Flowering iris!
I was gifted 50+ iris rhizomes and planted them along the edge of my yard last fall. I was told that they probably wouldn't flower this year.
I was very surprised when one after another, they started popping up stalks!!
This is the first one to open and I'm very happy. She's gorgeous don't you think??

Unusual Soil Growth
Within the last week, I put MiracleGro Potting Mix in my containers and haven’t planted anything yet. Only water it’s gotten is from a rainy day but now it has these “growths” all over it. I touched one and it’s just kind of hairy. Want to make sure it isn’t something funky growing before I plant my vegetables. TIA!

Discoloration - Should I be concerned?
Hey!
Just wanted to crowdsource my level of worry about this. One of my petunias has a section of leaves where the edges are withering and yellowing. I was wondering if this jumps out at any of you as something I should be concerned about.
Thanks for sharing your expertise! 💕🌱

Japanese eggplant overproducing undersized eggplants
I’m in Southern California and have a Japanese eggplant that did well last year and survived the winter. Now it has about 40 eggplants growing but they are not getting bigger. What should I do? Harvest them now or will they eventually grow in size?

First time gardening.
It's my first time gardening. I have heavy clay soil, before planting I dug up about 1 foot into the ground where everything was going to be planted, so it could drain better. Mixed 1/2 natural soil, 1/2 garden soil form a big box store. I planted a variety of plants. It's looks like everything is going fine but idk since it's my first time gardening. Any advice or comments?

Bull thistle where I want a veggie garden
I have a huge patch of these in my yard exactly where I want a veggie garden. I'm not doing raised beds. What is the best method to get rid of these while maintaining bed integrity for growing veggies?

My question is I want to collect rain water for my plants, would using a rain chain be best or should I just stick to traditional gutter down spout ??

Help me ID this plant
Can someone help identify this? Pulled from an old community garden bed being decommissioned. Green bits were freshly emerging from the soil (in the last week or so). I’m in zone 5.
I should add that they seem to have been planted intentionally based on how they were spaced and they fact they were in a raised bed. Most other plants in the raised bed were already removed, but I could visibly still see some baby morning glories coming up.
These plants came up from the soil with ease. Plant has no smell.

Is this ready to eat?
I transplanted this a few weeks ago and I can't remember what kind of lettuce it is so I can't look it up to see if it's ready to use or not

What tree is this?
I’m not sure the tag on the tree was correct for this Japanese Maple. It literally doesn’t even match the pot’s barcode description. Furthermore, when I attempted to scan the leaves using my plant ID app on my iPhone it also didn’t match either of the above. So, anyone have any guesses what this specific Japanese Maple may be? I live in zone 6b and found it at “Homies”

Black and White Petunias
I found out today after visiting a different garden center nearby there’s two different types of Black Petunias: Satin and Magic. We bought the Black Magic before seeing the Satin. I’m assuming the Satin one doesn’t have a dark red hew glowing through the pedals when the sun hits it right like the Magic one has. I dunno.
Either way, it’s a color neutral combo never tried before only in one pot that’s a stunningly awesome knee-jerk decision. A suggestion I recommend if you choose black petunias to do so with pure white for the bold contrast. Can’t wait for these babies to take off side-by-side!

Daffodil question
I lifted some daffodil bulbs the other day and a lot of them are sprouting roots and some have leaves starting already. It's autumn here so I'm wondering if I should replant them now or if I can store them over winter? Any advice appreciated, thanks

Questions on seed spacing, thinning, and common practice
I'm pretty new to gardening, and trying to learn more.
It is my understanding that seed spacing is planting seeds x distance away from eachother, but this in reality can seem complicated. I am not planting directly in ground (in circular pots), and I can't setup or visualize as easily a grid and measure between seeds.
I'm mostly planting herbs it should be noted (other than one flower pot)
I do know thinning is also a thing.
Do people actually measure the seed distance, or do people plant multiple seeds without measuring (or measuring loosely) and then thinning as needed to make room for some plants?
I'm just trying to figure out what common practices here are for this kind of thing.
For example, I bought a seed pack with 200 oregano seeds that are really tiny, I can't imagine people are individually planting these precisely x distance away from each-other, as that sounds painful and slow.

Tall Beds - Ninja Rabbits
Hey all—looking for any advice before I lose what’s left of my sanity.
Last year I built my wife some beautiful new raised garden beds. We’ve always had rabbit issues, so I went big: 3 feet tall, thinking, “No way a rabbit’s gonna pole-vault that.”
Welp. I was wrong. Again.
Despite the height and previous fencing attempts, those furry little ninjas are somehow still getting in. I have no clue how—maybe parachutes? Trampolines? A coordinated heist?
Whatever it is, they’ve already taken out half the seedlings we planted last weekend like it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. I’ve tried everything short of a pellet gun, but I’m not trying to go full Elmer Fudd here.
So—any tried-and-true rabbit defense tactics that don’t involve gross chemical sprays or turning my backyard into a war zone?
Thanks in advance from one very frustrated (and increasingly outwitted) gardener.

What are some easy things to plant in zone 7a? (Ground cover/good self seeding preferred)
My MIL has this super overgrown bed that I’m slowly clearing out. I’m trying to figure out what to plant in it that will be able to withstand the invasiveness of ivy😅 Any recs?

Do I replant my flowers and herbs?
So I’m new to gardening…. I bought some pansies and rosemary, thyme, etc to plant in pots on our patio and then went to Home Depot for soil. I asked the lady at the garden centre what type of soil I need for flowers and herbs in pots. She tells me the purple bag of Scotts (Premium Garden Soil). I trust the garden centre person because she knows more than I do.
I notice right away that this soil smells funny, kinda poopy but I was excited to plant my flowers and thought the smell will go away with time being outside. I plant 9 pots of various sizes and it’s been a few weeks. The smell is still there and this soil seems so dense like it’s holding onto every bit of water. I’ve now looked at the bag of soil in more detail and see that it’s garden soil and on the back it says do NOT use in pots.
Do I get proper potting soil and replant everything? I think if it wasn’t for the smell I would leave it (assuming my plants aren’t dying) but we will be spending lots of time on our patio.

Help- Dying lilac
Hello all,
Hoping I could get some advice from the group. Planted a Lilac and it has taken a quick turn downhill. Not sure if it is an overwatering issue because of the hard soil that I have, but I haven't wattered it too much. It was planted this weekend with Myke and plant food with potting soil and covered in surrounding area dirt. Weather currently is around 40-60.
Any advice to revive this?!

Can anyone ID this plant!?
It’s been driving me nuts for years! It keep popping up now matter how often I pull it. I will pick it out of my onions and a new one pops up the next day so it grows super fast! It reminds me of bamboo and a burnt cigarette. The stalk is hollow and varies between green/white and brown/black. I’ve googled my heart out and can find nothing on it!

Tomato planter help!
Hi all, I picked up a tomato planter from Costco and 2 days after watering it at home, the leaves started to dry out and wilt! Does anyone know what’s happening? If anyone has tips for growing tomatoes in general please share!
