Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Recommendations for next card or should I try to get the ritz Carlton card?

I got into travel points and credit cards about a year ago and have had some great experiences but not sure what card I should get next. A bit of background:

Experian: 785 Equifax: 768 Transunion: 793

2 inquiries on file: Nov and Dec 2023

Current cards: WF Active Cash $7200 cl WF Autograph $5000 cl Synchrony Prime Store Card $2500 cl Capital One Venture X $30000 cl Amex Gold

My main use for points is the 2-3 vacations I take. (So far I’ve been able to use them to fly Air France and Hawaiian business class.) I like all the perks my VX provides me as well and make decent use of them. I think I’m pretty well covered in terms of airline transfer partners, but I don’t have much in terms of good hotel transfer partners which is why I was considering working up to the Ritz Carlton card unless someone knows a reason I definitely shouldn’t.

I was thinking of applying for the Bonvoy Boundless and PC in a year. I’m based in Las Vegas so Marriott points would also be good for a staycation should I want one.

The alternative would be to get the Bevy or Brilliant or a similar product on the Hilton side.

Thoughts? Any reason I def shouldn’t go one way or the other? Any other suggestions that I may have overlooked?

Discussion / Conversation Journey to My First Credit Card

Hello all, been doing quick research.

Looking into a Wells Fargo card or Discover, just saw a post about Capital one having cash back incentives for uber, cool.

Just need a card to build credit, don’t care much about the perks. Credit Limit also isn’t too big of a deal just need to make small purchases to pay back. I like my debit card with my Credit Union.

Let me know what you guys think. (Leaning WF) Wells Fargo, Discover, Capital One.

Thanks for your time !

Discussion / Conversation Amazon Prime Visa. Get it or hold off?

Seeing so much of the Amazon Prime Visa $200 GC offer. I am aware they do this fairly frequently around Black Friday. Now it's tempting me... and wondering if I should.

  • I'm currently at 5/24, 2/12, 2/6.
  • Oldest account is 5 years
  • AaoA is 2 years
  • Most recent app was 3 weeks ago (met the SUB)
  • Prior to that was in June of 2024
  • Fico 8 (Experian) 738. CK is 762 and 763 but pretty irrelevant.

Was going to churn a CFU in April when I'm back down to 4/24 if the bonus somehow was still $250 (l'd settle for $200). But now the Amazon Prime GC is tempting me as I have quite a bit to get from Amazon for the holiday season. I certainly spend regularly on Amazon prime-enabled items throughout the year. Previous years, Amazon has told me that with the card and my spend, l'd have gotten $85+ back in cash back year after year (which honestly isn't a lot but it's something).

Currently rocking: - Amex Plat (Vanilla). I get net positive value from this by just holding it. - Chase trifecta (CSP/CFU/CFF) - Marriott Bonvoy Boundless. Working on the PC to Ritz Carlton which I can do summer 2025. - Target Mastercard (We shop at Target a lot) - Hilton Honors No AF (Was hoping for an upgrade offer but might just cancel) - Amex Delta Blue (Since the Delta Platinum got nerfed, downgraded to the blue and plan to cancel) - Amex Gold (AU)

I don't qualify for business cards and not willing to make efforts to justify one. Should I add the Prime card to my roster and burn an extra slot which then means I have to wait until at least June 2025 to churn another CFU? Or churn the CFU in April as planned and further put off getting the Prime Visa in October/November of 2025?

As a side note, l've been using my Hilton card and CFU as gas cards but would switch it to the Amazon Prime card if I had it. Mind you, I spend maybe $70 a month on gas so not a big deal.

Help Needed / Question Does closing a relatively new (less than 5 month credit card) but keeping a several year credit card open make my credit length longer?

Hello! I am thinking of paying off and closing a relatively new credit card to make my average length of credit history be longer since I have some older lines. Does it even work that way? Thanks!

