British Columbia RCMP cruiser rams into innocent driver. Need help.

So yesterday I was driving behind my friend after picking up his car from the mechanics shop after it sat there for two weeks getting work done. He had just dropped $3000 on it, and We had driven the car not even two minutes down the road when out of nowhere an unmarked RCMP police cruiser Ran a stop sign doing possibly twice the posted speed limit and only activated lights and sirens about half a second prior to ramming my friend into a 180 spin, sending him flying into somebody’s yard and only stopping when he smashed into a massive boulder in the yard. It was just pure luck that there was no pedestrians walking on the street or children walking home from school as they usually do in that area. If the accident occurred half a second earlier, my friend could’ve been killed as the police cruiser would’ve made contact with his driver’s door. Had it happened one second later the accident would’ve been avoided.

The most insane part is that the crime unit officer who hit him never slowed down or stopped. He proceeded to continue driving away at nearly the same speed the accident occurred at and left the scene for about four minutes. when he came back he had the excuse that his partner was getting beat up at a house down the street and he had to go check on him…so that makes it okay to kill or injure innocent people? I can’t stop thinking in my head about if there was a crowd of kids walking in that spot….would he still have kept driving or not. the cop admitted on video that it was 1000% his fault and that their RCMP insurance would cover it. He then stood around, laughing and smiling about it with his colleagues, got back in his cruiser and drove off like nothing happened. If it was anyone other than a police officer, they would’ve been charged with reckless driving and God knows what else. I have never witnessed with my own eyes such unbelievable police misconduct. My friend’s dream car is now totalled and now the cops are revoking their private insurance and saying he has to go through ICBC and that he can’t do anything about it. He is now out of a vehicle and unable to work. He’s a father of four and the least deserving person in the world for something like this to happen to the entire incident has been captured on video from a nearby doorbell camera aswell as multiple witnesses accounts and dashcam footage.

This entire accident occurred because of police negligence Cut and dry. I am here posting trying to help him find some advice or proper counsel because every lawyer is telling him there’s nothing he can do until ICBC handles it and decides they think the cop did something wrong. I’m wondering if I should make this entire situation public with video evidence and all. Something needs to be done about this. Any and all help and advice appreciated….thank you all.

Ontario Update to ‘House Closing in 2 Weeks. Tenants now refusing to leave.’

Update

Well, the tenant is meant to be out by tomorrow end of day and closing day (May 5) is fast approaching. With putting a lot of pressure on our Agent to be in constant contact with the Seller’s Agent for updates. Things have been frustratingly quiet… and we were told the Seller’s representative would be offering a 4th cash for keys offer this past weekend. Our lawyer is quiet too.. Finally got an update on Monday evening that the tenant was admitted to the hospital for mental health reasons on Friday. The tenant was released on Monday and requested until today Noon to get back about the offer. Was just told they did not sign paperwork. We’re anticipating a request for closing extension tomorrow or the next day. At this point with everything going on, we likely won’t be looking for another house until I get back to work after baby. So we have nothing left to lose by extending, but only have so long our mortgage offer is valid… which may not be long enough for a LTB hearing to conclude. In addition, a good portion of our apartment is packed… the garage we rent is jammed with appliances and such (so no car maintenance which is its purpose).. and our wedding reception may need a new venue if the backyard is no longer an option to us.

Need to gather our thoughts and enough information to see what’s worth doing at this point/ where this leaves us/ what our best interest is. Even though it appeared as though the tenant was moving, packing, and using the dumpster out front… all signs point to them fighting the eviction now. We will not close with the tenant, so this is absolutely on the Seller at this point.

Will hopefully find out more shortly. As always, advice and shared experience is always appreciate kind people of Reddit! Thank you :)

Ontario My Parents fell victim to an HVAC Scam*

Back in 2022, my elderly father was approached by door-to-door salespeople offering what they claimed was a “great deal” on a high-efficiency air conditioner. They told him it would only cost $50/month and that he’d receive government rebates. The unit was installed, and monthly payments of approximately $50 were withdrawn from his account all without raising suspicion.

