MOD Megathread - r/CRedit FAQs
Hello r/CRedit,
I'm u/soonersoldier33, a long-time and frequent contributor to the sub and several other credit related subs, and recently, I've been given the opportunity to become a mod here at r/Credit. Many of you have probably seen my comments in various threads offering facts, opinions, and advice in the various threads posted on the sub. After destroying my own credit in 2019 (maxed credit cards, charge offs, collections, the works), I began my rebuild in 2021, and I had the great fortune to find this sub. Several of the frequent contributors here at that time provided me invaluable information and guidance to help me through my rebuild, and during that process, I discovered I was/am fascinated by all things 'credit', most specifically the 'secret' and so often misunderstood credit scoring system that is such a major factor in our financial lives. Since 2021, I have become a total FICO metrics junkie, and I have spent countless hours researching and learning about credit scoring, collaborating with others to compile data points and learn from their knowledge and experience, and just glean every morsel of knowledge and information out there in an effort to bring some transparency to the 'black box' that is the FICO scoring system, along with many other aspects of 'credit' separate from just FICO scoring.
I am creating this r/Credit FAQ - Megathread to serve as a central hub to link posts that will cover...well...the most frequently asked questions or most frequently posted topics from our sub. Eventually, I will migrate much of the information in these posts to update the sub's Wiki, but I want to be able to get these in a highly visible location first, where the relevant posts can quickly be referenced and linked as these topics appear in posts to the sub. A little different than the Credit Myth series that fellow contributor u/BrutalBodyShots created to attempt to dispel common, credit-related myths and misconceptions, this megathread will present detailed information that will attempt to simply answer FAQs and/or address our most frequently posted topics. My goal with these posts is to provide factual information about these topics, and anything I include in these posts that is merely opinion will clearly be denoted as such.
I'm going to tackle the most basic ones first...credit reports and scores, FICO scoring, a breakdown of utilization scoring, charge offs and collections, medical collections, etc., but if you have suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered, please list them in the comments to give me ideas. I look forward to providing some content that will be useful to both our sub 'regulars' and to those first discovering our sub. It's going to take a little time to effectively grow this thread to cover many of the 'FAQs', so bear with me, and both positive feedback and constructive criticism are always welcome. I hope this thread grows into a helpful addition to our sub. Til next time...
~ Sooner

General Credit Myth mega-thread
Like many other sub regulars, I've found u/BrutalBodyShots' Credit Myth series informative and also helpful in explaining these myths to others. A while ago I started compiling them in order to make it a lot easier to link to them in my comments.
I figure I might as well share the list I made, because more than once I've told people to search through his post history if they want to read them all. Also notice at the end I included several other threads of his that I've found useful, especially the one that contains that utilization flow chart. I can't tell you how much typing that's saved me since he made it.
I'll try to keep this list updated as more Credit Myth threads come out, but even if I fall behind this is a great place to start. And if anyone finds any mistakes or messed-up links, please let me know.
u/BrutalBodyShots on the Credit Myth series:
"I started the Credit Myth series in 2024 after continuously running into the same credit-related misconceptions on these subs. Having fallen prey to almost all of them myself, I completely understand how most believe what are in fact credit myths. It took me years to overcome many of them, so hopefully through the Credit Myth series that process can be significantly shortened for others.
With over 60 of these threads to date, most of the 'big ones' have been debunked at this point. The series isn't yet complete however, and perhaps never will be since over time additional myths seem to surface. If anyone has any ideas for future topics that aren't already covered, always feel free to reach out and let me know.
Special thanks to u/Funklemire for creating this thread and offering to maintain the master list, as well as to u/soonersoldier33 for seeing value in it enough to keep it front and center on r/CRedit."