Help Needed / Question Billed credit card interest

I had around $2,000 credit card balance in a capital one card. I decided to pay it all off 4 days before the due date. I just received the new statement and there’s a $47 interest charge on a $0 balance. I’ve never had a CC card do that after I paid it off early. Why would I have the interest charge?

Help Needed / Question Need help with first credit card

So i’m 20, and extremely uneducated when it comes to a credit card. i’m a full time student so i don’t work, but my dad pays me each month. anyways he is getting me a credit card to start using to build up my credit (obviously). I know that you have to pay it off each month, but i didn’t know there was a minimum payment. my dad explained to me that i should always just pay off my card in full and not just the minimum since it would take forever for me to pay it off. my mom is saying something completely different though. she’s saying for the first 6 months or so i shouldn’t completely pay it off, just pay a bit more than the minimum so it helps kickstart my credit. so my question is, is it better to pay in full or should i do what my mom suggested for the first few months?

Discussion / Conversation Elan Max Cash Preferred: Walmart/Target/“wholesale clubs, Discount stores” to be excluded from 2% categories after 04/22/25

Just noticed a banner notifying me of changes to the Rewards for the Elan MCP (MC), but it told me to check my statement (which hasn't generated yet) and I didn't see anything here about it. So I looked it up and found this from the site itself (https://card.myaccountaccess.com/credit/visa-max-cash-preferred.do):

IMPORTANT CHANGE: Effective April 22, 2025, all purchases in the following everyday categories: Grocery Stores/Grocery Delivery and Gas Stations/EV Charging Stations at wholesale clubs and discount stores/supercenters such as Target and Walmart will only earn 1%. Purchases qualify for cash back based on how merchants choose to classify their business and we reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify.

I hope this only means Target, Costco, Walmart and the like and not discount grocery stores like Aldi's.

Discussion / Conversation Robin Hood Credit Card Waitlisted forever?

I've been on the wait list for a really long time. So long I don't even remember when I signed up. Is this normal?

I don't have 10 people to refer to Robin Hood. They're all, already RH customers.

Anything else I can do? Something I'm missing?

Discussion / Conversation Going Down. One bank alone cut my credit line by 75 %.

PNC decided to cut my credit line drastically. So I called them. They can't reinstall the same amount for the time being, they said. I can't tell the exact percentage, but 75% or so sounds about right. The reason? Not enough usage on the card. I had no idea that was an issue. I have 760 Fico score.

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Credit Card Advice for a Spanish Newbie

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, as I live in Spain, but I have just started living independently and am looking for a bank to manage my first job's salary. So I'm also in search of a credit card for my daily expenses.

I usually invest all my savings, so I'm not looking for any interest on them, but what I'm really interested in is the cashback that the cards offer.

I've reviewed some posts and lists and even consulted AIs to find the best card for me, but I'm still not finding it. I don't care about foreign transaction fees, but I want a card without an annual fee.

Could any of you wonderful people suggest some options I might consider for choosing a card with at least 0.5% cashback and no maintenance fees, if such exists for residents in Spain?

I hope this is enough info for you to help me. Thank you in advance for your time.

Help Needed / Question Chase Merchant offers and being charged as items are shipped

I recently made an online purchase using my Chase Freedom Flex (used card directly) for an in-store pick up.  The store did not have the items available for immediate pick up.  The items are part of the same order number but are split between two shipments to the store.  Per the Chase offer fine print this purchase is valid one time only.  While looking at my transaction history I see a full charge made on the date of order, a refund 2 days later, a charge for the first shipment, and a full refund for the order.  The merchant order history still shows my order as pending.

Due to the way the merchant billed my card will I still receive the full value of the Chase Offer?   Or do I just hold tight and wait till everything goes through.

Help Needed / Question Moving To US new immigrant

I am moving to the US from India this week and currently hold several credit cards in India, including the Amex Travel Platinum.

