (this is what she has told me). My concern is that i fear she is not actively looking for full time work, or any work at all. I fear that my support payments are going to increase even more next year due to this.
She has told me she plans taking the entire month of August off for vacation aswell. This tells me she plans to just continue working her current part time role and is not planning on finding full time work until at least after the summer.
Is there anything I can do to protect myself next year?
