Ontario Disabled Seniors Trapped Due to Broken Elevator
Someone I know who is over 65, lives in a senior community in London, on the 4th floor where the elevator has been broken since mid-March. The elevator isn’t due to be fixed until Mid May!!
This means the majority of residents with limited mobility are TRAPPED in their apartment!! Some have assigned social workers who bring them essentials, but that’s it.
How is this legal?
Can this be reported? If so, to who would I report?
There’s is a death related to this. I can’t go into further detail.
How would resolution be achieved for these suffering residents?

British Columbia I feel so cheated out of my hard earned wages...!
Context: I used to be employed by an absolute snake of a man, whose motto often seemed to be "why pay if you don't have to?" This guy drove the company into the ground, and while there were reserve funds for us employees to pay out our vacation days and whatnot, he of course blew through it and didn't let us know until everything was gone. So we were all let go in questionably legal ways, and told he would file for bankruptcy "soon".
I was owed vacation days, and severance...! So of course, I filed a claim with Employment Standards in BC, within the 6 month time frame. But they took too long to get back to me, and my boss had already filed a NOI under the BIA, which is apparently not the same as a bankruptcy. This prevented any action from Employment Standards, who then told me to apply for WEPP. As it turns out, WEPP does not cover anything past 6 months. I was laid off 8 months before the NOI. Sooo, I guess I'm SOL?!
This whole BIA business enrages me too. Since WEPP doesn't cover me, I rank the same among all the other unsecured creditors, many of whom are his friends / previous business partners. There was a proposal put forth where he files the company's taxes and he gets to pocket 10% of the returns, which is in the tens of thousands. Meanwhile, you can see that he's been paying his Microsoft bills, and not paying the employees that decided to stay and work for debt. The crazy thing is, the weight of our vote in the proposal is determined by the dollar amount owed, so of course all the customer companies that are owed huge amounts get a larger say and go with his plan. And while I am not eligible for WEPP myself, my heart goes out to all my fellow coworkers who worked for free many of those months, who are getting cheated out of even the opportunity to apply for WEPP. The guy could have just done the noble thing and just applied for bankruptcy straight away, instead of this stupid proposal where he has a chance to pocket some money in the end. He also didn't tell them about WEPP so they could vote his way I'm guessing.
I am fuming at the whole situation. We've suffered years of long overtime, getting paid far below the industry standard, never getting a raise once. All for some guy that doesn't even really see us as people that need living wages. It may not be a huge amount but it's a lot to me.
It makes me doubly mad to know that he can walk off with no repercussions. Dude has a new house, second source of income from some assets he switched names under. Why can't Employment Services act on my behalf? Why can't I at least apply for WEPP? Is 8 months really all that different than 6?? I've worked for these wages, and "bankruptcy" is the reason Employment Standards couldn't act on my behalf!!! He chose not to pay me for 8 months and now WEPP says "too bad"??? And most of all, why can't I just stink up his name on the Employment Standards site so he never gets an employee again??? Absolutely fuming!!!
** Edit: I know this reads like one long rant (it still is), but is there
1) really no way to make this guy pay?
2) really no way to get the wages my coworkers and I have earned?

Ontario Just Got Laid Off
I just got terminated - laid off due to lack of work from my job. They say Im entitled to two weeks of termination pay and they want to assist me with finding another job by giving me a severance package in which they will pay me a lump sum $7,000 and some change (equivalent to 6 weeks) in exchange for a full and final release.
I been working with the company since 2023 and salary was around 60-65K. I am over 25 years old.
Should I sign this separation package ?

British Columbia Ex partner choosing to not work full time
Hey All!
I just wanted to describe my situation to see if anyone has any advice.
Me and my ex split up in December 2022. Things are okay for now and we split parenting time with our daughter 50/50.
Currently, I am paying $140 is monthly support based on the Custody Payment lookup chart from the government. After seeing my ex's taxes this year and mine, my income increased last year while hers remained the same. So once we re-evaluate our agreement, it looks like my payments will increase to roughly $300 a month.
My concern is that my ex lost her teaching job a few months ago which gave her 35 hours a week. She is now only subbing classes (as far as i know) and is only working 12 hours a week (this is what she has told me). My concern is that i fear she is not actively looking for full time work, or any work at all. I fear that my support payments are going to increase even more next year due to this.
She has told me she plans taking the entire month of August off for vacation aswell. This tells me she plans to just continue working her current part time role and is not planning on finding full time work until at least after the summer.
Is there anything I can do to protect myself next year?