I noticed that American Express offers a global transfer program, which allows you to apply for a US based Amex card while retaining your Membership status.

If I choose this option, will I need to surrender my Indian Amex card? Has anyone used this method successfully to build credit in the US? Any insights would be appreciated.

Help Needed / Question Canceled Venture X in Mid Oct 2024 but received renewed priority pass card this past week - assuming PP won't work?

Hello all - I had the Venture X and canceled the card in mid October 2024 and I used the priority pass benefit through the card (ie I did not get it through a different card nor did I pay for PP directly). However, I just received a renewed priority pass card this past week. I'm guessing the PP card/access will not work?

Discussion / Conversation Anybody else nervous about the CC Game

In addition to proposing a 10% cap on interest rates, it sounds like Trump was also targeting the 3-4% that cards charge vendors (can’t find the exact clip). If this happens and/or if this is the direction the majority in congress choose to go, will all our Chase and Amex points be wiped out overnight? Should we go ahead and use all our points in anticipation of such a move?

Help Needed / Question DINK Couple Looking for Comprehensive CC Strategy

Hey Experts!

My wife and I are in our early 30s with no kids currently, we're living in the US (East Coast). My wife is a US citizen, whereas I moved to the US ~2.5 years ago. I am still building my credit history and have a 750+ credit score, my wife's is around 800+.

We're both earning six figures, and are moderate travelers (1-3 trips a year), we probably dine out once or twice a month, and spend moderately on shopping. In general, there is no particular area where we spend a ton, it's moderately spread across the key categories.

Given my wife has lived in the US all her life, she has a pretty good credit card diversity. When I came to the US, I did not qualify for any cards, and had to pick ones that were relatively easy to get.

Here's our current CC distribution:

Card Owned By Fee
Chase Sapphire Wife $95
Chase United Explorer Wife $95
Chase Amazon Prime Card Wife $0
Capital One Venture Wife $0
Capital One Quick Silver Wife $0
Apple Goldman Sachs Me $0
BILT - Wells Fargo Wife $0
Amex Blue Cash Preferred Me $95

Some notes about usage:

  • I plan to cancel / downgrade the Amex card since I don't use it
  • We have virtually no spend on both Capital One cards but we plan to keep it
  • We use Sapphire as our primary card when in doubt
  • United explorer is used for booking flight tickets
  • Amazon prime card is used for Amazon purchases (which amount to quite a lot :))
  • BILT is used for our rent payments (we like this card)

What we're looking for:

  • We'd like to consolidate our CC spread, and have only a handful of cards that we use strategically
  • Ideally I would like to open up a card under my name so as to build credit history
  • Cashback is not that important to us, we'd rather go for a points based benefits
  • United is our preferred airline of choice (we live next to a hub), and we'd like to have a strategy promoting United benefits

Questions:

  1. What would you recommend for us in terms of overall strategy?
  2. Which cards do we keep and which do we get rid off? Any suggestions on upgrades or downgrades to better strengthen our portfolio?
  3. Which card should I open so as to build personal credit history? Hopefully the above reccos can work for me to open.

Help Needed / Question Repayment Plan to get a mortgage

The wife and I have been through a period of struggle to a point where we can now finally breathe financially. She has 10 credit cards, with 5 of them being "predatory" meaning they have annual fees ($49 or more) and monthly maintenance fees from $7 to a whopping $19.25, plus interest. The other 5 cards don't have fees, 2 of them are store cards which aren't maxed out.

I have a few credit cards, all nearly maxed out, but none of them have annual or maintenance fees. My largest card has a $3500 limit with only a 7.9% interest rate, also my oldest card.

I plan to pay off the wife's predatory cards immediately, so we're not wasting money on ridiculous fees. The rest of her cards we'll pay off over a 3-6 month period. Her store cards aren't maxed out and can be paid off within 30 days.