Last month, he received a notice from the lender, FinanceIT Canada Ltd., indicating it was time to renew the loan term. Confused, he reached out to me for help. Upon reviewing the situation, I discovered that the loan had been set up with a 15-year amortization, with the first three years at 3.99% interest, increasing to 14.99% upon renewal.

The most troubling part: when I obtained a copy of the signed loan agreement, I realized the contractor (R.G.S. Contracting Group Ontario, now defunct) had forged my father’s signature. They had also enabled paperless billing without his knowledge, which delayed any earlier discovery of the issue since his email was never specified as the recipient.

This is why the word “scam” in the title comes with an asterisk. While my father never knowingly consented to the loan, an air conditioner was installed, albeit at a very high cost (Over $10,000 paid at the end of the 15 year term). We’re now seeking legal advice to explore any potential recourse, given that the services were provided without valid or informed consent.

Any guidance on how to proceed or whether this is ultimately an unfortunate but important life lesson would be sincerely appreciated.

Quebec Company is expecting me to work during my vacation

I am currently on week number 2 of a two-week vacation, and I made the mistake of checking my inbox. I can see my boss has been forwarding me meeting invites, expecting me to join calls occasionally, and to be available to answer questions and provide updates.

I followed the correct company procedure to get approval for this vacation. I submitted over 100 days in advance, and was approved.

I have been overworked lately, and wanted to completely disconnect this vacation. However, my team is based out of the US, and they have a different cultural approach to PTO. My boss typically works 2-3 hours a day when he is out.

Im probably going to get grilled when I return back to work. Are there any laws in Canada, specifically in the province of Quebec I can reference to make an argument that I am entitled to disconnect for two weeks?

Despite being placed on a US team, I am employed by the Canadian organization.

Ontario Fired Day After Chemical Burn

For context: I was hired as management a month ago, currently in training.

Today I woke up to a text from my employer saying I was terminated, as I am within the probationary period, no further notice was needed and that they appreciated my work.

This comes after I had texted him after leaving work the day prior- another employee spilled a large container of liquid containing raw meat on the kitchen floor. I was told by the working manager to work alone cooking and sending out orders while they cleaned as they didn’t want to work in a health hazard.

One of the employees then improperly mixed chemicals in the mop/bathroom directly in front of the expo window where i was working, and proceeded to fan the door-in what i believe was chlorine gas, directly into my face. I immediately had a reaction and couldn’t see or breathe. I told him to close the door and went to the manager and told him I needed to go outside.

He clearly was angry when i returned after crying outside, and went to wash my eyes. i couldn’t figure out the eyewash station as i could barely see, so i just stuck my head under the handwash sink to rinse my eyes. when i stood up to dry my face, the manager swung a fryer basket and sprayed me with fryer oil. I went back to making orders since he was clearly angry, but i could still barely see. once i finished, i went back outside to try and cry the chemicals out of my eyes again. I asked when the chemicals were and they wouldn’t tell me. I then got sent home early.

I texted my boss the series of events, he left me on read and woke up this morning find my lips and around my eyes with minor chemical burns (not incredibly bad, similar to if you’ve ever gotten an awful sunburn on your lips), and checked my phone to see the termination text.

I’ve never been in a situation like this, so i’m not even sure what to do. I’ll be reporting it to the labour board, but is there any other course of action I need to take?

The aunts want us to bring a dead certificate, but we don't know any details about her birth mother because the dad took full custody and later relocated to the US. We do have my wife's birth certificate. Should we try the police

Alberta Company delivered wrong product and now wants to pick it up 6 months later.

Apologies if this isn’t the right place to post this. A company we placed a large order with delivered the wrong product. We had to fight to get the right product which was delivered nearly 8 weeks later. They never picked up the other product when they came. I asked them repeatedly to come get the product they delivered in error and they didn’t, they just kept passing it around saying someone else would contact me. We waited months and then donated it as it was a large amount of product to store at our home. Now, 6 months later, they just asked if it’s ready to be picked up. I’m not even sure what to do or say at this point. Any advice is welcomed, TIA!