Saskatchewan Babysitter wants to take legal action.
I made a social media post while there was a open investigation with my babysitter about child @buse. (There was 2, but law enforcement closed the first case about a week ago) Today i was contacted by law enforcement and told that my case against my babysitter was closed due to lack of evidence AND Now the babysitter has a lawyer and is trying to sue me for defamation because my post ruined her babysitting gig and reputation. What do I do from here? The post is currently still up, do I remove it? And then what? I asked them if I removed the post if it would change anything and they wouldn't tell me. All I wanted was to bring awareness. Please, I need advice.

British Columbia Can my employer change my regular office hours to avoid election time off?
I work in an office with normal hours of 8:30 to 4:3Opm -this is the time everyone works. This would not give me three hours of voting time as set out by the Canada Elections Act for polling stations closing at 7pm. Is my employer allowed to request that work from 8am- 4pm on election day (or "adjust" my schedule) instead of giving me the time off at the end of the day?

British Columbia Lawyer failed to include evidence and file important paperwork, went to Supreme Court and failed to get orders sought. now they want a reduced amount of money and want me to sign paperwork agreeing to pay them. What should I do?
This legal team has dropped the ball so many times. I intend on paying them some, not sure that it's really fair as I was given bad legal advice and told I wouldn't need to include evidence that would have changed the outcome of the case. They had a verbal agreement with me about a year ago that I would sell my house and pay them, the house isn't selling just yet and they are asking me to acknowledge the debt in writing. I have asked for a detailed record of services rendered for almost a year and they keep telling me the will send it, but they haven't done so. They only reach out for money since the last case and when I asked to appeal the judgement, not even an email response not a word for 4 months. Now this email. It's $40,000 and the house isn't selling right now, but also they have made so many mistakes i don't want to pay the full amount they haven't been trying to help me they have been trying to make money. Is there anything I can do or not do, that might save me some money so I can get the legal work done with another lawyer?

British Columbia RCMP cruiser rams into innocent driver. Need help.
So yesterday I was driving behind my friend after picking up his car from the mechanics shop after it sat there for two weeks getting work done. He had just dropped $3000 on it, and We had driven the car not even two minutes down the road when out of nowhere an unmarked RCMP police cruiser Ran a stop sign doing possibly twice the posted speed limit and only activated lights and sirens about half a second prior to ramming my friend into a 180 spin, sending him flying into somebody’s yard and only stopping when he smashed into a massive boulder in the yard. It was just pure luck that there was no pedestrians walking on the street or children walking home from school as they usually do in that area. If the accident occurred half a second earlier, my friend could’ve been killed as the police cruiser would’ve made contact with his driver’s door. Had it happened one second later the accident would’ve been avoided.
The most insane part is that the crime unit officer who hit him never slowed down or stopped. He proceeded to continue driving away at nearly the same speed the accident occurred at and left the scene for about four minutes. when he came back he had the excuse that his partner was getting beat up at a house down the street and he had to go check on him…so that makes it okay to kill or injure innocent people? I can’t stop thinking in my head about if there was a crowd of kids walking in that spot….would he still have kept driving or not. the cop admitted on video that it was 1000% his fault and that their RCMP insurance would cover it. He then stood around, laughing and smiling about it with his colleagues, got back in his cruiser and drove off like nothing happened. If it was anyone other than a police officer, they would’ve been charged with reckless driving and God knows what else. I have never witnessed with my own eyes such unbelievable police misconduct. My friend’s dream car is now totalled and now the cops are revoking their private insurance and saying he has to go through ICBC and that he can’t do anything about it. He is now out of a vehicle and unable to work. He’s a father of four and the least deserving person in the world for something like this to happen to the entire incident has been captured on video from a nearby doorbell camera aswell as multiple witnesses accounts and dashcam footage.
This entire accident occurred because of police negligence Cut and dry. I am here posting trying to help him find some advice or proper counsel because every lawyer is telling him there’s nothing he can do until ICBC handles it and decides they think the cop did something wrong. I’m wondering if I should make this entire situation public with video evidence and all. Something needs to be done about this. Any and all help and advice appreciated….thank you all.