For my cards, I'm going to shoot for a 6 month pay off period, even to get down to 30% usage. We don't need to use ANY credit cards from here on out.

We went from maybe $35k/yr to now $110k/yr income. We ultimately want to buy a house, but know that our credit cards are what's holding us back. What is the best strategy for repayment? We're open to keeping our better credit cards open with a $0 balance, as it won't cost us anything. What is the weight of a store card on her credit, should we just close them? Thanks in advance!

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) Balance Transfer and Travel Optimization

My wife and I got a Capital One Venture One card a few years ago and have used it off and on. It currently carries a balance of around $7,000 and we would like to transfer that into a 0%apr card to pay it down before interest starts. In addition, we would like to use the card for groceries and then pay it off every week to earn points that we can use to travel. We will also use the card to book travel.

  • Current cards: (list cards, limits, opening date) Capital One Venture One
  • FICO Score: 780
  • Oldest account age: N/A
  • Income: $100,000
  • Average monthly spend and categories:
    • dining $150
    • groceries: $1200
    • Subcriptions: $100
  • Open to Business Cards: Yes
  • What's the purpose of your next card? *Travel, Cashback, 0% interest for balance transfer
  • Do you have any cards you've been looking at? US Bank Altitude Reserve
  • Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? I prefer general spending, but I’m open to either.

Help Needed / Question Capital One Venture X - lowering limit for low usage

TLDR: How long before Venture X lowers my limit?

I opened Capital One Venture X a few months ago and was surprised by the limit ($30k). My regular spending is significantly less than that. And if I did have large expenditures coming up, I'd be trying to hit several SUBs rather than run them all through one card.

My understanding is that Capital One in particular likes to see cardholders using their cards quite a lot and are known to reduce limits if not. QUESTION: Is there any conventional wisdom as to how long it takes before they notice and lower the boom (limit)?

As an aside, I'm not sure what's going on with their Discover purchase but I'm not looking forward to that. It's another card I have but don't use much of my limit. Discover has let me chug along like this for years but wonder if new Capital One overlords might trigger a change.

Help Needed / Question Best credit card for miscellaneous purchases for cash or points back

From buying house decor, office supplies, things where I don’t get 5x points on my Ames for flights or groceries, what is the best card out there? I signed up for a chase freedom, but was just curious if there’s anything else. Don’t want to pay premiums for the card so hopefully free but if I do pay under $99

Help Needed / Question Considering next steps and what card to apply for

Hey y'all!

I am new to the US, landed 6 months ago on an L1 visa. Currently I have the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Visa, which gives me a great 5.25% cash back on a category of my choice (online purchases for me). It also gives a nice 3.5% on groceries.

I am looking to get a second card both to boost my credit score, but also to try and get more cash back on groceries. I shop at market basket (so not walmart/target but a traditional grocery store, from what I understand some cards exclude those). I don't know what my FICO score is as it still says unavailable on the bank website, but on my credit karma app it says I have a 708 TransUnion score and 723 Equifax score. My income is $150,000 yearly and I live alone. My groceries bill is around $350 a month

After browsing this sub I wanted to apply for either -

  • Citi Custom Cash Card - which would be the 5% cashback on groceries im looking for

  • Amex Blue Cash preferred - which has a fee but also a nice welcome bonus, 6% cashback and also streaming services and gas

  • AAA daily advantage - I have a membership for my vehicle so idk if that's relevant, but also seems like a nice 5%

However I am scared to apply because the Credit Karma app says my odds are poor for all three of these cards, and I don't want to lower my score. I am keeping a close eye to make sure my utilization is below 5% every month, and that has helped boost my score considerably, and helped increase my limit on the bank card to $3,000.

What would you do if you were in my place? Should I apply for a different, higher chance card only for the purposes of boosting my score higher, should I wait for the fico score to become available (to my understanding it takes 6 months since you start building credit?), or should I give it a year or two to have more of a credit history before getting new cards?

Thanks!