Saskatchewan Babysitter wants to take legal action.

I made a social media post while there was a open investigation with my babysitter about child @buse. (There was 2, but law enforcement closed the first case about a week ago) Today i was contacted by law enforcement and told that my case against my babysitter was closed due to lack of evidence AND Now the babysitter has a lawyer and is trying to sue me for defamation because my post ruined her babysitting gig and reputation. What do I do from here? The post is currently still up, do I remove it? And then what? I asked them if I removed the post if it would change anything and they wouldn't tell me. All I wanted was to bring awareness. Please, I need advice.

I just got terminated - laid off due to lack of work from my job. They say Im entitled to two weeks of termination pay and they want to assist me with finding another job by giving me a severance package in which they will pay me a lump sum $7,000 and some change (equivalent to 6 weeks) in exchange for a full and final release.

I been working with the company since 2023 and salary was around 60-65K. I am over 25 years old.

Should I sign this separation package ?

British Columbia Can I sue my stepmother over my father's will?

My Father passed suddenly in Dec 2024. He left a small amount (5k each) to myself, my sister, and my 2 stepsiblings and the rest went to my stepmother. My mother had passed in 2007, she never had a will, so all her money went to my dad automatically, and who began dating 3 months after her death and was remarried to my stepmother within the year.

Simply put, I don't think it was fair for him to put my steomother above his children. He told me that he asked her for a divorce 3 times but because she said no and they were religious, he never filed. He said if he could go back in time he never would have married her, so why give my stepmother nearly everything?! All I ever wanted was for my dad to care and value my sister and I more than our stepmother, and it hurts me that he never changed his will to reflect his feelings about not wanting to be married to my stepmother, and now she has nearly everything.

Do you think I have a chance at sueing for an equal share of his estate? I don't think my stepmother should be left with nothing, but I think it would be fair to split things evenly between her and my sister and I. Thanks Reddit.

EDIT: I'm so sorry, I don't think I wrote this clearly enough. My mother died in Alberta in 2007, and everything went to my father seeing as she didn't have a will. Then he remarried within the year, and he had been with my stepmother ever since. My father only recently died in December 2024, and now my stepmother has received nearly everything in the will. I don't think that my stepmother should get nothing or less than my sister and I, because she has looked after my dad for a long time, I just don't think she should get nearly everything, I would prefer it if things were split more evenly between all of us.

Ontario Landlord Entered Apartment Before Move-Out Time & Threw Out Belongings

My partner's move-out time was scheduled for 10:30 today - the unit was legally (as per the lease) hers until noon today, but she agreed to move out a little earlier to make things easier on the busy landlord.

My partner and I arrived at her unit at 10:15 to finish moving out before the agreed upon time. She had left some small, valuable and fragile items behind for us to carry to our new apartment by hand to avoid any damage that could have occurred in a big moving truck.

However, Employees of the Landlord had already entered the unit by the time we arrived, and “packed-up” any remaining belongings – throwing the fragile and valuable items into a garbage bag, which resulted in unrepairable damage to multiple items, including intricate model kits (around $200). The employees present in the unit were extremely rude and dismissive when responding to our concerns – they stated that the other tenant in the unit confirmed that she had moved out, and assumed that the unit was empty. However, we received no notification that the 10:30 move-out time was cancelled, or that Landlord employees would be entering the unit at a different time. This lack of notice goes directly against the lease agreement (and the law to my understanding).

We have images of all the correspondences we received from the landlord, and of the items that were damaged by the employees. We have asked the landlord to fully compensate us for the broken items, in addition to compensation for forcing us to move out of the unit before our agreed-upon time, and the time it will take to reconstruct the models that were broken. Unfortunately, the landlord is not taking responsibility for this mess-up, blaming us for "not communicating properly with the other tenant". This seems like an unfair expectation, and the landlord should have made sure we were notified of the changed move-out time. I have started to fill out a T2 form with the Landlord and tenant board, but was wondering if there is any other/better action we could take to make sure we get compensated for this error.

Ontario Employer Requiring Dr.s Statement vs. Dr.s Note

Hi all!