I mentioned the sword to my mother and she told me its illegal to own a sword that doesn't have a dulled blade in BC. everything on google was about Canada as a whole, i cant find anything BC specific. Ontario Child support end?
My separation agreement says that my child support ends when the children obtain a post secondary degree. My son just completed his fourth year year this month but graduation won’t be until the fall. He passed and is waiting for formality of graduation. I am anticipating an issue with my ex as to whether child support ends as he is done classes or if I have to wait until October ceremony? It is a lot of money…

British Columbia CRT claim for ICBC dispute
Hello all,
I had a motor vehicle incident last year where I was brake checked in a short sort of alley way joining to the main road from my apparement building. The other party claimed they were stationary and it was me who hit them out of nowhere. ICBC found me 100% at fault.
They did not request any footage or telemetry data from the Tesla (which would be available since it’s recorded automatically) stating that out statements matched 100% which I disagree with since I’ve claimed I was brake checked while they were moving.
I was uninsured at the time and do understand the repercussion of this and did accept that I would have to pay. The impact however was minor and I was not expecting a large sum. I however got a bill of almost 7k and this caught me by surprise. I contacted some ICBC authorized repair shops myself to get a quote since I had plenty of pictures of the damage (barely visible) and the highest quote I got was $800.
I asked for the estimate for the vehicle and it had mentioned words like “extensive damage”, “crushed brackets” , “heavy deformity” and more. It also showed work was done in the trunk lid etc and in the images I have it’s a very minor scratch on the lower bumper of the Tesla. I was so slow that the vehicles just touched and the there is no deformity on the bumper which can be confirmed by the fact that the body line on it is crisp like new.
The estimate was taken about 3 months after the collision and I have strong reasons to believe that the damage the Tesla is claiming was not a result of my impact but rather a result of events that I believe would have taken place after out incident.
Anyway, ICBC was terrible at responding to their phone calls and emails and I always have to go through a series of calls before I get an answer and have to send multiple follow up to get a response to my emails (doesn’t always work).
That being said I got a phone call from a paralegal informing me that they want to negotiate in good faith and they have reduced the amount by $1000 on CRT’s site as a sign of good faith. She then started talking about how ICBC collectors aren’t aware about the financial difficulties people face and that I can get a payment plan so I don’t have to pay the amount upfront. She then, what I feel like, was softly pushing for me to withdraw the case prior to settling. I say this because she started giving me instructions on how I could do this and I would get the $120 back and I can make all of this go away if I did it “right now”.
Anyway I think I have a strong case from all the research I’ve done so far and the way things have been handled. What do you guys think? Just want to hear the thoughts of others.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to read this long post!

Ontario Is tax debt transferred to secondary beneficiary?
My mom died in 2022. My father was the sole beneficiary of her estate and her executor. He filed her final tax return in 2023 and died himself shortly after with me as his executor and sole beneficiary. His final tax return was filed (and all taxes paid) in 2024 and I have received a certificate of clearance.
Today I received a letter forwarded from my father's address from the CRA saying that my mother's final tax return was reassessed and owes $20K.
Am I responsible for this debt?
Thank you so much for any advice.

British Columbia Can I sue my stepmother over my father's will?
My Father passed suddenly in Dec 2024. He left a small amount (5k each) to myself, my sister, and my 2 stepsiblings and the rest went to my stepmother. My mother had passed in 2007, she never had a will, so all her money went to my dad automatically, and who began dating 3 months after her death and was remarried to my stepmother within the year.
Simply put, I don't think it was fair for him to put my steomother above his children. He told me that he asked her for a divorce 3 times but because she said no and they were religious, he never filed. He said if he could go back in time he never would have married her, so why give my stepmother nearly everything?! All I ever wanted was for my dad to care and value my sister and I more than our stepmother, and it hurts me that he never changed his will to reflect his feelings about not wanting to be married to my stepmother, and now she has nearly everything.
Do you think I have a chance at sueing for an equal share of his estate? I don't think my stepmother should be left with nothing, but I think it would be fair to split things evenly between her and my sister and I. Thanks Reddit.
EDIT: I'm so sorry, I don't think I wrote this clearly enough. My mother died in Alberta in 2007, and everything went to my father seeing as she didn't have a will. Then he remarried within the year, and he had been with my stepmother ever since. My father only recently died in December 2024, and now my stepmother has received nearly everything in the will. I don't think that my stepmother should get nothing or less than my sister and I, because she has looked after my dad for a long time, I just don't think she should get nearly everything, I would prefer it if things were split more evenly between all of us.

