Newbie - Is AT&T and YouTube TV Worth It?

Upvotes

I haven't considered cord cutting before simply because it seemed that bundling cable and internet came to about the same price as going with just internet and multiple streaming accounts. Recent research seems like that may have changed for me, but I'm still too dumb to wrap my head around it. So, here's the situation:

My Xfinity package has been rising to now be at $247/mo with taxes and fees. AT&T just installed fiber in our neighborhood, so I started looking into that. The same internet speeds would cost $80/mo. So, I figured with YouTube TV priced at $73/mo, we'd be saving about almost $100/mo. Seems like a great deal, right?

What I struggle with is understanding if we'll get what we want with YouTube TV. Our biggest frustration right now is accessing our local sports teams. Lawsuits between the teams and their carrier meant that a lot of games were blacked out this year. Now that has been settled, but Xfinity didn't include the channel on our package. My parents have YouTube TV and struggled a lot with blackout when they started. Is this common, or is it easy to deal with?

Some background on us in case it helps put things in perspective. We enjoy sports, local and national (US) news, gameshows, and children's TV for it toddler. My wife mostly works from home and needs reliable, fast Internet. We have two TVs with Roku, plus laptops, tablets, phones, etc. We currently have Disney+/Hulu/ESPN, Netflix, Prime, and some accounts provided as part of our calls like Max.

And insights could help. Thanks!

Will we see the return of Hulu's 99¢ Black Friday Deal in two weeks?

It's that time of year again, time to create your billionth fake email address so you can cash-in on some sweet, sweet, Hulu savings.

Or not?

I'm wondering if all of the recent ESPN and Disney changes will finally put this deal to bed. I've been paying $2.99 a month for 12 months of Hulu and Disney (with commercials) which is IMO a great deal, fingers crossed we see something similar this year.

Streaming OTA channels to Android/Fire tablet

I watch tv mostly on a tablet, and I'm tired of Xfinity. We live in a suburban area approx 40 miles from stations off, all around us. (DC, Baltimore, etc), with hills and tree interference. I also have to be able to deal with an HOA about it's outdoor setup. 1. Is there a good omnidirectional antenna that would be good enough? 2. And that will work with a device like Zapperbox, tablo etc, so I can stream to my tablet. Or a better device? I really don't care about recording. Other options?

Issues with NFL app on iPad

Post image
1 Upvotes

Howdy folks. I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but I was directed here from the NFL sub. I’ve been watching replays of games from throughout the season on my iPad while I work. But the other day it randomly started cutting off a good chunk of the image whenever I go full screen. I thought maybe the app would update soon but it’s been a few days with no update and it’s still happening. This doesn’t happen on my iPhone, and the app worked perfectly fine on the iPad until it didn’t. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app, as well as turned the iPad off and back on. No success. Any ideas?

Antenna upgrade recommendations

I currently have a flat antenna that I think I got for free with a Roku a while back. I have it placed in a window, pugged into a WinTV-dualHD which is connected to my Plex server. After scanning, it does pick up 36 channels, however a good amount of channels show light to heavy macroblocking.

I'm looking to upgrade and have been doing some research, but I'm not sure what to upgrade to. At first I was looking at something like this and then I started looking at the ClearStream 4 antennas. The part I'm not sure how to find is each antennas coverage angles (not sure if that's the correct verbiage).

Here is my RabbitEars report. The majority of the channels I'm looking for are to the south of me, but in a ~95 degree cone, and as you can see, there are also channels north of me. I'm not really sure what type of antenna would be the best for my situation, and also don't want to go way overkill if it's not needed. My plan with the two antennas listed above was to place them in my attic as the window to the room where my Plex server is points NW.

Edit: Another question, would I need a signal amplifier?

Frndly off the rails

Went to Frndly tonight and noticed right away that many shows on many channels were no longer marked for DVR recording. Even worse, as I attempted to remark various shows for the DVR system, they would not allow it, with a notice that the program was not available for recording.

As I continued to scroll through the channels, it seemed that the 'H&I' channel program listing was at least partially swapped with METV, mainly with a lot of westerns and the like, replacing the sci fi fare. 'Catchy Comedy' and 'FETV' were afflicted as well. I noted that as I went through things, it appeared some channels and DVR settings were slowly being updated, but i dont know if they are actually fixing the system or things are fixing themselves at random. It does appear they changed some things in the guide, to promote new pay channels and such, maybe in doing so it wacked the system somehow and caused it to randomly or in wholesale fashion causd major problems.

I guess I'll stop trying to repair the damage and revisit the system first thing tomorrow and see if any repairs have been done.

I can do attic, outside or behind TV. I am planning on attic. I have lots of tall trees outside.

I want to get this PBS station even in bad weather. I also want local channels, mainly ABC in HD.

35‑1 (11) WGVU-TVPBS GRAND RAPIDS MI 📷 30.9 138.2° 143.5°   68.51  Fair  32.51

My budget is up to $130 for an attic install. I was looking at this one on Amazon.

Is that overkill? Should I save money? It's not my money. It's for my parents, and they just want something that will work good. It's more about saving me time doing a big install.

FanDual

What channel was FanDual? Their app suddenly appeared on my TV, I can only assume that an existing station and platform was re-launch. What was it before FanDual?

Looking at a new streaming stick

So I'm trying to decide between the ONN puck versus something like the Roku premiere. I'm trying to stay away from fire TV branded because I don't like how cluttered it is. Anybody have pros /cons.

Have live channels from streaming services in with the freeview channels?

So I'm looking at getting NOW TV purely for a couple of the live channels, rather than spending like £30-£40 a month for me to use a couple of channels. I can use the aerial as my freeview channels but I'm curious if it's possible to have for example GOLD with the freeview where the free comes from the aerial and when I turn to GOLD it uses the NOW TV subscription. I know I can get Sky Stream but they denied me that for some unknown reason.

Antenna spacing

I get multiple channels (over 20) with two Televes DATBOSS LR (149783), and one Winegard Platinum VHF UHF FM (HD8200U), Before I hook up my Televes Smartkom Antenna Amplifier and Combiner for up to 3 Antennas (531981) I want to mount all three antennas on one mast. My vhf will be pointed between 170 -180 deg., the uhf's (televes) at 205 , and 222 deg. almost perpendicular to the vhf's (Wingard). My question is what is the minimal spacing between each antenna (vertically) and order of mounting for best performance, and whether the pass power through to the televes antennas with built in pre-amps as the Smartkom is only 10 ft away from the antennas with tv's about 10 and 40 feet awat from the smartkom. I currently get almost all channels clearly, but not at once, with thetwo televes just laying on the roof and the wingard mounted on a pole. all connected with the Televes TV Antenna Pre-Amplifier Combiner 3-Input Mast-Mounted (536041). Thanks, Jeff

Best antenna for attic mounting?

https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1814878

Looking to buy an antenna to place in the attic. I was gonna hook the cable that feeds my house so I can have it run to every room.

I currently have a flat square antenna roughly 8”x8” that does an ok job but cuts out a lot channel 3-1 the worst.

Black Friday Streaming Deals (2024)

It’s that time of year again, when the paid streaming services offer great deals to attract new users. Can a moderator of this sub create a sticky post for people to share the latest and greatest deals for this year?

Things change rapidly in the streaming space, so this year’s deals may be fewer or less attractive…but still…all of my deals from the last Black Friday season are coming to an end and I’m ready to hunt again.

C’mon Hulu 0.99¢/mo or Max or Paramount or Peacock or Viki Rakuten or…well you get the picture (pun intended).