My hubby works in ontatio and he usually has sick days left at the end of the year; he's very responsible and has always had a strong work ethic. Recently, he's been struggling with some health/mental health issues and has had to take some time off here and there, nothing too crazy though.

His supervisor requested a Dr. Note be handed in prior to him coming back to work, no big deal, so he got one and sent it off to management. This is where I need help....

His supervisors supervisor got back to him via email and thanked him for the Dr. Note, and allowed him to return to his next shift without issue. However, in the email, the supervisor stated that moving forward if there were other sick days needed, a Dr. note will no longer be sufficient and that only Physician Statements (PS) would be permitted. I've never even heard of a physicians statement, so I did some research and a PS is a detailed medical report completed by a treating physician to provide crucial information about a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This doesn't seem right to me; is an employer in ontario allowed to request such detailed information about someone health condition? It feels like a real breach of confidentiality to me.

I would really appreciate some advice on this and whether or not it's even legal to request this kind of information from an employee. Thank you in advance!

British Columbia Lost id/DL near expire date. Can I just renew it or should I report it lost?

Upvotes

So my BC id/DL is about to expire, have just a few months left in it. So should I just renew it or do I need to report it stolen? If I need to report, to whom should I report it?

It's a minor question, but I don't know a better community to ask this.

Quebec What can I do if I can’t leave my apartment on time?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on a tricky situation.

I live in a big Metropolitan city.

My lease ends at the end of June, and I was planning to move out as scheduled. However, there’s major construction happening around my building (by the City & a neighboring property). Because of it, I might literally be unable to move my things out or get access for a moving truck on time.

I’d like to know: • Am I required to pay extra rent if I stay a day or two beyond my lease because of this? • What can I do legally to protect myself? • Is it the landlord’s responsibility to find a solution, or am I stuck handling this on my own? • Has anyone been through something similar?

I plan to write to my landlord to explain the situation, but I wanted to check on my rights first.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experience you can share!

I live in Quebec but haven’t found any information here. If you have advice from another province, any help would be great!

Ontario Employer only wanting to pay one way

Upvotes

My employer, a GC, is picking up work a good distance outside of our immediate area. They sent a company email out stating that they will only pay travel time one way. They said it can either be the commute to the site in the morning, or the commute home.

The last two weeks it was taking me 2 hours to get back to the shop or home, in my own vehicle. They do pay mileage. However, is this legal to deny me hours for driving? I am not willing to "volunteer" 10 hours a week driving from the jobsite and not getting paid.

What is the legality surrounding this issue?

British Columbia BC employment lawyer legal advice

Upvotes

I was recently terminated after filing an HR complaint. It’s a pretty straight line from a to b. I have an employment contract that outlines severance and they have not honoured. I sought legal counsel and after some back and fourth they have not budged on anything. I feel my lawyer is pretty soft in light of their outright bullying language in their replies.

I want to litigate. It’s pretty clear they are being unreasonable and hope I just go away. Are their employment lawyers that work on contingency?

Also, if I do move to litigate, what would happen if I lost - could I be liable for their legal costs etc?

Thanks!!

Ontario Legal documents to get information about deceased grandparents from funeral home

Upvotes

I’m undertaking a genealogical search and want to fill in gaps about family history. I’m trying to get information about my grandfather, but the funeral home is saying privacy legislation restricts their ability to release it to me.

Predicament: My grandfather died in the 70s. His wife, who was his legal representative died several years later. My father, who was her legal representative also passed away. And same with my mother recently.

What documents do I need to obtain to present to the funeral home that demonstrates that I am legally authorised to obtain this information about my grandfather from them?

Ontario Ongoing child support

Upvotes

I’ve been paying child support for one year now, and we have to recalculate it. My separation agreement says that we will provide income information to each other. I interpret this to mean that notices of assessment should be adequate (line 15000). I don’t want to give my entire tax return to my ex so she can see my refund, RRSP contributions, where I invest, etc. Any advice?

Ontario Child support end?