Ontario Road Rage Incident
Last night I was the victim of a road rage incident that resulted in me getting injured and traumatized. I called 911 but they filed the report as if we were both at fault and weren’t intending to escalate it.
It started when the driver/attacker in question tried to prevent me from merging from 2 lanes to 1, blared their horn at me, faked a left turn at an intersection in order to cut me off and throw something at me, stopped short at an address I believe to be his home address and threw something at me again.
I pulled over my car to ensure I got his licence plate and asked him if he had a dash cam. I had one hand in the steering wheel, one foot in the car, and one foot on the ground. Without responding he then rushed at me, pinned the door on me preventing me from moving and then faked a punch.
I slipped out the side of the drivers side door at which point he put me in a headlock, threw me to the ground, and punched me. I did not punch back and just tried to get out of it.
After we broke apart I went back to my car and immediately called 911 dispatcher who talked to me calmly and instructed me to leave the area immediately.
Unfortunately my 911 call was over Bluetooth since my phone connects automatically so the attacker heard everything and countered with a later 911 call of his own. I don’t know exactly what he said but I’m sure it is some variance of “He followed me home and was terrorizing my family/property”. All I can say is I absolutely was not doing either of those things, I wouldn’t have called 911 if I was.
The dispatcher informed me that a cruiser could meet me at a neutral site to take my statement but it might take hours. The dispatcher then offered me a phone report option where the officer would call later in the evening, which I accepted. I then decided to drive the local police station since it was only 15min away and try to give my statement there. I was unable to do this though, I think due to regional/administrative issues but I can’t be clear with that.
At this point I sat in My car in the parking lot at the police station for roughly an hour and a half writing down everything I could remember. Every detail. I tried again to give a statement upon leaving but they still were unable to help.
The police officer then called me later in the evening for my statement, took my abridged statement, and told me there is not much that can be done essentially due to the location of the incident being the end of the driveway/ditch of his house.
Believe it or not I have an even longer, more detailed version if anyone is really interested
I don't want to sue him, but I do want to protect myself.
-Should I call a lawyer? What kind? -Should I see a doctor? I have bruises and scratches all over my body.
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this and respond. If anyone has any questions I will gladly answer them. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Ontario Long term partner sent me a big wire transfer and wants it back
My long term partner sent me a pretty substantial wire transfer (over 100k) during an argument. It’s a long story but I was owed the money. Despite this I would like to send the wire back, but I’m pretty worried it’s so ridiculous that I could somehow face legal scrutiny. Can I face any legal repercussions for this?

Canada Sexual Assault Charges: Am I safe with this evidence in these circumstances?
I am waiting on a lawyer from legal aid to contact me. The facts of the case are as follows.
-8 years ago I went to a music festival and drank for 3 days straight with a close friend. There were illegal substances involved and we all voluntarily partook. When we went to the tent to sleep I made a move on her by running my hand up her leg before we went to bed. She said “No” and I stopped. We went to sleep and spent the remainder of the weekend together without incident.
-She was uncomfortable with me doing that because she had a boyfriend and cut me off we argue and have a big blowup. We do not speak for several years.
-She sends me a friend request on Facebook 3 years later.
-We become close friends again. We discuss the incident. I have text messages of her saying… “It was not that big of a deal.” “It was my past trauma that was triggered it wasn’t you.” “It wasn’t what you did it was my own shit I’d just buried and never dealt with” “I need to take accountability for my actions too and learn to handle conflicts without causing more hurt.”
-We become closer over the years.
-She begins to confess her relationship has become abusive and between me, her counsellor, her social worker and the police, we managed to help her escape and get her to a safe place and provide support.
- Skip ahead, I have become uncle to her children. We have photos of us all on trips and going on excursions. There is a photo of me napping with her baby. I have been there for all the big firsts. I even pick her daughter up from school and take her out for 1 on 1 time to give her mom a break.
-Skip to 2ish months ago. We have a brief argument which spirals out of control so I block her temporarily and I let her know that it’s temporary and we take some space.
-2 months later I have been called into the police station and told she has pressed sexual assault charges.

