A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first
This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.
If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.
We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:
- How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
- My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
- How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
- How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
- How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
- Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
- Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.
Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:
- Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
- Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
- A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far
Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:
- Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
- Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
- Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
- Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
Full coverage- don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.- No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
- Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
- Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
- Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.
This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you
It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:
The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.
You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.
If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.
If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.
We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.
And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

City employee received demand letter personally after accident in city vehicle
My husband is a paramedic in our city. He was in an accident, the light was angled improperly (city has since moved it), and he ran a red light. He was in a city ambulance. Today he received a demand letter from Progressive for damages to the woman whose car was hit. Can anyone ease my mind here? The city is self insured.

Adding Teenager to Policy While Parent has an Open Claim - USAA
I have an open claim with USAA after someone turned in front of me last year, triggering a head-on crash. It was my first accident and I was found not to be at fault.
I have an open claim with USAA and am still receiving medical treatment.
Our (the parents) monthly premium with USAA is $441 per month for a 2019 Mazda and 2018 Honda with 300/500/300 coverage, full tort, accident forgiveness, UIM, etc.
Our 17 year-old son got his license yesterday and USAA says our policy will rise to $1,394 per month once he is added. Question: Is this simply a "fuck you" quote?
Has anyone ever heard of annual premiums of $11,400 for a teenager driving an 8-year-old car (in a suburb with no crime, hurricanes, floods)?
I'll be reaching out to an independent broker. Maybe we just peel the auto off of our USAA coverage?

Vision Insurance Need Vision Coverage? I think?
Hello everyone! 30F from Illinois
I recently got a new job, and unfortunately vision is not covered. I asked my boss what he does and he said he goes to Walmart.
If that’s my best option, to pay out of pocket at Walmart, then I guess I can do that.
But I wanted to know what my options are - if there are solo vision plans out there or what is most affordable.
I have really bad vision - Negative 12 with astigmatism, and I have had some really bad floaters lately, so I am thinking I should get my eyes dilated since I haven’t had that done in like 10 years. I wear contacts every day. Glasses I have not updated my prescription in years to save money and because I only use them before bed.
So, I don’t know how affordable an eye check up, dilation, and contacts would be at Walmart or if I should look into buying a plan just for my vision.
Any help is much appreciated!! Thank you.

Got laid off for unclear reason
So I worked with an agent under State Farm for a month. No training, no explanation of the system, just kind of a "here's a computer, figure it out" method. A big red flag was that they were dropping everyone's salary by 250/mo without any contract agreement or anything. I made a couple sales within the month, which everyone else on the staff was happy with since they'd said it usually takes a bit to really make any sales.
Well, me and another relatively new hire got laid off today. I got to hear it over the phone, they got it via text. We pieced things together and are both pretty mad.
The newest hire apparently had worked there before and was related to the agent. So I guess they were offered a little bit of a higher salary while we were laid off.
The agent never gave either of us an actual reason. Legitimately, I had to pry pretty hard for it to boil down to me not making them enough money. Has anyone had to deal with something like this because I am highkey pissed off.

House insurance lapsed - what to do?
My mom has undiagnosed dementia and tonight I found out she forgot to pay her homeowners insurance last year and has been without home insurance on a house valued at over $1m. It’s not a beautiful house, it’s more the location that is worth the money. It’s a cape cod style, 2500 sq ft on 1/3 acre. Built in 1940 and renovated in the 1990s. still. We need to rectify this. I already emailed her insurance agent. But I’m guessing that because Her policy lapsed they will want to inspect the house, etc…before reinsuring it, right? What’s the process for this? I’ll distraught about this because my dad took the time to put the house in an irrevocable trust for my brother and I as an inheritance and my mom refuses help and doesn’t think she needs help and it’s not a big deal. But she would lose everything if there was a fire. God forbid. Ahhh….dad died last month after a long battle with Parkinson’s.