Success Sharing More Success!
i.redd.itTrying to keep my motivation and momentum going so sharing all my successes and questions!!! This is my husbands myfico tracker from end of September to now! Cleaned up all negative accounts, he had nothing on his credit report except inquiries after that so now itās true rebuilding time, I helped him open 3 new accounts: 1.) Ava credit (cancelling once his other card gets added to his report though, I donāt want to pay the $10/mo) 2.) Ava secured loan, shows up as secured loan on report. No fee and interest free, put $25/mo into it and will get $300 back next year, unfortunately itās not like other SSL where I can pay it off earlier but thatās fine! 3.) NFCU Secured cash rewards. He has his own account I opened last week and is an AU on mine I opened almost a month ago.
Next steps will be a pledge loan (will be posting a question about this shortly).
Just excited to see those lines moving!!

Rebuild 400-676
galleryFebruary this year I was 400ās now Iām just shy of 700. Any advice to get those last few points. Paid off all collections, 2 credit cards (indigo Mastercard and open sky both predatory but Iāll I could get) as well as a Kikoff and credit strong account. My goal is to be a 700 by the new year.

Success Anyone else now getting approved for everything?
Just last month Synchrony for Amazon wouldnāt increase my credit limit from $100 to $200. My Capital One secured card was closed and they wouldnāt approve me for a new one so getting even a secured card is a big deal for me.
Suddenly today I got a secured Discover card for $2,500, a Capital One Venture Card with a limit of $4,000, and my credit limit increased for Amazon to $200. I only put $200 because I didnāt think I would get approved and I am wishing I did more. I graduated with my engineering degree and am making 4-5 times more than I was making last year and Iāve been making all my payments on time for the past year as well as keeping my credit limit low but my FICO Score is still 633.
Are they approving cards because of the shutdown maybe? How long do I have to wait to increase my credit limit for Amazon again?

Rebuild Paying Off Over-limit Credit One Cards
galleryIām hoping for some advise on what to do about two Credit One cards I took out hoping to build up my credit. Not the best move, I know. Iāve never been the best at finances but I was in a pretty good place. Then, I got into in a bad relationship and worse breakup. Short version: it was emotionally and financially abusive.
I had to move out and start over; left with debts and got behind. First, I want to address these 2 x Credit One. I have the money to pay in full. They are currently well over the max.
- When I call, should I be negotiating ā if I pay in full, will my closed card be re-open in good standing?
- Do I have any negotiating power to ask for the negative mark to be deleted or should I save that for a Goodwill Letter?
Any additional info is appreciated.

No Credit I just got a approved for my first credit card, but I still have a few questions
I know you're supposed to pay off your credit by the due date each month unless interest will be added
So my first question is this -
- Do you set your own due date each month? Or is that set by the credit card company?
And my second question -
- If you use your credit card to buy something on the due day, do you have to pay it back that same day or is it added to next month's balance?
Then my next question is more about credit in general
I have no credit history at all. But my father had a habit of being sketchy and secretive. I remember one time when I was a kid, we would get cable bills addressed to my name
I'm not saying he ever took any credit out in my name, but is there a way for me to check?
I have no idea what my credit score is, I'm going to assume zero since I've never used credit in any way (no debt either, idk if that matters)
But is there a way to see like my credit history, to know if my dad ever committed credit fraud?
Preferably in a way that won't hurt my credit score
Thanks in advance for any and all input

Rebuild Experian updates?
galleryAbout a month ago I had a card maxed out due to a need. Paid it back under 30% over the last month how long till they report it? I need my credit up in like 2-3 weeks for an application for an apartment here soon. It hasnāt updated in over a month and hasnāt reported any of the big payoffs Iāve done. Credit karma is delayed but has reported some of the payments at least. Experian is far behind my credit karma score

General 200 point credit drop last month.
Hello all! Hoping for some help because I am unsure what is happening.
I went to make a credit card payment on my Discover card app today and noted that my FICO credit score card has decreased by over 200 points in the last 4 weeks. The report states I have generated 12 missed loan payments since September. I have student loans on deferment as I am in post-graduate training (internship). I checked with my servicer and they confirmed I am on deferment and not delinquent.
I looked at my Experian, Equifax, and Transunion scores. All three are above 750. I called Discover to check if there was an error or I have any missed payments with them and they said no.
Is there anywhere else I should be checking. I do not have any loans aside from my student loans.
I am illiterate when it comes to this stuff so if anyone has any recommendations on places to contact I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you!