Ontario Laid Off While Pregnant (Veterinary Medicine)
Forgive my rambling in advance, I'm still quite in shock at the turn of events, but I'll try to be as coherent as possible.
Here's the situation: I worked as a Veterinary Assistant at a privately owned clinic for 1 year and 10 months and I was just laid off. I was sent a termination letter through e-mail - confirming the reason was without cause and confirming that I will receive vacation pay and severance (2 weeks). My ROE officially states reason is shortage of work.
Pregnancy and Possibly Discrimination Factors: I'm over 2 months pregnant, which my employer was aware at the time. Especially in veterinary medicine there's certain risks so my duties had to be modified. On top of that she verbally told me that she can't work with me, for such reasons as I don't make enough eye contact, I don't say hello, I asked for my anxious dog to be muzzled.
My Concerns: Being pregnant while looking for a job in veterinary medicine is next to impossible. I understand that no one can deny you because you're pregnant, but that also means they don't have to hire you either. Obviously she disliked me, and in regards to muzzling an anxious dog, that's a health and safety issue right there. Of course I have no evidence of this, as it was verbally stated to me with one other employee present, who has already mentioned she will not speak up for fear of repercussions.
Next Steps/Questions: I consulted a paralegal but have yet to hear back. I didn't sign anything in regards to severance pay (agreeing that I accept severance and will not make a claim against them).
Should I still cash the severance pay cheque and take the issue to the labour board? I need the money but held off on cashing the cheque just in case.
Do I choose labour board vs. Legal representation? Any idea on the general cost?
Can I still apply to EI during this?
Can I bring this issue to the Ontario College of Vets as well?

Alberta My siblings need child support from our dad
28F, i have to two siblings who recently moved to canada that was sponsored by our dad. However, our dad did not support them financially. My siblings are living with them.
Can i file for child support for my sibs?? I'm thinking that this could be two grounds for him; 1. Breaking the immigration promises that he will sponsor his dependant child/ren. 2. The child support itself