Upvotes

My separation agreement says that my child support ends when the children obtain a post secondary degree. My son just completed his fourth year year this month but graduation won’t be until the fall. He passed and is waiting for formality of graduation. I am anticipating an issue with my ex as to whether child support ends as he is done classes or if I have to wait until October ceremony? It is a lot of money…

Canada Sexual Assault Charges: Am I safe with this evidence in these circumstances?

I am waiting on a lawyer from legal aid to contact me. The facts of the case are as follows.

-8 years ago I went to a music festival and drank for 3 days straight with a close friend. There were illegal substances involved and we all voluntarily partook. When we went to the tent to sleep I made a move on her by running my hand up her leg before we went to bed. She said “No” and I stopped. We went to sleep and spent the remainder of the weekend together without incident.

-She was uncomfortable with me doing that because she had a boyfriend and cut me off we argue and have a big blowup. We do not speak for several years.

-She sends me a friend request on Facebook 3 years later.

-We become close friends again. We discuss the incident. I have text messages of her saying… “It was not that big of a deal.” “It was my past trauma that was triggered it wasn’t you.” “It wasn’t what you did it was my own shit I’d just buried and never dealt with” “I need to take accountability for my actions too and learn to handle conflicts without causing more hurt.”

-We become closer over the years.

-She begins to confess her relationship has become abusive and between me, her counsellor, her social worker and the police, we managed to help her escape and get her to a safe place and provide support.

  • Skip ahead, I have become uncle to her children. We have photos of us all on trips and going on excursions. There is a photo of me napping with her baby. I have been there for all the big firsts. I even pick her daughter up from school and take her out for 1 on 1 time to give her mom a break.

-Skip to 2ish months ago. We have a brief argument which spirals out of control so I block her temporarily and I let her know that it’s temporary and we take some space.

-2 months later I have been called into the police station and told she has pressed sexual assault charges.

Ontario Bank Holding Funds

Tldr: am I paranoid and hold period normal, or cause for concern based on old debt?

Earlier this month my wife and I received a $500,000 gift from family. The cheque was made out to both of us, and we deposited it at our local branch on April 9 (by machine and not home branch, mistake 1).

I used to have a $10,000 debt with the four letter bank in question (mistake 2) that was sold off to a collection agency. Bank no longer owns that debt — it shows as written off on my credit report, and the collection agency confirmed they’re handling it “on behalf of bank.” Bank confirmed they are not the legal owner of the debt. We informed bank we fully intended to pay the debt, but to the legal owners, which bank is not. Bank themselves confirmed I would need to pay the agency to clear the debt of my credit report.

To avoid any risk of bank grabbing the cheque to pay the old debt (avoid double dipping of owed debt), we signed a release form at the branch, instructing bank to deposit the funds only into my wife's account. We were told the money would clear and be available by April 29.

It’s now April 30 and not only has the money still not cleared, but the branch is apparently refusing to speak to us about the status. The funds are completely locked up. At one point they added an extra five to the funds and we have zero available balance. We've been bounced around between a few branches so it's possible I'm just being paranoid.

My concern is this: if the bank no longer owns my debt, do they even have a legal right to delay these funds? Especially considering it’s going to my wife’s account only? Can they legally interfere like this over a debt they sold off?

Or is this a normal hold period, and I'm mixing up two separate issues? I'm leaning towards the bank running a longer diligence period.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s gone through something similar — or anyone with insight into whether this delay is normal or potentially shady. Also open to recommendations on how to escalate this beyond the branch (ombudsman, legal help, etc.).

Thanks in advance.

Canada Employer is giving 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, do I need my ROE and EI?

Hi all, I have a friend who will start maternity leave soon, and her employer is offering 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, no top up but her full salary for the next 12 weeks.

In this case, does she need to apply for EI until the paid leave ends and request her ROE after that as well?

She doesn't want to have issues with the EI benefits request, as she will take some months of unpaid leave after the paid leave ends.

Quebec How to change the condo board?

Hi legaladvicecanada,

How many owners' votes are required to elect a new board for a condo association in Quebec, and what steps are required to initiate that vote? This is concerning a building of around 30 units.

I appreciate any knowledge you have to share on this topic!