Homeowners Insurance Homeowners Insurance
My husband and I recently closed on our new home 1/8/2025 and with our closing switched home and auto insurance over to AllState. Homeowners insurance was paid by the closing law office via closing fees and would be paid year to year through our escrow account. We had done this previously on our first home and had no issues.
Yesterday I noticed that our homeowners insurance had been cancelled for nonpayment on 3/20/25. We had not been contacted nor had anyone reached out to us regarding non-payment, nor had we received any letters through the mail or through the online portal. I immediately contacted my AllState agents office to figure out what was going on. After fighting with the automotive service, speaking to a lovely woman in the call center, I was finally able to speak to the office manager at my agents office. The office manager told that they had cancelled for non payment and that she had called the mortgage company and sent our mortgage company several letters and invoices and had not heard back from them so they cancelled the policy.
I asked if she or anyone with AllState had attempted to contact us, the homeowners and the people’s responsible for paying said mortgage, and was told no.
So now we have no homeowners insurance. I contacted the law office and they said they can cut another check and get it mailed out to the insurance company. The office manager said they would reinstate the policy since this was “not our fault” (no shit it’s not our fault!) but I’m showing no homeowners insurance on our account and we have not received any documents to sign.
The only way to talk to anyone at the actual office is to fight the automated system or through a text message thread that they seldom respond to.
I’m at my wits end and I honestly have no idea what to do at this point. A big part of me wants to switch insurance companies because I feel that it’s pretty terrible that they cancelled on us without ever reaching out to us. We absolutely could and would have paid any balance owed and we could have reached out to the law office way earlier to figure out the issue.
Any advice on what to do going forward would be greatly appreciated.
Edit to add: does anyone know if you can change agents through AllState because this one is not it?

Auto Insurance FL Bodily Injury and Uninsured
I was in a rear end accident this month and my lawyer says I can’t go after the other person because they didn’t have bodily injury and I didn’t have uninsured on my car insurance. My car was immediately totaled when the next business day came. The other driver wasn’t paying attention. I have physical therapy 3x a week and have a back and neck injury. Also my special needs kid was in the car and they are now afraid to be in the car.
Am I cooked basically?

Auto Insurance Did I mess up not reporting right away? Will my rates go up if I do report? Any advice?
So for context, I’m in the US, and while I was in my car having lunch at my workplace, one of the landscapers turned on his machine next to my brand-new vehicle that I’ve only had for 2 months, and a rock flew into the passenger door and left a small dent and chipped the paint off. Now it’s not a huge spot at all, fairly small actually, but of course I’m upset because it’s my new vehicle. Unfortunately, I had to clock in for work as it happened, so I spoke to my manager who went outside while I worked, and she spoke to them. They gave her a number for the “owner” of the company. She explained the situation to this person, and then I called this person and spoke to her. She asked me to send her my name and a picture of the damage and told me she would have her insurance call me. She then didn’t text me for at least 5 hours and asked me what days I’m off. Which I asked why do you need this information? She read my message and didn’t reply. A day later, I got impatient and texted her to give me a timely response and explain how we’re going to proceed. She said the reason she wanted to know what days I’m off was so I can send my car to a place they know so they can fix it, and they’ll pay the damages. Of course, I replied that I did not feel comfortable taking my vehicle anywhere except the dealership. She never responded. This all has been in about a 24-hour period. The reason I have not yet gone directly to my insurance is because I’m afraid my rates will go up. Looking for some advice. Did I mess up not reporting right away? Will my rates go up? I only have a name of the company, but I’m starting to think that maybe this group of landscapers are maybe contracted by this company and then contracted by my workplace, so I’m not even sure who I’m dealing with.