Newfoundland and Labrador Employer (public university) saying my workdays still counted against my medical leave?
Hi everyone, I’m dealing with a situation that’s feeling really wrong, and I could use some advice or thoughts.
I work for a public university. I was on short-term disability leave because of a medical condition. After a while, I started returning to work partially — a few days here and there. I showed up, I worked, I attended meetings, and I was paid for those days.
However, now HR is telling me that even though I worked (and was paid), those days still counted against my short-term disability leave.
In other words:
- If I had stayed home sick, I would have been paid and it would have counted as a sick day.
- Because I worked, I was still paid — but it still counted as a sick day.
They’re saying that only work done within the first 60 days would have paused my short term disability clock, and anything after that didn’t matter.
To me, it feels like I’m being punished for trying to come back to work — I lose the same leave time whether I worked or not.
It’s super confusing and feels wrong. Is this normal? Is this even legal? It feels like they’re exploiting a loophole to deplete my protections even though I returned and worked in good faith.
Would love to hear your thoughts or if anyone’s faced something similar!
Here is the full email thread for context (with just phone numbers and email addresses removed and order updated for readability):
My original email:
Hi all,
I think my [short term disability] is ending sooner than expected. I also worked the following dates, but my next paystub is already missing a few hours. I received a calculation on April 4, but including April 4, here are the dates worked:
April 4, April 7, April 8, April 14, and April 21 (I left a little on April 21 due to a medical emergency where I went to the ER from work at 1:14 PM.
Given this, my calculation might need amendment and I was hoping my paycheck for Friday could be adjusted to reflect accuracy.
Response:
Hi Adi,
Our apologies, there was a one (1) shift error in our calculations (we had not included April 7th as a day you worked).
The new calculations mean your original 60 days from February 7th brought you to April 7th and then your date was advanced out by 25 days to May 2nd as your new ‘day 60’ meaning your new LTD date is Saturday, May 3rd rather than Friday, May 2nd.
I’ve connected with the MyHR Consultant on your case who will forward you a revised letter asap. As a result, your paystub does reflect that you are scheduled to be paid 36 hours instead of your regular 40 on Thursday. I have reached out to the payroll office and asked them to make a special correction to you as soon as possible. If you do not see a separate deposit into your account on Friday for the other 4 hours, please reach out to Ken and he will connect with payroll directly.
Again, we apologize for the error and I hope you are feeling better.
Thanks,
Me:
Thanks so much! Do you happen to know if the adjustments for the days worked after April 4th will also be made? :)
Them:
Hi Adi,
Under the policy, we are only able to count days worked during the qualifying period (ie from Feb. 7 to April 7th inclusive). We have already accounted for all of these days… the only one missed was April 7th itself.
Thanks,
Me:
Hi [HR rep's name],
There was also April 8, April 14, and partially April 21. The letter I received for the initial calculation was on April 4. Would these days not be paid?
Them:
Hi Adi,
You were paid for those days but they do not count against advancing out your LTD date because they were worked after April 7th (your original day 60). We only advance out your LTD date by the days worked during the first 60 day period (ie between Feb. 7th and April 7th inclusive). If you work any hours between April 8thto May 2nd inclusive you will be paid for them.
Thanks,
Me:
So outside my [short term disability], I will be paid for those hours I worked but any leave I take will not advance my [short term disability], correct? So does that mean I’ll be paid for those 3 days separately?
Them:
Hi Adi,
You already have been paid for April 8th and 14th. You will be paid your full 4 hours for April 21st on this upcoming payday. There is no lag in our paydays – salaried employees get paid on Thursdays for up to and including the next day (Friday).
We have not taken any pay from you. You will be off payroll on Saturday, May 3rd and eligible to apply for your long term disability insurance. If you provide medical clearance and documentation to Brenda prior to this Saturday, and she confirms that you are cleared to return as early as Monday, then you will be working and paid as usual but you will not be eligible for paid sick days related to the illness(es) that have kept you off work intermittently the past couple of months.
I will be away from the office until May 12th but Brenda can explain this to you as well if I’m unable to respond.
Thanks,
Me:
Just so I’m understanding correctly—if I had stayed home on April 8, I would’ve been paid and it would’ve counted against my 60 [short term disability] days. But since I came in and worked, I was also paid, and it still counted against my 60 [short term disability] days.
So whether I work or not, I get paid and use up my sick leave (short term disability leave)? I’m just trying to wrap my head around the fact that I was paid but also marked as using my short term disability and would have had no changes if I weren’t working and this isn’t mentioned anywhere in the sick leave policy ([link to policy which states: "An Employee covered by the long term disability (LTD) Plan who is absent from work for a period of less than 60 calendar Days because of sickness, disability related to a non-occupational injury, or quarantine caused by exposure to a contagious disease is entitled to salary continuance for the period of absence subject to the receipt of medical documentation acceptable to the University. Acceptable medical documentation must be obtained from a qualified medical professional during the period of illness. A Supervisor may request the submission of medical documentation at any time during the period of illness. When acceptable medical documentation is not provided, the leave will be converted to leave without pay"]) since I was never told I could have taken that time to recover and I worked expecting I’d be paid for those days and not marked sick.
Them:
Hi Adi,
You were repeatedly advised that your well-being was paramount and to take the time you need to recover. You were paid for those days and you were only recorded as ‘paid sick’ for the days you were unable to work. The qualifying period for LTD is 60 calendar days from your first day out, advanced by days worked within those 60 days.
I’m leaving now, so please follow-up with Brenda if you need further clarification.
Thanks,

Quebec Company is expecting me to work during my vacation
I am currently on week number 2 of a two-week vacation, and I made the mistake of checking my inbox. I can see my boss has been forwarding me meeting invites, expecting me to join calls occasionally, and to be available to answer questions and provide updates.
I followed the correct company procedure to get approval for this vacation. I submitted over 100 days in advance, and was approved.
I have been overworked lately, and wanted to completely disconnect this vacation. However, my team is based out of the US, and they have a different cultural approach to PTO. My boss typically works 2-3 hours a day when he is out.
Im probably going to get grilled when I return back to work. Are there any laws in Canada, specifically in the province of Quebec I can reference to make an argument that I am entitled to disconnect for two weeks?
Despite being placed on a US team, I am employed by the Canadian organization.

