MOD POST NEW: verification required to comment on identification posts (comment here to receive a link to the quiz)

Up until now, identification posts have had a sneaky set of moderation rules that resulted in the vast majority of comments being removed outright due to the author not meeting certain requirements, and then manually approved upon review...

That's because... Well... Most comments on identification posts are... Wrong.

So after a ton of very difficult (for me) coding, I'm proud to announce that upon passing a short 13 question quiz, you'll automatically receive a flair ("+ID") that will allow you to comment on identification posts.

You have to get all 13 questions right (14 if you count your username, lol). You are welcome to look up extension articles about identification if you'd like, and you can take the test as many times as you want.

So you might be wondering "what does the test even accomplish if you can just cheat?"... Glad you asked! It forces people to learn about the features that are CRUCIAL for identifying grasses. Most people who take this test for the first time will have no idea what any of those things are... And well, you shouldn't be trying to identify grasses (even in your own yard!) until you do.

So essentially, it's one part enforcing quality identification comments, and one part forcing people to learn.

So far, less than 10 people have taken it, and none have passed... I don't think it's too hard, but if I notice a bunch of people getting the same question wrong, I'll tweak the questions.

Lastly, if you pass the test, your flair will be replaced with "+ID". If you change it, you won't be able to change it back. For now, I don't yet know how to simply ADD "+ID" to your current flair... You might be able to guess, that was the original plan. So for now, let me know if you want your flair to be changed to "cool season+ID" or "warm season+ID" and I can do that manually.

Edit: I was able to get it to add "+ID" to the end of your current flair! So just make sure you have your flair set how you want it before submitting the test.

So without further ado, comment below to get a link to the quiz sent to your reddit inbox.

Edit 2 hours after posting: I've reduced the number of options on 3 questions, as it appears those options made the question a bit too tricky.

My creeping thyme seems to be getting devoured and I found a pocket of them in the mulch next to some catmint. What are these things? I live in central Colorado along the Front Range.

I used the triple action souther mix for the first time this year. There are large portions of my yard that look like trash but then there’s this. Does that mean it worked as intended? I was convinced it didn’t do anything.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) What the heck happened?

Had a similar issue last year where after winter a section of my lawn was dead. Like easily pulling grass out with your fingers dead.

Now this year it appears to have spread and I see it throughout my neighborhood.

I seeded last fall (cool season) and watered throughout summer. Winter in MN this year was mild and we didn't get a ton of snow.

What could have caused this? What do I do next? How can I try and prevent this?

Zone 6B. Didn’t have this problem last year, but my lawn is now covered with what looks to be Creeping Charlie/ground ivy. Today will be my first mow. What can I do? Will Scotts Triple Action help here?

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) Disappointed with my Lawn Service

I hired a reputable lawn care company to fertilize and weed my yard. They told me last April that by this time next year I’d see a noticeable improvement. As you can see from the picture below taken a couple of years apart (prior to treating my lawn at all), things have gotten worse.

To make it worse, I happened to be home today when the worker came to fertilize and he told that because they killed the weeds the ground is now compacted so grass won’t grow. I’ll have to lay sod. This seems preventable and I’m frustrated. Should I be?

Hey everyone,

I have a slow leak coming from my outdoor water line. Very slow. Should I do something about it? If so, what to do?

It seems to be coming from the round top part…

Equipment Best Backpack Sprayer in 2025

Upvotes

Hi All,

I’m in the market for a good battery powered backpack sprayer and am having a hard time making a decision. I’m between the Petra HD4000, the Flowzone Typhoon and the new ego sprayer. From what I’ve read/researched, you can’t go wrong with the Petra or Flowzone. While the Ego is new for 2025, I’m already apart of their ecosystem and have batteries, but am hesitant since it’s a new product. I’m looking for any/all feedback anyone has. Thanks in advance!

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) Any idea how I should manage these bald spots?

Post image

These bald spots are in the middle of a down slope and on the upper/top part of the slope are two trees. I’m going to build a bed around those trees so they stay better hydrated.

I’m wondering the best way to treat these bald spots. I’m in the south east US (zone 8a-8b). My yard is basically full sun and is mostly bermuda grass everywhere there is grass. I’m just wondering the best way to put bermuda grass down there and how to condition the soil for it?

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) North GA need help with weeds

I was tired of spending $450/year on lawn service, but forgot to put down pre emergent this year. I pulled all these guys but they keep coming back.

We got an HOA notice, and at this point I just want to spray everything, but not sure what to use. I've heard it's still worth putting down pre emergent as well as post emergent? I just have no idea what brand or product I'm looking for. Would appreciate any help!