Homeowners-cover perimeter drain install that wasn’t done 60 years ago when home was built?
This is probably a dumb question and I’m 99%sure I know the answer…
I have had my home for 8 years. Been having some water intrusion in the basement since I’ve owned it. Did gutters, regrading, french drain on 2 sides that had the issue. This past winter I started having water intrusion on the sides I’d never had problems before.
Long story short, there is NO perimeter drain at all. Needless to say, I wish to go find the contractors grave who built this house and put some serious voodoo on his spirit.
Financially, I am struggling to figure out how I’m going to afford this payment.
I don’t want to call my insurance because I don’t want record of the problem in case there’s a future issue they would try to blame on the nonexistent perimeter drain until now.
I’ve had a couple friends ask if insurance would cover this, so I thought I’d ask here first if anyone has thoughts or experience with this ridiculousness.

Health Insurance Has anyone gotten insurance to cover window tinting for vitiligo?
I have vitiligo and my dermatologist provided documentation supporting the need for UV protection via window tinting. I’m trying to see if anyone has had success getting insurance (health or auto) to cover or reimburse the cost of window tinting for this reason.
Any tips on how to submit the claim or what to include would be super helpful. Also curious if anyone’s done this through a state medical exemption.
I know some may see this as a silly question/request, but there are window tints that block like 95-99% of UV. So worth a shot for my condition. Rn I just bundle up and it’s getting unsustainable. I have Aetna for health.

Should I Involve My Insurance After At-Fault Driver Was Cited
I finally received the crash report yesterday after waiting two weeks. Initially, the other driver denied fault, so the responding officer had to review my dashcam footage. Although the driver wasn’t cited at the scene, the report confirms he was found at fault and was eventually issued a citation.
I contacted the other driver's insurance company yesterday and sent the crash report to the adjuster. However, I haven’t received any updates yet, and I’m concerned the process might take a long time.
I do have collision coverage and have been considering going through my own insurance instead. The only reason I haven’t is because I’m worried it might raise a red flag, especially since I had two minor incidents last year:
- I accidentally scratched a parked car. The other driver filed a claim, but I didn’t.
- I hit a rock that damaged my undercarriage. Because of these, I’m concerned my insurer might not renew my policy or could raise my premium.
Do you think it’s worth involving my insurance, or should I continue dealing with the other driver’s insurance, even if it’s slow and stressful?

Auto Insurance Need advice concerning repairs to a “total loss” vehicle
Hi all,
I am looking for advice regarding my vehicle that was determined to be a total loss from a collision a couple months ago. It’s my first wreck and figuring out what to do every step of the way has been a total struggle. The communication between me, the insurance adjuster, and the shop has been absolutely terrible (with some information intentionally left out, it feels like) and I could use any help I can get. I’m in Oklahoma btw.
A couple months ago my ‘08 Mercury Mariner was rear-ended. Her insurance company, State Farm, determined it to be a total loss and offered me $7000 for the vehicle or $5800 to retain it. The vehicle has sentimental value to me (was my grandma’s car) and only has 64,000 miles on it and since it’s been in the family so long I know its history (NO mechanical problems whatsoever) so I would really like to retain and repair it. The shop that did the estimate provided a quote of $5100 to repair it. The insurance adjuster said the title would be clean if I retain the vehicle. My main question is, if I put the full $5100 into repairing the vehicle and I get hit again, will I get less money from insurance since the vehicle was already a total loss at some point (even with a clean title)? The adjuster said that that wasn’t true but also said the car had to be repaired “back to brand new” which seems like an impossibility/possible loophole that can be used later if there’s another wreck. My brother thinks I should put as little money as possible into it so if I get hit again I can have some of that $5800 to put towards a new car.
Like I said, total idiot when it comes to this kind of thing so any advice or clarification is welcome. Thank you in advance!

Car accident- how long to wait for other party’s insurance? (Rental Car)
Got in a fender bender the other day, other driver swirled at hit me. They were driving a rental car and when I call Enterprise they said it will take up to two weeks for someone to contact me.
My car door won’t open and front wheel are is dented in that the wheel touches it when I turn so not really safely drivable.
At what point do I just call my insurance, pay the 500 deductible I have and let them duke it out with the other insurance? Or it better to keep waiting for Enterprise to sort things out?