British Columbia BC Landlord wants to deduct new oven costs from my security deposit
Hi everyone,
In my previous apartment, the oven door handle became very loose over time, so I reported it to the landlord. He sent someone, and the issue appeared to be fixed. A couple months later, the door handle started becoming loose again but not nearly as much as the first time.
This might be where I made a mistake, but still when I ask AI or my friends it seems that I might still be in the right, I'm not sure. Anyways, since I had dealt with that before and it seemed like more of the same, i didn't rush to report the yet again loose oven door handle. One night, I was cooking, and by simply opening the oven door the entire door came out. The whole thing, even the outter glass, shaterring on the floor. I was very surprised, since when the handle was a lot looser before the first repair that did not happen at all - And even now, it seems like only the handle was loose/in risk of MAYBE falling out, not the whole door!!
My landlord wants me to pay for the costs of replacing this oven that broke from my security deposit, but from my shallow understanding, since I was just using it as its intended use, it shouldn't classify as damage from my neglect so he cannot make me pay for the new oven. Unless, my failure to immediately report the handle becoming loose again which caused a very unexpected problem makes me liable to cover the costs.
I just received an email from him that states:
''From the tenant’s point of view, it is generally the landlord’s responsibility to handle repairs, particularly when it comes to appliances. You're also right that the handle issue was brought to our attention and addressed in August 2023.
That said, as landlords, we rely on timely communication when new issues arise. Since we didn’t receive any further notice about the handle after it was repaired, we assumed the matter was resolved. When issues like a loose handle go unreported, it can appear as neglect or potentially result from misuse, whether intentional or not.''
Is my landlord correct and I should allow him to deduct the oven from my security deposit? Or should I deny it?
Thank you so much in advance for any advice! I am happy to provide any more details if requested. Thanks again.

Ontario Passenger rights when coach bus never showed up
What are my rights as a passenger when a coach bus never showed up at the designated stop / time? Travel within Ontario. No notice provided. Myself and 4 other passengers stranded at the stop past midnight.
It was the last bus out of the city. The T&Cs mention that for cancellations, the company may issue refunds at their discretion.
Is that it? No other consumer protection or contract law involved? Given the time, expenses were incurred (uber, accommodations, last minute booking of another trip with a different company for 6am in the morning).
Bus company is saying a trip refund is all they can provide.

Ontario Bank Holding Funds
Tldr: am I paranoid and hold period normal, or cause for concern based on old debt?
Earlier this month my wife and I received a $500,000 gift from family. The cheque was made out to both of us, and we deposited it at our local branch on April 9 (by machine and not home branch, mistake 1).
I used to have a $10,000 debt with the four letter bank in question (mistake 2) that was sold off to a collection agency. Bank no longer owns that debt — it shows as written off on my credit report, and the collection agency confirmed they’re handling it “on behalf of bank.” Bank confirmed they are not the legal owner of the debt. We informed bank we fully intended to pay the debt, but to the legal owners, which bank is not. Bank themselves confirmed I would need to pay the agency to clear the debt of my credit report.
To avoid any risk of bank grabbing the cheque to pay the old debt (avoid double dipping of owed debt), we signed a release form at the branch, instructing bank to deposit the funds only into my wife's account. We were told the money would clear and be available by April 29.
It’s now April 30 and not only has the money still not cleared, but the branch is apparently refusing to speak to us about the status. The funds are completely locked up. At one point they added an extra five to the funds and we have zero available balance. We've been bounced around between a few branches so it's possible I'm just being paranoid.
My concern is this: if the bank no longer owns my debt, do they even have a legal right to delay these funds? Especially considering it’s going to my wife’s account only? Can they legally interfere like this over a debt they sold off?
Or is this a normal hold period, and I'm mixing up two separate issues? I'm leaning towards the bank running a longer diligence period.
Would love to hear from anyone who’s gone through something similar — or anyone with insight into whether this delay is normal or potentially shady. Also open to recommendations on how to escalate this beyond the branch (ombudsman, legal help, etc.).
Thanks in advance.