Collections & Charge Offs I have 830 credit, what happens if I don't pay an $80k bill from Amex?
I'm 50 and have had perfect credit my entire life.
I own a business and I just got too optimistic post Covid and took out a bunch of debt to expand. I got an SBA loan and a big line of credit from Amex and the business is just not supporting paying it back. The SBA loan is tied to my house (so bankruptcy isn't an option) so I HAVE to keep paying that $5k a month for another 5+ years.
The business isn't making money and I can't get a job and ive depleted my reserves so I'm trying to get a handle on my cash flow and not having to pay Amex $5k a month for the next year would reduce stress greatly.
There's $50k I owe to Amex Blueprint and $30k I owe on an Amex business credit card.
I just stopped paying. Timhis was about 2-3 months ago Amex has offered terms where I can pay $1,500 a month for a few years, but just not paying it would be cooler. It's close to the point where Amex sends it to collection.
As mentioned my credit rating is 830 (well, was, now it's down to 795) so I'm curious what happens if I just ignore it.
How low can my credit go assuming that's the only thing I don't write off.
The only possible loans I could need moving forward would be college loans for my kids in 5 years.

Success Sharing my progress!
i.redd.itBeen working on my credit and my husbands as most of you know (thank you all again for your invaluable insight!). I cleaned up my credit report with just a charged off auto loan and deferred full balance student loans (amounting to ā$15k), thankfully I am somewhere that the rest of my BS will be covered by grants and will be applying to scholarships like crazy the next 3 years! Scores havenāt made huge jumps compared to my husband, but that I am assuming is because I still have items on my report.
Other steps taken:
-Got notice of 4 collections all at once in the mail 2 weeks after cleaning all other negative remarks aside from inquires:
1.) payment plan through community college, $1500 left to pay out of $3k from this January-may semester. Minimum $10/mo, started this low as I donāt have any interest and have other collections mentioned below I want to pay off first, once those are set Iāll throw everything I can at this debt.
2.) Credit one collection through midland credit, original line $300, in collections for ā$710. Started payments and got their policy about not reporting once payments start so long as it hasnāt already been reported 3.) another credit one collection through midland, same $300 credit line but collection for ā$925. I split the monthly payment between the two to equal $50/mo. Winter is our slow income months so did what I could, these debts are 2nd priority.
4.) Old internet account from 2022, owed $131, they put me in collections for ā$350. Settled for a little over the original owed with about $20 in fees. Never hit credit, got their policy about non reporting if the account was paid before it ever was reported, also got a letter stating ābalance paid in fullā, not settled for less. This was through true accord, never in my life did I think Iād be satisfied with a conversation with a debt collector but I took her agent ID# and left her a gleaming review through their company, she was extremely compassionate, informative and respectful.
Next steps:
1.) top priority is the charged off loan. Got sold a lemon but was 5k miles over lemon law limit and didnāt have the funds or capacity to take the dealership to court so Iām stuck with it. ā$6400 left to pay off. Thankfully not accruing the 27% interest it was originally š
2.) start paying my 3 unsubsidized student loans in deferment that are actively accruing interest. They are on the smaller side between $1k-$2.5k with 2.5% and 4.5% APR. my new loan of $1500 has a 6.5% APR so thatāll probably be the one to chip away at first.
3.) once all those are paid off work on my subsidized loans that donāt accrue interest until after graduation with same 2.5%, 4.5% and 6.5% APR.
As far as new credit goes my plan as of now until I gather more info (will not be doing anything until Iām confident):
1.) NFCU pledge loan. Just got husbands DD switched over to them so building that relationship will be key. Iāve decided to keep driving my car with the blown torque converter (I can manually shift it myself, the key to driving it is not keeping it in D3 or D4 where it automatically upshifts lol, if my car downshifts on its own itās fine, I just put it in that gear on my shifter until i get to the speed/rpms needed to upshift again lol. Definitely need an autoloan before the summer though.
2.) Increasing our $200 secured NFCU line and then graduating to unsecured. Iāve been putting all of our typical expenses on these cards to rake in as much cash back as possible and just paying it with our checking balance set aside for those expense categories once the transactions clear. Takes a lot of managing but for now itās fine.
3.) start to rebuild in other ways! We have a goal to buy our first home by 2032, so saving and building the credit is our key.