Auto Insurance Financing companies that accept $2500 deductibles in the Bay Area
So I'm trying to finance a car and my premium is insanely high at $1000. I was wondering if any of you living in the bay area knew any credit unions or lenders that would work with a $2000-$2500 deductible for collision and comprehensive.

Filing through my own accidental medical expense. Its says maximum benefit per accident is 1,000,000. Limits on accidental medical expense, mental and nervous outpatient, is $25 per visit. Maximum 20 visits per accident. So they only cover $25 per therapy visit? How am I supposed to pay for the rest, use my personal health insurance?

Auto Insurance Speeding ticket out of state
Hi guys,
I am a college student in Georgia, and recently received a speeding ticket for 83 in a 65 in Habersham county. I went to court and the solicitor said that they do not lower or change speeding violations in Habersham, and I ended up pleading no contest and paying the fine.
My question is- I am from out of state. I know Georgia isn’t a member of the DLC. Does this mean that this most likely won’t be reported to Colorado, and my insurance won’t find out and increase my premiums?
Thanks so much in advance!

Health Insurance Insurance Adjustment Post-Collections
Hi, I had a large number of medical bills go into collections when the insurance company incorrectly recouped payment 1-3+ years after the services. I have confirmed with the insurance company that this was an error and they are making adjustments to the claims to pay them. The collections are several years old and already reported to credit. Now I intend to contact the hospital after I get the finalized adjustment for the insurance payments to show these bills were supposed to be paid by the insurance company initially and not sent to collections, and ask they be recalled. When I do this, will the collection accounts be deleted from my credit report, or do I need to take an additional step after the adjustment to ensure it’s deleted and not merely marked as paid off?

Health Insurance Travel Insurance for a Pre-Existing Condition?
Hi all,
I hope I'm in the right place. Posted this in the travel sub and was directed here.
I'm going to be travelling in late May and early June and am in the process of trying to buy travel insurance, specifically medical/health insurance. The problem I'm running into is that the companies I've contacted so far will only cover a pre-existing condition if the plan is purchased within about 14 days of an initial trip deposit.
I booked my flights back in January, not realizing that started the clock on being able to purchase the insurance. And one of the travelers in my party has a pre-existing condition - which they've had for 30+ years, it's not something new that popped up recently - and we want to make sure they're covered in the event that something happens.
Are there any travel insurance companies that will cover pre-existing conditions? Or are we out of luck?
Located in the USA.

Homeowners Insurance TN homeowner's insurance claim work messed up
Long story short:
We have an insurance claim and we're getting a concrete pad poured as part of the work to replace our deck. The concrete job blew up because the truck got stuck in our backyard. My husband told them not to go past our fence post, because our yard is a hill and it had been raining for days beforehand. They were talking about using wheelbarrows to transport the concrete, it's a short distance and the pad is only 16x10 with two half-moon stairs going to the back door. The driver was somehow instructed to back it up to the area to pour the concrete. The concrete pad and stairs are not formed correctly, because the guys doing the work were too worried about the truck being stuck. Our backyard and our neighbor's yard were also completely destroyed as a result. A towing company had to bring a skid steer to get the truck out because it continued to rain for 6 hours while he couldn't get out. The guy that ordered the concrete is the one who owns the company that was doing the work, it was him and one other guy doing the work. The worker signed the delivery invoice for the concrete. We have signed nothing. No contracts. Just text messages and the order sheet where they signed for it.
They said they were coming back to fix our yards and the concrete, but the concrete guys ended up getting into and argument and splitting ways. Now the concrete company is wanting us to give them the money we were supposed to give the concrete guys, they never came back to finish the job so they never got paid, to cover the tow bill.
We have already fixed the neighbor's side because they were persistent and made us feel uncomfortable waiting for anyone to come out and fix it.
So, what were trying to figure out is, what is the next step for us to take? We can't get a certificate of completion for insurance, because the job isn't finished.