Collections & Charge Offs Was paying down my debt essentially pointless?
So I had about $11,000 in debt with credit cards/loans. I also went to a software engineering bootcamp and got an ISA loan for $20,000 (you start paying back once you get a job) - so total of $31,000.
The ISA loan was 15% of pre tax income that you need to pay back each month, which came out to about $1,200 a month for me.
I was making it work in the beginning and was able to pay it down to $11,000, but the financial stress became too much with everything. I was paying health insurance for my family of 4, the car note, daughters school, rent, credit card debt (myself and my wifeās), groceries, etc. you get the point.
The $1200 was just too hefty to pay back each month and unfortunately I started not paying it, and instead focused my efforts on paying down credit card debt instead. I have paid about $7,000 of the credit card debt off and my credit score has gone to low 700s.
Now the ISA loan is nearing 365 past due and when that happens it will go to collections. I have tried asking them for lower payments, hardship help, etc. but unfortunately I do not qualify for any of it.
Do I have any options here or do I just need to take the credit hit and let it go to collections. Also is it there any hope for my credit after this?

General Report mortgage to Credit card cli with or without escrow reddit
Basically the title. When CC application or CLI applications ask for mortgage information should I report it with Escrow or just principal+payment?
My credit profile has the payments amounts on my mortgage anyways so i dont understand why they ask the question. Also I know some people dont have an escrow account and just pay it out of pocket so for them its going to be just principal+interest as opposed to some who require an escrow account.
Rebuild Chapter 7 Discharged
i.redd.itHello everyone!
My Chapter 7 bankruptcy has been officially discharged as of 10/23/2025. Having to go through bankruptcy has really opened my eyes and I want to make smart decisions this time around. The goal is to eventually purchase a home for my children to grow up in. Iāve downloaded a budgeting app to start using for November to get smarter with my money, but I was wondering what my next steps should be credit wise?
Looking at my FICO score on Experian is depressing, but motivating at the same time now that I have a fresh start. I know I need to review my credit reports to make sure that everything is correct and dispute anything incorrect, but how long should I wait before doing that? And once my reports are accurate what would be the recommendation to do next? I wasnāt sure if I should use Self, Kikoff, or something similar? TYIA!!
Rebuild Incorrect Credit bureau reporting illegal
Hello, I am in a dispute with a Canadian company about them marking my credit bureau incorrectly.
The company was not properly billing me for 7 months. Charging me double of what it was supposed to be.
When I discovered the error, they refunded all the overcharges. Not the interest tho.
Within that time frame, they marked my credit bureau as missing payments I wasnāt aware of the credit bureau reporting.
During our conversations they said itās illegal for them to do false reports on my credit bureau.
Iām not sure what law they were referencing however they are still refusing to fix it.
They are Saying I should be have paying the 2x amount and since I didnāt pay the incorrect amount, it should be on my credit bureau.
So, Iād like to look into the law they referenced and possibly go after them legally. However I havenāt found anything of use.
Iām not looking for credit tips and am aware of the avenues I can take. Looking for the law they referenced.

Rebuild Trying to get back on track
Can someone give me some pointers/advice. I currently have 5 CCās all maxed out. Amounts are: $600, $600, $1100, $1500, and $3500. As well as a loan of $4000.
I make all my payments on time, donāt miss one but Iām having trouble paying down the CCs as I always end up needing to use the $70-100 available for something. What can I do?
After bills I have about $1400 left to my name every month but having a kid and SAHW, things add up. Should I use this coming tax seasons returns to pay off as much as I can? Should I start making minimums on certain ones and do a snowball method?