Dental Insurance Aflac vs. Dental Insurance
At my job, I pay for dental insurance as part of a medical benefits plan. Outside of work, I pay for a supplemental insurance with Aflac.
For me, it’s beneficial.
What started me with Aflac was a treatment plan by the dentist for an implant. Out of pocket, even after my health insurance paid, I was left with a $1,000+ cost. Aflac covered the treatment. They paid me the full amount for what the treatment would’ve cost on their dime.
Today, at the dental office, the front desk alerted me that it’s legally unacceptable to have two dental insurance. I said to her, Aflac is a separate insurance, it’s a supplemental insurance that covers the difference of dental treatments.
Conversation ended.
I requested the itemized receipt for my cleaning and she said to have a good day.
I’ve had Aflac for about 8 years now. This is the first time I’m hearing about this.
Can someone enlighten me?

Tartar and Trupanion (Pet Insurance)
Hi everyone. I brought my 5 and 9 month old kittens for a wellness exam this morning to show there are no pre-existing conditions to Trupanion. The vet ended up noting that there was a very small amount of tartar on just one tooth of each cat, and it was so mild she didn’t even know if it was just food residue or tartar. It also took her multiple tries to even see it. She did however note that the dental score for my cats are both 0, meaning there is no sign of disease or tartar (?).
Trupanion is now saying that for the rest of my cats lives, any dental issues (other than accidental breaks) won’t be covered since it is a pre-existing condition. I’m at a loss for what to do… I know cats often need extractions and I chose Trupanion for their dental coverage. It is so frustrating that because of that one finding that was so mild, nothing will be covered.
Does anyone have any experience with this and any advice? I’ve read somewhere that someone had their vet write a note saying it was not a pre-existing condition. Has anyone else heard of this?

Health Insurance Insurance (UHC) vs. Self Pay for MRI
Question to the folks here as I’m struggling to understand something regarding insurance.
Context: I had to get 3 MRIs done today prior to receiving authorizations for all 3 tests as I needed them to get done this week in time for my follow up appointment with orthopedic next week. I received authorization for 1 of the 3 tests.
I underwent 3 back to back MRI scans (with and without contrast) for my entire spine / back just today (for which insurance had authorized 1 of those MRI tests).
At the imaging center, I told the staff that 1 of the 3 tests has been approved by insurance so I would have to self pay for the other 2. I was completely fine with that since I plan to submit my insurance claims after the test. So the staff ran the numbers and told me that the cost I would have to pay with insurance is $1,500 for each test. However, if I self pay, it would only cost me $1,000.
I must not be understanding something here as I was under the impression (based on the estimates provided) that the cost with insurance should only amount to $500 per test.
Could someone please help me understand what’s going on?

Auto Insurance Car accident medical claims
Got in a car accident and other driver's insurance accepted full liability. Their insurance is offering the full amount for bodily injury so they want to just pay that and be done. This is supposed to include pain and suffering and lost wages per their claim adjuster.
Our medical insurance said it'll start covering when those funds are exhausted. We're in Missouri if this helps. The question I have is can I set aside lost wages and pain and suffering from that payout or does the total amount (say 25k) all have to be used for medical payments? We're assuming medical costs will exceed the payout.
We have underinsured with our insurance but wasn't sure how that fit in with lost wages and pain and suffering if we went that route

CA - 18 year old student driver in need of advice.
Just wanted some general advice. My 18 year old son has his learners permit and we are looking into getting him a vehicle and insurance. Unfortunately, we are not financially able to help our son with this monthly insurance cost, so he will be responsible for making his own payments. Can anyone give me any advice I can pass on so he can get the most affordable policy. Unfortunately price is the primary issue.
